DESCRIPTION:Answering the question “Are we alone?” requires atmospheric spectroscopy of nearby terrestrial planets\, scientists conclude in the report ‘Life 2.0: A Scalable Distributed Space-Telescope Array for Biosignature Spectroscopy‘. \nFor an Earth–Sun analog\, even the strongest transmission signals are expected to be of order 1 part per million (ppm). Unlike short-period planets\, Earth 2.0 planets transit only about once per year\, so single-transit sensitivity\, rather than stacking repeated observations\, is the fundamental design driver. Life 2.0 is a scalable space-mission concept linking Earth 2.0 candidates discovered by PLATO and the Earth 2.0 (ET) mission with atmospheric characterization and biosignature assessment. The baseline architecture comprises 900 one-meter space telescopes\, each equipped with a high-throughput Waveguide Integrated Miniature Spectrograph and an ultra-low-read-noise CMOS detector. After independent calibration\, spectra acquired simultaneously during a transit are combined\, providing the photon-collecting capability of an approximately 30-m aperture at the selected spectral resolution while retaining a modular architecture. The baseline 0.2–1.05 μm range covers O3\, O2\, H2O\, Rayleigh scattering\, and other diagnostics\, with extension into the infrared as detector technologies mature. Prototype Waveguide Spectral Lens devices have demonstrated 40–66% throughput at resolving powers from R∼200 to R∼20\,000. Lightweight silicon-carbide mirrors and sub-electron-noise CMOS detectors support replicated production. Life 2.0 must address detector systematics\, instrument stability\, and stellar variability; rather than assuming these limitations disappear\, it builds on calibration\, detector-characterization\, and data-analysis techniques advanced during the JWST era. DESCRIPTION:In heel Nederland klinkt op elke eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 het luchtalarm van het waarschuwingsstelsel of waarschuwings- en alarmeringssysteem (WAS)\, behalve op feestdagen\, Nationale Dodenherdenking of bij andere speciale gebeurtenissen. \nDe test duurt 1 minuut en 26 seconden. In juni en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons. Het WAS is een netwerk van 4278 sirenes in Nederland die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De sirenes worden gebruikt om te waarschuwen via een luchtalarm voor (dreigend) gevaar\, met name indien er gevaarlijke stoffen in de lucht aanwezig (kunnen) zijn. Het systeem is ontwikkeld door Siemens\, en gebruikt elektronische sirenes op basis van de Federal Signal Modulator 2008 en 1004. Het waarschuwingsstelsel is eigendom van het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid\, en is op 3 juni 1998 in gebruik genomen. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan\, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven\, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden. \nExtinction Rebellion maakt er met de actie Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! telkens met kleurrijke vlaggen en banners een mooi maar bloedserieus moment van. Neem borden mee\, we delen tijdens de actie ook patches uit waarmee we onze boodschap kunnen uitdragen. \n‘Het Ballenalarm‘ is een ludieke actie waarmee de Stichting Zaadbalkanker vraagt om extra aandacht voor zaadbalkanker\, ook wel teelbalkanker genoemd. Het idee is dat mannen op de eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 – als de maandelijkse alarmsirenes loeien – hun teelballen checken\, en dit elke maand opnieuw. Vanaf woensdag koelt het geleidelijk af. Op maandag 03 augustus 2026 liggen de maximumtemperaturen tussen 28°C op de Wadden en plaatselijk 36°C in het zuidoosten. Komende nacht wordt zwoel met 17-20°C in landelijke gebieden. In stedelijke gebieden wordt het waarschijnlijk niet koeler dan 20-23°C. Dinsdag ligt de maximumtemperatuur tussen 28°C op de Wadden en 33°C in het zuiden. Doordat de lucht vochtiger wordt voelt het nog benauwder aan. Vooral in de oostelijke helft kunnen later enkele onweersbuien voor verkoeling zorgen. In de avond koelt het in het westen af naar 23-24°C door wind van zee. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. Janine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. Van 26 juli tot en met 30 augustus is VPRO Zomergasten elke zondagavond live te zien op NPO 2 en NPO Start. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJournalist Nasrah Habiballah (Zierikzee\, 1987) is op zondag 2 augustus de tweede gast in VPRO Zomergasten. Janine Abbring interviewt haar aan de hand van de door haar geselecteerde tv-\, online- en filmfragmenten. Habiballah: ‘Ik ben opgegroeid met twee culturen\, de Nederlandse en de Palestijnse\, en dus met twee werelden. Al vroeg leerde ik me aan te passen aan de wereld waarin ik mij op dat moment begaf\, maar ook om daar met de blik van een buitenstaander naar te kijken. Dat hoop ik de kijkers op mijn Zomergastenavond ook een beetje mee te kunnen geven.’ Nasrah Habiballah was tot deze zomer correspondent voor de NOS in Israël en de Palestijnse Gebieden. Ook deed ze verslag voor Nieuwsuur en de Vlaamse Radio en Televisie (VRT). Toen ze in 2023 aan haar correspondentschap begon\, was dat voor Habiballah een droom die uitkwam. Ze zou genuanceerde achtergrondverhalen gaan maken\, over het land van haar vader\, het land dat ze zelf als student en in de vakanties van haar jeugd had leren kennen. Maar het liep anders. Het werden lange werkdagen vol oorlogsverslaggeving en eerstelijns nieuws. Na de aanval van Hamas op Israël op 7 oktober 2023 en de daaropvolgende verwoesting van Gaza door Israël praatte ze vrijwel dagelijks miljoenen Nederlanders bij over de escalerende situatie in het land. Er volgden meer oorlogen: met Iran\, en met Libanon. Na ruim drie jaar stopte ze als correspondent. In een bericht aan haar collega’s omschreef ze die keuze als volgt: ‘Het is alsof je een hele lange wandeling hebt gemaakt. Zodra je op een bankje gaat zitten\, en je schoenen gaan uit\, dan voel je pas hoeveel pijn je voeten doen. Dat heeft me aan het denken gezet.’ Habiballah werd geboren in Zierikzee. Haar vader is een Israëlische Palestijn afkomstig uit een dorpje bij Nazareth. In de jaren tachtig kwam hij voor de liefde naar Nederland. Haar moeder ontmoette hij in Zierikzee\, waar hij destijds een shoarmazaak runde. Habiballah groeide op met drie zussen en twee broers. Als kind leerde ze Israël vooral tijdens de zomervakanties kennen. Het weerzien van de vele neefjes en nichtjes herinnert ze zich als één groot feest. Dan mocht ze langer opblijven en werd ze verwend door haar ooms en tantes. Ook als student keerde ze terug om het land en de cultuur beter te leren kennen. Na haar studie Journalistiek aan de Fontys Hogeschool in Tilburg studeerde Habiballah Arabisch aan de universiteit van Bir Zeit\, op de Westelijke Jordaanoever\, en Conflict Studies aan de universiteit van Haifa in Israël. Vanaf 2014\, terug in Nederland\, werkte ze als redacteur voor de NOS op verschillende redacties voor radio\, televisie en online. In 2020 werd ze aangesteld als NOS-correspondent in de regio Rotterdam-Den Haag. Begin 2023 werd ze correspondent voor de NOS in Israël en de Palestijnse Gebieden. Tijdens haar correspondentschap werd ze moeder van een dochter. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nVan de vroegere populatie argusvlinders is nog maar twee procent over. Om de soort in Friesland te beschermen heeft een groep vlinderliefhebbers ‘Red de argusvlinder” opgericht. Hoe ervaart een vogel de wereld? Dat is de centrale vraag in het boek ‘Door de ogen van een vogel’ van kunstenaar\, schrijver en vogelkenner Achilles Cools. Ze raken gewond of worden gedood tijdens bijvoorbeeld brandbestrijding\, een auto ongeluk\, verdrinkingsdood\, ongevallen tijdens patrouille. Dat zijn niet de enige risico’s van het mooie beroep Ranger. Sommige slachtoffers zijn onthoofd door stropers of aangevallen door militanten. Steevast blijven de families van de gevallenen met niks achter. The Thin Green Line Foundation is vaak dan hun enige hoop. Deze organisatie biedt financiële hulp aan de families van Rangers die tijdens hun werk werden gedood of gewond raakte. Het uiteindelijke doel is om alle families van de gesneuvelden financieel te kunnen ondersteunen. Want uiteindelijk zijn Rangers de poortwachters van onze natuur en cultuur schatten. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Warm\, droog\, lage luchtvochtigheid en winderig: het zijn omstandigheden die gunstig zijn voor natuurbranden\, oftewel ‘vuurweer’\, sinds begin jaren 1980 is het aantal dagen met zulk weer flink toegenomen in Zuid-Europa\, schrijven wetenschappers in het artikel ‘Major intensification of fire weather across southern Europe in recent decades‘ in het vakblad Scientific Reports. \nHet onderzoek beslaat de periode van 1981 tot en met 2025. Opvallend genoeg nam het aantal branden in die periode juist af. Net als het oppervlak verbrande natuur in Zuid-Europa\, al schommelde dat flink van jaar tot jaar. Het onderzoek gaat dus niet over de huidige branden in Frankrijk en Spanje. Menselijk gedrag veroorzaakt de meeste ontstekingen; als mensen minder peuken achteloos weggooien of minder brandstichten\, leidt dat tot minder branden. Maar er zijn nog meer zaken die invloed hebben. Denk aan het landschap en hoeveel brandstof dat bevat. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm δ-Cassiopeiïden bereikt op donderdag 30 juli 2026\, rond 04:00\, zijn maximum. \nWanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 10 meteoren per uur vallen. De radiant van de zwerm staat rond 06:00 in het hoogste punt aan de hemel\, op 79° boven de horizon. Het beste moment om δ-Cassiopeiïden waar te nemen is op 30 juli rond 04:15. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 72° boven de noordoostelijke horizon. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 1–5 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. De Maan is voor ongeveer 100% verlicht en is een flinke stoorzender; dit jaar zijn hierdoor alleen de helderste meteoren zichtbaar. Rond 05:15 gaat het schemeren en om 05:58 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 5 dagen rondom het maximum meer dan de helft van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur van de δ-Cassiopeiïden te zien. Tot 6 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Probeer dus ook enkele nachten voor en na het maximum meteoren waar te nemen. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 20% kleiner. DESCRIPTION:Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) 2026 lands on July 30\, the date when humanity will have used up nature’s entire annual budget of ecological resources and services\, according to Global Footprint Network\, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint\, and York University\, which now produces the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts under the governance of FoDaFo. \nCurrently\, humanity is using nature 73% faster than Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate\, meaning this overshoot is equivalent to using 1.73 Earths. It is the highest level of global overshoot in human history. This level of overuse is possible because one can deplete natural capital. Such depletion compromises long-term resource security. The consequences are visible in deforestation\, soil erosion\, biodiversity loss\, and the accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere\, contributing to more frequent extreme weather events and declining food production. EOD is the calculated calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term “overshoot” represents the level by which human population’s demand overshoots the sustainable amount of biological resources regenerated on Earth. When viewed through an economic perspective\, the annual EOD represents the day by which the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent\, and humanity enters environmental deficit spending. SUMMARY:2026 Morocco–Spain border incident / Ceuta migrant crossing crisis
DESCRIPTION:In late July 2026\, an estimated 60\,000 people\, predominantly young men\, breached and crossed the border from Morocco into the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta in North Africa\, with smaller numbers attempting to cross to another Spanish autonomous city\, Melilla\, about 400 kilometres away along the Mediterranean coastline. \nThis overwhelmed local reception facilities and prompted the government of Ceuta to request that the Spanish government declare a national emergency. Most entered by swimming around the Tarajal and Benzú breakwaters or by crossing on foot along the shoreline. By 31 July\, Spanish officials said about 50\,000 people had voluntarily returned to Morocco. By 4 August\, at least 99 of the migrants were reported to have died as a result of the incident. The European Union will hold emergency talks on Tuesday\, August 3\, to discuss the migration crisis in Ceuta after tense exchanges between Spain and other member states. Twenty-two member states issued a joint letter calling for co-ordinated action and the strengthening of the EU’s external borders\, after some 60\,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave from Morocco. Ceuta and Melilla are two autonomous cities of Spain located on the north coast of Africa. The Morocco–Spain border these cities form part of is the European Union’s only external land border in Africa. Under a special condition of the Schengen Agreement\, border checks are done on exit from the cities – no one can travel from Ceuta or Melilla to mainland Spain without being identified by the National Police at the port or the airport. Morocco claims sovereignty over both cities\, while Spain regards them as an integral part of its national territory since the 1400s. \nLinks:\nWhy Did 60\,000 Migrants Cross from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta?

DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a crime that exploits children\, men and women for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. \nTrafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year\, thousands of men\, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers\, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking\, whether as a country of origin\, transit or destination for victims. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Victims are trafficked for forced criminality and compelled to participate in online scam operations.
