DESCRIPTION:Het werkgebied van de Rangers strekt zich uit over meer dan 100.000 reservaten\, parken en beschermde natuurgebieden\, verspreid over de wereld. \nEen groot percentage van de Rangers loopt dagelijks gevaar\, dusdanig gevaar dat gemiddeld om de 3 dagen een Ranger wordt gedood. Sinds 2007 worden op de Wereld Rangers Dag de Rangers herdacht die tijdens hun werk werden gedood of gewond raakte. De slachtoffers worden niet allemaal onder de voet gelopen door olifanten. Ze raken gewond of worden gedood tijdens bijvoorbeeld brandbestrijding\, een auto ongeluk\, verdrinkingsdood\, ongevallen tijdens patrouille. Dat zijn niet de enige risico’s van het mooie beroep Ranger. Sommige slachtoffers zijn onthoofd door stropers of aangevallen door militanten. Steevast blijven de families van de gevallenen met niks achter. The Thin Green Line Foundation is vaak dan hun enige hoop. Deze organisatie biedt financiële hulp aan de families van Rangers die tijdens hun werk werden gedood of gewond raakte. Het uiteindelijke doel is om alle families van de gesneuvelden financieel te kunnen ondersteunen. Want uiteindelijk zijn Rangers de poortwachters van onze natuur en cultuur schatten. The Thin Green Line Foundation biedt spoedeisende financiële hulp\, verzorgt opleidingen en steunt in derde Wereld landen en conflictgebieden Rangers en hun gezinnen financieel. The Green Line Foundation is ook bedoeld om Rangers een betere uitrusting te geven zodat ze meer kans maken om zichzelf te beschermen tegen alle gevaren waar zij mee te maken krijgen. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Warm\, droog\, lage luchtvochtigheid en winderig: het zijn omstandigheden die gunstig zijn voor natuurbranden\, oftewel ‘vuurweer’\, sinds begin jaren 1980 is het aantal dagen met zulk weer flink toegenomen in Zuid-Europa\, schrijven wetenschappers in het artikel ‘Major intensification of fire weather across southern Europe in recent decades‘ in het vakblad Scientific Reports. \nHet onderzoek beslaat de periode van 1981 tot en met 2025. Opvallend genoeg nam het aantal branden in die periode juist af. Net als het oppervlak verbrande natuur in Zuid-Europa\, al schommelde dat flink van jaar tot jaar. Het onderzoek gaat dus niet over de huidige branden in Frankrijk en Spanje. Menselijk gedrag veroorzaakt de meeste ontstekingen; als mensen minder peuken achteloos weggooien of minder brandstichten\, leidt dat tot minder branden. Maar er zijn nog meer zaken die invloed hebben. Denk aan het landschap en hoeveel brandstof dat bevat. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples\, countries\, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. \nThe resolution places emphasis on involving young people\, as future leaders\, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. To mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments\, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events\, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations\, solidarity\, mutual understanding and reconciliation. The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values\, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. In a time when the noise of division grows louder — fueled by wars\, conflicts\, inequality\, and fear — friendship feels almost radical in its simplicity. It doesn’t arrive with fanfare or policy; it doesn’t need speeches or signatures. It begins with something quieter: a conversation\, a shared moment\, a willingness to see one another not as strangers but as fellow travelers through the human experience. In this year’s observance of the International Day of Friendship\, we’re reminded that real peace is forged not only in negotiation halls or by writing into treaties — it’s built\, thread by thread\, in the trust we extend to one another in daily life. Friendship\, especially among young people\, holds a special kind of power. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm δ-Cassiopeiïden bereikt op donderdag 30 juli 2026\, rond 04:00\, zijn maximum. \nWanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 10 meteoren per uur vallen. De radiant van de zwerm staat rond 06:00 in het hoogste punt aan de hemel\, op 79° boven de horizon. Het beste moment om δ-Cassiopeiïden waar te nemen is op 30 juli rond 04:15. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 72° boven de noordoostelijke horizon. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 1–5 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. De Maan is voor ongeveer 100% verlicht en is een flinke stoorzender; dit jaar zijn hierdoor alleen de helderste meteoren zichtbaar. Rond 05:15 gaat het schemeren en om 05:58 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 5 dagen rondom het maximum meer dan de helft van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur van de δ-Cassiopeiïden te zien. Tot 6 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Probeer dus ook enkele nachten voor en na het maximum meteoren waar te nemen. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 20% kleiner. The consequences are visible in deforestation\, soil erosion\, biodiversity loss\, and the accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere\, contributing to more frequent extreme weather events and declining food production. EOD is the calculated calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term “overshoot” represents the level by which human population’s demand overshoots the sustainable amount of biological resources regenerated on Earth. When viewed through an economic perspective\, the annual EOD represents the day by which the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent\, and humanity enters environmental deficit spending. By 31 July\, Spanish officials said about 50\,000 people had voluntarily returned to Morocco. By 4 August\, at least 99 of the migrants were reported to have died as a result of the incident. The European Union will hold emergency talks on Tuesday\, August 3\, to discuss the migration crisis in Ceuta after tense exchanges between Spain and other member states. Twenty-two member states issued a joint letter calling for co-ordinated action and the strengthening of the EU’s external borders\, after some 60\,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave from Morocco. Ceuta and Melilla are two autonomous cities of Spain located on the north coast of Africa. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Op 30 juli\, twee dagen na de zware aardbeving\, is het dodental opgelopen tot 34\, meldt de Japanse publieke omroep NHK. De reddingswerkzaamheden zijn nog in volle gang. Hoeveel mensen nog vermist zijn\, is onduidelijk. Zeker 123 mensen zijn gewond geraakt. Het Japanse leger werd direct na de bevingen ingezet om noodhulp te leveren en te helpen met zoeken naar overlevenden. Veel gebouwen zijn verwoest. Huizen en kantoorpanden hebben grote schade en delen van bruggen en fabrieken zijn ingestort. Meer dan 10.000 mensen kunnen nog niet terug naar huis. DESCRIPTION:Het Verdrag betreffende de status van vluchtelingen of Vluchtelingenverdrag (Convention relating to the Status of Refugees) werd op 28 juli 1951 opgesteld tijdens een door de Verenigde Naties georganiseerde conventie na voorbereidende beraadslagingen in 1950 te New York en in 1951 te Genève. \nIn 2026 op 28 juli precies 75 jaar geleden spraken landen via dit VN-Vluchtelingenverdrag af dat mensen die vluchten voor oorlog en vervolging bescherming verdienen. Het verdrag definieert wie in aanmerking komt voor de status van vluchteling\, het bepaalt dat landen die zijn aangesloten bij het verdrag asiel zullen verlenen aan personen die daar een aanvraag voor indienen en bepaalt dat aan een al dan niet als vluchteling erkende asielzoeker bepaalde rechten worden toegekend. Het verdrag bepaalt de rechten van vluchtelingen uit conflictsituaties voor 1951\, terwijl een in 1967 opgesteld protocol bij de conventie ook de rechten van vluchtelingen van na die datum regelt. Basisbeginsel van het verdrag is de regel\, dat iemand die is gevlucht niet teruggestuurd mag worden naar het herkomstland als er gegronde vrees voor vervolging bestaat\, het zogenaamde non-refoulement principe. Dit beginsel heeft zich in de loop van de decennia nadat het verdrag in werking is getreden\, ontwikkeld tot internationaal gewoonterecht\, wat betekent dat het overal ter wereld voor alle landen is gaan gelden\, ook landen die niet zijn aangesloten bij het verdrag en ongeacht de status als vluchteling of niet. Dit verdrag kwam in de plaats van de gebrekkige regelingen die er voorheen onder de Volkenbond\, de voorloper van de VN\, tot stand waren gekomen en stond sterk in het teken van de gebeurtenissen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hoofd- en halskanker is relatief zeldzaam. In Nederland krijgen jaarlijks ongeveer 3.000 mensen de diagnose dat ze kanker in het hoofd-halsgebied hebben. Staat gelijk aan ongeveer 5% van het totale aantal mensen die jaarlijks de diagnose kanker krijgen. \nIn België zie je een soort gelijke cijfers\, ook daar gaat het om 5% van alle nieuwe gevallen van kanker. Bij elke ziekte geeft het tijdig herkennen van de klachten grotere overlevingskansen\, dat is bij hoofd-halskanker niet anders.
