DESCRIPTION:World Ocean Day (WOD) is an international day that takes place annually on June 8\, the concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. \n“World Oceans Day” was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states.World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean\, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean\, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations\, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global\, this year’s annual program will celebrate the wonders of the ocean as a source of life that supports humanity and all other organisms on Earth. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source\, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen\, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity\, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention\, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Even though all its benefits\, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted\, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed\, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. “Reimagine”\, the theme of World Oceans Day 2026\, invites us to change the way we see and care for the ocean. For too long\, we have viewed it as something distant\, when in fact it is part of our daily lives: the air we breathe\, the food we eat\, and the climate balance that makes our existence possible. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nVanuit het stadscentrum van ’s-Hertogenbosch vaart de filmploeg een indrukwekkend moeras in: De Overlaat. Historisch gezien was het gebied van groot belang als waterberging en als militair verdedigingswerk voor de stad\, die niet voor niets bekend staat als de Moerasdraak. Maar ook de natuur profiteert! Met de Sint Jan op de achtergrond monitort Menno Bentveld grote modderkruipers die door het plantenrijke water zwemmen. Lepelaars en roerdompen vliegen over een oude spoorbrug. Aan de randen van het moeras\, richting de hogere zandgronden\, groeit blauwgrasland. Daar fladderen tal van dagvlinders en groeit een wel heel bijzondere orchidee. De Overlaat bestaat uit een aantal deelgebieden. Het Bossche Broek Noord en de Moerputten zijn van Staatsbosbeheer. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain – from production to harvest\, processing\, storage\, distribution\, all the way to preparation and consumption. With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually\, unsafe food is a threat to human health and economies\, disproportionally affecting vulnerable and marginalized people\, especially women and children\, populations affected by conflict\, and migrants. An estimated three million people around the world — in developed and developing countries — die every year from food and waterborne disease. Food is the starting point for our energy\, our health and our well-being. We often take for granted that it is safe\, but in an increasingly complex and interconnected world where food value chains are growing longer\, standards and regulations are that much more important in keeping us safe. Food safety is key to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals and World Food Safety Day brings it into the spotlight\, to help prevent\, detect and manage foodborne risks. Safe food contributes to economic prosperity\, boosting agriculture\, market access\, tourism and sustainable development. \n\nGoal 2 — There is no food security without food safety. Ending hunger is about all people having access to safe\, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.\nGoal 3 — Food safety has a direct impact on people’s health and nutritional intake. WSD was initially inspired by other World Days like the World Sparrow Day\, then by the World Chimpanzee Day. The date of June 7 was chozen as the best “compromise date” between both hemispheres and all the different Swift species of the world. DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste vrijdag van juni is het DonutDag (Donut Day / Doughnut Day)\, een buurtfeest waar gratis donuts door het Leger des Heils worden weggegeven. \nDe donut werd bekend toen lang geleden\, aan het front van de Eerste Wereldoorlog\, jonge heilssoldates van het Leger des Heils verse donuts uitdeelden aan infanteriesoldaten (Engels: doughboy). De vrouwen die de donuts uitdeelden\, werden al snel ‘donutmeisjes’ (Engels: doughnut dollies’) genoemd. De donut werd een symbool van alles wat het Leger des Heils deed om de ontberingen te verlichten van de aan de frontlinie vechtende mensen. Sindsdien deelt het Leger overal ter wereld donuts uit. DESCRIPTION:Wereldmilieudag (Engels: World Environment Day) wordt sinds 1974 jaarlijks door de Verenigde Naties georganiseerd\, de inzet is om overheden en bevolking stil te laten staan bij ons milieu. \nDeze speciale dag moet het bewustzijn hierover verbeteren. Er is voor 5 juni gekozen omdat op die dag in 1972 de internationale milieuconferentie begon die ook bekendstaat als het United Nations Environment Programme. Elk jaar organiseert een bepaalde gaststad in steeds weer een ander land de vergadering. Deze dag heeft verwantschap met de Dag van de Aarde. Op Wereldmilieudag worden meerdere acties gehouden en projecten uitgevoerd. In de Braziliaanse stad Goiânia staat een zeven meter hoog ampulvormig sculptuur als monument voor wereldvrede. Deze is gevuld met bodemmonsters/aarde – ofwel grond – uit vele landen\, dat symboliseert om tot een eenheid van de mensheid te komen. DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn 2015\, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Following extensive consultations\, a proposal was submitted to the attention of the thirty-second session of FAO Committee on Fisheries. The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date reflects the day when the Port State Measures Agreement officially entered into force as an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event\, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the FAO Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) recent report\, “Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources – 2025\,” over a third of fish stocks are being overexploited. IUU fishing catches millions of tonnes of fish every year. To curtail this\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urged the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. Meeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. \nLinks:\nDay for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Dat klinkt misschien als een ver-van-mijn-bedshow\, maar het raakt aan een vraag die jou wél aangaat: als AI straks steeds meer werk overneemt\, wie wordt daar dan beter van? Een opvallend cijfer om mee te beginnen: bij Anthropic\, het bedrijf achter AI-assistent Claude\, wordt sinds mei meer dan tachtig procent van alle nieuwe programmacode niet door mensen geschreven\, maar door Claude zelf. Een doorsnee ontwikkelaar levert er acht keer zoveel werk als in 2024. De mens bepaalt nog wat er moet gebeuren en controleert het resultaat\, maar het typwerk is grotendeels uitbesteed aan de AI. Anthropic publiceerde die cijfers in de  publicatie ‘When AI builds itself’\, en concludeert: AI helpt inmiddels bij het bouwen van AI. Doorgetrokken naar de toekomst wijst dat richting iets wat onderzoekers recursieve zelfverbetering noemen\, oftewel AI die zelfstandig zijn eigen\, betere opvolger ontwerpt. In gewone taal: een AI die een nog slimmere AI maakt\, die op zijn beurt weer een slimmere maakt\, in een steeds hoger tempo. Zover zijn we nog niet\, en onvermijdelijk is het ook niet\, schrijft het bedrijf. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Every day\, children living in wars across the globe are facing unspeakable horrors: they are not safe sleeping in their homes or playing outside\, learning in school or seeking medical care at hospitals. From killing and maiming\, abduction and sexual violence\, to attacks on education and health facilities\, and the denial of the humanitarian assistance that they desperately need\, children are being caught in the crosshairs of warring parties at a staggering scale. \nThe United Nations Secretary-General’s Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict reveals that violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels in 2024\, with a 25 per cent increase in grave violations compared with the previous year. The United Nations verified 41\,370 grave violations against children\, affecting 22\,495 children worldwide. The highest numbers of grave violations were verified in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (8\,554)\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4\,043)\, Somalia (2\,568)\, Nigeria (2\,436) and Haiti (2\,269). Killing and maiming remained the most prevalent grave violation\, affecting 11\,967 children. Most casualties resulted from explosive ordnance\, including explosive remnants of war\, mines and improvised explosive devices\, as well as crossfire and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.Thousands of children were recruited and used by armed forces and armed groups\, often in combat or support roles. The sharp rise in cases involving recruitment\, abduction and other overlapping violations highlights the growing risks faced by children in conflict settings. The United Nations verified a significant rise in conflict-related sexual violence against children\, including a dramatic increase in gang rape. Girls were disproportionately affected\, while boys were also subjected to sexual violence. The violation remains severely underreported because of stigma\, fear of reprisals\, lack of services and concerns for survivors’ safety.Denial of humanitarian access reached alarming levels in 2024. Parties to conflict attacked aid convoys and humanitarian personnel\, imposed movement restrictions\, interfered with relief operations and created administrative barriers\, leaving children without access to healthcare\, education\, protection and other essential services. The United Nations verified nearly 2\,000 attacks on schools and hospitals in 2024\, making these essential civilian facilities increasingly unsafe for children. Attacks on schools and hospitals\, as well as their military use\, continued to disrupt children’s access to education and healthcare. The destruction of civilian infrastructure and attacks on protected facilities further increased children’s vulnerability in conflict-affected areas. Ending and preventing grave violations against children remains central to the United Nations mandate on children and armed conflict. DESCRIPTION:Clubfoot\, or talipes equinovarus\, is a treatable birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward that affects approximately 150\,000-200\,000 children each year. \nThe affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other. Approximately 50% of cases of clubfoot affect both feet. Most of the time\, it is not associated with other problems. Without treatment\, the foot remains deformed\, and people walk on the sides of their feet. This may lead to pain and difficulty walking. The exact cause is usually not identified. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. If one identical twin is affected\, there is a 33% chance the other one will be as well. The underlying mechanism involves disruption of the muscles or connective tissue of the lower leg\, leading to joint contracture. Other abnormalities are associated 20% of the time\, with the most common being distal arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele. The diagnosis may be made at birth by examination or before birth during an ultrasound exam. \nInitial treatment is most often with the Ponseti method. This involves moving the foot into an improved position followed by casting\, which is repeated at weekly intervals. Once the inward bending is improved\, the Achilles tendon is often cut\, and braces are worn until the age of four. Initially\, the brace is worn nearly continuously and then just at night. In about 20% of cases\, further surgery is required. Treatment can be carried out by a range of healthcare providers and can generally be achieved in the developing world with few resources. Clubfoot occurs in 1 to 4 of every 1\,000 live births\, making it one of the most common birth defects affecting the legs.
