DESCRIPTION:Every day\, children living in wars across the globe are facing unspeakable horrors: they are not safe sleeping in their homes or playing outside\, learning in school or seeking medical care at hospitals. From killing and maiming\, abduction and sexual violence\, to attacks on education and health facilities\, and the denial of the humanitarian assistance that they desperately need\, children are being caught in the crosshairs of warring parties at a staggering scale. \nThe United Nations Secretary-General’s Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict reveals that violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels in 2024\, with a 25 per cent increase in grave violations compared with the previous year. The United Nations verified 41\,370 grave violations against children\, affecting 22\,495 children worldwide. The highest numbers of grave violations were verified in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (8\,554)\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4\,043)\, Somalia (2\,568)\, Nigeria (2\,436) and Haiti (2\,269). Killing and maiming remained the most prevalent grave violation\, affecting 11\,967 children. Most casualties resulted from explosive ordnance\, including explosive remnants of war\, mines and improvised explosive devices\, as well as crossfire and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.Thousands of children were recruited and used by armed forces and armed groups\, often in combat or support roles. The sharp rise in cases involving recruitment\, abduction and other overlapping violations highlights the growing risks faced by children in conflict settings. The United Nations verified a significant rise in conflict-related sexual violence against children\, including a dramatic increase in gang rape. Girls were disproportionately affected\, while boys were also subjected to sexual violence. The violation remains severely underreported because of stigma\, fear of reprisals\, lack of services and concerns for survivors’ safety.Denial of humanitarian access reached alarming levels in 2024. Parties to conflict attacked aid convoys and humanitarian personnel\, imposed movement restrictions\, interfered with relief operations and created administrative barriers\, leaving children without access to healthcare\, education\, protection and other essential services. The United Nations verified nearly 2\,000 attacks on schools and hospitals in 2024\, making these essential civilian facilities increasingly unsafe for children. Attacks on schools and hospitals\, as well as their military use\, continued to disrupt children’s access to education and healthcare. The destruction of civilian infrastructure and attacks on protected facilities further increased children’s vulnerability in conflict-affected areas. Ending and preventing grave violations against children remains central to the United Nations mandate on children and armed conflict. DESCRIPTION:Clubfoot\, or talipes equinovarus\, is a treatable birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward that affects approximately 150\,000-200\,000 children each year. \nThe affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other. Approximately 50% of cases of clubfoot affect both feet. Most of the time\, it is not associated with other problems. Without treatment\, the foot remains deformed\, and people walk on the sides of their feet. This may lead to pain and difficulty walking. The exact cause is usually not identified. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. If one identical twin is affected\, there is a 33% chance the other one will be as well. The underlying mechanism involves disruption of the muscles or connective tissue of the lower leg\, leading to joint contracture. Other abnormalities are associated 20% of the time\, with the most common being distal arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele. The diagnosis may be made at birth by examination or before birth during an ultrasound exam. \nInitial treatment is most often with the Ponseti method. This involves moving the foot into an improved position followed by casting\, which is repeated at weekly intervals. Once the inward bending is improved\, the Achilles tendon is often cut\, and braces are worn until the age of four. Initially\, the brace is worn nearly continuously and then just at night. In about 20% of cases\, further surgery is required. Treatment can be carried out by a range of healthcare providers and can generally be achieved in the developing world with few resources. Clubfoot occurs in 1 to 4 of every 1\,000 live births\, making it one of the most common birth defects affecting the legs. DESCRIPTION:Clean energy technologies such as solar panels\, wind turbines\, batteries\, energy grids and electric vehicles (EVs) are important for the shift to fossilfree renewable energy. \nSuch technologies rely on so-called ‘transition minerals’\, like lithium and nickel\, the extraction of which is accelerating rapidly worldwide. Many transition minerals are being mined in the Global South\, often in the territories of Indigenous and rural peoples. In Argentina\, Indonesia\, Brazil and South Africa\, among other countries\, cases of transition mineral mining and processing resemble the worst injustices of the fossil fuel era\, with evidence of human rights abuses\, and social and environmental harms. The report ‘Renewing Injustice?‘ examines the role of 23 Dutch companies and 7 Dutch financiers in transition mineral supply chains by mapping their links to mining in the Global South\, specifically the four cases above. By connecting supply chains and financial flows with their human rights\, social and environmental impacts in  transition mining communities\, we aim to increase transparency and show how companies and financiers avoid accountability. This research reveals that Dutch companies and financiers are actively involved in global mineral supply chains. They can be linked to human rights\, social and environmental abuses in their value chains\, and are failing to abide by international standards of business and human rights. The need to transition to renewable energy and low carbon economies is as important as the need to create a more inclusive and equitable world\, now and for the future. The authors call on policymakers\, companies\, and financiers to change course to prevent repeating the injustices of the past. DESCRIPTION:International Whores’ Day / International Sex Workers’ Day\, observed annually on June 2\, honours sex workers and recognises the often exploitative nature of their working conditions. \nThe date commemorates the occupation of Église Saint-Nizier in Lyon by more than a hundred sex workers on June 2\, 1975 to draw attention to their inhumane working conditions. It has been celebrated annually since 1976. In German\, it is known as Hurentag (Whore’s Day) and in Spanish-speaking countries\, it is entitled the Día Internacional de la Trabajadora Sexual (the International Day of the Sex Worker). In the 1970s\, French police put sex workers under increasing pressure. The police repression forced them to work increasingly in secret. As a result\, they had less protection and there was more violence against sex workers. After two murders and the unwillingness of the government to improve the situation\, sex workers in Lyon occupied the Saint-Nizier Church and went on strike. In juni en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons. Het WAS is een netwerk van 4278 sirenes in Nederland die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De sirenes worden gebruikt om te waarschuwen via een luchtalarm voor (dreigend) gevaar\, met name indien er gevaarlijke stoffen in de lucht aanwezig (kunnen) zijn. Het systeem is ontwikkeld door Siemens\, en gebruikt elektronische sirenes op basis van de Federal Signal Modulator 2008 en 1004. Het waarschuwingsstelsel is eigendom van het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid\, en is op 3 juni 1998 in gebruik genomen. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan\, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven\, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden. \nExtinction Rebellion maakt er met de actie Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! telkens met kleurrijke vlaggen en banners een mooi maar bloedserieus moment van. De speciale rapporteur van de VN-Mensenrechtenraad en Amnesty International waarschuwen dat Palantir medeplichtig is aan Israëls genocide. In Nederland wordt Palantir gebruikt door onder meer de politie. Naar eigen zeggen uitsluitend voor het opsporen van zware criminaliteit en terrorismebestrijding\, maar de overheid is hier niet transparant over: pas vorig jaar werd bekend dat de samenwerking al sinds 2011 bestaat. Door de samenwerking met de politie heeft het bedrijf toegang tot de data van miljoenen Nederlanders. Ter herdenking van die rellen vinden sinds 1970 in tal van Amerikaanse steden Gay Pride Parades plaats\, die in vele Westerse landen navolging vonden\, zij het niet altijd meer eind juni. Sinds 1999 hebben de democratische presidenten Clinton\, Obama en Biden juni officieel tot Pride Month uitgeroepen. De republikeinse president Trump deed dat alleen in 2019 via Twitter. Gedurende deze maand wordt door tal van Amerikaanse organisaties\, instellingen en bedrijven aandacht besteed aan lhbt-thema’s\, onder meer door publieks- en marketingcampagnes. Hierbij kan echter ook sprake zijn van pinkwashing. In Nederland vindt ter herdenking van de Stonewall-rellen jaarlijks in telkens een andere stad de Roze Zaterdag plaats\, vaak voorafgegaan door een Roze Week. Eind juni waren eveneens het Midzomergracht festival in Utrecht en The Hague Pride in Den Haag. DESCRIPTION:On 1 June 2026\, the European Commission adopted the Roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments. \nThis comprehensive approach encompasses a wide range of legislative domains\, including industrial chemicals\, pharmaceuticals\, and food additives\, and outlines over 30 key recommendations to facilitate the transition to alternative testing methods. The European Union has a long-standing policy of replacing\, reducing and refining animal testing (3Rs). Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union recognises the need to protect animals as sentient beings. Directive 2010/63/EU1 sets the goal of phasing out animal use for research and for regulatory purposes in the EU\, as soon as scientifically possible. Many pieces of chemical legislation contain a requirement to use animal testing only as a last resort. The European Commission is preparing a “Roadmap Towards Phasing Out Animal Testing for Chemical Safety Assessments”. This will serve as a guiding plan for accelerating the path towards replacing\, reducing and refining animal testing for the safety assessments of chemicals. The roadmap was announced in Communication C(2023)5041\, which was published as a response to the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Save cruelty-free cosmetics – Commit to a Europe without animal testing”. In the communication\, the Commission expressed its commitment to develop a roadmap that “will outline milestones and specific actions\, to be implemented in the short to longer term\, to reduce animal testing and that would be pre-requisites for a transition towards an animal-free regulatory system”. This response announces further elements that will accompany the roadmap and help reach its goals. Phasing out animal testing will require substantial time. For instance\, there are currently no available approaches that are sufficient for developing and validating methods. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nDe harlekijn staat in bloei\, een orchidee die bijna nergens meer voorkomt. Hier in de Braakman\, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen\, doet hij het goed. Een zeegeul is hier al voor de Deltawerken afgesloten\, om zoet water en grond te creëren. In dit stukje ruige natuur\, omklemd door Zeeuwse landbouw\, leven reeën naast allerlei vogels als koereigers. De poelen zitten ook vol leven met salamanders en waterkevers. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects\, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide\, including 1.2 million as the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. DESCRIPTION:Stripdagen Haarlem is een stripfestival dat sinds 1992 om het jaar georganiseerd wordt in Haarlem. \nHet vrij toegankelijke festival bestaat met name uit tentoonstellingen\, beurzen\, lezingen en kinderactiviteiten. De Stripdagen Haarlem worden ieder even jaar georganiseerd door Stichting Beeldverhaal Nederland. Hoewel er op verschillende plekken in Haarlem activiteiten zijn\, concentreert het festival zich sinds 2024 in de koepelgevangenis. Voorheen vond een deel van de beurzen plaats in De Philharmonie en langs de Grote Kerk richting de Grote Markt. Het stripfestival wordt elke editie door ongeveer 30.000 tot 35.000 mensen bezocht. DESCRIPTION:On 30 May\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) spotlights the potato\, Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a crop regularly consumed by billions of people\, potatoes are a key crop across diverse farming systems globally\, ranging from smallholders producing diverse heirloom varieties by hand in the Andes\, to vast commercial\, mechanized farms in different continents. \nPotatoes contribute to the food security and nutrition as well as and livelihoods and employment of people in rural and urban areas the world over. The Day is an opportunity to build on the International Year of the Potato\, which was observed in 2008. The observance will also be used to underscore the importance of the crop to combating hunger and poverty and addressing environmental threats to agrifood systems. The roles of small-scale family farmers\, a significant proportion of whom are women\, in safeguarding the wide spectrum of the crop’s diversity\, will also be recognized\, while the cultural and culinary dimensions of the crop’s cultivation and consumption will be celebrated. The third observance of the International Day of Potato will be on 29 May 2026 (as 30 May falls on a Saturday)\, with the theme Where potatoes grow\, livelihoods flourish. The theme positions the role of potatoes in strengthening livelihoods for farmers and value chain actors —from the highlands of the Andes to Africa\, Europe\, Asia and beyond. By advancing potato farming and value chain development\, the crop contributes to poverty reduction\, resilience and more inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.
