Samen met bouwbedrijven heeft Vogelbescherming daarom jarenlang gewerkt aan een plan om neststenen voor vogels en andere beschermde diersoorten te verplichten bij nieuwbouw en grootschalige renovatie. Het plan is simpel qua uitvoering\, geeft vogels weer een toekomst en levert geen vertraging op bij het bouwen van nieuwe woningen. Ondanks de steun van de bouwsector en de Tweede Kamer wil minister Mona Keijzer het plan niet uitvoeren. Ze schrapte de oplossing een maand voordat deze uitgevoerd zou worden. DESCRIPTION:The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations\, its job is to advance scientific knowledge about climate change caused by human activities. \nThe World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set up the IPCC in 1988. The United Nations endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva\, Switzerland\, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle. A cycle is usually six to seven years. The bureau selects experts in their fields to prepare IPCC reports. There is a formal nomination process by governments and observer organizations to find these experts. The IPCC has three working groups and a task force\, which carry out its scientific work. The IPCC informs governments about the state of knowledge of climate change. It does this by examining all the relevant scientific literature on the subject. This includes the natural\, economic and social impacts and risks. It also covers possible response options. The IPCC does not conduct its own original research. It aims to be objective and comprehensive. Thousands of scientists and other experts volunteer to review the publications. They compile key findings into “Assessment Reports” for policymakers and the general public; Experts have described this work as the biggest peer review process in the scientific community. Leading climate scientists and all member governments endorse the IPCC’s findings. This underscores that the IPCC is a well-respected authority on climate change. \nGovernments\, civil society organizations\, and the media regularly quote from the panel’s reports. IPCC reports play a key role in the annual climate negotiations held by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The IPCC Fifth Assessment Report was an important influence on the landmark Paris Agreement in 2015. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore for contributions to the understanding of climate change. The seventh assessment cycle of the IPCC began in 2023. In August 2021\, the IPCC published its Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report on the physical science basis of climate change. The Guardian described this report as the “starkest warning yet” of “major inevitable and irreversible climate changes”. Many newspapers around the world echoed this theme. In February 2022\, the IPCC released its Working Group II report on impacts and adaptation. It published Working Group III’s “mitigation of climate change” contribution to the Sixth Assessment in April 2022. The Sixth Assessment Report concluded with a Synthesis Report in March 2023. During the period of the Sixth Assessment Report\, the IPCC released three special reports. The first and most influential was the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C in 2018. In 2019 the Special Report on Climate Change and Land\, and the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate came out. The IPCC also updated its methodologies in 2019. So the sixth assessment cycle was the most ambitious in the IPCC’s history. \nIn 2025\, the IPCC will be meeting in Hangzhou\, China\, from 24 to 28 February to agree on the outlines of the three Working Group contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) and the Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies\, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage. During the IPCC’s 62nd Plenary Session hosted by the People’s Republic of China\, the Panel will consider the draft outlines of the three Working Group contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report and the draft outline of the Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies\, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage\, and the respective timelines and budgets for these reports. In addition\, government delegates of the 195-member country Panel will be updated on the broad draft outline of the AR7 Synthesis Report. DESCRIPTION:De Duitse Bondsdagverkiezingen van 2025 vinden plaats op zondag 23 februari 2025\, het worden de eenentwintigste federale verkiezingen waarbij een nieuwe Bondsdag wordt gekozen. \nDeze verkiezingen stonden oorspronkelijk gepland op 28 september 2025\, maar werden met zeven maanden vervroegd nadat het kabinet-Scholz eind 2024 ten val was gekomen. Bij de vorige Bondsdagverkiezingen in september 2021 kwam de sociaaldemocratische SPD als grootste partij uit de bus. Deze partij vormde samen met Bündnis 90/Die Grünen en de liberale FDP een zogeheten verkeerslichtcoalitie onder leiding van bondskanselier Olaf Scholz. Het was in Duitsland de eerste keer dat een driepartijencoalitie op nationaal niveau tot stand kwam. Op 6 november 2024 ontstond een regeringscrisis toen minister van Financiën Christian Lindner (FDP) door bondskanselier Scholz werd ontslagen. Dit gebeurde na herhaaldelijke conflicten tussen de FDP en de andere coalitiepartners op het gebied van financiën en economie. Met uitzondering van minister van Verkeer Volker Wissing traden daarop ook de andere FDP-ministers af\, waardoor het kabinet viel. Tijdens deze regeringscrisis werd onthuld dat de FDP voorafgaand aan de breuk al een strategisch stappenplan had opgesteld om een einde aan het kabinet te maken. Op 16 december 2024 werd het vertrouwen in de regering door een grote meerderheid in de Bondsdag formeel opgezegd. Op 27 december 2024 werd het parlement door bondspresident Frank-Walter Steinmeier ontbonden en werden vervroegde verkiezingen aangekondigd. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nStrandopruimers zetten zich elke week in om alle troep bij de Kwade Hoek op te ruimen. Op Terschelling opent de ‘Walk of Grief‘\, waar je verlies kunt verwerken in de natuur. Zondag gaan de Duitsers naar de stembus\, wat voor invloed hebben deze verkiezingen op het klimaat? DESCRIPTION:Steentje voor Steentje houdt een ecotage (porte-manteau van ecologie en sabotage)-ceremonie om de Colombiaanse slachtoffers van de destructieve kolenwinning te gedenken. \nBij elk steentje dat van onder het kolenspoor vandaan wordt gepakt\, wordt naam van een slachtoffer genoemd. Dit kolenspoor ligt bij de HES Bulk terminal aan de Westhavenweg en verbindt dit met het algemene spoornet. Over dit stukje spoor rijden alleen kolentreinen\, dus ander treinverkeer wordt niet gehinderd. Steentje voor Steentje hoorde van mensen uit Colombia hoe inheemse gemeenschappen zoals de Yukpa\, de Wayuu net als de inwoners van Tabaco al heel lang lijden onder mijnbouw door Amerikaanse (Drummond) en Zwitserse (Glencore/Prodeco) multinationale bedrijven.\nDe mijnbouw zaait dood en verderf en trekt een spoor van vernieling:\n– kinderen worden ziek en gaan dood door de vervuiling van lucht en water\, veroorzaakt door de mijnbouw.\n– er wordt honger geleden omdat mensen van hun land worden verjaagd en (voedsel)bossen & vruchtbare landbouwgronden worden verzwolgen door de mijnbouw.\n– mensen die opkomen voor hun rechten\, worden bedreigd en geïntimideerd. Er zijn mensen vermoord en verdwenen\, ze hebben niet eens een naamloos graf. Ondanks erkenning van dit alles blijven Europese energiebedrijven deze “bloedkolen” kopen. \nDaarom besloten ze om met de schotter-steentjes naast het kolenspoor in de Amsterdamse haven een grafmonument te maken voor het kolentijdperk en voor de slachtoffers van de nietsontziende door winstbejag gedreven mijnbouw. We noemen namen van mensen\, planten en dieren en herdenken hun levens terwijl het spoor waarover deze bloedkolen worden vervoerd steentje voor steentje slinkt. Zo willen ze stil staan bij & handelen vanuit het feit dat voor onze comfortabele manier van leven zonder honger en gebrek\, de mensen en de natuur in Colombia gruwelijk geweld wordt aangedaan. DESCRIPTION:The Encephalitis Society\, sinds 2014 de initiator van de World Encephalitis Day\, hoopt met de World Encephalitis Day de 87% van de mensen te bereiken die niet weten wat encefalitis of  hersenontsteking is en wat de gevolgen er van zijn. \nWeten wat encefalitis is de sleutel voor een vroege diagnose en toegang hebben tot de beste behandeling en ondersteuning. Maar wat is encefalitis? Encefalitis betekent hersenontsteking. Bij hersenontsteking is de hersenmassa zelf ontstoken en worden zenuwcellen of de witte stof van de hersenen direct beschadigd. Niet te verwarren met meningitis\, dat is een ontsteking van de hersenvliezen. Encefalitis wordt veroorzaakt door virussen. De meest voorkomende oorzaak is het koortslipvirus. Nu moet je niet bij elke koortslip denken dat je encefalitis krijgt want het is een zeldzame ziekte met niet meer dan enkele tientallen gevallen per jaar in Nederland. This milestone emphasizes the importance of language preservation in safeguarding cultural heritage\, improving education\, and fostering more peaceful societies. \nCurrently\, 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language\, a figure that exceeds 90% in certain regions. Research underscores the benefits of using learners’ native languages in education\, fostering better learning outcomes\, self-esteem\, and critical thinking skills. DESCRIPTION:In its resolution 77/248 on “Oceans and the law of the sea”\, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to convene the resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. \nIn its resolution 72/249 of 24 December 2017\, the General Assembly decided to convene an Intergovernmental Conference\, under the auspices of the United Nations\, to consider the recommendations of the Preparatory Committee established by resolution 69/292 of 19 June 2015 on the elements and to elaborate the text of an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction\, with a view to developing the instrument as soon as possible. In accordance with resolution 72/249\, the Conference held a three-day organizational meeting in New York\, from 16 to 18 April 2018\, to discuss organizational matters\, including the process for the preparation of the zero draft of the instrument. The first session was convened from 4 to 17 September 2018\, the second session from 25 March to 5 April 2019 and the third session from 19 to 30 August 2019. The fourth session\, which was postponed by decisions 74/543 and 75/570 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic\, was convened from 7 to 18 March 2022. A fifth session of the Conference was convened from 15 to 26 August 2022 pursuant to General Assembly decision 76/564 (available as A/76/L.46). \nOn the last day of that session\, the Conference\, in considering the way forward\, decided to suspend the fifth session and resume it at a later date to be determined. Pursuant to resolution 77/248 of the General Assembly\, the resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Conference met from 20 February to 3 March 2023.  At the end of that meeting\, the Conference decided to resume at a later date with a view to adopting the agreement. In this connection\, the General Assembly\, in its decision 77/556 of 18 April 2023 (currently available as document A/77/L.62)\, requested the Secretary-General to convene a further resumed fifth session of the conference on 19 and 20 June 2023\, tentatively\, or on a date to be determined in consultation with the President of the conference. Accordingly\, the further resumed fifth session was held at UN Headquarters in New York on 19 and 20 June 2023. On 19 June 2023\, the Conference adopted\, by consensus\, the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (A/CONF.232/2023/4). The Conference was closed on 20 June 2023. \nThe Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction or BBNJ Agreement\, commonly known as the High Seas Treaty\, is a legally binding instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction. There is some controversy over the popularized name of the agreement. It is an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The text was finalised during an intergovernmental conference at the UN on 4 March 2023 and adopted on 19 June 2023. Both states and regional economic integration organizations can become parties to the Agreement. In 2017\, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted to convene an intergovernmental conference (IGC) to consider establishing an international legally binding instrument (ILBI) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). This was considered necessary because UNCLOS did not provide a framework for areas beyond national jurisdiction. There was a particular concern for marine biodiversity and the impact of overfishing on global fish stocks and ecosystem stability. The treaty addresses four themes: \n(1) marine genetic resources (MGRs) and their digital sequence information\, including the fair and equitable sharing of benefits;\n(2) area-based management tools (ABMTs)\, including marine protected areas (MPAs);\n(3) environmental impact assessments (EIAs);\n(4) capacity building and transfer of marine technology (CB&TMT). \nThe area-based management tools and environmental impact assessments relate mainly to conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity\, while the marine genetic resources and capacity building and transfer of marine technology include issues of economic justice and equity. Greenpeace called it “the biggest conservation victory ever”. The main achievement is the new possibility to create marine protected areas in international waters. By doing so the agreement now makes it possible to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030 (part of the 30 by 30 target). Though the agreement does not directly address climate change\, it also serves as a step towards protecting the ecosystems that store carbon in sediments. The High Seas Treaty has 76 articles and two annexes. One of its main aims is “s stewards of the ocean in areas beyond national jurisdiction on behalf of present and future generations by protecting\, caring for and ensuring responsible use of the marine environment\, maintaining the integrity of ocean ecosystems and conserving the inherent value of biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction”. \nThe Agreement recognizes traditional knowledge. It has articles regarding the “polluter-pays” principle\, and different impacts of human activities including areas beyond the national jurisdiction of the countries making those activities. The agreement was adopted by the 193 United Nations Member States. Before entering into force\, the treaty needed to be ratified by at least 60 UN member states. The former treaty\, UNCLOS\, was adopted in 1982 and entered into force in 1994. Is altijd oneerlijk. Daarom zijn lichtpuntjes zo belangrijk. Lichtpuntjes zijn een krachtig teken van hoop\, warmte\, steun en troost in moeilijke momenten\, voor iedereen die geraakt wordt door kanker. Vanaf 19 februari 2025 roepen VRT 1\, Radio2 en Kom op tegen Kanker heel Vlaanderen op om een lampion te kopen en vertellen voor wie het schijnt. Zo draag je een lichtpuntje op aan een dierbare\, iemand die wordt gemist of steun kan gebruiken. Zijn of haar naam wordt met de hand geschreven op jouw lampion en toegevoegd aan het Grootste Lichtpunt tegen Kanker\, dat wordt ontstoken op vrijdagavond 7 maart tijdens een pakkende liveshow in De Schorre in Boom. Kanker heeft een grote impact op het leven van mensen. En op dat van hun naasten. Met onder andere de opbrengst van Lichtpuntje tegen Kanker kunnen we kanker blijven vermijden\, bestrijden en verzachten. Elke dag krijgen 124 mensen in Vlaanderen te horen dat ze kanker hebben. Hoewel behandelingen steeds beter worden\, overleeft meer dan 1 op 3 de ziekte niet. Wie kanker wel overleeft\, ondervindt vaak nog lang gevolgen. DESCRIPTION:Affecting global sea-level rise\,mass loss from Arctic glaciers has implications far beyond their geographical location and is relevant for related geosciences\, as well as ecological and biosciences and the general public. \nCombining in situ observations\, remote sensing\, and modeling\, the scientists quantify the mass loss of all glaciers on Svalbard during the record-warm summer of 2024\, that by far exceeds previous levels. Analyzing historic temperature records and projections of future climate\, the scientists find that temperaturelevels as in 2024 represent a raresituation for contemporary climate conditions but will be frequently reached in a few decades. The scientists suggest that the summer of 2024 in Svalbard serves as an analogue for the widespread meltdown of Arctic glaciers in a warmer world. DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy at birth for both sexes combined\, from 1990 to 2021 by country\, ordered by 2019 life expectancy\, click picture to read\nDecades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011\, well before the COVID-19 pandemic\, for reasons which remain disputed. \nThe writers of the article ‘Changing life expectancy in European countries 1990–2021‘ aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. They used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases\, Injuries\, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth\, causes of death\, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria\, Belgium\, Denmark\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Greece\, Iceland\, Ireland\, Italy\, Luxembourg\, the Netherlands\, Norway\, Portugal\, Spain\, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England\, Northern Ireland\, Scotland\, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011\, 2011–19\, and 2019–21.
