DESCRIPTION:On 28 March 2025 at 12:50:54 MMT (06:20:54 UTC)\, the Mw 7.7 2025 Myanmar earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar\, with an epicenter close to Mandalay\, the country’s second-largest city\, the strike-slip faulting shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). \nIt was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighboring Thailand. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Ze verwachten van de regering dat die zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen de ambtenaren vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten zij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen:\n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza.\n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht;\n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ).\n4. DESCRIPTION:Several years ago\, a cosmic particle detector in Antarctica observed a series of unusual radio signals\, according to an international research group that includes scientists from Penn State. \nThe strange radio pulses were detected between 2016 and 2018 by NASA’s Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)\, a range of instruments flown on balloons high above Antarctica that are designed to detect radio waves from cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere\, and a new study provides additional context to the nearly decade-old results. The goal of the ANITA experiment was to gain insight into distant cosmic events by analyzing signals that reach the Earth. Rather than reflecting off the ice\, the signals — a form of radio waves — appeared to be coming from below the horizon\, an orientation that could not be explained by the current understanding of particle physics and may have hinted at new types of particles or interactions previously unknown to science\, the team said at the time. A new study using the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina analyzed 15 years of cosmic data to try to make sense of those signals. The peacekeeping force is envisaged only to be deployed the moment Ukraine and Russia signs a “comprehensive ceasefire agreement” or “peace deal” to settle the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The initiative\, led by the United Kingdom and France\, was announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on 2 March 2025\, following the 2025 London Summit on Ukraine under the motto “securing our future”. The stated aim of the initiative is to facilitate the peace negotiation attempts launched and mediated by the United States between Ukraine and Russia in February 2025\, by helping to build up strong enough security guarantees for Ukraine to ensure a potential reached ceasefire or peace deal would be lasting. Besides serving the role as building up a potential peacekeeping force\, the coalition have also expressed readiness to increase military support for Ukraine and strengthen economic sanctions against Russia\, in the event that the ongoing negotiations for a “comprehensive ceasefire” or “peace deal” would fail. DESCRIPTION:Using the unique infrared sensitivity of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope\, researchers can examine ancient galaxies to probe secrets of the early universe. \nAn international team of astronomers has identified bright hydrogen emission from a galaxy in an unexpectedly early time in the universe’s history. The surprise finding is challenging researchers to explain how this light could have pierced the thick fog of neutral hydrogen that filled space at that time. The Webb telescope discovered the incredibly distant galaxy JADES-GS-z13-1\, observed to exist just 330 million years after the big bang\, in images taken by Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) as part of the James Webb Space Telescope Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). Researchers used the galaxy’s brightness in different infrared filters to estimate its redshift\, which measures a galaxy’s distance from Earth based on how its light has been stretched out during its journey through expanding space. The NIRCam imaging yielded an initial redshift estimate of 12.9. Seeking to confirm its extreme redshift\, an international team lead by Joris Witstok of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom\, as well as the Cosmic Dawn Center and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark\, then observed the galaxy using Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph instrument. In the resulting spectrum\, the redshift was confirmed to be 13.0. \nThis equates to a galaxy seen just 330 million years after the big bang\, a small fraction of the universe’s present age of 13.8 billion years old. But an unexpected feature stood out as well: one specific\, distinctly bright wavelength of light\, known as Lyman-alpha emission\, radiated by hydrogen atoms. This emission was far stronger than astronomers thought possible at this early stage in the universe’s development. Before and during the era of reionization\, the immense amounts of neutral hydrogen fog surrounding galaxies blocked any energetic ultraviolet light they emitted\, much like the filtering effect of colored glass. Until enough stars had formed and were able to ionize the hydrogen gas\, no such light — including Lyman-alpha emission — could escape from these fledgling galaxies to reach Earth. The confirmation of Lyman-alpha radiation from this galaxy\, therefore\, has great implications for our understanding of the early universe. The source of the Lyman-alpha radiation from this galaxy is not yet known\, but it may include the first light from the earliest generation of stars to form in the universe. DESCRIPTION:Vliegverkeer en aantal melders uit omgeving Schiphol stijgen gelijkmatig. \nIn 2024 namen het vliegverkeer op Schiphol en het aantal melders uit de omgeving van Schiphol gelijkmatig toe\, dat blijkt uit rapportage van het Bewoners Aanspreekpunt Schiphol (BAS). Het vliegverkeer en het aantal mensen dat een melding deed bij BAS namen beiden met 8% toe. Het totaal aantal vliegbewegingen van en naar Schiphol ligt iets onder het niveau van 2019. Het aantal meldingen binnen de focusgroep steeg met 26% in vergelijking met 2023 tot 232.585 meldingen. Er werden minder meldingen ingediend over de moderne vloot\, die stiller is. De rapportage van BAS gaat over het gebruiksjaar 2024\, de periode van 1 november 2023 tot en met 31 oktober 2024. De rapportage focust zich in de analyses en conclusies op mensen  die tussen de 1 en 500 meldingen per jaar doen. Het aantal veelmelders\, mensen die meer dan 500 meldingen per jaar doen\, steeg het afgelopen jaar met 12% tot 95. In totaal werden er door deze groep 144.015 meldingen gedaan. \nLinks:\nBAS

Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. Even daarvoor waren ze getrouwd en ze dachten met deze actie de aandacht die hun huwelijk trok te kunnen aanwenden voor de bevordering van de wereldvrede. In het Amsterdamse Hilton bracht het jonge paar inderdaad de gehele tijd door in bed\, waarbij de pers aanwezig was. ‘Hair Peace’ en ‘Bed Peace’\, die protestleuzen sierden de ramen van de kamer. In bed lagen die week John Lennon en Yoko Ono\, om een week lang te praten over vrede en de toenmalige oorlog in Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is marked each year on the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett\, a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) when he was abducted by armed gunman in 1985; his body was finally found in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley in 2009. \nThe Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members has taken on even greater importance in recent years\, as attacks against the United Nations intensify.  This is a day to mobilize action\, demand justice and strengthen their resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers\, as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press. Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945\, hundreds of brave men and women have lost their lives in its service. During the 1990s\, the growing number and scale of UN peacekeeping missions put many more at risk. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a time for reflection\, but it is also a time for education. \nDespite myths to the contrary\, enslaved Africans enriched the Americas not just through their labour but also through a transfer of vital skills and knowledge. In addition\, rather than accepting their fate\, they engaged in powerful acts of resistance. The United Nations works to highlight such stories through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery\, which is managed by the Department of Global Communications\, and the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project\, which is run by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 2006\, the United Nations General Assembly\, through resolution 61/19\, recognized that “the slave trade and slavery are among the worst violations of human rights in the history of humanity\, bearing in mind particularly their scale and duration” and designated 25 March 2007 as the International Day for the Commemoration of the Two-hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. \nThe following year\, through resolution 62/122\, it designated 25 March as an annual International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, beginning in 2008. The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 1807. From that day on\, “all manner of dealing and reading in the purchase\, sale\, barter\, or transfer of slaves or of persons intending to be sold\, transferred\, used\, or dealt with as slaves\, practiced or carried in\, at\, or from any part of the coast or countries of Africa shall be abolished\, prohibited and declared to be unlawful”. However\, while the act abolished the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans\, it did not abolish slavery\, which still continued for decades. Volgens het internationaal recht zijn de nederzettingen illegaal. Hoe kan het Nederlandse bedrijf Booking.com daar dan toch zijn activiteiten voortzetten? Argos onderzocht de afgelopen maanden de handel op de Westelijke Jordaanoever\, en sprak met anonieme medewerkers van het bedrijf. De kritiek zwelt steeds verder aan vanaf de werkvloer. Op de Westoever neemt de Israëlische onderzoeker Dror Etkes ons mee naar verschillende accommodaties. Tussen de kamelen staan daar\, midden in de woestijn\, enkele stacaravans. Dit is een voormalig outpost. Een nederzetting van kolonisten waar zelfs Israël lange tijd officieel geen ruimte aan bood. Maar het is ook een agro-toeristische trekpleister.
