DESCRIPTION:De Marathon Rotterdam is een jaarlijks terugkerend hardloopevenement over een afstand van 42\,190 kilometer\, dat gehouden wordt in Rotterdam. \nDe marathon wordt meestal in de maand april gelopen. DESCRIPTION:Op 11 april\, de geboortedag van Sir James Parkinson\, wordt elk jaar Wereld Parkinson dag gehouden; wereldwijd wordt dan aandacht gevraagd voor de ziekte van Parkinson\, ook wordt de behoefte aan onderzoek en specialisten op het gebied van deze ziekte onder de aandacht gebracht. \nDe ziekte van Parkinson is een degeneratieve ziekte in het centraal zenuwstelsel waarbij zenuwcellen langzaam afsterven (“degenereren”). Dit leidt in eerste plaats tot stoornissen in de beweging: parkinson wordt daarom als bewegingsstoornis beschouwd. De symptomen komen langzaam op en worden naarmate de ziekte vordert ernstiger. In de beginfase van de ziekte bestaan de voornaamste symptomen uit schudden\, spasmen\, traagheid in beweging en moeite met lopen. Daarnaast kunnen ook gedrags- en cognitieve problemen voorkomen. In latere stadia is er een verhoogde kans op dementie. Ruim één derde van de parkinsonpatiënten lijdt aan depressie. De kenmerkende verschijnselen samen worden aangeduid met de naam parkinsonisme. De oorzaak van de ziekte van Parkinson is doorgaans onbekend. De ziekte ontstaat waarschijnlijk vanwege een combinatie van genetische en omgevingsfactoren. Familieleden van patiënten hebben een grotere kans om de ziekte ook te krijgen. Mensen die in aanraking zijn gekomen met bepaalde pesticiden en mensen die eerder hoofdletsel hebben opgelopen\, lopen meer risico de ziekte te ontwikkelen\, terwijl rokers en mensen die koffie of thee drinken minder risico lopen. Er is geen middel waarmee parkinson kan worden genezen. DESCRIPTION:The Israeli military systematically uses dogs to brutalise Palestinians\, including children\, elderly people\, and detainees\, sometimes with fatal consequences\, evidence obtained by SOMO reveals a significant risk that police dogs exported from the Netherlands are used by the Israeli army in international law abuses. \nThe Netherlands is a key country from where police-trained dogs are exported to the Israeli army\, but corporate confidentiality means that no public information is available about the suppliers or the number of dogs supplied to the Israeli army by Dutch companies. SOMO discovered that police dog companies in the Netherlands obtained the required veterinary certificates for the export of at least 110 dogs to Israel between October 2023 and February 2025. One hundred of these certificates were granted to the company Four Winds K9\, a police dog training centre in the southern Dutch village of Geffen. Early 2024 in Nablus\, occupied West Bank. Amna’s three-year-old son Ahmad is sleeping in her arms as she gets her other children ready for school. Suddenly\, Israeli soldiers force their way into her home with a large police dog. The dog attacks Amna and Ahmad\, clenching its jaw around the toddler’s buttocks for several minutes. “I could hear my son scream in pain and my daughters were shrieking and crying out of fear and terror\,” Amna recalls. The soldiers drag the dog and Ahmad down the stairs and out of the building\, hitting Amna with the butt of a rifle to stop her from reaching Ahmad. When the soldiers return Ahmed to his mother\, he is “unconscious\, wrapped in a bloodied foil blanket.” Ahmad is hospitalised for eight days and needs 42 internal and external stitches\, while Amna’s other children suffer “severe psychological trauma after everything they witnessed.” From Gaza to the West Bank\, from Palestinian homes to Israeli detention centres\, Palestinians have shared horrifying testimonies of dog attacks by the Israeli military. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture. DESCRIPTION:The MICrONS Project published package of papers about an unprecedented dataset of high resolution anatomical images of individual cells in mouse visual cortex\, mapped on to their responses. \nThis integrated view of function and structure lays a foundation for discovering the computational bases of cortical circuits. A cubic millimetre might not sound like much — roughly the size of a grain of sand — but to neuroscientists\, it is enormous. One cubic millimetre of a mammalian brain contains tens of thousands of neurons with hundreds of millions of connections\, or synapses\, between them. For most of the history of neuroscience\, tracing the detailed connectivity (or connectomics) and measuring activity of neurons at such a large scale was unthinkable. Instead\, neuroscientists worked at more manageable scales — even single pairs of connected cells can provide important information\, especially when accrued over hundreds of labs doing similar experiments. Nevertheless\, the goal of studying millimetre-scale volumes of brain in such detail started to come closer after a period of intense focus on new neuroscience technologies in the 1990s and 2000s. This period led to tools to label\, trace and image the activity of neurons in increasingly large populations. However\, the fundamental problem of scale remained. A complete reconstruction of a cubic millimetre of neurons requires roughly a petabyte of data. Tracing the intricate branches of the neurons is far too time consuming to do by hand\, so improved tools for automation were needed. A parallel revolution in computing — increased computing power and advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence — suddenly made those challenges tractable. This brings us to today’s announcement of the MICrONS project. The team made and designed tools to allow dense neural reconstruction at scale. The resulting data set includes 200\,000 cells and 523 million connections in the primary visual cortex and surrounding areas of a mouse. A unique contribution of the MICrONS project is that it also includes in vivo functional data from around 75\,000 of the neurons. Even landmark connectomics studies\, such as FlyWire\, include only the anatomical data. DESCRIPTION:Update stikstofkaart en nieuwe aanpak: hoe halen we de stikstofdoelen wel? \nStikstofprofessor Jan Willem Erisman en Ton Brouwer hebben het rapport ‘Wat is de opgave voor de landbouw om de stikstofdoelen in 2030 en daarna te halen?‘ uitgebracht met daarin scenario’s om de stikstofdoelen voor de landbouw in 2030 wél te halen. De boodschap aan politiek Den Haag: ‘Kijk naar deze aanpak\, het kan wel.’ Er ligt een duidelijke uitspraak van de rechter voor de overheid. Vijftig procent van de meest kwetsbare Natura2000-gebieden moeten in 2030 en de jaren daarna beschermd zijn tegen stikstof. Greenpeace beargumenteerde dat dit kon\, maar deed dit niet met berekeningen. Samen met andere experts doen hoogleraar Jan Willem Erisman en Ton Brouwer\, eigenaar van adviesbureau Gispoint\, dat nu wel. Stikstofreductie in de landbouw is hun uitgangspunt. Ze presenteerden de berekeningen in de Tweede Kamer. Erisman en Brouwer schetsen verschillende scenario’s. De belangrijkste: de huidige berekeningen baseren zich op drie sectoren: landbouw\, verkeer en industrie\, en buitenland. Dat wordt volgens Erisman en Brouwer op een hoop gegooid en zo kom je op het getal van 53% procent. Dat is het percentage van de uitstoot dat de landbouw zou moeten reduceren om de afgesproken 50% bescherming voor natuurgebieden te halen. Wij zeggen nu: dat is niet fair. Rechtvaardiger zou zijn om iedere sector verantwoordelijk te stellen voor zijn eigen aandeel in de overschrijding. Dan krijg je andere cijfers\, dat betekent dat je buitenlandbeleid moet gaan voeren op dit thema. Bereken ook stikstofoxiden (NOx) apart\, dus maak aparte berekeningen voor verkeer en industrie en voor landbouw. Zij komen dan uit op een veel lagere opgave voor de landbouw: namelijk 30% van de uitstoot in plaats van 53%. De andere twee sectoren moeten dan ook de uitstoot voldoende verminderen. Erisman verwijst hierbij nog naar de vorige stikstofkaart en het vorige rapport uit 2021\, want als die methode zou worden gebruikt zou er nog minder hoeven te worden gereduceerd en dat is nog gerichter en effectiever. \nLinks:\nUpdate stikstofkaart en nieuwe aanpak: hoe halen we de stikstofdoelen wel?

DESCRIPTION:Op de Dag van de Roma worden de rijke culturele erfenis en tradities van de Roma en hun bijdragen aan Europa en de Verenigde Staten erkend. \nDe datum 8 april werd uitgeroepen tot de internationale Romadag omdat het eerste Internationaal Romani Congres\, een serie van congressen voor discussie onder Roma wereldwijd\, werd gehouden op 8 april 1971 in Londen. Aan dit congres namen 23 vertegenwoordigers uit 9 landen deel: Tsjecho-Slowakije\, Finland\, Frankrijk\, Groot-Brittannië\, Hongarije\, Ierland\, Spanje en Joegoslavië. Tijdens het eerste congres werd de in 1933 ontworpen vlag van de Roma officieel erkend en werd het lied Djelem\, djelem uitgeroepen tot volkslied van de Roma. Het is een dag waarop aandacht wordt gegeven aan hun leefsituatie. Roma zijn de meest achtergestelde etnische groep van Europa. In heel Europa worden de fundamentele rechten van de Roma nog steeds regelmatig geschonden. Herhaaldelijke gevallen van racistisch geweld en haatzaaierij tegen Roma worden regelmatig gemeld. Roma worden ook gediscrimineerd bij toegang tot werk\, onderwijs\, gezondheidszorg en openbare en sociale diensten. Het meest alarmerende zijn de schendingen van de huisvestingsrechten van de Roma in Europa. De schendingen beperken zich niet alleen tot geen toegang hebben tot huisvesting. Het gaat ook over gedwongen uitzetting en systemische vernietiging van Romeinse nederzettingen. Feit blijft dat het recht op behoorlijke huisvesting ook een fundamenteel mensenrecht is. In Nederland wordt een onderscheid gemaakt tussen Sinti en Roma\, het verschil heeft te maken met datum van vestiging. Met Roma wordt bedoeld de groep mensen die voornamelijk uit Oost-Europa komen en zich in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw in Nederland vestigden.
