DESCRIPTION:2024 European State of the Climate: Striking east-west contrast and widespread flooding in Europe’s warmest year. \nThe European State of the Climate 2024 (ESOTC 2024) report\, released on 15 April 2025 by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)\, involves around 100 scientific contributors providing holistic yet concise insights into Europe’s climate\, including through resources such as a brand-new graphics gallery with 130 charts and infographics. C3S is implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts on behalf of the European Commission. Since 2018\, the service has released the ESOTC\, a detailed analysis of Europe’s climate for the previous year\, going beyond annual temperature with analyses of a wide range of climate variables\, from heat and cold stress to sunshine duration and cloudiness\, from wildfires to glaciers and much more. Europe is the fastest-warming continent\, and the impacts of climate change here are clear. 2024 was the warmest year on record for Europe\, with record temperatures in central\, eastern and southeastern regions. Storms were often severe and flooding widespread\, claiming at least 335 lives and affecting an estimated 413\,000 people. During the year\, there was a striking east-west contrast in climate conditions\, with extremely dry and often record-warm conditions in the east\, and warm but wet conditions in the west. \nSpotlight topics for the ESOTC 2024 include an overview of flooding in Europe\, with a focus on the extreme events in central and eastern Europe associated with Storm Boris\, and those in Valencia\, Spain\, as well as the extreme heat and drought in southeastern Europe during the summer.  30% of the European river network exceeded the ‘high’ flood threshold during the year\, while 12% exceeded the ‘severe’ flood threshold. In September\, Storm Boris affected hundreds of thousands of people\, with flooding\, fatalities and damage in parts of Germany\, Poland\, Austria\, Hungary\, Czechia\, Slovakia\, Romania and Italy.  At the end of October\, Spain saw extreme precipitation and flooding leading to devastating impacts and fatalities in the province of Valencia and neighbouring regions.  Southeastern Europe experienced its longest heatwave on record in July 2024\, lasting 13 consecutive days and affecting 55% of the region. There were record-breaking numbers of days with at least ‘strong heat stress’ (66) and tropical nights (23) in southeastern Europe during summer.  For the first time\, these spotlight sections also provide information on trends in flooding\, and extreme heat and drought in Europe\, summarising key findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). DESCRIPTION:In het hele land kan er veel Per- en PolyFluoralkylStoffen (PFAS) in particuliere eieren zitten\, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘Risk assessment of PFAS through consumption of home-produced eggs in the Netherlands‘\, hierdoor kunnen mensen veel PFAS binnenkrijgen als zij deze eieren eten. \nOmdat aan een ei niet te zien is hoeveel PFAS erin zit\, adviseert het RIVM om in heel Nederland geen particuliere eieren te eten. Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe PFAS in deze eieren komt en of er iets aan kan worden gedaan\, dat wordt onderzocht het RIVM. Commerciële eieren uit een winkel of van de markt kunnen wel worden gegeten\, want daar zit veel minder PFAS in. Particuliere eieren komen van kippen die als hobby worden gehouden\, bijvoorbeeld in achtertuinen\, moestuinen\, dierenweitjes en zorg- en kinderboerderijen. Het RIVM deed de risicobeoordeling omdat in 2024 hoge hoeveelheden PFAS in particuliere eieren rond het bedrijf Chemours in Zuid-Holland waren gevonden. De typen PFAS in deze eieren waren anders dan het bedrijf gebruikte. Zo ontstond de vraag hoe het in de rest van het land zit. Het RIVM berekende hoeveel PFAS mensen kunnen binnenkrijgen via particuliere eieren van 60 locaties\, verspreid over heel Nederland. Deze hoeveelheden zijn vergeleken met de gezondheidskundige grenswaarde. Als mensen een langere tijd meer PFAS binnenkrijgen dan deze grenswaarde\, kan dat schadelijk zijn voor hun gezondheid. Via de eieren van 31 locaties krijgen mensen al meer PFAS binnen dan de gezondheidskundige grenswaarde als zij 1 ei of minder per week eten. Op 10 locaties kunnen ze maximaal 1 ei per week eten zonder over deze grenswaarde heen te gaan. Op 5 locaties is dit bij maximaal 2 eieren het geval\, op 3 locaties bij maximaal 3 en op 2 locaties bij maximaal 4 eieren. Op 9 locaties kunnen mensen elke week meer dan 4 eieren eten zonder de grenswaarde te overschrijden. Mensen krijgen al veel PFAS binnen via voedingsmiddelen en drinkwater. De hoeveelheid die mensen via particuliere eieren binnenkrijgen\, komt daar bovenop. Het is daarom af te raden om producten te eten waar veel PFAS in zit\, zoals particuliere eieren. \nLinks:\nRIVM adviseert geen particuliere eieren meer te eten

DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. Beginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nThe team explore one of the biggest stories in space news\, the ‘city killer’ asteroid 2024 YR4. First observed on 27 December 2024\, it soon became one of the biggest threats from an asteroid ever detected\, with the potential to cause a heat blast that could vaporise solid rock\, wind blasts five times the speed of the strongest hurricane and a shockwave that would flatten buildings and trees for hundreds of miles. This was a potential natural disaster we needed to respond to as a planet. So how well did we do? Our team of presenters are on hand to find out\, and while YR4 was later downgraded to a near miss\, what has it told us about our ability to react when an asteroid strike is on its way? George Dransfield kicks off\, talking us through the damage an asteroid like YR4 could do and why some say we are overdue an asteroid strike of this size. But how will we know if it’s truly on its way? Chris Lintott meets Dr Meg Schwamb at a football pitch – which it turns out is the perfect place to explain how the probability of a strike is calculated. Following the same highs and lows they do when a ball just misses the goal\, they explain why the probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting earth first rose so quickly before it fell. DESCRIPTION:Rebellen van Extinction Rebellion (XR) en Scientist Rebellion (SR) protesteren bij TNO tegen nieuwe gasboringen\, ze roepen overheidsadviseurs TNO en de Mijnraad op tot een negatief advies over boringen bij Ternaard om zo de Waddenzee te beschermen. \nOp 14 april 2025 blokkeren dertig rebellen van XR en SR de ingangen van TNO op Science Park Utrecht. De blokkade wordt opgeheven zo gauw TNO en de Mijnraad de minister negatief adviseren over de plannen van de NAM om onder het Wad te boren. De NAM – een samenwerkingsverband tussen Shell en ExxonMobil – wil boren onder de Waddenzee voor een opbrengst van slechts twee maanden Nederlands gasverbruik. Dat zal de ondergang van dit UNESCO werelderfgoed inluiden\, want wanneer de bodem zakt terwijl de zeespiegel stijgt\, valt de Waddenzee niet meer droog. UNESCO heeft al aangegeven dat ze de status van werelderfgoed bij nieuwe gasboringen kan intrekken. Ecologen hebben aangetoond dat eerdere gasboringen bij Ameland effecten hadden op het gehele ecosysteem van dieren en planten op het Wad. Meer dan vierhonderd wetenschappers riepen de overheid in 2022 al op om geen nieuwe boringen onder de Waddenzee toe te staan. En ook het Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen heeft in maart vorig jaar negatief geadviseerd over de vernietigende plannen van de NAM. Met de bevindingen van het KNMI over het versneld stijgen van de zeespiegel is de ruimte om veilig te boren onder het Wad verdwenen. De wetenschap is helder: om zicht te houden op een planeet die leefbaar is voor iedereen moeten fossiele brandstoffen zo veel mogelijk in de grond blijven. Goed klimaatbeleid begint met een nieuwe norm: een verbod op nieuwe fossiele projecten [8]. DESCRIPTION:De ziekte van Chagas is een tropische vectorziekte die voorkomt bij de mens en wel voornamelijk in Zuid-Amerika. \nDe verwekker is een protozoön genaamd Trypanosomacruzi\, die wordt overgebracht naar mensen en andere zoogdieren door de roofwants Triatomainfestans. De ziekteverwekker is verwant aan die van de Afrikaanse slaapziekte en veroorzaakt ook gelijksoortige symptomen. Acute symptomen zijn: hevige koorts\, bloedarmoede (anemie)\, eenzijdige zwelling in het gezicht of ooglid\, slaperigheid en algehele vermoeidheid\, hoofdpijn en braakneigingen. De ziekte kan in de eerste periode van een tot enkele maanden nog behandeld worden\, na deze incubatietijd is de ziekte niet meer te behandelen. In Zuid-Amerika is deze ziekte een groot probleem en sterven er veel voornamelijk arme mensen aan. Tot nu toe is er geen goed geneesmiddel voor de ziekte van Chagas gevonden. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nDe natuur op het Hijkerveld in Drenthe barst uit haar voegen tijdens onze zonovergoten filmdagen. Adders en bosmieren komen tevoorschijn. Kraanvogels hebben hier overwinterd en maken zich klaar om te broeden\, net als wilde zwanen. Een bijzonder stukje natuur dat we danken aan een oude aardappelmeelfabriek. Menno Bentveld duikt in de onontdekte wereld van de knutten\, een grote bedreiging voor de Schoonebeeker schapen die de heide beheren en via de steekvlieg het blauwtongvirus krijgen. DESCRIPTION:Op 11 april\, de geboortedag van Sir James Parkinson\, wordt elk jaar Wereld Parkinson dag gehouden; wereldwijd wordt dan aandacht gevraagd voor de ziekte van Parkinson\, ook wordt de behoefte aan onderzoek en specialisten op het gebied van deze ziekte onder de aandacht gebracht. \nDe ziekte van Parkinson is een degeneratieve ziekte in het centraal zenuwstelsel waarbij zenuwcellen langzaam afsterven (“degenereren”). Dit leidt in eerste plaats tot stoornissen in de beweging: parkinson wordt daarom als bewegingsstoornis beschouwd. De symptomen komen langzaam op en worden naarmate de ziekte vordert ernstiger. In de beginfase van de ziekte bestaan de voornaamste symptomen uit schudden\, spasmen\, traagheid in beweging en moeite met lopen. Daarnaast kunnen ook gedrags- en cognitieve problemen voorkomen. In latere stadia is er een verhoogde kans op dementie. Ruim één derde van de parkinsonpatiënten lijdt aan depressie. De kenmerkende verschijnselen samen worden aangeduid met de naam parkinsonisme. De oorzaak van de ziekte van Parkinson is doorgaans onbekend. De ziekte ontstaat waarschijnlijk vanwege een combinatie van genetische en omgevingsfactoren. Familieleden van patiënten hebben een grotere kans om de ziekte ook te krijgen. Mensen die in aanraking zijn gekomen met bepaalde pesticiden en mensen die eerder hoofdletsel hebben opgelopen\, lopen meer risico de ziekte te ontwikkelen\, terwijl rokers en mensen die koffie of thee drinken minder risico lopen. Er is geen middel waarmee parkinson kan worden genezen. DESCRIPTION:The Israeli military systematically uses dogs to brutalise Palestinians\, including children\, elderly people\, and detainees\, sometimes with fatal consequences\, evidence obtained by SOMO reveals a significant risk that police dogs exported from the Netherlands are used by the Israeli army in international law abuses. \nThe Netherlands is a key country from where police-trained dogs are exported to the Israeli army\, but corporate confidentiality means that no public information is available about the suppliers or the number of dogs supplied to the Israeli army by Dutch companies. SOMO discovered that police dog companies in the Netherlands obtained the required veterinary certificates for the export of at least 110 dogs to Israel between October 2023 and February 2025. One hundred of these certificates were granted to the company Four Winds K9\, a police dog training centre in the southern Dutch village of Geffen. Early 2024 in Nablus\, occupied West Bank. Amna’s three-year-old son Ahmad is sleeping in her arms as she gets her other children ready for school. Suddenly\, Israeli soldiers force their way into her home with a large police dog. The dog attacks Amna and Ahmad\, clenching its jaw around the toddler’s buttocks for several minutes. “I could hear my son scream in pain and my daughters were shrieking and crying out of fear and terror\,” Amna recalls. The soldiers drag the dog and Ahmad down the stairs and out of the building\, hitting Amna with the butt of a rifle to stop her from reaching Ahmad. When the soldiers return Ahmed to his mother\, he is “unconscious\, wrapped in a bloodied foil blanket.” Ahmad is hospitalised for eight days and needs 42 internal and external stitches\, while Amna’s other children suffer “severe psychological trauma after everything they witnessed.” From Gaza to the West Bank\, from Palestinian homes to Israeli detention centres\, Palestinians have shared horrifying testimonies of dog attacks by the Israeli military.
