Kortom: géén basisvoorzieningen\, wél obstakels die groei en ontwikkeling in de weg staan. Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp ziet een zorgwekkende stijging van ruim 40% in hulp voor deze basisvoorzieningen. Zonder hulp blijven kansen onbenut en dromen onbereikbaar. Daarom riep Kinderhulp de Dag van de Kinderarmoede in het leven. Omdat geen enkel kind de dupe mag zijn van armoede. Wij zorgen voor directe\, concrete hulp – zonder gedoe\, zonder stigma. Maar we doen meer. We zetten kinderarmoede op de kaart\, delen kennis en trekken in Den Haag aan de bel zo hard we kunnen. Help mee. Op 17 april\, de Dag van de Kinderarmoede. The Declaration is an international legal instrument. Via Campesina wants to mobilize for its real implementation in our territories\, and this implies that the State guarantees access to the land\, the protection of seeds facing commercialization\, putting a stop to evictions and deaths\, as well as creating measures against agrochemicals; social justice means that those who feed the world live in dignified conditions and in peace in the countryside\, without being prosecuted for defending their rights and territories. In this current context of extractivism and the alarming rate at which lands are forcefully grabbed from the Peasant people\, the urgency of Agrarian Reform proves strategic. De datum is ter ere de geboortedag van de stichter van de organisatie\, Frank Schnabel\, een Canadees zakenman met hemofilie. Hemofilie is een erfelijke stoornis in de bloedstolling. Het bloed kan niet goed stollen omdat een bepaalde stollingsfactor in het bloed ontbreekt. Bij hemofilie blijft de patiënt bij een verwonding of inwendige bloeding langer bloeden dan mensen zonder hemofilie\, ook bij een relatief klein ongeval zoals een sneetje of een bloedneus. Er zijn twee typen hemofilie. Bij hemofilie A heeft de patiënt onvoldoende factor VIII\, bij hemofilie B is er te weinig factor IX. Een tekort van een van de andere stollingsfactoren heet niet hemofilie maar is een ander stollingsprobleem. DESCRIPTION:Astronomers have detected the most promising signs yet of a possible biosignature outside the solar system\, although they remain cautious. \nUsing data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)\, the astronomers\, led by the University of Cambridge\, have detected the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)\, in the atmosphere of the exoplanet K2-18b\, which orbits its star in the habitable zone. On Earth\, DMS and DMDS are only produced by life\, primarily microbial life such as marine phytoplankton. While an unknown chemical process may be the source of these molecules in K2-18b’s atmosphere\, the results are the strongest evidence yet that life may exist on a planet outside our solar system. The observations have reached the ‘three-sigma’ level of statistical significance – meaning there is a 0.3% probability that they occurred by chance. To reach the accepted classification for scientific discovery\, the observations would have to cross the five-sigma threshold\, meaning there would be below a 0.00006% probability they occurred by chance. The researchers say between 16 and 24 hours of follow-up observation time with JWST may help them reach the all-important five-sigma significance. Their results are reported in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Earlier observations of K2-18b — which is 8.6 times as massive and 2.6 times as large as Earth\, and lies 124 light years away in the constellation of Leo — identified methane and carbon dioxide in its atmosphere. This was the first time that carbon-based molecules were discovered in the atmosphere of an exoplanet in the habitable zone. \nThose results were consistent with predictions for a ‘Hycean’ planet: a habitable ocean-covered world underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. However\, another\, weaker signal hinted at the possibility of something else happening on K2-18b. To determine the chemical composition of the atmospheres of faraway planets\, astronomers analyse the light from its parent star as the planet transits\, or passes in front of the star as seen from the Earth. As K2-18b transits\, JWST can detect a drop in stellar brightness\, and a tiny fraction of starlight passes through the planet’s atmosphere before reaching Earth. The absorption of some of the starlight in the planet’s atmosphere leaves imprints in the stellar spectrum that astronomers can piece together to determine the constituent gases of the exoplanet’s atmosphere. The earlier\, tentative\, inference of DMS was made using JWST’s NIRISS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) and NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instruments\, which together cover the near-infrared (0.8-5 micron) range of wavelengths. The new\, independent observation used JWST’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) in the mid-infrared (6-12 micron) range. DMS and DMDS are molecules from the same chemical family\, and both are predicted to be biosignatures. \nBoth molecules have overlapping spectral features in the observed wavelength range\, although further observations will help differentiate between the two molecules. However\, the concentrations of DMS and DMDS in K2-18b’s atmosphere are very different than on Earth\, where they are generally below one part per billion by volume. On K2-18b\, they are estimated to be thousands of times stronger – over ten parts per million. Madhusudhan says that while the results are exciting\, it’s vital to obtain more data before claiming that life has been found on another world. He says that while he is cautiously optimistic\, there could be previously unknown chemical processes at work on K2-18b that may account for the observations. Working with colleagues\, he is hoping to conduct further theoretical and experimental work to determine whether DMS and DMDS can be produced non-biologically at the level currently inferred. While he is not yet claiming a definitive discovery\, Madhusudhan says that with powerful tools like JWST and future planned telescopes\, humanity is taking new steps toward answering that most essential of questions: are we alone? The James Webb Space Telescope is a collaboration between NASA\, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). DESCRIPTION:2024 European State of the Climate: Striking east-west contrast and widespread flooding in Europe’s warmest year. \nThe European State of the Climate 2024 (ESOTC 2024) report\, released on 15 April 2025 by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)\, involves around 100 scientific contributors providing holistic yet concise insights into Europe’s climate\, including through resources such as a brand-new graphics gallery with 130 charts and infographics. C3S is implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts on behalf of the European Commission. Since 2018\, the service has released the ESOTC\, a detailed analysis of Europe’s climate for the previous year\, going beyond annual temperature with analyses of a wide range of climate variables\, from heat and cold stress to sunshine duration and cloudiness\, from wildfires to glaciers and much more. Europe is the fastest-warming continent\, and the impacts of climate change here are clear. 2024 was the warmest year on record for Europe\, with record temperatures in central\, eastern and southeastern regions. Storms were often severe and flooding widespread\, claiming at least 335 lives and affecting an estimated 413\,000 people. During the year\, there was a striking east-west contrast in climate conditions\, with extremely dry and often record-warm conditions in the east\, and warm but wet conditions in the west. \nSpotlight topics for the ESOTC 2024 include an overview of flooding in Europe\, with a focus on the extreme events in central and eastern Europe associated with Storm Boris\, and those in Valencia\, Spain\, as well as the extreme heat and drought in southeastern Europe during the summer.  30% of the European river network exceeded the ‘high’ flood threshold during the year\, while 12% exceeded the ‘severe’ flood threshold. In September\, Storm Boris affected hundreds of thousands of people\, with flooding\, fatalities and damage in parts of Germany\, Poland\, Austria\, Hungary\, Czechia\, Slovakia\, Romania and Italy.  At the end of October\, Spain saw extreme precipitation and flooding leading to devastating impacts and fatalities in the province of Valencia and neighbouring regions.  Southeastern Europe experienced its longest heatwave on record in July 2024\, lasting 13 consecutive days and affecting 55% of the region. There were record-breaking numbers of days with at least ‘strong heat stress’ (66) and tropical nights (23) in southeastern Europe during summer.  For the first time\, these spotlight sections also provide information on trends in flooding\, and extreme heat and drought in Europe\, summarising key findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). DESCRIPTION:In het hele land kan er veel Per- en PolyFluoralkylStoffen (PFAS) in particuliere eieren zitten\, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘Risk assessment of PFAS through consumption of home-produced eggs in the Netherlands‘\, hierdoor kunnen mensen veel PFAS binnenkrijgen als zij deze eieren eten. \nOmdat aan een ei niet te zien is hoeveel PFAS erin zit\, adviseert het RIVM om in heel Nederland geen particuliere eieren te eten. Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe PFAS in deze eieren komt en of er iets aan kan worden gedaan\, dat wordt onderzocht het RIVM. Commerciële eieren uit een winkel of van de markt kunnen wel worden gegeten\, want daar zit veel minder PFAS in. Particuliere eieren komen van kippen die als hobby worden gehouden\, bijvoorbeeld in achtertuinen\, moestuinen\, dierenweitjes en zorg- en kinderboerderijen. Het RIVM deed de risicobeoordeling omdat in 2024 hoge hoeveelheden PFAS in particuliere eieren rond het bedrijf Chemours in Zuid-Holland waren gevonden. De typen PFAS in deze eieren waren anders dan het bedrijf gebruikte. Zo ontstond de vraag hoe het in de rest van het land zit. Het RIVM berekende hoeveel PFAS mensen kunnen binnenkrijgen via particuliere eieren van 60 locaties\, verspreid over heel Nederland. Deze hoeveelheden zijn vergeleken met de gezondheidskundige grenswaarde. Als mensen een langere tijd meer PFAS binnenkrijgen dan deze grenswaarde\, kan dat schadelijk zijn voor hun gezondheid. Via de eieren van 31 locaties krijgen mensen al meer PFAS binnen dan de gezondheidskundige grenswaarde als zij 1 ei of minder per week eten. Op 10 locaties kunnen ze maximaal 1 ei per week eten zonder over deze grenswaarde heen te gaan. Op 5 locaties is dit bij maximaal 2 eieren het geval\, op 3 locaties bij maximaal 3 en op 2 locaties bij maximaal 4 eieren. Op 9 locaties kunnen mensen elke week meer dan 4 eieren eten zonder de grenswaarde te overschrijden. Mensen krijgen al veel PFAS binnen via voedingsmiddelen en drinkwater. De hoeveelheid die mensen via particuliere eieren binnenkrijgen\, komt daar bovenop. Het is daarom af te raden om producten te eten waar veel PFAS in zit\, zoals particuliere eieren. \nLinks:\nRIVM adviseert geen particuliere eieren meer te eten

DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. Beginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nThe team explore one of the biggest stories in space news\, the ‘city killer’ asteroid 2024 YR4. First observed on 27 December 2024\, it soon became one of the biggest threats from an asteroid ever detected\, with the potential to cause a heat blast that could vaporise solid rock\, wind blasts five times the speed of the strongest hurricane and a shockwave that would flatten buildings and trees for hundreds of miles. This was a potential natural disaster we needed to respond to as a planet. So how well did we do? DESCRIPTION:Rebellen van Extinction Rebellion (XR) en Scientist Rebellion (SR) protesteren bij TNO tegen nieuwe gasboringen\, ze roepen overheidsadviseurs TNO en de Mijnraad op tot een negatief advies over boringen bij Ternaard om zo de Waddenzee te beschermen. \nOp 14 april 2025 blokkeren dertig rebellen van XR en SR de ingangen van TNO op Science Park Utrecht. De blokkade wordt opgeheven zo gauw TNO en de Mijnraad de minister negatief adviseren over de plannen van de NAM om onder het Wad te boren. De NAM – een samenwerkingsverband tussen Shell en ExxonMobil – wil boren onder de Waddenzee voor een opbrengst van slechts twee maanden Nederlands gasverbruik. Dat zal de ondergang van dit UNESCO werelderfgoed inluiden\, want wanneer de bodem zakt terwijl de zeespiegel stijgt\, valt de Waddenzee niet meer droog. UNESCO heeft al aangegeven dat ze de status van werelderfgoed bij nieuwe gasboringen kan intrekken. Ecologen hebben aangetoond dat eerdere gasboringen bij Ameland effecten hadden op het gehele ecosysteem van dieren en planten op het Wad. Meer dan vierhonderd wetenschappers riepen de overheid in 2022 al op om geen nieuwe boringen onder de Waddenzee toe te staan. En ook het Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen heeft in maart vorig jaar negatief geadviseerd over de vernietigende plannen van de NAM. Met de bevindingen van het KNMI over het versneld stijgen van de zeespiegel is de ruimte om veilig te boren onder het Wad verdwenen. De wetenschap is helder: om zicht te houden op een planeet die leefbaar is voor iedereen moeten fossiele brandstoffen zo veel mogelijk in de grond blijven. Goed klimaatbeleid begint met een nieuwe norm: een verbod op nieuwe fossiele projecten [8]. De ziekteverwekker is verwant aan die van de Afrikaanse slaapziekte en veroorzaakt ook gelijksoortige symptomen. Acute symptomen zijn: hevige koorts\, bloedarmoede (anemie)\, eenzijdige zwelling in het gezicht of ooglid\, slaperigheid en algehele vermoeidheid\, hoofdpijn en braakneigingen. De ziekte kan in de eerste periode van een tot enkele maanden nog behandeld worden\, na deze incubatietijd is de ziekte niet meer te behandelen. In Zuid-Amerika is deze ziekte een groot probleem en sterven er veel voornamelijk arme mensen aan. Tot nu toe is er geen goed geneesmiddel voor de ziekte van Chagas gevonden. De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nDe natuur op het Hijkerveld in Drenthe barst uit haar voegen tijdens onze zonovergoten filmdagen. Adders en bosmieren komen tevoorschijn. Kraanvogels hebben hier overwinterd en maken zich klaar om te broeden\, net als wilde zwanen. Een bijzonder stukje natuur dat we danken aan een oude aardappelmeelfabriek. Menno Bentveld duikt in de onontdekte wereld van de knutten\, een grote bedreiging voor de Schoonebeeker schapen die de heide beheren en via de steekvlieg het blauwtongvirus krijgen. Start en finish zijn op de Coolsingel voor het stadhuis. Sinds 2018 wordt echter gestart op de Schiedamsedijk aan de voet van de Erasmusbrug en gefinisht op de Coolsingel. De minimumleeftijd om te mogen deelnemen is twintig jaar. Naast de marathon worden ook andere loopevenementen georganiseerd\, zoals: \nThe Marathon Rotterdam Walk\, bij deze stadswandeling wandelen de lopers de dag voor de NN Marathon Rotterdam door de stad finishen ook op de Coolsingel. De hele route van 5\, 10 of 15 km is geflankeerd meerdere muzikale acts. Deelnemers kunnen donaties ophalen voor KWF. \nTijdens de Kids Runs kan gekozen worden uit 1 km (voor 6 tot 10 jarige kinderen) of 2\,5 km (7 tot 15 jarigen) en wordt gelopen op een deel van het echte parcours van de NN Marathon Rotterdam. De start en finish is op de Coolsingel\, waar de deelnemers door duizenden toeschouwers worden aangemoedigd. \nDe Ren tegen Kanker City Run is met een afstand van 4\,2 km een hardloopevenement dat geschikt is voor iedereen vanaf 12 jaar.
