DESCRIPTION:How Beijing abuses international institutions to terrorize its critics and extend its repressive tactics worldwide. \nChina Targets is a cross-border investigation led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that uncovers the sprawling scope and terrifying tactics of Beijing’s campaign to target regime critics living overseas. The 10-month investigation also reveals how the United Nations has become a staging ground for China’s transnational repression under Xi Jinping’s regime — and how Chinese authorities abuse Interpol red notices for political ends. ICIJ and 42 media partners interviewed 105 people in 23 countries who have been targeted by Chinese authorities in recent years for criticizing the government’s policies in public and privately. These individuals include Chinese and Hong Kong political dissidents as well as members of oppressed Uyghur and Tibetan minorities. Reporters took extraordinary security measures to protect the identities of the victims — many of whom asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation against them or their families — and to corroborate evidence of the state-sponsored harassment. ICIJ and its partners studied internal government documents\, examined secret audio and video recordings of police interrogations\, and pored over confidential U.N. and Interpol records\, court filings and intelligence reports to analyze Beijing’s authoritarian reach. Previously unseen Chinese government records spanning from 2001 to 2020\, including an internal police textbook and confidential security guidelines\, provided a unique glimpse into China’s playbook for cracking down on dissent. These closely guarded documents detailed — in the Chinese authorities’ own words — how domestic security officers should identify and control targets. The security guidelines established a template for repression that Chinese authorities use today on victims overseas\, ICIJ found. \nHalf of the 105 targets interviewed by ICIJ and its media partners stated that family members in China had been intimidated and interrogated by police or state security officials. Several said the intimidation came just hours after the targets had participated in protests or public events overseas. Sixty of the victims believed they had been followed or were being surveilled in their adopted country. Twenty-two victims said they received physical threats or were assaulted by civilians who openly supported the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Nineteen said they had received suspicious emails or experienced hacking attempts\, including by state actors. Previous ICIJ investigations exposed Beijing’s repressive policies against Muslim minorities inside China — part of the government’s sweeping program of mass surveillance and population control. China Targets documents how\, under Xi\, authorities have exported and expanded some of those repressive tactics\, in an effort to neutralize individuals perceived as threats to national security even though they are outside the country’s borders. The disarming effect of this state-sponsored intimidation is so powerful that many activists and ethnic minorities overseas have stopped their advocacy\, fearing their families back home could be harmed or imprisoned. \nICIJ discovered that not even Geneva — which the United Nations calls the “capital of peace” due to its role as the European headquarters of the U.N. and international organizations dedicated to diplomacy and human rights — was beyond the Chinese government’s frightening reach. Human rights activists and lawyers told ICIJ they had been surveilled\, harassed or intimidated by people they believe to be Chinese diplomats or government proxies\, including delegates from nongovernmental organizations. The U.N. grants thousands of NGOs “consultative status” — offering the groups certain privileges with the expectation that they act without government interference. But an ICIJ analysis of 106 such NGOs from mainland China\, Hong Kong\, Macau and Taiwan revealed that 59 are closely connected to the Chinese government or the Communist Party. Chinese authorities also abuse Interpol\, the world’s largest mechanism for police cooperation\, ICIJ and its partners found. Through Interpol\, China pursues dissidents\, powerful businesspeople and Uyghur rights advocates\, in apparent violation of Interpol’s rules. Many targets discovered they were wanted only after being stopped at a border control. China Targets reveals the scope of crackdowns on protesters during Xi Jinping’s foreign travels. During at least seven of Xi’s 31 overseas visits between 2019 and 2024\, local law enforcement infringed on dozens of protesters’ rights to shield the Chinese president from dissent\, detaining or arresting activists\, often for spurious reasons. In the cases ICIJ analyzed\, the campaign to silence opponents of the Communist Party appears to have involved local law enforcement in host countries\, revealing the extent to which China wields its political and economic power to pressure foreign governments and institutions to bend to its will. \nLinks:\nInside China’s machinery of repression — and how it crushes dissent around the world

De badgasten die per tram vanuit Rotterdam kwamen\, zijn ingeruild voor moerasvogels op het Groene Strand. We zien veel bijzondere kevers\, pluizen uilenballen om verborgen muizen te ontdekken en volgen meeuwen die vlak langs de windmolens van de Maasvlakte scheren. As large herbivores\, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment into their territory\, and amongst the last to return to regrowth forest. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs inhabit jungles\, grasslands\, swamps and cloud forests\, yet each is threatened by human activity – be that mining\, palm oil plantations\, roads or settlements. They form an important part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers\, and form one of the oldest surviving genera in the animal kingdom. Despite their size\, history and ecological importance\, tapirs remain one of the least recognised species of animals. In comparison with other animals\, tapirs feature little in the collective consciousness and are frequently misidentified by zoo visitors. \nEven in their home ranges\, tapirs receive little attention\, with exotic species featuring more prominently in zoos\, children’s books and the media. The plight of tapirs is symbolic for the wider threat to their habitats specifically\, and the world’s ecology in general. The decline of tapir populations is indicative of the general health of their ranges; their disappearance from their home ranges often marks a point of ‘no return’ for the natural environment. The destruction of forests into small\, isolated enclaves and the encroachment of human activity into pristine forests affects all native species. However\, as the largest – yet perhaps the quietest – of animals in their ranges\, tapirs disappear without trace with countless other species. All tapirs are endangered species. In alle delen van Nederland geldt dit voor de meeste werknemers als vrije dag en wordt het gevierd met verschillende festiviteiten\, waaronder de vrijmarkten en het dragen van oranje kleding. Traditioneel brengt het staatshoofd op deze dag ook een ceremonieel bezoek aan een of meer gemeenten van het land. De avond voorafgaand aan Koningsdag worden er op verschillende plekken Koningsnacht (voorheen Koninginnenacht) georganiseerd. In Den Haag heet deze nacht KoningsNach (zonder t\, voorheen KoninginneNach en sinds 2011 LIVE I LIVE) en in Rotterdam wordt deze nacht de Nacht van Oranje genoemd (gevierd in Ahoy). DESCRIPTION:Evidence of controversial Planet 9 uncovered in sky surveys taken 23 years apart\, if the object really is Planet Nine\, it would be larger than Neptune and exist 700 times further from the sun than Earth. \nPhan and Goto used sky surveys from two infrared space telescopes launched 23 years apart: the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS)\, a NASA-Netherlands-U.K. satellite launched in 1983; and AKARI\, a Japanese satellite launched in 2006. Because of Planet Nine’s long orbit\, the researchers hypothesized that the time gap between the two data sets would be enough to see the potential planet move incrementally across the night sky. From an initial catalog of about 2 million objects within the IRAS and AKARI data sets\, the researchers whittled down to pairs of dots of light whose spacing could be explained by a moving planet with a Planet Nine–like mass and distance. Then\, they removed known sources such as stars\, sources that didn’t move over time\, and sources with too much noise\, such as those near the bright galactic center. When 13 pairs remained\, they checked each by eye. Only one candidate pair survived the scrutiny. Wereldproefdierendag werd in 1979 werd op initiatief van de Engelse organisatie ‘International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals’ (deze organisatie bestaat sinds 1969) voor het eerst georganiseerd. De 24e april is de geboortedag van Lord Dowding (overleden in 1970)\, die in zijn leven fel van leer trok tegen het proefdiergebruik. Zijn vrouw\, Lady Dowding (Muriel Albino Whiting)\, nam later een groot deel van zijn werk over. DESCRIPTION:Wereldboekendag (ook bekend als Internationale dag van het boek en de auteursrechten\, en alternatief geschreven als Wereld Boeken Dag) is een evenement dat jaarlijks op 23 april wordt gehouden door UNESCO ter promotie van lezen\, publicatie en auteursrechten.\n\nDe dag werd voor het eerst gehouden in 1995. De datum 23 april werd gekozen omdat deze dag in Spanje al sinds 1923 in het teken stond van boeken. Op die dag werd de schrijver Miguel de Cervantes geëerd. Dit werd later ook opgenomen in de Spaanse viering van Sint Jorisdag (eveneens op 23 april). Een andere reden om 23 april als datum te kiezen was omdat dit de geboorte- en sterfdag was van William Shakespeare\, Miguel de Cervantes\, Garcilaso de la Vega en Josep Pla. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Ierland hanteren als enigen een andere datum voor wereldboekendag. In deze landen wordt de dag gevierd op de eerste donderdag in maart. Dit omdat 23 april nog wel eens wil samenvallen met Pasen en de hierbij horende schoolvakanties. Wereldboekendag wordt inmiddels in meer dan 100 landen gevierd\, waarbij elk land zijn eigen activiteiten organiseert. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DESCRIPTION:De Dark Sky Week gaat over lichtvervuiling en wordt iedere 3e week in april georganiseerd door International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). \nLichtvervuiling is de grote hoeveelheid kunstlicht dat ’s nachts overbodig aan is. Zoals verlichting van snelwegen en straten\, gebouwen\, objecten en assimilatieverlichting in de glastuinbouw. Dit kan het biologische dag- en nachtritme van mensen en dieren verstoren. Planten worden beïnvloed in hun groeiwijze. Elk kunstlicht dat niet nodig is\, is een vervuiler met ernstige en schadelijke gevolgen dus is dat lichtvervuiling. Het lijkt misschien onschuldig\, maar lichtvervuiling heeft verstrekkende gevolgen die schadelijk zijn voor alle levende wezens. Lichtvervuiling neemt twee keer zo snel toe als de bevolkingsgroei en 83% van de wereldbevolking leeft onder een lichtvervuilde hemel. Lichtvervuiling kan: \n\ndieren in het wild verstoren\ninvloed hebben op de gezondheid van de mens\ngeld en energie verspillen\nbijdragen aan klimaatverandering\nons zicht op het universum blokkeren\n\nAl miljarden jaren vertrouwt al het leven op het voorspelbare ritme van dag en nacht op aarde. Het zit in het DNA van alle planten en dieren gecodeerd. Mensen hebben deze cyclus radicaal verstoord door de nacht te verlichten. Planten en dieren zijn afhankelijk van de dagelijkse cyclus van licht en donker op aarde om levens ondersteunend gedrag zoals voortplanting\, voeding\, slaap en bescherming tegen roofdieren te regelen. Wetenschappelijk bewijs suggereert dat nachtelijk kunstlicht negatieve en dodelijke effecten heeft op veel wezens\, waaronder amfibieën\, vogels\, zoogdieren\, insecten en planten. \nHet blijkt dat dieren die in gebieden leven met lichtvervuiling minder nakomelingen krijgen. Ook blijkt dat dieren vervroegd uit hun winterslaap kunnen komen wat tot gevolg kan hebben dat ze door uitputting sterven. Trekvogels die de weg kwijt raken. Kunstlicht dat het broedritueel verstoort van amfibieën zoals kikkers en padden. Waar verliezers zijn zijn ook winnaars. SUMMARY:Week van de Valpreventie BE 2025
DESCRIPTION:De ‘Week van de Valpreventie’ (WvdV) is een jaarlijks weerkerende ‘vitrine’ om val- en fractuurpreventie publiek in de belangstelling te plaatsen. \nDeze campagneweek heeft als doel ouderen\, hun familie en alle gezondheidszorg- en welzijnswerkers in Vlaanderen te sensibiliseren en te informeren over val- en fractuurpreventie. Tijdens de WvdV worden alle verenigingen\, organisaties\, intermediairs\, woonzorgcentra\, gezondheids- en welzijnswerkers enz. die in contact komen met 65-plussers\, aangesproken om samen te werken rond val- en fractuurpreventie. De ‘Week van de Valpreventie’ betreft een sa menwerking tussen het Expertisecentrum Val- en fractuurpreventie Vlaanderen (EVV)\, het Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven en de Gezondheidsmakers\, met ondersteuning van het Departement Zorg. \nLinks:\nWeek van de Valpreventie BE 2025
