DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste donderdag van mei wordt World Password Day gevierd: een speciale dag uitgeroepen om het belang van sterke wachtwoorden te onderstrepen. \nHoe dan ook\, de noodzaak van sterke wachtwoorden is niet te onderschatten\, gezien de vele berichten over phishing\, ransomware en datalekken. Jim Cox van cybersecuritybedrijf Proofpoint deelt zijn tips met ons. Hij schreef ze speciaal voor thuiswerkers\, maar ze gelden net zo goed voor de particuliere gebruiker. \nTips voor wachtwoordbeheer\n• Wijzig wachtwoorden regelmatig en hergebruik ze nooit. Als je denkt dat er een kans is dat je data gevaar loopt\, neem deze voorzorgsmaatregel dan direct en stel je manager op de hoogte van het beveiligingsprobleem.\n• Schrijf nooit je wachtwoorden ergens op. Maar als je je wachtwoord dan toch moet opschrijven\, zorg er dan in ieder geval voor dat deze niet zichtbaar is.\n• Gebruik een wachtwoordmanager om willekeurige wachtwoorden te maken die veilig worden opgeslagen\, gecodeerd en toegankelijk zijn op alle persoonlijke apparaten. Dergelijke software is relatief eenvoudig te implementeren en beschikbaar als een cloud-gebaseerde dienst\, waardoor het een verstandige investering is voor bedrijven\n• Implementeer\, indien beschikbaar\, tweefactor-authenticatie op accounts en apparaten om apparaten verder te beveiligen. Dit is vooral belangrijk voor personeel met toegang tot gevoelige informatie. \nTips voor het aanmaken van wachtwoorden\n• Wachtwoorden moeten uit ten minste 12 tekens bestaan\, met minimaal twee of drie verschillende soorten tekens op willekeurige plaatsen. Vermijd hoofdletters aan het begin en cijfers of symbolen aan het eind. Hoewel deze vereisten lastig lijken\, kunnen ze heel effectief zijn en kan de rompslomp worden verminderd door gebruik te maken een wachtwoordmanager.\n• Vermijd het gebruik van persoonlijke informatie bij het maken van een wachtwoord\, zoals geboortedata of de namen van personen\, huisdieren of sportteams.\n• Maak een wachtwoordzin: Maak een zin en gebruik de eerste letter of de eerste twee letters van elk woord als je wachtwoord en combineer dit met andere tekens. \nLinks:\nGadget Guide: World Password Day

DESCRIPTION:Dag van de Arbeid:\nDe Dag van de Arbeid / International Workers’ Day (in België ook Feest van de Arbeid genoemd) is een feestdag van de socialistische\, communistische en anarchistische arbeidersbeweging. \nDe dag vindt in Nederland\, België\, Curacao en Suriname elk jaar op 1 mei plaats. Andere landen wijken soms af van deze datum. In Europa is 1 mei in bijna alle landen een officiële feestdag\, op een paar landen na waaronder Nederland. Aan de 1 meiviering als viering van de arbeidersbeweging ligt de invoering van de achturige werkdag ten grondslag. De eis om slechts acht uur per dag te werken werd in de 15e en 16e eeuw veelvuldig onder de Engelse ambachtslieden gehoord. Bij het eerste congres van de Tweede Internationale in 1889 werd besloten om op 1 mei 1890 een internationale strijddag voor de achturige werkdag te organiseren. Dit plan was bedacht door de Amerikaanse vakbond American Federation of Labour (AFL). De vakbond AFL organiseerde eerder op 1 mei een nationale actiedag\, waarbij een sector staakte terwijl andere sectoren de stakingskas aanvulden om de stakers door te betalen tijdens de staking. \nOp 1 mei 1890 werd de eerste internationale Dag van de Arbeid gevierd met grote demonstraties voor de achturige werkdag in verschillende landen\, zoals in Frankrijk\, Oostenrijk-Hongarije\, Italië\, Spanje\, België\, Nederland\, Denemarken\, Noorwegen\, Zweden en de Verenigde Staten. De Britten organiseerden op de eerste zondag van mei een grote bijeenkomst. In sommige Italiaanse\, Spaanse en Franse steden kwam het tot gevechten tegen de politie. Alleen in de Verenigde Staten had de staking direct succes\, waar de timmerlieden in sommige deelstaten de achturige werkdag verkregen\, terwijl in sommige andere vakgebieden een negenurige werkdag werd ingevoerd. Op het congres van de Tweede Internationale van 1891 werd besloten om van de Dag van de Arbeid een jaarlijkse traditie te maken. Op het congres van 1891 probeerden de Duitse marxisten en de Britten om de Internationale Dag van de Arbeid te verplaatsen naar de eerste zondag van mei\, maar deze resolutie kreeg geen meerderheid. De Fransen waren tegen de verplaatsing naar zondag\, omdat ze dit zagen als een overgave. Dit komt door het bloedbad in de Franse stad Fourmies\, waarbij soldaten op de ongewapende demonstrerende menigte schoten en daarbij tien mensen vermoordden. DESCRIPTION:Jazz is een op improvisatie gebaseerde muziekstijl die beïnvloed is door West-Afrikaanse ritmes en ontstaan is in New Orleans uit een kruisbestuiving van ragtime en blues\, folk\, negrospirituals en Franse marsmuziek. \nOorspronkelijk betekende het woord jazz een “zeer energieke dans”. Jazz werd in de beginjaren door het grote publiek niet erg geaccepteerd\, vooral omdat deze soort muziek geassocieerd werd met losse zeden en een lage sociale status. Toen blanke en gemengde jazzorkesten vanaf de jaren 1930 deze muziek begonnen te spelen\, werd het ook voor blanken een aanvaarde vorm van entertainment. De swingperiode die toen begon betekende een hoogtepunt in de populariteit van jazz\, iets dat voornamelijk te danken was aan het feit dat jazz toen nog steeds uitsluitend dansmuziek was. Toen jazz vanaf de jaren vijftig evolueerde naar meer experimentele muzikale vormen\, en vanwege de opkomst van opwindende dansmuziek zoals rock-‘n-roll\, ging de verkoop van jazzplaten sterk achteruit. De jazz is echter gebleven\, en blijft zich vernieuwen. Dit artikel geeft een overzicht van de jazzgeschiedenis vanaf ragtime en hotjazz tot de fusionstijlen van de laatste decennia. In 2011 besloot UNESCO dat het tijd werd voor een Internationale Dag van de Jazz (International Jazz Day) om ook de jeugd te enthousiasmeren voor deze inspirerende muziekstroming. De drijvende krachten achter Internationale Jazz Day zijn Audrey Azoulay\, UNESCO-directeur-generaal\, en de legendarische jazzpianist en componist Herbie Hancock. Het doel van deze dag is de positieve boodschap van jazz te verspreiden. DESCRIPTION:Forbidden Stories investigated the detention and death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna\, which came on the heels of a reporting trip to Zaporizhzhia aimed at telling the stories of Ukrainian civilians unlawfully held by Russia. \nViktoriia Roshchyna was pronounced dead in Russian captivity in October 2024\, after being secretly held for months in Russian-occupied Ukraine and a Russian prison. In February 2025\, her body was repatriated. The body of Viktoriia Roshchyna was returned to Ukraine in February 2025; the body showed marks of torture and was returned without some organs. Forbidden Stories was able to consult with two of Viktoriia’s sources in Russian-held Ukraine\, and with her editor\, who confirmed she had traveled to Zaporizhzhia to investigate the torture of civilians in informal detention centers. SUMMARY:Stroomuitval op het Iberisch Schiereiland in 2025
DESCRIPTION:Op 28 april 2025 om 12:33 Midden-Europese Tijd CEST) vond er op het Iberisch Schiereiland een grote stroomstoring plaats. \nSpanje en Portugal werden getroffen\, de stroomvoorziening was urenlang geblokkeerd. Kleinschalige stroomstoringen van enkele seconden of minuten deden zich voor in aangrenzende gebieden van Andorra en delen van zuidwestelijk Frankrijk\, terwijl Gibraltar niet werd getroffen. Uit onderzoek bleek dat er problemen waren met het synchroon elektriciteitsnet van continentaal Europa. In de ochtend van 29 april 2025 was elektriciteitsvoorziening bijna geheel hersteld. De oorzaken van de stroomstoring werden meteen door de betrokken autoriteiten onderzocht\, waarbij met verschillende scenario’s rekening werd gehouden. De stroomstoring zou mogelijk te wijten zijn aan twee schommelingen in het elektriciteitsnet. De tweede storing zorgde ervoor dat het Spaanse elektriciteitsnet losgekoppeld raakte van het Europese net en het Iberische elektriciteitsnet uitviel. De zon scheen fel en om 12:30 produceerde Spanje 19\,5 GW zonne-energie. Daardoor produceerde Spanje meer elektriciteit: 32 GW dan er vraag was: 25 GW. \nSpanje voerde al zoveel uit naar Frankrijk: 0\,87 GW\, naar Marokko: 0\,78 GW en naar Portugal: 2\,6 GW als de hoogspanningskabels toelieten. De hydroelektrische pompcentrale nam ook zoveel af als ze kon: 3 GW. De prijs van elektriciteit werd door het onevenwicht van vraag en aanbod negatief: producenten van elektriciteit moesten geld betalen om elektriciteit op het stroomnet te zetten. Producenten schakelden daardoor in 5 seconden af van het stroomnet. Ook de kerncentrales van 3\,3 GW stopten. Omdat het Spaanse net niet langer synchroon liep\, schakelden Frankrijk en Marokko hun verbinding af. Daarna viel het stroomnet uit en omdat er geen synchroon net meer werkte\, konden de producenten van elektriciteit niet opnieuw aanschakelen op het synchroon net. Het Spaanse cybersecurityagentschap INCIBE deed onderzoek naar de mogelijkheid dat een cyberaanval het incident veroorzaakte\, maar een eerste analyse leverde geen bewijs daarvoor op. \nLinks:\nQuellendokument Breaking Lab Blackout Spanien \nStroomstoring eist zeker vijf mensenlevens in Spanje

DESCRIPTION:There are strong ethical\, economical and ecological reasons to modernise animal welfare policy\, Forward for Animals calls on the EU’s decision makers to support an ambitious and timely proposal for all species on farms in 2026. \nForward for Animals\, campaign from the Eurogroup for Animals network\, looks to expose the reality of animals on farms in the EU\, debunk myths from the industry\, and provide positive solutions for all stakeholders. On farms across Europe\, millions of animals are suffering from neglect and cruelty. The laws that protect them have not been thoroughly reviewed for over 40 years\, leaving them not fit for purpose\, and leaving sentient beings unprotected. The European Commission launched a much-needed revision of the animal welfare legislation five years ago\, with a promise to publicly present the proposal by 2024. Disappointingly\, the commitment to modernise the rules has continually been pushed back and delayed. Responding to increasing pressure to deliver the proposals\, Commissioner for Animal Welfare Oliver Várhelyi promised updated legislation for animals on farms by 2026. He committed to ensuring this legislation will modernise existing EU animal welfare standards\, and finally deliver on the promise to ban cages in farming. These laws must reflect citizen mandates\, the evidence and consensus of the scientific community\, and a firm and real commitment to end unnecessary animal suffering across the farming\, transport\, trade\, science\, and the environmental spaces. The campaign highlights that dignity\, kindness\, compassion and safety should be basic rights for all sentient beings in Europe. Therefore the EU should enshrine these principles in policy\, ensuring a progressive and fair society for humans and animals alike. Later in the year\, citizens will have the opportunity to participate and voice their support for the campaign. \nLinks:\nForward for Animals

DESCRIPTION:How Beijing abuses international institutions to terrorize its critics and extend its repressive tactics worldwide. \nChina Targets is a cross-border investigation led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that uncovers the sprawling scope and terrifying tactics of Beijing’s campaign to target regime critics living overseas. The 10-month investigation also reveals how the United Nations has become a staging ground for China’s transnational repression under Xi Jinping’s regime — and how Chinese authorities abuse Interpol red notices for political ends. ICIJ and 42 media partners interviewed 105 people in 23 countries who have been targeted by Chinese authorities in recent years for criticizing the government’s policies in public and privately. These individuals include Chinese and Hong Kong political dissidents as well as members of oppressed Uyghur and Tibetan minorities. Reporters took extraordinary security measures to protect the identities of the victims — many of whom asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation against them or their families — and to corroborate evidence of the state-sponsored harassment. ICIJ and its partners studied internal government documents\, examined secret audio and video recordings of police interrogations\, and pored over confidential U.N. and Interpol records\, court filings and intelligence reports to analyze Beijing’s authoritarian reach. Previously unseen Chinese government records spanning from 2001 to 2020\, including an internal police textbook and confidential security guidelines\, provided a unique glimpse into China’s playbook for cracking down on dissent. These closely guarded documents detailed — in the Chinese authorities’ own words — how domestic security officers should identify and control targets. The security guidelines established a template for repression that Chinese authorities use today on victims overseas\, ICIJ found. \nHalf of the 105 targets interviewed by ICIJ and its media partners stated that family members in China had been intimidated and interrogated by police or state security officials. Several said the intimidation came just hours after the targets had participated in protests or public events overseas. Sixty of the victims believed they had been followed or were being surveilled in their adopted country. Twenty-two victims said they received physical threats or were assaulted by civilians who openly supported the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Nineteen said they had received suspicious emails or experienced hacking attempts\, including by state actors. Previous ICIJ investigations exposed Beijing’s repressive policies against Muslim minorities inside China — part of the government’s sweeping program of mass surveillance and population control. China Targets documents how\, under Xi\, authorities have exported and expanded some of those repressive tactics\, in an effort to neutralize individuals perceived as threats to national security even though they are outside the country’s borders. The disarming effect of this state-sponsored intimidation is so powerful that many activists and ethnic minorities overseas have stopped their advocacy\, fearing their families back home could be harmed or imprisoned. \nICIJ discovered that not even Geneva — which the United Nations calls the “capital of peace” due to its role as the European headquarters of the U.N. and international organizations dedicated to diplomacy and human rights — was beyond the Chinese government’s frightening reach. Human rights activists and lawyers told ICIJ they had been surveilled\, harassed or intimidated by people they believe to be Chinese diplomats or government proxies\, including delegates from nongovernmental organizations. The U.N. grants thousands of NGOs “consultative status” — offering the groups certain privileges with the expectation that they act without government interference. But an ICIJ analysis of 106 such NGOs from mainland China\, Hong Kong\, Macau and Taiwan revealed that 59 are closely connected to the Chinese government or the Communist Party. Chinese authorities also abuse Interpol\, the world’s largest mechanism for police cooperation\, ICIJ and its partners found. Through Interpol\, China pursues dissidents\, powerful businesspeople and Uyghur rights advocates\, in apparent violation of Interpol’s rules. Many targets discovered they were wanted only after being stopped at a border control. China Targets reveals the scope of crackdowns on protesters during Xi Jinping’s foreign travels. During at least seven of Xi’s 31 overseas visits between 2019 and 2024\, local law enforcement infringed on dozens of protesters’ rights to shield the Chinese president from dissent\, detaining or arresting activists\, often for spurious reasons. In the cases ICIJ analyzed\, the campaign to silence opponents of the Communist Party appears to have involved local law enforcement in host countries\, revealing the extent to which China wields its political and economic power to pressure foreign governments and institutions to bend to its will. \nLinks:\nInside China’s machinery of repression — and how it crushes dissent around the world

De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nWaar ooit de Maas de zee instroomde\, vormt zich nu een klein waddengebied vol leven: de Slikken van Voorne. De badgasten die per tram vanuit Rotterdam kwamen\, zijn ingeruild voor moerasvogels op het Groene Strand. We zien veel bijzondere kevers\, pluizen uilenballen om verborgen muizen te ontdekken en volgen meeuwen die vlak langs de windmolens van de Maasvlakte scheren. As large herbivores\, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment into their territory\, and amongst the last to return to regrowth forest. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs inhabit jungles\, grasslands\, swamps and cloud forests\, yet each is threatened by human activity – be that mining\, palm oil plantations\, roads or settlements. They form an important part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers\, and form one of the oldest surviving genera in the animal kingdom. Despite their size\, history and ecological importance\, tapirs remain one of the least recognised species of animals. In comparison with other animals\, tapirs feature little in the collective consciousness and are frequently misidentified by zoo visitors. \nEven in their home ranges\, tapirs receive little attention\, with exotic species featuring more prominently in zoos\, children’s books and the media. The plight of tapirs is symbolic for the wider threat to their habitats specifically\, and the world’s ecology in general. The decline of tapir populations is indicative of the general health of their ranges; their disappearance from their home ranges often marks a point of ‘no return’ for the natural environment. The destruction of forests into small\, isolated enclaves and the encroachment of human activity into pristine forests affects all native species. However\, as the largest – yet perhaps the quietest – of animals in their ranges\, tapirs disappear without trace with countless other species. All tapirs are endangered species. In alle delen van Nederland geldt dit voor de meeste werknemers als vrije dag en wordt het gevierd met verschillende festiviteiten\, waaronder de vrijmarkten en het dragen van oranje kleding. Traditioneel brengt het staatshoofd op deze dag ook een ceremonieel bezoek aan een of meer gemeenten van het land. De avond voorafgaand aan Koningsdag worden er op verschillende plekken Koningsnacht (voorheen Koninginnenacht) georganiseerd. In Den Haag heet deze nacht KoningsNach (zonder t\, voorheen KoninginneNach en sinds 2011 LIVE I LIVE) en in Rotterdam wordt deze nacht de Nacht van Oranje genoemd (gevierd in Ahoy). In Apeldoorn en omstreken staat deze nacht bekend als Prinsennacht en wordt juist de nacht ná Koningsdag Koningsnacht genoemd. Aan de vooravond van Koningsdag worden de koninklijke onderscheidingen uitgereikt (ook wel de “Lintjesregen” genoemd). Op de laatste vrijdag voor Koningsdag vinden sinds 2013 de Koningsspelen plaats. De Wadden zijn echter meer dan de idylle van de rosse grutto’s\, zeehonden en wadlopen. Toerisme\, visserij en industrie verstoren het ecologische systeem\, wat leidt tot verlies van biodiversiteit\, maar ook tot het verdwijnen van de culturele diversiteit van de Waddeneilanden. Menselijke ingrepen in het verleden\, zoals de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk\, hebben grote ecologische schade aangericht. De gaswinning heeft geleid tot verslibbing en verarming van het bodemleven. Tegenwoordig vormen windmolens en stroomkabels een grote bedreiging voor de Wadden. Hoe beschermen we de Wadden? Kunnen we de ecologie van de Wadden herstellen? DESCRIPTION:World Immunization Week is a global public health campaign to raise awareness and increase rates of immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases around the world\, it takes place each year during the last week of April (24th – 30th). \nImmunization can protect against 25 different infectious agents or diseases\, from infancy to old age\, including diphtheria\, measles\, pertussis\, polio\, tetanus and COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates active immunization currently averts 2 to 3 million deaths every year. However\, 22.6 million infants worldwide are still missing out on basic vaccines\, mostly in developing countries. Inadequate immunization coverage rates often result from limited resources\, competing health priorities\, poor management of health systems and inadequate surveillance. The goal of World Immunization Week is to raise public awareness of how immunization saves lives\, and support people everywhere to get the vaccinations needed against deadly diseases for themselves and their children. World Immunization Week sprung out of the efforts taking place across different countries and regions for a week-long immunization awareness commemoration. DESCRIPTION:Evidence of controversial Planet 9 uncovered in sky surveys taken 23 years apart\, if the object really is Planet Nine\, it would be larger than Neptune and exist 700 times further from the sun than Earth. \nPhan and Goto used sky surveys from two infrared space telescopes launched 23 years apart: the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS)\, a NASA-Netherlands-U.K. satellite launched in 1983; and AKARI\, a Japanese satellite launched in 2006. Because of Planet Nine’s long orbit\, the researchers hypothesized that the time gap between the two data sets would be enough to see the potential planet move incrementally across the night sky. From an initial catalog of about 2 million objects within the IRAS and AKARI data sets\, the researchers whittled down to pairs of dots of light whose spacing could be explained by a moving planet with a Planet Nine–like mass and distance. Then\, they removed known sources such as stars\, sources that didn’t move over time\, and sources with too much noise\, such as those near the bright galactic center. When 13 pairs remained\, they checked each by eye. Only one candidate pair survived the scrutiny.
