DESCRIPTION:The International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face\, it provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics\, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region. \nThe Tropics are a region of the Earth\, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation\, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature. An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator\, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator. The tropical region faces several challenges such as climate change\, deforestation\, logging\, urbanisation and demographic changes. Tropical nations have made significant progress but face a variety of challenges that demand focused attention across a range of development indicators and data in order to achieve sustainable development. \n\nBy 2050\, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.\nConsistent with the higher levels of poverty\, more people experience undernourishment in the Tropics than in the rest of the world.\nThe proportion of the urban population living in slum conditions is higher in the Tropics than in the rest of the World.\n\nThe inaugural State of the Tropics Report was launched on 29 June 2014\, as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions. The report offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region. Marking the anniversary of the report’s launch the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/267 in 2016\, which declared that 29 June of each year is to be observed as the International Day of the Tropics. The international Day of the Tropics was designated to raise awareness to the specific challenges faced by tropical areas\, the far-reaching implications of the issues affecting the world’s tropical zone and the need\, at all levels\, to raise awareness and to underline the important role that countries in the tropics will play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. \nLinks:\nDay of the Tropics

SUMMARY:Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Since October 2023\, Israel has been waging an extensive assault on all aspects of Palestinian existence in the West Bank. \nThis includes a broad\, systematic violation of human rights\, first among them the most basic right – to life. Lethal\, unbridled violence employed by the Israeli regime’s armed forces\, including the military and settler militias\, has led to an unprecedent increase in the killing of Palestinians\, and particularly the killing of children and teenagers by Israeli forces. Over the course of two years and eight months\, from 7 October 2023 to 7 June 2026\, Israeli forces killed 235 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. Five others were killed by settlers. In 2025 alone\, the year that is the focus of this investigation\, Israeli forces killed 54 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. The unprecedented scale of killing of Palestinian children and teenagers by Israeli forces is the result of a reckless open-fire policy\, expanded to be even more permissive than in the past\, that is currently being implemented in the West Bank. Those responsible do not try to hide this policy; rather\, they give it full systemic backing\, as reflected in the remarks of Central Command Chief Avi Bluth\, who publicly boasted that “we are killing like we haven’t killed since 1967.” Bluth’s claim that “96% of those killed were involved in terrorism” – an allegation exposed as a brazen lie by documentation of the circumstances of death in B’Tselem’s list of Palestinian fatalities – also reflects the Israeli system’s routine identification of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces as “terrorists” or “terror operatives”\, including civilians who were not members of an armed organization and posed no danger at the time they were killed. B’Tselem’s investigation ‘Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025‘ of these cases found that only two of the 54 Palestinian children and teenagers killed in the West Bank in 2025 were armed with firearms at the time they were shot. This identification creates\, de facto\, systemic impunity for killing. The Israeli system does not stop at justifying these killings after the fact. It also refrains almost entirely from holding the perpetrators accountable. According to data from the human rights organization Yesh Din\, since the start of the war in October 2023\, no indictments are known to have been filed in cases involving killings in the West Bank. Yet the immunity guaranteed in advance and the absence of any real demand for accountability after these crimes are committed are not confined to the legal sphere. They are also reflected in “public impunity” that stems from the Israeli public’s indifference to the killing of Palestinian children. In this context\, the sharp rise in the killing of children in the West Bank by Israeli forces cannot be separated from the more than 21\,000 Palestinian children that Israel has killed as part of its genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The fact that even this inconceivable number has not led to public demands for a change in the policy of killing shows how far the dehumanization of Palestinians has gone in Israeli eyes. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nNet over de grens in het Duitse Zwillbrocker Venn leeft een flamingokolonie van zo’n 80 vogels groot. Natuurfotograaf Erik Ottema volgt de kolonie al een jaar of tien en is er bijna dagelijks te vinden. In 2022 besloot Militair Jesse zich in Oekraïne in te zetten voor de vrede en vrijheid. In mei 2024 kwam hij daar om. Zijn laatste wens was om met zijn nalatenschap een stuk landbouwgrond te kopen en dat weer te laten verwilderen tot natuur. Veel jonge trekvogels leren de route van hun ouders\, maar hoe zit dat bij kleine zangvogels? Nieuw onderzoek naar de bonte vliegenvanger laat zien dat zowel genen als de omgeving waarin een vogel opgroeit bepalen waar hij uiteindelijk overwintert. DESCRIPTION:Researchers from Sweden\, Denmark\, the United States\, the Netherlands\, Ireland and the United Kingdom collaborated to assess to what extent human-induced climate change altered the likelihood and intensity of the extreme heat in Western Europe; the analysis ‘Fossil fuel emissions have rapidly worsened European heatwaves in just a few decades‘ focuses on the 3 hottest days and nights over the most affected area\, and additional analysis of the 19 capitals of the affected countries. \nJust weeks after a severe heatwave that broke all-time May records\, Europe is experiencing another major heatwave that is breaking June and annual records. This is particularly remarkable given that June is not historically the hottest month in Western Europe. Across France\, Germany\, Italy\, Spain\, and southern England\, temperatures are reaching 5–12°C above seasonal averages\, driven by a persistent high-pressure system. This pattern has transported hot air from North Africa into the region while also bringing clear skies and strong sunshine\, which have further intensified the heat. Heatwaves pose a serious threat to human health and have profound impacts on ecosystems. During the summer of 2022\, more than 60\,000 people across Europe died as a result of extreme heat. Even in the following summer\, which was significantly cooler\, over 47\,000 heat-related deaths were recorded (Gallo et al.\, 2024). Last year\, the first heatwave in Europe\, also hitting at the end of June\, cost an estimated 2\,300 people their lives in only 12 European cities (Grantham Institute\, 2025). In addition to the direct impact on mortality\, extreme heat affects ecosystems\, infrastructure services and daily life. The high temperatures are pushing cooling demand to its highest level in at least 45 years while significantly increasing wildfire risk\, particularly in Spain and France (Straits Times\, 2026). France has been among the hardest-hit countries\, already reporting at least 40 fatalities\, widespread school closures\, cancelled outdoor events\, and major rail disruptions as extreme heat leads to thermal expansion of tracks and disruption to overhead power lines (Guardian\, 2026). Dry conditions are intensifying\, with soil moisture approaching record seasonal lows and emergency medical calls rising by 20% (Joubioux\, 2026; Peseckyte\, 2026a; Reuters\, 2026; Straits Times\, 2026). In the UK\, East Surrey Hospital declared a critical incident due to surging demand\, restricting services to life-threatening emergencies only (Peseckyte\, 2026b). Italy has experienced heat-related deaths\, increased emergency-room admissions\, and power outages linked to soaring air-conditioning use\, while healthcare and transport systems in Belgium and the Netherlands have faced growing strain and service disruptions. In Belgium\, wildlife rescue centres have also reported a sharp rise in heat-stressed animals\, particularly young birds (Reuters\, 2026). Meanwhile\, Spain is confronting heightened drought and water-stress conditions as reservoir levels come under increasing pressure. The heatwave is also placing stress on European energy systems\, with concerns over reduced output from French nuclear power plants cooled by the Rhône and Garonne rivers. DESCRIPTION:By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987\, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. \nSupported each year by individuals\, communities\, and various organizations all over the world\, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. Global drug use and the number of drugs on the market have been increasing in the past decades. The century-long dominance of heroin in illicit global opioid markets is increasingly being challenged by changes in the illegal supply of opioids. Production\, seizures and use of cocaine continue to rise\, while low costs of manufacture and reduced risks of detection of synthetic drugs are contributing to their increase on illicit drug markets. Drug trafficking groups are seeking out technological innovation to target new audiences and ensure that drugs increasingly reach their users and help boost their billion-dollar businesses. Illicit drug markets have always been adapting\, and organized crime has always been looking to exploit gaps in governance and regulation. In response to these challenges\, this year’s campaign will showcase how the international community\, local and national governments\, civil society and the public is working together on innovative responses to reduce demand for and supply of illicit drugs and thus mitigate threats. Every year\, UNODC issues the World Drug Report\, full of key statistics and factual data obtained through official sources\, a science-based approach and research. UNODC continues to provide facts and practical solutions to address the current world drug problem and remains committed to attaining health for all. DESCRIPTION:Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being.\n\nDespite the absolute prohibition of torture under international law\, torture persist in all regions of the world. Concerns about protecting national security and borders are increasingly used to allow torture and other forms of cruel\, degrading and inhuman treatment. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments\, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances. This prohibition forms part of customary international law\, which means that it is binding on every member of the international community\, regardless of whether a State has ratified international treaties in which torture is expressly prohibited. The systematic or widespread practice of torture constitutes a crime against humanity. DESCRIPTION:Het Handvest van de Verenigde Naties (Charter of the United Nations) is het oprichtingsverdrag van de Verenigde Naties en werd op 26 juni 1945 in San Francisco ondertekend door 50 van de 51 oorspronkelijke lidstaten van de VN. Polen\, het andere oorspronkelijke lid\, was niet vertegenwoordigd op de conferentie\, maar tekende twee maanden later. \nHet Handvest werd van kracht op 24 oktober 1945\, toen de vijf permanente leden van de Veiligheidsraad – China\, de Sovjet-Unie\, Frankrijk\, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten van Amerika – en een meerderheid van de overige 46 lidstaten het verdrag hadden geratificeerd. Op basis van art. 103 VN-Handvest gaan de bepalingen uit het Handvest boven de verplichtingen die lidstaten hebben op basis van andere verdragen. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:De aardbevingen Yaracuy 2026 waren twee krachtige bevingen die op 24 juni 2026 vlak na elkaar plaatsvonden in Yaracuy\, een deelstaat van Venezuela\, de bevingen hadden een kracht van 7\,2 en 7\,5 op de schaal van Richter en er volgden vele naschokken. \nIn de hoofdstad Caracas zijn meerdere gebouwen ingestort. De Amerikaanse geologische dienst USGS zei direct te vrezen voor veel slachtoffers. Interim-president Rodríguez riep de noodtoestand uit. De aardbevingen werden gevoeld tot op Curaçao\, maar er zou volgens de berichten geen kans zijn op een tsunami. Het Nederlandse reddingsteam USAR.NL vertrekt vrijdag 26 juni naar het rampgebied. Naast de honderden doden en vele gewonden\, wordt het aantal vermiste personen geschat op 49.500 (26-06-2026). Caracas werd in 1967 ook getroffen door een zware aardbeving (type IX)\, toen met een kracht van 6\,6 op de magnitudeschaal. DESCRIPTION:Elk jaar op 25 juni wordt tijdens Wereld Vitiligo Dag (World Vitiligo Day) aandacht gevraagd voor vitiligo\, wereldwijd staan er mensen stil bij de huidaandoening die voorkomt bij 1% van de mensen. \nDoor het delen van kennis en het ophalen van donaties\, wordt er gestreefd naar meer bewustwording en een verbetering in de kwaliteit van leven voor mensen met vitiligo. Vitiligo (soms ook leukoderma genoemd) is een huidziekte\, waarbij bepaalde pigmentafwijkingen optreden vanwege verstoringen in de productie van het huidpigment melanine. De patiënt ontwikkelt meer of minder uitgebreide\, scherp begrensde maar onregelmatig gevormde plekken waar het huidpigment verdwenen is\, vaak symmetrisch verdeeld op het lichaam of de ledematen. Vooral bij mensen met een donkere huid geeft dit een zeer opvallend en (door de patiënt zelf ervaren als) ontsierend effect en de ongepigmenteerde huid kan in de zon ook makkelijk verbranden. Langs de randen van de plekken vormen zich soms donkere plekken. Dit komt vooral veel voor in de schaamstreek\, bij mannen op het scrotum. De donkere plekken veranderen soms van structuur en plaats\, en blijven vaak niet stabiel maar blijven meestal wel beperkt tot een bepaald gedeelte van de huid en breiden zich vaak niet verder uit. Vitiligo kan overal op de huid van het menselijk lichaam voorkomen en wordt vaak als een probleem ervaren als het in bijvoorbeeld de gelaatsstreek ontstaat of als er op het lichaam meerdere plekken ontstaan. Vitiligo over een groot deel van het gehele lichaam komt minder voor. Mensen met deze pigmentafwijking mogen niet te lang blootgesteld worden aan zonlicht aangezien zij minder beschermd zijn tegen UV-straling. Vitiligo gaat soms gepaard met andere auto-immuunziekten\, zoals hypothyreoïdie\, lichen sclerosus\, myasthenia gravis en de ziekte van Addison. DESCRIPTION:Woensdag 24 juni 2026 gaan OV-medewerkers door het heel Nederland staken. \nAls we volgens de vakbonden en WijReizenSamen nú niet van ons laten horen\, breekt het Nederlandse kabinet-Jette het sociale vangnet af dat je nú nog beschermt bij werkloosheid of arbeidsongeschiktheid. Ook wil het kabinet de pensioenleeftijd verhogen en bezuinigen op onze  zorg. Dat raakt iedere burger in Nederland onnodig hard. Terwijl winstgevende bedrijven en de allerrijksten niet meebetalen. Het kabinet kán eerlijkere keuzes maken maar doet dat niet. Dit is voor werkende mensen onacceptabel. Als het kabinet het ultimatum van de bonden negeert en de plannen niet voor woensdag 24 juni 2026 definitief van tafel haalt\, dan zal het openbaar vervoer in heel Nederland die dag tot 08:00 stilliggen en pas vanaf 08:00 weer op gang komen. De vakbonden hebben het kabinet gevraagd de afbraakplannen van tafel te halen. Dat heeft het kabinet niet gedaan. Er is alleen toegezegd de afspraken over de pensioenleeftijd niet nu al te breken. Als dit wanbeleid 24 juni niet definitief van tafel is\, komen er die dag landelijke acties. DESCRIPTION:EcoJust publiceert ‘Terug in het vizier: Wolvenstroperij in Nederland’\, het eerste systematische onderzoek naar de aard\, omvang en drijfveren van wolvenvervolging in Nederland. \nDe bevindingen zijn ernstig: minstens 41 wolven zijn gestroopt\, bijna 15% van alle genetisch bevestigde wolven is spoorloos verdwenen\, en achter deze verdwijningen gaat een wijdvertakt netwerk van georganiseerde stroperij schuil dat opereert met vrijwel totale straffeloosheid. Sinds de terugkeer van de wolf naar Nederland in 2018 zijn naar verluidt minstens 41 wolven gestroopt\, waarvan het merendeel op de Veluwe (provincie Gelderland) en in Noordoost-Nederland. Uit de monitoringdata blijkt bovendien dat 38 van de 259 in Nederland bekende wolven (1 op de 7) zijn verdwenen op een manier die niet te verklaren is door natuurlijke sterfte of emigratie. Maar de werkelijke omvang gaat verder dan de cijfers alleen. Het onderzoek — gebaseerd op interviews met 61 getuigen\, monitoring van sociale media en openbronnenonderzoek\, en analyse van tien jaar monitoringdata — toont aan dat de vervolging van wolven in Nederland geen randverschijnsel is. Het is een wijdvertakt netwerk van georganiseerde stroperij dat opereert met vrijwel totale straffeloosheid\, met de stilzwijgende steun van aanzienlijke delen van de plattelandsgemeenschap. Wolven worden meestal doodgeschoten\, maar ook opzettelijk achtervolgd en aangereden\, en mogelijk vergiftigd. Karkassen worden begraven\, verbrand in vuurtonnen en gedumpt in mestkelders — technieken die specifiek zijn gekozen om bewijs te vernietigen. Uit getuigenverklaringen en socialemediaonderzoek komt naar voren dat de daders voornamelijk afkomstig zijn uit kringen van veehouders en jagers\, verbonden door hechte sociale netwerken en gefaciliteerd door socialemediaplatforms die real-time wolvenzichtmeldingen verspreiden. Een van de centrale bevindingen van het rapport is dat wolvenstroperij in Nederland niet door één enkele oorzaak wordt gedreven en dus ook niet door één enkele maatregel kan worden opgelost. Het onderzoek identificeert vijf drijfveren die elkaar onderling versterken: \nDe eerste drijfveer zijn reële grieven in plattelandsgemeenschappen — (hobby-)veehouders die schade lijden\, angst voor de veiligheid van kinderen en huisdieren\, vergoedingsregelingen die per provincie verschillen\, en het gevoel dat de overheid deze grieven niet serieus neemt. Tegelijkertijd ziet een aanzienlijk deel van de veehouders bewust af van beschermingsmaatregelen — wat veeaanvallen in de hand werkt en het conflict verder aanwakkert. \nDe tweede drijfveer is de rol van sociale media\, die grieven en angsten versterken en zo leiden tot radicalisering en groeiende wolvenhaat — en die tegelijkertijd de praktische coördinatie van vervolging faciliteren. \nDe derde drijfveer is politieke normalisering: politici die de wolf consequent framen als een indringer die niet thuishoort in het Nederlandse cultuurlandschap en die gedocumenteerde wolvenvervolging door de vingers zien — en deze daarmee stilzwijgend legitimeren. \nDe vierde drijfveer betreft het falen van bestuur en handhaving. Versnipperd bestuur en de geleidelijke afbraak van de natuurhandhavingscapaciteit in het buitengebied hebben omstandigheden geschapen waarin stroperij nauwelijks enig risico op ontdekking of vervolging met zich meebrengt. \nDe vijfde drijfveer zijn sociaal-culturele identiteiten — verankerd in jachtcultuur\, de hechte solidariteit van plattelandsgemeenschappen\, en in sommige gemeenschappen in de Biblebelt een theologische overtuiging dat de mens boven de natuur staat — die maken dat het verzet tegen de wolf diepgeworteld is en dat beleid er nauwelijks vat op heeft. \nHet rapport besluit met aanbevelingen gericht aan de rijksoverheid\, provincies\, gemeenten\, handhavingsinstanties en het Openbaar Ministerie\, jagers- en boerenorganisaties\, media en journalisten\, socialemediaplatforms en ngo’s. DESCRIPTION:World Whistleblowers Day was created to raise global public awareness in combating corruption\, the day is about the important role of whistleblowers in combating fraud\, abuse and corruption. \nWhistleblowing (also whistle-blowing or whistle blowing) is the activity of a person\, often an employee\, revealing information about activity within a private or public organization that is deemed illegal\, immoral\, illicit\, unsafe\, unethical or fraudulent. Whistleblowers can use a variety of internal or external channels to communicate information or allegations. Over 83% of whistleblowers report internally to a supervisor\, human resources\, compliance\, or a neutral third party within the company\, hoping that the company will address and correct the issues. A whistleblower can also bring allegations to light by communicating with external entities\, such as the media\, government\, or law enforcement. Some countries legislate as to what constitutes a protected disclosure\, and the permissible methods of presenting a disclosure. Whistleblowing can occur in the private sector or the public sector. Whistleblowers often face retaliation for their disclosure\, including termination of employment. \nSeveral other actions may also be considered retaliatory\, including an unreasonable increase in workloads\, reduction of hours\, preventing task completion\, mobbing or bullying. Laws in many countries attempt to provide protection for whistleblowers and regulate whistleblowing activities.
