Het Nederlandse strafrecht biedt immers ruimte voor maatwerk\, waarbij de persoonlijke situatie van de verdachte mag worden meegewogen. Maar door een optelsom van factoren\, is er volgens onderzoekers van het Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek- en Datacentrum (WODC) sprake van een structureel ongunstigere positie voor deze groep mensen. Dit blijkt uit twee vandaag verschenen WODC-rapporten: Vinkjes in het strafrecht? en Scherp op selectiviteit. Eerder verscheen het rapport Van verdenking tot vrijheidsstraf\, dat gaat over etnische selectiviteit. DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nAalscholvers jagen door het water langs de Oostvaardersdijk in Flevoland. We volgen de dijk langs moerassen\, dammen en haventjes\, met goudvinken\, zeearenden en brasems. In de natte kwelgraslanden zoeken steltlopers als de grutto naar eten\, tussen planten die je aan zee zou verwachten. De boommarter in de lepelaarkolonie op de strekdammen van Lelystad zorgde dit jaar voor veel commotie in Beleef de Lente. We ontdekken dat er toch wat jongen groot zijn geworden. En vanuit de kano zien we wat het droogleggen van een moeras in de Oostvaardersplassen heeft opgeleverd; hopelijk vangen we een glimp op van de baardmannen. \nLinks:\nVroege Vogels

DESCRIPTION:World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14\, it is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14\, 1868\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. \nWBDD was organised for the first time in 2005\, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation\, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products\, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary\, life-saving gifts of blood. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients who suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life\, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \nThe 2026 campaign\, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”\, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation. It reminds us that each donation is more than a medical act: it is a powerful expression of solidarity\, compassion and collective responsibility. Inspired by the idea that the whole of humanity can be reflected in a single drop\, the campaign highlights how every donor helps form a lifeline that connects and protects us all. While advances in science\, testing and blood safety systems have made transfusion safer than ever\, safe blood remains dependent on people willing to donate regularly and voluntarily. DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. Nu is er Het grote autismefestival\, een middag en avond bestemd voor mensen die eigenlijk niet van festivals houden. Met gesprekken over en verhalen vanuit het autistisch spectrum en alles eromheen. Het festival zal bestaan uit twee delen: een middagprogramma en een avondprogramma. DESCRIPTION:Oerol is een jaarlijks terugkerend tiendaags cultureel festival in juni\, dat wordt gehouden op het Nederlandse eiland Terschelling. \nDit festival werd in 1981 opgericht door Joop Mulder\, destijds eigenaar van café De Stoep in Midsland. De naam van het Festival is afgeleid van het woord “overal” in Terschellings. Oerol wordt geprogrammeerd aan het begin van de zomer\, als het eiland volop in het groen staat. Heel Terschelling vormt de locatie voor het Festival\, waarbij intensief wordt opgetrokken met Staatsbosbeheer\, een van de partners. Op Oerol is ruimte voor het experiment en jonge makers\, maar er is ook plek voor gevestigde groepen die die in première gaan op Oerol. Ieder jaar komen bezoekers naar de Nederlandse en internationale theatervoorstellingen\, muziek\, Expedities\, Talks en Pop-up Performance tijdens deze tijdelijke maatschappij op een eiland. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2026 Theme: Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults. The 2026 World Day comes at a decisive moment. The 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour\, held in Marrakech\, reaffirmed the urgent need to accelerate action and translate commitments into concrete results. The Marrakech Global Framework for Action against Child Labour provides a concrete roadmap and indicators for tackling child labour through integrated responses that address root causes and protect every child’s rights. Under the slogan “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults”\, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour campaign calls for reinforced action on the policies that prevent child labour and withdrawn children from it:  quality education\, universal social protection\, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults\, stronger laws and enforcement\, better data and monitoring systems\, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains. This action is urgently needed. DESCRIPTION:Het Migratie- en asielpact is een reeks EU-regels over migratie die op 12 juni 2026 van kracht zullen worden. \nHet zal de lidstaten verplichten de kosten en inspanningen voor de opvang van migranten meer te verdelen en hervormt daarnaast de procedures voor asiel en grensbeveiliging van de Europese Unie\, naast andere bepalingen. Het Migratiepact bestaat uit 1 richtlijn en 9 verordeningen. In het Migratiepact staan onder andere de volgende afspraken: \n\n\n\nEU-landen moeten de identiteit van asielzoekers sneller vaststellen met een zogeheten screening.\nEU-landen die asielzoekers op hun grondgebied aanhouden die illegaal de buitengrenzen zijn overgegaan\, moeten die binnen 3 dagen alsnog screenen.\nEU-landen moeten gegevens van asielzoekers en migranten zonder de juiste papieren in een Europese databank invoeren. Daarmee kan de EU beter in de gaten houden in welke landen iemand asiel heeft aangevraagd.\nAsielprocedures moeten in de EU-lidstaten meer op elkaar lijken.\nVerplichte grensprocedures voor specifieke groepen asielzoekers. Bijvoorbeeld asielzoekers die weinig kans maken op asiel (uit landen waarvan de EU-landen 20% of minder van de asielverzoeken goedkeuren). Of asielzoekers die een gevaar zijn voor de openbare orde of nationale veiligheid. Die moeten aan de EU-grens al horen of ze mogen blijven of niet. Als ze geen asiel krijgen\, start direct de terugkeer naar hun thuisland. De verplichte grensprocedure geldt niet voor alleenstaande minderjarige vluchtelingen (behalve als ze een gevaar vormen voor de openbare orde of nationale veiligheid).\nEU-landen moeten zorgen voor genoeg capaciteit voor deze grensprocedures voor asielzoekers. Nederland moet 211 asielzoekers deze procedure gelijktijdig kunnen laten doorlopen.\nEU-landen mogen in crisissituaties afwijken van de regels. Bijvoorbeeld als plotseling grote aantallen vluchtelingen naar de EU komen. Of als een EU-land kampt met een natuurramp of epidemie. Zij moeten de Europese commissie om toestemming vragen en aantonen dat er sprake is van een crisis of overmacht.\nAsielzoekers moeten tijdens hun procedure samenwerken met de autoriteiten. Ze moeten bijvoorbeeld de juiste gegevens verstrekken over hun identiteit en nationaliteit\, de gehele asielprocedure beschikbaar zijn voor vragen of gehoor en in het land blijven waar ze asiel hebben gevraagd. Werken ze niet mee? Dan kan een land de asielaanvraag tijdelijk stoppen of afwijzen.\nKinderen die asiel aanvragen moeten binnen 2 maanden na hun asielaanvraag naar school (was 3 maanden).\nMinderjarigen zonder ouders of begeleiders\, gehandicapten\, ouderen\, slachtoffers van foltering en asielzoekers met trauma’s moeten snel ondersteuning krijgen. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Het FIFAwereldkampioenschap voetbal mannen in 2026 is de 23ste editie van een internationaal voetbaltoernooi tussen de nationale mannenteams van landen die aangesloten zijn bij de FIFA\, zal gehouden worden in Canada\, Mexico en de Verenigde Staten van 11 juni tot en met 19 juli 2026. \nDit is de eerste editie waarbij 48 landen actief zullen zijn op het eindtoernooi. Die landen worden verdeeld over twaalf groepen met vier landen waarvan dan de nummer 1\, 2 en acht nummers 3 door zullen gaan naar de zestiende finales. Het is het eerste wereldkampioenschap dat in drie landen georganiseerd wordt. Het eindtoernooi duurt 40 dagen en in totaal worden er 104 wedstrijden gespeeld. Een uitdaging vormen de grote afstanden tussen de verschillende speelsteden. DESCRIPTION:TUI Group krijgt Gouden Bullshit Award van Floortje Dessing om tickets voor dolfijnenshows. \nTUI Group krijgt de Gouden Bullshit Award vanwege de kaartverkoop voor attracties met dolfijnen en orka’s in gevangenschap. Floortje Dessing overhandigde de prijs op het Nederlandse TUI-hoofdkantoor in Rijswijk. TUI Group verkoopt wereldwijd zo’n 400 uitjes met dolfijnen\, orka’s en beloega’s in gevangenschap. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om dolfinaria\, shows en attracties als zwem- en fotosessies. Met de Gouden Bullshit Award vestigen we aandacht op bedrijven die misstappen begaan op het gebied van dierenwelzijn. In 2025 won Rabobank de prijs (toen nog Gouden Koeienvlaai genoemd) vanwege het uitkleden van het dierenwelzijnsbeleid. TUI verkoopt onder meer kaartjes voor het omstreden SeaWorld en Loro Parque op Tenerife\, die hevig worden bekritiseerd vanwege shows met orka’s en dolfijnen en slechte leefomstandigheden voor de dieren. Een van de dieren die in Loro Parque gevangen zit is de ‘Nederlandse’ orka Morgan. Deze orka werd 16 jaar geleden in de Waddenzee gevonden en zit sindsdien in Loro Parque\, waar ze twee kalfjes kreeg. Opvallend\, aangezien TUI’s beleid het fokken met dieren voor commerciële doeleinden verbiedt. Het eerste kalfje is op tweejarige leeftijd overleden. Floortje Dessing spreekt zich al langer uit tegen de kaartverkoop van TUI. In 2025 schreef ze samen met BN’ers als Jennifer Hofman en Anita Witzier een open brief naar TUI met de oproep om kaartverkoop voor attracties met walvisachtigen in gevangenschap te stoppen. Floortje was donderdag 11 juni 2026 te gast bij RTL Tonight om over de uitreiking te praten. Onder meer Booking.com\, Expedia Group\, Corendon\, Sunweb Group en Tripadvisor bieden geen dolfijnenvermaak meer aan. Reisbrancheorganisatie ANVR vindt attracties met shows met walvisachtigen in gevangenschap ‘onacceptabel’. World Animal Protection Nederland roept TUI Group op om te stoppen met de kaartverkoop voor vermaak met walvisachtigen. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Play\, observed on 11 June\, creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. \nIt signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. Beyond mere recreation\, it is a universal language spoken by people of all ages\, transcending national\, cultural\, and socio-economic boundaries. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride. It also fosters resilience\, creativity\, and innovation in individuals. For children in particular\, play helps build relationships and improves control\, overcome trauma\, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. 2026 Theme: ‘Protect Play\, Protect Childhood‘. Throughout June\, UNICEF will also be promoting expert tips and guidance for parents on everything from the science of play to fun activities for all the family. DESCRIPTION:UNHCR’s Global Trends report presents key statistical trends and the latest official statistics on refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people worldwide. \nThe Global Trends report\, published in June 2026\, provides key statistical trends on forced displacement. It includes the latest official statistics on refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people\, as well as the number of refugees who have returned home. At the end of 2025\, there were 41.6 million refugees globally\, including refugees under UNHCR’s mandate\, people in a refugee-like situation\, other people in need of international protection and Palestine refugees under UNRWA’s mandate\, as well as 9 million asylum-seekers pending a decision on their asylum claims. In addition\, there were 68.7 million people displaced within their own country due to conflict or violence. The global number of refugees fell during 2025 with a decrease of 3 per cent compared to the end of 2024. This change reflects a sharp increase in the returns of refugees\, mostly to Afghanistan\, Syria and Sudan. The number of IDPs also decreased due to the returns of IDPs primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Sudan and Syria. DESCRIPTION:Op 11 juni 2026 zal het nieuw geschreven Politiek Programma van de Jongerenorganisatie Vrijheid en Democratie (JOVD) gepresenteerd worden. \nDe JOVD is een Nederlandse liberale politieke jongerenorganisatie. Sinds de inwerkingtreding van de Wet subsidiëring politieke partijen is de JOVD gelieerd aan de VVD. In politiek opzicht is de JOVD volledig onafhankelijk\, wat betekent dat de vereniging zelf haar standpunten kan bepalen. In het te publiceren Politiek Programma blijkt onder meer dat de jongerenafdeling van de VVD wil dat de Nederlandse verzorgingsstaat in 2050 ‘overzichtelijk en doelgericht’ is en dat de focus komt te liggen op de ‘zelfredzaamheid’ van iedere Nederlander. Als het aan de VVD-jongeren ligt\, gaat de AOW helemáál van tafel. Al vinden ze wel dat werklozen – die dus géén geld hebben om zelf hun pensioenpot aan te vullen – aanspraak moeten kunnen blijven maken op ‘een overheidsvergoeding’ in hun individuele pensioenspaarpot. \nLinks:\nVVD-jongeren komen met opvallend plan: AOW moet verdwijnen en ook hypotheekrenteaftrek op de schop

DESCRIPTION:In de documentaire “De duistere kant van Forum voor Democratie” (PowNed\, NPO Start) vertellen oud-FVDleden hoe complotdenken\, uitsluiting en ideeën over ‘blanke superioriteit’ binnen de partij steeds normaler worden. \nEerst als grap\, dan openlijk. Wie zich uitspreekt\, krijgt te horen: als je niet loyaal bent\, moet je maar weggaan. De rechtsstaat moet beter beschermd worden tegen politieke partijen die haar actief ondermijnen. Daarom vraagt deze petitie vraagt de Tweede Kamer om een onafhankelijk parlementair onderzoek\, een aanscherping van de partijenwet\, en een meldpunt waar oud-leden en journalisten veilig signalen kunnen delen. DESCRIPTION:Vlees: natuurlijk en traditioneel\, én… ultrabewerkt? \nHet rapport ‘The EU Meat Industry : Illusions of Tradition and Naturalness‘ (Engelstalig) gaat over een gevoelig thema\, het roept altijd weerstand op als Foodwatch het over de vleesindustrie heeft. Foodwatch vertelt je vaak hoe grote voedselbedrijven de publieke opinie beïnvloeden en welke marketingtactieken ze daarvoor gebruiken. Maar op de een of andere manier denken veel mensen dat het bij de vleesindustrie anders is. Dat zij geen grote lobbyclubs en marketingbudgetten hebben om hun producten zo populair mogelijk te maken. Alsof zij de enige speler in de voedselindustrie zijn die nog wél voor natuurlijke\, traditionele producten zorgt. Foodwatch heeft gekeken naar hoe de vleesindustrie lobbyt en het maatschappelijke debat kleurt. Dat doen ze met succes\, ze spreken namelijk veel mensen die overtuigd zijn van hetzelfde beeld dat de industrie al jaren schetst: vlees is traditioneel\, ambachtelijk\, natuurlijk. Door dit dieper te onderzoeken blijkt: dat beeld klopt grotendeels niet. De boerderij uit de reclamefolder bestaat bijna niet meer. Ja\, er is de biologische\, grasgevoerde koe die vrij in de wei loopt. Maar dat is veruit de minderheid: biologisch vlees heeft in Nederland een marktaandeel van slechts 2-3% van al het vlees dat wordt verkocht. De overgrote meerderheid van het vlees dat we eten komt uit een heel andere realiteit. Cijfers die tot nadenken stemmen: \n\n90% van de Europese vleeskuikens leeft binnen\, in intensieve stallen;\n99% van de Europese varkens ziet nooit daglicht;\nMeer dan 80% van de Europese melk komt van intensieve melkveehouderijen;\nTussen 2005 en 2020 verdween 37% van de Europese boerenbedrijven\, 5\,3 miljoen stuks\, vooral familiebedrijven.\n\nHet gaat dus niet (meer) over de idyllische boerderijen van de reclame. Landbouw in de Europese Unie (EU\, Europa) is met name industriële productie op grote schaal. Tachtig procent van de Europese landbouwsubsidies gaat naar slechts 20% van alle bedrijven: de grootste en meest intensieve. De hardwerkende boer met een minder grote boerderij profiteert hier juist niet van\, die wordt zelfs uit de markt geprijsd. Foodwatch voert campagne over en waarschuwen voor de risico’s van ultrabewerkt voedsel (Ultra Processed Foods\, UPF)\, daar horen jullie regelmatig over. Wat veel mensen niet weten: worst\, spek en ham vormen in Europa de tweede grootste categorie ultrabewerkte voeding. En dan wordt vlees vaak door de eigen sector weggezet als ‘natuurlijk’\, terwijl vegetarische alternatieven als ‘kunstmatig’ en ‘fabrieksmatig’ worden bestempeld. De tegenstelling tussen ‘natuurlijk vlees’ vs. ‘ultrabewerkte vegetarische alternatieven’ klopt dus niet. Er bestaat ultrabewerkt vlees én ultrabewerkte vegetarische alternatieven\, net zoals er lichtbewerkt vlees én lichtbewerkte vegetarische alternatieven bestaan. In Europa is de discussie over strengere regels voor UPF in volle gang. Maar het risico is dat de vleessector hier buiten schot blijft. Woorden als ’traditioneel’\, ‘ambachtelijk’ en ‘natuurlijk’ zijn in de EU niet wettelijk beschermd. Producenten zetten ze groot voorop de verpakking\, terwijl de toevoegingen (vaak allesbehalve natuurlijk) achterop in mini-lettertjes staan. Misleiding pur sang. En die toevoegingen zijn best schrikbarend: de EU staat namelijk meer dan 1.400 toevoegingen aan diervoer toe\, tegenover ’slechts’ 338 in voeding voor menselijke consumptie. Via het vlees dat je eet\, krijg je dus soms stoffen binnen die in voeding voor mensen helemaal niet zijn toegestaan. Het UPF-debat is te belangrijk om de vleesindustrie te laten wegkomen met een rol die haar niet toekomt: die van het louter gezonde\, natuurlijke alternatief.
