DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting. DESCRIPTION:Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension\, bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace\, stability and development. \nCultural diversity is a driving force of development\, not only with respect to economic growth\, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual\, emotional\, moral and spiritual life. This is captured in the seven culture conventions\, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. At the same time\, acceptance and recognition of cultural diversity – in particular through innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) – are conducive to dialogue among civilizations and cultures\, respect and mutual understanding. DESCRIPTION:Verantwoordingsdag (populair: woensdag gehaktdag of kortweg gehaktdag) is in Nederland de dag waarop de Rijksoverheid en de ministeries hun jaarverslagen presenteren aan de Tweede Kamer\, op dezelfde dag publiceert de Algemene Rekenkamer haar verslag “Staat van de rijksverantwoording” van de controles op die jaarverslagen\, verantwoordingsdag is jaarlijks op de derde woensdag in mei. \nVerantwoordingsdag of de Dag van de verantwoording bestaat sinds 2000. Voor die tijd werden het financieel jaarverslag en de departementale jaarverslagen – toen nog “Financiële Verantwoording” geheten – pas in september aan de Tweede Kamer gezonden. Op aandringen van de Tweede Kamer is dit tijdstip vervroegd\, omdat de Kamerleden het in het najaar te druk hebben met het voorbereiden van de begrotingsbesprekingen om nog veel tijd aan het financiële verslag te kunnen besteden. In de jaarverslagen wordt niet alleen gerapporteerd over hoeveel geld er is uitgegeven en waaraan. Ook wordt besproken welke concrete doelen men voor ogen had en hoeveel daarvan er uiteindelijk in het afgelopen jaar is bereikt. \n\nBovendien komt de Minister van Financiën sinds 2000 persoonlijk het verslag aan de Tweede Kamer brengen. Daarbij wordt een speciaal koffertje gebruikt\, net als het koffertje waarin de Miljoenennota zit op Prinsjesdag\, de derde dinsdag in september. Driven largely by massive fires\, that’s more than any other year in at least the last two decades. According to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD lab and available on WRI’s Global Forest Watch platform\, tropical primary forest disappeared at a rate of 18 football (soccer) fields per minute in 2024 — nearly double that of 2023. These are some of the most important forest ecosystems\, critical for livelihoods\, carbon storage\, water provision\, biodiversity and more. DESCRIPTION:De KNAW organiseert samen met De Balie een debatavond over de bedreiging van de academische vrijheid en hoe die in de VS onder steeds meer druk komt te staan. \n‘Vrouw’\, ‘trauma’\, ‘slachtoffer’: het zijn enkele van de woorden die onderzoekers niet meer mogen gebruiken als ze aanspraak willen maken op Amerikaans overheidsgeld. Voor welke dilemma’s komen Nederlandse wetenschappers te staan nu de Verenigde Staten de aanval openen op (wereldwijde) academische vrijheid? Met één theatrale zwaai van zijn pen opende Donald Trump zijn aanval op de academische vrijheid. Complete onderzoeksgebieden zijn taboe verklaard. Deze ontwikkeling vindt niet geïsoleerd plaats. De wetenschap is internationaal nauw verweven in allerlei samenwerkingsverbanden. Op vrijwel alle onderzoeksgebieden liep de Amerikaanse wetenschap voorop\, qua prestaties en qua budgetten\, met name in de medische wetenschappen. Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. DESCRIPTION:World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20\, on this day Anton Janša\, the pioneer of beekeeping\, was born in 1734. \nThe purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017. Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants\, known for their role in pollination and\, in the case of the best-known bee species\, the western honey bee\, for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea and are presently considered a clade\, called Anthophila. There are over 16\,000 known species of bees in seven recognized biological families. They are found on every continent except Antarctica\, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Bees and other pollinators\, such as butterflies\, bats and hummingbirds\, are increasingly under threat from human activities. Pollinators allow many plants\, including many food crops\, to reproduce. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security\, but they are key to conserving biodiversity – a cornerstone of the Sustainable Development Goals. They also serve as sentinels for emergent environmental risks\, signaling the health of local ecosystems. Invasive insects\, pesticides\, land-use change and monocropping practices may reduce available nutrients and pose threats to bee colonies. Portilla een bijzondere openluchttentoonstelling met als startpunt het Beursplein. Elephant Parade staat wereldwijd bekend als de grootste openluchtkunstexpositie van deze handbeschilderde olifantenbeelden – in het formaat van een baby-olifant – en deed in 2009 al eens eerder de hoofdstad aan. Amsterdam kan zich opnieuw scharen in het rijtje van (inter)nationale steden\, zoals Londen\, Milaan\, Rio de Janeiro\, Las Vegas en Dubai\, om het gastheerschap van dit evenement te verzorgen. Lokale en internationale kunstenaars creëren unieke ontwerpen om aandacht te vragen voor het behoud van olifanten. De expositie in Amsterdam belooft een visueel spektakel te worden dat kunst\, cultuur en natuurbescherming samenbrengt op een iconische locatie. Het Beursplein wordt gedurende een maand omgetoverd tot een levendig kunstlandschap waar bezoekers kunnen genieten van de diverse en expressieve kunstwerken. Elk beeld vertelt een eigen verhaal en draagt bij aan de bewustwording rondom het behoud van de olifant en zijn leefgebied. Een bijzondere toevoeging aan deze expositie is de vreemde ‘Eend in de bijt’. Voor Elephant Parade is iedereen gelijk en dit kunstwerk draagt bij aan de boodschap van inclusiviteit en verbondenheid die de expositie wil uitdragen. Vol trots wordt dan ook voor de tweede keer samengewerkt met de Nederlandse Stichting Het Vergeten Kind en de Painted Duck Parade als co-host van deze Parade. SUMMARY:#EHF2025 European Humanitarian Forum 2025
DESCRIPTION:The fourth edition of the European Humanitarian Forum (EHF 2025) will be co-organised by the European Commission and the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. \nAs in previous years\, the Forum will bring together EU Member States\, global humanitarian stakeholders\, NGOs\, policymakers\, and experts. The fourth edition of the EHF takes place amid escalating global crises\, a shrinking humanitarian space\, and a widening gap between urgent needs and available resources. With humanitarian aid becoming increasingly politicised and access to those in need more restricted\, over 305 million people worldwide currently require urgent assistance and protection due to conflict\, climate emergencies\, food insecurity\, and economic instability (UNOCHA). Despite the continued generosity of donors\, the humanitarian funding gap remains significant. As of January 2025\, only 46% of the $50 billion appeal for 2024 has been fulfilled (UN FTS). The programme will feature panel discussions\, workshops\, and Humanitarian Talks\, providing participants with a dynamic platform to engage on thematic and geographic priorities. \nLinks:\nEuropean Humanitarian Forum
