DESCRIPTION:The aim of Emergency Medicine day is to unite the world population and decision makers to think and talk about emergency medicine and emergency medical care. \nIt is important to build awareness about the need for well developed\, well prepared and well organised emergency medical systems everywhere in the world to increase survival and reduce disability after any kind of urgent or emergent medical situation. Where the specialty in emergency medicine is not yet developed\, where emergency medical systems are not well structured\, where competences are not standardized and certified\, where resources for emergency medicine are insufficient\, there should be a strong voice to ask and claim for a change\, for a better life. The mission is to explain to the people that emergency medical care is better performed with competent professionals; doctors\, specialists in emergency medicine\, nurses trained in emergency and acute care\, paramedics\, technicians\, support personnel competent and working in organized structures and systems dedicated to emergency medical care. To show to people and governments that this organization makes a difference in terms of morbidity\, mortality\, and cost-effectiveness. The 27th of May is the day when Emergency Medicine in Europe took its beginning. In London a group of visionary people signed the founding act of the European Society for Emergency Medicine. The aim was to build up a system model to grant to every citizen in Europe a professional\, competent and above all timely response to any life\, organ or limb threatening acute condition. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nIn het voorjaar staan de spindotterbloem en het zomerklokje prachtig in bloei. Deze bijzondere planten groeien nog maar op een paar plekken bij riviergetijde. De Riviereilanden in de Nieuwe Maas overstromen zo’n twee keer per dag\, iets wat bijna nergens meer langs onze rivieren gebeurt. Tussen de scheepsvaart en industrie onder de rook van Rotterdam zijn een paar plekjes bewaard gebleven. In de oude griendbossen\, voor de wilgenteelt\, zingen zanglijsters en bouwt de bever een burcht. In nieuw gegraven slenken zoekt de watersnip naar eten en groeien jonge vissen op. Het meest bijzondere hier is ook bijna het kleinst: Vroege Vogels vindt hier onverwacht het getijdeslakje. DESCRIPTION:Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963\, it is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world. The organization was replaced by the African Union on 9 July 2002\, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May. \nOn 25 May 1963\, representatives of thirty African nations met in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia\, hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie. By then more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence\, mostly from imperial European states. At this meeting\, the Organization of African Unity was founded\, with the initial aim to encourage the decolonization of Angola\, Mozambique\, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. The organization pledged to support the work conducted by freedom fighters\, and remove military access to colonial nations. A charter was set out which sought to improve the living standards across member states. Selassie exclaimed\, “May this convention of union last 1\,000 years.” The charter was signed by all attendees on 26 May\, with the exception of Morocco. At that meeting\, Africa Freedom Day was renamed Africa Liberation Day. In 2002\, the OAU was replaced by the African Union. However\, the renamed celebration of Africa Day continues to be celebrated on 25 May in respect to the formation of the OAU. Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world\, mostly on 25 May (although in some cases these periods of celebrations can be stretched out over a period of days or weeks). DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly\, by its resolution 60/119 of 8 December 2005\, requested the annual observance of the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories. \nIn the UN Charter\, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as a Territory “whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government”. In 1946\, several UN Member States identified a number of Territories under their administration that were not self-governing and placed them on a UN list. Countries administering Non-Self-Governing Territories are called administering Powers. De gasten worden van de regio naar en door Amsterdam vervoerd in diverse hulpverlenersvoertuigen met ingeschakelde sirenes en zwaailichten. Tijdens het KinderBeestFeest staat een grote groep enthousiaste vrijwilligers klaar om de gasten een kosteloze\, zorgeloze en vooral onvergetelijke avond te bezorgen. In 2025 wordt er weer een KinderBeestFeest georganiseerd\, maar wel al in mei\, namelijk op vrijdag 23 mei. Dat is iets eerder dan normaal\, omdat vanaf juni veel politie en andere hulpdiensten druk zijn met grote en uitdagende evenementen als Sail Amsterdam en de NAVO-top. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nDe twee minuten stilte-estafette in alle zeven Nederlandse universitaire ziekenhuizen (UMC’s) is geen demonstratie\, maar een actie om op te komen voor duizenden slachtoffers in Gaza die medische zorg nodig hebben. \nAanleiding voor de actie is de verslechterende medische situatie in de Gazastrook door aanhoudende aanvallen van het Israëlische leger. Negentien van de 36 ziekenhuizen in Gaza zijn nog (deels) operationeel\, meldde de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) donderdag. Zeven daarvan kampen met zulke ernstige tekorten aan veilige voorzieningen\, materiaal en zorgverleners dat ze alleen basale spoedeisende hulp kunnen bieden. DESCRIPTION:Ieder jaar in mei wordt de verspreiding van vleermuizen onderzocht tijdens de Vleermuistuintelling. \nVleermuizen leven het liefst in buurten met veel groen\, water en een donkere nacht. De aanwezigheid van vleermuizen is dus een goede graadmeter voor hoe duurzaam en natuurrijk een buurt is. Ga tijdens de tellingsdagen buiten zitten vanaf zonsondergang totdat het donker is. Zoek daarvoor een plek met vrij zicht op een stuk hemel zodat je de vleermuizen kunt zien vliegen. Liefst ook met zicht op een boom of wat struiken\, want daar vliegen vleermuizen graag dichtbij. Noteer hoeveel vleermuizen je tegelijk hebt gezien en van welke soort. Geef de aantallen door via de website van Tuintelling. Er leven bijna twintig vleermuissoorten in Nederland. Zo’n vijf daarvan zou je vanuit je tuin kunnen waarnemen: de gewone dwergvleermuis\, de laatvlieger\, de gewone grootoorvleermuis\, de watervleermuis en de rosse vleermuis. DESCRIPTION:Since 2016\, the 23rd of May marks the annual EU Day Against Impunity for Genocide\, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes. \nUnder the auspices of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in cooperation with the European Commission\, the Genocide Prosecution Network and Eurojust\, this initiative aims to raise awareness of the most heinous crimes of genocide\, crimes against humanity and war crimes. At the same time\, the EU Day Against Impunity is intended to promote national investigations and prosecutions\, to formally recognise the common efforts of the EU Member States and the European Union in enforcing international criminal law\, to address the position and participation of victims in criminal proceedings for these crimes\, and to reinvigorate Europe-wide commitment to the continuing fight against impunity for these crimes. The first EU Day Against Impunity took place on 23 May 2016. Since then\, the event has been attended by practitioners\, representatives of international tribunals\, Member States\, the European Institutions and international organisations\, non-governmental organisations\, academics\, lawyers\, journalists\, etc. The initiative represents the implementation of one of the measures decided in the Strategy of the Genocide Prosecution Network to combat impunity for the crime of genocide\, crimes against humanity and war crimes within the European Union and its Member States (Measure 7c). \nOn 22 May 2025\, Eurojust\, the Genocide Prosecution Network\, European Commission and Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU jointly marked the 10th EU Day Against Impunity for genocide\, crimes against humanity\, and war crimes. The hybrid event gathered 175 representatives of judicial authorities\, civil society and the diplomatic community at Eurojust’s headquarters and online to discuss the protection of the independence and integrity of judicial authorities investigating and prosecuting core international crimes. International judicial authorities are increasingly confronted with challenges such as sanctions\, funding limitations\, and lack of cooperation. DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting.
