DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly commemorates 26 September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons\, this Day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority. \nIt provides an opportunity to educate the public – and their leaders – about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons\, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them. Achieving global nuclear disarmament is one of the oldest goals of the United Nations. It was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946\, which established the Atomic Energy Commission\, which was dissolved in 1952\, with a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction. The United Nations has been at the forefront of many major diplomatic efforts to advance nuclear disarmament since. In 1959\, the General Assembly endorsed the objective of general and complete disarmament. In 1978\, the first Special Session of the General Assembly Devoted to Disarmament further recognized that nuclear disarmament should be the priority objective in the field of disarmament. Every United Nations Secretary-General has actively promoted this goal. \nThe General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013\, in its resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament held on 26 September 2013\, in New York. This was the latest in a series of efforts by the General Assembly to raise public awareness and to seek deeper engagement on nuclear disarmament matters. In 2009\, the General Assembly had declared 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests (resolution 64/35). In resolution 68/32\, the General Assembly called for the “urgent commencement of negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament of a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons to prohibit their possession\, development\, production\, acquisition\, testing\, stockpiling\, transfer and use or threat of use\, and to provide for their destruction.” \nIn 2014\, in its resolution 69/58\, the General Assembly further expressed its desire to commemorate the Day\, and requested the Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly to make all arrangements necessary to commemorate the International Day and promote it\, including by convening an annual meeting of the Assembly to provide a platform for the promotion of these activities. The General Assembly repeated these requests and call in subsequent years in resolutions  70/34\, 71/71\, 72/251\, 73/40\, 74/54\, 75/45\, 76/36\, 77/47 and 78/27. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014. Pursuant to the resolutions of the General Assembly\, Member States\, the United Nations system and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academia\, parliamentarians\, the mass media and individuals are encouraged to commemorate and promote the International Day through enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination. To observe the International Day\, the United Nations is supporting events both in New York and Geneva. United Nations Information Centres around the world are encouraged to raise awareness to the observance of International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. \nYet\, today nearly around 12\,100 nuclear weapons remain. Countries possessing such weapons have well-funded\, long-term plans to modernize their nuclear arsenals. More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that either have such weapons or are members of nuclear alliances. While the number of deployed nuclear weapons has appreciably declined since the height of the Cold War\, not one nuclear weapon has been physically destroyed pursuant to a treaty. In addition\, no nuclear disarmament negotiations are currently underway. Meanwhile\, the doctrine of nuclear deterrence persists as an element in the security policies of all possessor states and many of their allies. The international arms-control framework that contributed to international security since the Cold War\, acted as a brake on the use of nuclear weapons and advanced nuclear disarmament\, has come under increasing strain. Most recently\, on 2 August 2019\, the United States’ withdrawal spelled the end of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty\, through with the United States and the Russian Federation had previously committed to eliminating an entire class of nuclear missiles. \nFrustration has been growing amongst Member States regarding what is perceived as the slow pace of nuclear disarmament. This frustration has been put into sharper focus with growing concerns about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of even a single nuclear weapon\, let alone a regional or global nuclear war. Commemorating this Day at the United Nations is especially important\, given its universal membership and its long experience in grappling with nuclear disarmament issues. DESCRIPTION:The European Day of Languages is observed on 26 September\, as proclaimed by the Council of Europe on 6 December 2001\, at the end of the European Year of Languages (2001)\, which had been jointly organised by the Council of Europe and the European Union. \nIts aim is to encourage language learning across Europe. The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are to: \n\nAlert the public to the importance of language learning\, diversity and the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding\nPromote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe\nEncourage lifelong language learning in and out of school\n\nIn keeping with these rules\, people\, young and old\, are encouraged to take up a language or to take special pride in their existing language skills. Also\, those responsible for providing access to language learning are encouraged to make it easier for people to learn a range of languages\, and to support policy initiatives to promote languages. There is also an emphasis on learning a language other than English. On the occasion of the day\, a range of events are organised across Europe\, including those for children\, television and radio programmes\, language classes and conferences. The events are not organised by the Council of Europe or the European Union nor do they allocate special funding (i.e. apart from their existing language programmes) for the day. Member states and potential partners are given a free hand to organise activities. To coordinate the activities organised at the national level\, the Council of Europe asks participating countries to nominate “National Relay Persons” for the day. DESCRIPTION:The World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27\, 2023. September 27 was chosen as on that day in 1970\, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) were adopted. \nTourism is one of the world’s most important economic sectors. It employs one in every ten people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more. For some countries\, it can represent over 20 percent of their GDP. It allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other\, highlighting our common humanity. Tourism is an essential pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals\, especially goals 8\, 12\, and 14. It serves as a first entry point to the world of work\, especially for women\, youth\, migrant workers\, and rural populations in developing and least developed countries (LDCs). Women represent a majority of the tourism sector workforce\, while half of that workforce is under 25 years of age. Moreover\, in many parts of the world\, the protection of biodiversity and conservation rely heavily on the tourism sector and the revenue it generates. \nThe constant growth of the tourism sector during the last six decades reflects more progressive access to tourism thanks to the decline in the cost of transport and the world-wide growth of the middle classes. The recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, and the improved adoption of labor rights in many countries have also supported its development. These factors also serve as a backdrop for the resilience shown by tourism in recent years. The sector has experienced almost uninterrupted growth despite challenges such as the global economic crisis and natural disasters. \nThe many important contributions of tourism encouraged the UNWTO to institute World Tourism Day in a meeting that took place in Spain\, commencing the first celebration of the observance in the year 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970. Afterwards\, during its 70th session in 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (resolution A/RES/70/193)\, in which it encouraged support for sustainable tourism as a means of promoting and accelerating sustainable development\, especially poverty eradication. \nLinks:\nWorld Tourism Day

Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nNog vijf titels waren in de race voor de prijs voor het beste Natuurboekenprijs van 2026! Tijdens de extra feestelijke uitzending werd de winnaar bekendgemaakt vanaf Landgoed Oostbroek in de Bilt waar aansluitend het Vroege Vogels Festival plaatst vond. Alicja Gescinska is filosoof. In haar werk richt ze zich op thema’s als vrijheid\, waarheid en menselijkheid. Met essays\, romans\, poëzie en theater heeft ze zich ontwikkeld tot een invloedrijke stem. Haar werk werd meermaals bekroond\, waaronder met de Socratesbeker 2026 voor Vrouwen in duistere tijden. Het is een van de favoriete frases van pacifisten wereldwijd: vechten voor vrede is even absurd als neuken voor maagdelijkheid. Wie geen oorlog wil\, moet alleen maar de wapens weigeren. Maar is het wel zo simpel? En is pacifisme altijd een deugd en nobel? Is geweldloosheid tegenover gewelddadigheid soms geen vrijgeleide voor het uitleven van het kwaad? Al meer dan vier jaar is het Europese continent getekend en gelittekend door een bloederige oorlog. Die oorlog confronteert ons met de donkere diepte in de mens; een afgrond waarin de wreedaardigheid van onze soort zich openbaart. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nSinds kort fladdert de zeldzame zilveren maan weer in het Wisselse Veen\, nabij Epe. Het natuurgebied aan de rand van de Veluwe laat zien hoe spectaculair de natuur kan herstellen. Akkers zijn nu kleurrijke velden met bijzondere flora zoals draadgentiaan\, kleine zonnedauw en moeraswolfsklauw. Boven de plassen vliegen witgatjes en zwaluwen en zelfs de schuwe waterral laat zich onverwacht zien. Tussen de brandnetels ontdekken we schorpioenvliegen en hoog in de bomen wachten kuikens van de wespendief op hun eerste vlucht. DESCRIPTION:The International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September\, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. The decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. Representatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. FOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. \nConferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. In some countries\, the Right to Know Day elaborated in Right to Know Weeks. Music has been composed especially for the occasion. In November 2015\, UNESCO declared September 28th as the “International Day for Universal Access to Information” and was first held on 28 September 2016.The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union me mber states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. DESCRIPTION:Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is a United Nations-sanctioned designated awareness day observed annually on 29 September with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of food loss and waste\, this day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, whereas\, the day’s events are jointly led by these two organizations. \nThe main aim of the day is to raise awareness to the importance of food loss and waste related problems and their possible solutions at all levels\, and also to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3\, which targets to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030\, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains. It has been calculated that an average of 74 kg of food per person is wasted each year worldwide. According to some estimates\, 1.4 billion hectares of agricultural land are used annually to produce food that will eventually be discarded; 14% of produced food (worth approximately 400 billion dollars) is lost between harvest and sale\, while 17% of global agrifood production is wasted. In addition\, food loss and waste related problems contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases leading environmental detriment as well. \nThe seventh observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) is approaching\, now is the time for everyone to get involved and take action! The 2026 theme will focus on the “Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste”. DESCRIPTION:Weekend van de Wetenschap is sinds 2012 een Nederlands wetenschapsevenement\, jaarlijks organiseert het NEMO wetenschap en technologiemuseum met steun van het ministerie van Onderwijs\, Cultuur en Wetenschap dit weekend. \nDoel van het evenement is om een breed publiek kennis te laten maken met wetenschap en techniek. Veel (onderzoeks)instellingen\, bedrijven\, universiteiten\, science centra en sterrenwachten organiseren dan publieksactiviteiten zoals rondleidingen\, workshops\, debatten en lezingen. Wetenschap is overal en altijd om ons heen\, soms zonder dat we het doorhebben. Het is de basis van onze technologie\, de geneeskunde en onze kennis over de wereld om ons heen. Maar hoeveel weten we eigenlijk over de wetenschap achter ons dagelijks leven? Tijdens Weekend van de Wetenschap kunnen kinderen op zoek naar antwoorden op deze en vele andere vragen\, en worden ze meegenomen op een fascinerende reis door de wetenschap.
