DESCRIPTION:De afdeling Onderzoek en Statistiek van de gemeente Amsterdam publiceerde in juni 2026 de Amsterdamse Burgermonitor 2025\, dit is een representatief onderzoek over wat bewoners vinden van de toestand van de stad en net als bij voorgaande Burgermonitors zijn criminaliteit\, afval en wonen volgens Amsterdammers de belangrijkste problemen. \nEen groot deel van de inwoners van de gemeente Amsterdam (Amsterdammers) voelt zich thuis in de stad (67 procent). Maar dit aandeel neemt wel af. In 2010 voelde nog 82 procent zich thuis. Deze afname zien we onder alle groepen Amsterdammers\, maar wel sterker onder groepen die in omvang zijn toegenomen in de afgelopen 25 jaar. Dan gaat het om mensen die korter dan drie jaar in Amsterdam wonen en mensen met een migratieachtergrond. De Burgermonitor biedt een overzicht van het gedrag en de opvattingen van Amsterdammers op het gebied van de politiek\, de gemeentelijke dienstverlening\, het gebruik van media en het samenleven in de stad. Sinds 1999 verspreidt O&S een enquête onder een representatieve groep Amsterdammers. In totaal hebben dit jaar 2.437 Amsterdammers van 25 jaar en ouder de hele vragenlijst ingevuld. Hoewel een groot deel van de Amsterdammers zich thuis voelt\, vindt 54 procent dat het meer de verkeerde kant op gaat met de stad dan de goede kant. In 2025 waren de belangrijkste punten van zorg voor inwoners veiligheid en criminaliteit\, afval in de stad en wonen. DESCRIPTION:Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) publiceert het onderzoek ‘Hinder en slaapverstoring van vliegtuiggeluid in 2024. Blootstelling-responsrelaties voor burgerluchthavens en militaire luchthavens in Nederland‘ over de relatie tussen vliegtuiggeluid en ernstige hinder of slaapverstoring bij 14 luchthavens in Nederland\, dit heet een blootstelling-responsrelatie (BR-relatie). \nVoor de meeste luchthavens is er een duidelijke relatie te zien. Dat betekent dat de kans op ernstige hinder of slaapverstoring toeneemt naarmate het geluidniveau toeneemt. Wel kan de relatie per luchthaven verschillen en in de loop van de tijd veranderen. Het RIVM adviseert om voor beleid en regelgeving altijd actuele en voor de luchthaven specifieke BR-relaties te gebruiken. Zo kan de gezondheid van bewoners het best beschermd worden tegen vliegtuiggeluid. Op dit moment wordt in beleid en regelgeving nog vaak de BR-relatie uit 2002 toegepast om de effecten op hinder en slaapverstoring in te schatten. Deze is niet alleen oud\, maar ook afgeleid op basis van alleen gegevens voor Schiphol. Het onderzoek uit 2020 om BR-relaties opnieuw vast te stellen\, viel midden in de coronapandemie. Er was toen minder vliegverkeer en mensen brachten meer tijd thuis door. Dit kan effect hebben gehad op de uitkomsten. Daarom heeft het RIVM op verzoek van het ministerie van IenW en Defensie de relatie tussen vliegtuiggeluid en hinder vastgesteld op basis van nieuwe gegevens uit 2024. Het RIVM berekende de BR-relatie voor de luchthavens van Schiphol\, Rotterdam\, Lelystad\, Eelde\, Eindhoven en Maastricht en acht militaire vliegvelden. \nLinks:\nNieuwe blootstelling-responsrelaties voor luchthavens in Nederland \nRIVM: overheid gebruikt achterhaalde cijfers over overlast Schiphol\, meer mensen met ernstige slaapverstoring dan eerder gemeld

DESCRIPTION:Iets meer dan de helft van de immigranten kwam uit de Europese Unie (EU) en European Free Trade Association (EFTA)\, vooral het aantal asiel- en kennismigranten van buiten de EU daalde\, over de afgelopen 27 jaar was gemiddeld 9 procent van de immigranten een asielmigrant. \nIn 2025 immigreerden 309 duizend mensen naar Nederland\, 8 duizend minder dan in 2024. Zowel de immigratie uit EU-landen als die van buiten de EU nam af\, het aantal immigranten met de Nederlandse nationaliteit bleef gelijk. Vooral het aantal asiel- en kennismigranten van buiten de EU daalde. Dat meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) op basis van recente cijfers. Bijna de helft van de immigranten kwam in 2025 uit landen buiten de EU en EFTA. Bijna 37 procent komt uit een EU- of EFTA-land en 14 procent heeft de Nederlandse nationaliteit. DESCRIPTION:The International Seabed Authority (ISA; French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is a Kingston\, Jamaica-based intergovernmental body of 171 Member States plus the European Union. \nIt was established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its 1994 Agreement on Implementation. The ISA’s dual mission is to authorize and control the development of mineral related operations in the international seabed\, which is considered the “common heritage of all mankind“\, and to protect the ecosystem of the seabed\, ocean floor and subsoil in “The Area” beyond national jurisdiction. The ISA is responsible for safeguarding the international deep sea\, defined as waters below 200 meters (656 feet)\, where photosynthesis is hampered by inadequate light. Governing approximately half of the total area of the world’s oceans\, the ISA oversees activities that might threaten biological diversity and harm the marine environment. Since its inception in 1994\, the ISA has approved over two dozen ocean floor mining exploration contracts in the Atlantic\, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The majority of these contracts are for exploration in the Clarion–Clipperton zone between Hawaii and Mexico\, where polymetallic nodules contain copper\, cobalt and other minerals essential for powering electric batteries. To date\, the Authority has not authorized any commercial mining contracts as it continues to deliberate over regulations amid global calls for a moratorium on deep sea mining. Scientists and environmentalists warn that such mining could wreak havoc on the ocean\, a crucial carbon sink and home to rare and diverse species. Funded by UNCLOS members and mining contractors\, the Authority operates as an autonomous international organization with its own Assembly\, Council\, and Secretariat. DESCRIPTION:Op 29 juni wordt jaarlijks tijdens Wereld Sclerodermie Dag / World Scleroderma Day aandacht gevraagd voor (behandeling van en onderzoek naar) Sclerodermie / systemische sclerose (Engels: (systemic) scleroderma)\, een chronische auto-immuunziekte die wordt gerekend tot de reumatische aandoeningen. \nDe naam ‘sclerodermie’ betekent ‘harde huid’. De ziekte veroorzaakt een verharding (sclerosering) van bindweefsel die zich doorgaans voordoet in de huid en vaak gepaard gaat met problemen van de haarvaten. Het kan ook interne organen aantasten\, waaronder de maag\, slokdarm\, darm\, longen en nieren. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen twee verschijningsvormen: morfea en systemische sclerodermie. Hoewel morfea en systemische sclerose gelijksoortige huidafwijkingen hebben\, is er verder weinig overlap. Morfea gaat niet in systemische sclerose over. Symptomen die pleiten voor systemische sclerose zijn het fenomeen van Raynaud\, symmetrische huidafwijkingen en positieve ANA. Systemische sclerose is relatief zeldzaam: slechts twee tot zestien nieuwe gevallen per miljoen inwoners. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face\, it provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics\, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region. \nThe Tropics are a region of the Earth\, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation\, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature. An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator\, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator. The tropical region faces several challenges such as climate change\, deforestation\, logging\, urbanisation and demographic changes. Tropical nations have made significant progress but face a variety of challenges that demand focused attention across a range of development indicators and data in order to achieve sustainable development. \n\nBy 2050\, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.\nConsistent with the higher levels of poverty\, more people experience undernourishment in the Tropics than in the rest of the world.\nThe proportion of the urban population living in slum conditions is higher in the Tropics than in the rest of the World.\n\nThe inaugural State of the Tropics Report was launched on 29 June 2014\, as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions. The report offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region. DESCRIPTION:Since October 2023\, Israel has been waging an extensive assault on all aspects of Palestinian existence in the West Bank. \nThis includes a broad\, systematic violation of human rights\, first among them the most basic right – to life. Lethal\, unbridled violence employed by the Israeli regime’s armed forces\, including the military and settler militias\, has led to an unprecedent increase in the killing of Palestinians\, and particularly the killing of children and teenagers by Israeli forces. Over the course of two years and eight months\, from 7 October 2023 to 7 June 2026\, Israeli forces killed 235 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. Five others were killed by settlers. In 2025 alone\, the year that is the focus of this investigation\, Israeli forces killed 54 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. The unprecedented scale of killing of Palestinian children and teenagers by Israeli forces is the result of a reckless open-fire policy\, expanded to be even more permissive than in the past\, that is currently being implemented in the West Bank. Those responsible do not try to hide this policy; rather\, they give it full systemic backing\, as reflected in the remarks of Central Command Chief Avi Bluth\, who publicly boasted that “we are killing like we haven’t killed since 1967.” Bluth’s claim that “96% of those killed were involved in terrorism” – an allegation exposed as a brazen lie by documentation of the circumstances of death in B’Tselem’s list of Palestinian fatalities – also reflects the Israeli system’s routine identification of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces as “terrorists” or “terror operatives”\, including civilians who were not members of an armed organization and posed no danger at the time they were killed. B’Tselem’s investigation ‘Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025‘ of these cases found that only two of the 54 Palestinian children and teenagers killed in the West Bank in 2025 were armed with firearms at the time they were shot. This identification creates\, de facto\, systemic impunity for killing. The Israeli system does not stop at justifying these killings after the fact. It also refrains almost entirely from holding the perpetrators accountable. According to data from the human rights organization Yesh Din\, since the start of the war in October 2023\, no indictments are known to have been filed in cases involving killings in the West Bank. Yet the immunity guaranteed in advance and the absence of any real demand for accountability after these crimes are committed are not confined to the legal sphere. They are also reflected in “public impunity” that stems from the Israeli public’s indifference to the killing of Palestinian children. In this context\, the sharp rise in the killing of children in the West Bank by Israeli forces cannot be separated from the more than 21\,000 Palestinian children that Israel has killed as part of its genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The fact that even this inconceivable number has not led to public demands for a change in the policy of killing shows how far the dehumanization of Palestinians has gone in Israeli eyes. Natuurfotograaf Erik Ottema volgt de kolonie al een jaar of tien en is er bijna dagelijks te vinden. In 2022 besloot Militair Jesse zich in Oekraïne in te zetten voor de vrede en vrijheid. DESCRIPTION:Researchers from Sweden\, Denmark\, the United States\, the Netherlands\, Ireland and the United Kingdom collaborated to assess to what extent human-induced climate change altered the likelihood and intensity of the extreme heat in Western Europe; the analysis ‘Fossil fuel emissions have rapidly worsened European heatwaves in just a few decades‘ focuses on the 3 hottest days and nights over the most affected area\, and additional analysis of the 19 capitals of the affected countries. \nJust weeks after a severe heatwave that broke all-time May records\, Europe is experiencing another major heatwave that is breaking June and annual records. This is particularly remarkable given that June is not historically the hottest month in Western Europe. Across France\, Germany\, Italy\, Spain\, and southern England\, temperatures are reaching 5–12°C above seasonal averages\, driven by a persistent high-pressure system. This pattern has transported hot air from North Africa into the region while also bringing clear skies and strong sunshine\, which have further intensified the heat. Heatwaves pose a serious threat to human health and have profound impacts on ecosystems. During the summer of 2022\, more than 60\,000 people across Europe died as a result of extreme heat. Even in the following summer\, which was significantly cooler\, over 47\,000 heat-related deaths were recorded (Gallo et al.\, 2024). Last year\, the first heatwave in Europe\, also hitting at the end of June\, cost an estimated 2\,300 people their lives in only 12 European cities (Grantham Institute\, 2025). In addition to the direct impact on mortality\, extreme heat affects ecosystems\, infrastructure services and daily life. The high temperatures are pushing cooling demand to its highest level in at least 45 years while significantly increasing wildfire risk\, particularly in Spain and France (Straits Times\, 2026). France has been among the hardest-hit countries\, already reporting at least 40 fatalities\, widespread school closures\, cancelled outdoor events\, and major rail disruptions as extreme heat leads to thermal expansion of tracks and disruption to overhead power lines (Guardian\, 2026). Dry conditions are intensifying\, with soil moisture approaching record seasonal lows and emergency medical calls rising by 20% (Joubioux\, 2026; Peseckyte\, 2026a; Reuters\, 2026; Straits Times\, 2026). In the UK\, East Surrey Hospital declared a critical incident due to surging demand\, restricting services to life-threatening emergencies only (Peseckyte\, 2026b). Italy has experienced heat-related deaths\, increased emergency-room admissions\, and power outages linked to soaring air-conditioning use\, while healthcare and transport systems in Belgium and the Netherlands have faced growing strain and service disruptions. In Belgium\, wildlife rescue centres have also reported a sharp rise in heat-stressed animals\, particularly young birds (Reuters\, 2026). Meanwhile\, Spain is confronting heightened drought and water-stress conditions as reservoir levels come under increasing pressure. The heatwave is also placing stress on European energy systems\, with concerns over reduced output from French nuclear power plants cooled by the Rhône and Garonne rivers. Production\, seizures and use of cocaine continue to rise\, while low costs of manufacture and reduced risks of detection of synthetic drugs are contributing to their increase on illicit drug markets. Drug trafficking groups are seeking out technological innovation to target new audiences and ensure that drugs increasingly reach their users and help boost their billion-dollar businesses. Illicit drug markets have always been adapting\, and organized crime has always been looking to exploit gaps in governance and regulation. In response to these challenges\, this year’s campaign will showcase how the international community\, local and national governments\, civil society and the public is working together on innovative responses to reduce demand for and supply of illicit drugs and thus mitigate threats. Concerns about protecting national security and borders are increasingly used to allow torture and other forms of cruel\, degrading and inhuman treatment. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments\, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances. This prohibition forms part of customary international law\, which means that it is binding on every member of the international community\, regardless of whether a State has ratified international treaties in which torture is expressly prohibited. The systematic or widespread practice of torture constitutes a crime against humanity. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. Een strategie voor duurzame vrede\, met garanties voor de mensenrechten en veiligheid van zowel Palestijnen als Israëliërs. \nLinks:\nAmbtenaren en de Grondwet

DESCRIPTION:De aardbevingen Yaracuy 2026 waren twee krachtige bevingen die op 24 juni 2026 vlak na elkaar plaatsvonden in Yaracuy\, een deelstaat van Venezuela\, de bevingen hadden een kracht van 7\,2 en 7\,5 op de schaal van Richter en er volgden vele naschokken. \nIn de hoofdstad Caracas zijn meerdere gebouwen ingestort. De Amerikaanse geologische dienst USGS zei direct te vrezen voor veel slachtoffers. Interim-president Rodríguez riep de noodtoestand uit. De aardbevingen werden gevoeld tot op Curaçao\, maar er zou volgens de berichten geen kans zijn op een tsunami. Het Nederlandse reddingsteam USAR.NL vertrekt vrijdag 26 juni naar het rampgebied. Naast de honderden doden en vele gewonden\, wordt het aantal vermiste personen geschat op 49.500 (26-06-2026). Caracas werd in 1967 ook getroffen door een zware aardbeving (type IX)\, toen met een kracht van 6\,6 op de magnitudeschaal.
