DESCRIPTION:The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory\, including East Jerusalem\, and Israel examines violations and crimes against and affecting Palestinian children\, including serious physical and psychological harm by the Israeli security forces since 7 October 2023 resulting in the death of at least 20\,179 and injury of 44\,143 children. \nThe paper ‘The essence of childhood has been destroyed: Israel’s deliberate targeting of Palestinian children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 7 October 2023‘ describes the deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian children\, including post-ceasefire since the October 2025 Gaza peace plan. The Commission also examines a sharp increase in violence perpetrated by members of Israeli settlers against Palestinian children in the West Bank\, including East Jerusalem. The Commission examines the use of torture\, inhumane and degrading treatment\, including sexual and gender-based violence\, against Palestinian children\, particularly during mass arrests and in detention. It analyses pattern of Israel’s targeting of critical infrastructure essential to children\, such as healthcare facilities and its short- to long-term consequences\, as well as the impact of reproductive violence on newborns\, resulting in poor neonatal health and birthing outcomes; attacks on orphanages and schools\, impacting the loss of care for orphans and unaccompanied children\, and inducing academic harm and learning disruptions for children\, respectively. The Commission examines the impact of the conditions of life imposed by Israel in Gaza resulting in preventable mortality of children\, exacerbating morbidity\, and serious mental trauma from the relentless and widespread attacks by Israel over two years – collectively revealing severe\, multi-layered harm to Palestinian children’s survival\, health\, and development. Further\, the Commission examines how Israeli soldiers mock and weaponize symbols of childhood in Gaza\, raising ethical\, disciplinary and legal questions about the conduct of the Israeli security forces during the ground invasion of Gaza. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nDe forten van de Hollandse Waterlinies blijken een ideaal leefgebied te zijn voor bijzondere bijen. Maar liefst een derde van alle Nederlandse bijensoorten zijn hier terug te vinden. In Middelburg leeft de grootste kolonie kwakken van Nederland. Mede doordat ze worden bijgevoerd is het aantal broedparen opgelopen tot zo’n vijfentwintig. Ondanks de stikstofcrisis groeien landbouw en natuur steeds dichter naar elkaar toe. Volgende week dinsdag viert Boerennatuur\, de koepel van agrarische collectieven\, zijn tienjarig bestaan. DESCRIPTION:Desertification is the degradation of land in arid\, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas\, it is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. \nDesertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world’s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nIn 2026\, Desertification and Drought Day put rangelands at the centre of global attention. Held under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”\, this year’s observance calls for greater recognition of the economic\, ecological and cultural value of rangelands\, respect for their traditional stewards and stronger investment in restoring degraded rangelands. Rangelands are among the world’s most extensive yet most overlooked ecosystems. Covering more than half of the Earth’s land surface\, they play a vital role in food security\, water cycles\, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. They support the lives of around two billion people worldwide\, including many pastoralists and Indigenous Peoples whose knowledge and stewardship have sustained these landscapes for generations. This year’s event aligns with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists\, helping to underscore the need to raise awareness\, encourage responsible investment and strengthen policies that safeguard rangelands and pastoralist livelihoods. Up to half of the world’s rangelands are degraded or at risk\, with serious consequences for food and water security\, biodiversity\, climate resilience and rural livelihoods. Yet viable pathways for action already exist. Het Nederlandse strafrecht biedt immers ruimte voor maatwerk\, waarbij de persoonlijke situatie van de verdachte mag worden meegewogen. Maar door een optelsom van factoren\, is er volgens onderzoekers van het Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek- en Datacentrum (WODC) sprake van een structureel ongunstigere positie voor deze groep mensen. Dit blijkt uit twee vandaag verschenen WODC-rapporten: Vinkjes in het strafrecht? en Scherp op selectiviteit. Eerder verscheen het rapport Van verdenking tot vrijheidsstraf\, dat gaat over etnische selectiviteit. SUMMARY:#WorldDengueDay Wereld Knokkelkoorts Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nAalscholvers jagen door het water langs de Oostvaardersdijk in Flevoland. We volgen de dijk langs moerassen\, dammen en haventjes\, met goudvinken\, zeearenden en brasems. In de natte kwelgraslanden zoeken steltlopers als de grutto naar eten\, tussen planten die je aan zee zou verwachten. De boommarter in de lepelaarkolonie op de strekdammen van Lelystad zorgde dit jaar voor veel commotie in Beleef de Lente. We ontdekken dat er toch wat jongen groot zijn geworden. En vanuit de kano zien we wat het droogleggen van een moeras in de Oostvaardersplassen heeft opgeleverd; hopelijk vangen we een glimp op van de baardmannen. \nLinks:\nVroege Vogels

DESCRIPTION:World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14\, it is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14\, 1868\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. \nWBDD was organised for the first time in 2005\, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation\, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products\, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary\, life-saving gifts of blood. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients who suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life\, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \nThe 2026 campaign\, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”\, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation. It reminds us that each donation is more than a medical act: it is a powerful expression of solidarity\, compassion and collective responsibility. Inspired by the idea that the whole of humanity can be reflected in a single drop\, the campaign highlights how every donor helps form a lifeline that connects and protects us all. While advances in science\, testing and blood safety systems have made transfusion safer than ever\, safe blood remains dependent on people willing to donate regularly and voluntarily. DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. Het festival zal bestaan uit twee delen: een middagprogramma en een avondprogramma. DESCRIPTION:Oerol is een jaarlijks terugkerend tiendaags cultureel festival in juni\, dat wordt gehouden op het Nederlandse eiland Terschelling. \nDit festival werd in 1981 opgericht door Joop Mulder\, destijds eigenaar van café De Stoep in Midsland. De naam van het Festival is afgeleid van het woord “overal” in Terschellings. Oerol wordt geprogrammeerd aan het begin van de zomer\, als het eiland volop in het groen staat. Heel Terschelling vormt de locatie voor het Festival\, waarbij intensief wordt opgetrokken met Staatsbosbeheer\, een van de partners. Op Oerol is ruimte voor het experiment en jonge makers\, maar er is ook plek voor gevestigde groepen die die in première gaan op Oerol. Ieder jaar komen bezoekers naar de Nederlandse en internationale theatervoorstellingen\, muziek\, Expedities\, Talks en Pop-up Performance tijdens deze tijdelijke maatschappij op een eiland. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2026 Theme: Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults. The 2026 World Day comes at a decisive moment. The 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour\, held in Marrakech\, reaffirmed the urgent need to accelerate action and translate commitments into concrete results. The Marrakech Global Framework for Action against Child Labour provides a concrete roadmap and indicators for tackling child labour through integrated responses that address root causes and protect every child’s rights. Under the slogan “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults”\, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour campaign calls for reinforced action on the policies that prevent child labour and withdrawn children from it:  quality education\, universal social protection\, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults\, stronger laws and enforcement\, better data and monitoring systems\, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains. This action is urgently needed. Despite progress\, 138 million children remain in child labour worldwide\, including nearly 54 million in hazardous work. On this World Day Against Child Labour\, raise the Red card to child labour.
