DESCRIPTION:World Whistleblowers Day was created to raise global public awareness in combating corruption\, the day is about the important role of whistleblowers in combating fraud\, abuse and corruption. \nWhistleblowing (also whistle-blowing or whistle blowing) is the activity of a person\, often an employee\, revealing information about activity within a private or public organization that is deemed illegal\, immoral\, illicit\, unsafe\, unethical or fraudulent. Whistleblowers can use a variety of internal or external channels to communicate information or allegations. Over 83% of whistleblowers report internally to a supervisor\, human resources\, compliance\, or a neutral third party within the company\, hoping that the company will address and correct the issues. A whistleblower can also bring allegations to light by communicating with external entities\, such as the media\, government\, or law enforcement. Some countries legislate as to what constitutes a protected disclosure\, and the permissible methods of presenting a disclosure. Whistleblowing can occur in the private sector or the public sector. Whistleblowers often face retaliation for their disclosure\, including termination of employment. \nSeveral other actions may also be considered retaliatory\, including an unreasonable increase in workloads\, reduction of hours\, preventing task completion\, mobbing or bullying. Laws in many countries attempt to provide protection for whistleblowers and regulate whistleblowing activities. DESCRIPTION:Het rapport Burgerperspectieven 2026 – Bericht 2: De stemming laat zien hoe Nederlanders denken over de maatschappij en de politiek in de winter van 2025/2026 en het voorjaar van 2026. \nMensen zijn minder negatief over het land en de politiek maak maken zich wel zorgen over immigratie\, het tekort aan betaalbare woningen\, nationale en internationale politieke onrust\, de manier van samenleven en de hoge prijzen. Het vertrouwen in de politiek is in de winter van 2025/2026 hoger dan in de aanloop naar de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen\, maar blijft beweeglijk en laag in vergelijking met de periode voor 2021. Naast de stemming over de maatschappij en de politiek deden we in samenwerking met de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) onderzoek naar verschillende factoren die een rol spelen bij opinievorming. Mensen vinden dat je je mening moet kunnen onderbouwen\, informatie niet zomaar moet overnemen en je je alleen moet laten beïnvloeden door betrouwbare bronnen. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding voor origineel\nThe study ‘Global heat stress intensification and its expanding footprint on the human population‘ uses the Copernicus Climate Change Service’s (C3S) ERA5-HEAT dataset to provide a comprehensive global-scale analysis of how heat stress has evolved since 1950. \nUsing the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI)\, the study shows that hazardous heat is becoming more frequent\, more intense and more widespread\, with hotter nights\, longer heat stress seasons and increasing numbers of people exposed to hazardous heat. Heat stress is the leading cause of weather-related mortality worldwide and exacerbates underlying illnesses such as cardiovascular\, respiratory and mental health conditions. As climate warming drives more frequent and intense heat extremes\, understanding how heat is experienced by the human body has become increasingly important. Trends in heatwaves are well documented\, and many people worldwide are exposed to chronic heat; however\, less is known about how these changes translate into trends of heat as experienced by the human population\, particularly at the global scale. Authored by Rebecca Emerton\, Julien Nicolas\, Anna Lombardi and Claudia Di Napoli from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)\, the study ‘Global heat stress intensification and its expanding footprint on the human population’ addresses this gap using the UTCI\, a widely adopted biometeorological thermal stress index that accounts for temperature\, humidity\, wind and radiation\, alongside modelling how the human body responds to the environment. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nNergens anders in Europa vind je een coulisselandschap zo groot als de Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. In dit agrarisch landschap in Oost-Friesland barst het van de gekraagde roodstaarten en de spotvogels. Zij nestelen in houtwallen en elzensingels\, die de boeren hier al eeuwenlang in stand houden. Omdat schaalvergroting er bijna niet heeft plaatsgevonden\, grazen de koeien nog steeds op kleine perceeltjes. DESCRIPTION:World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe\, it falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. \nWorld Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives. Every minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war\, persecution or terror. World Refugee Day 2026 comes at a time when the promise of safety is being tested in every region of the world. Seventy-five years after the adoption of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees\, that promise remains one of the clearest undertakings of the international community: that people forced to flee should not be returned to danger\, and should be able to live in dignity while displaced. Born from the ruins of war\, it was never meant for one region\, one generation or one people\, but for humanity as a whole. That safeguard is urgently needed today. More than 117 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide\, including families uprooted by war in the Sudan\, violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and prolonged crises in Ukraine\, Afghanistan\, the Syrian Arab Republic\, Myanmar and beyond. When people fleeing danger are denied protection\, insecurity deepens: families are driven on to perilous routes\, children lose years of learning\, women and girls face greater risks\, and host communities are left without the support they need. Protecting refugees is therefore not only an act of compassion; it is a condition of stability and peace. “Until Everyone Is Safe” is a call to keep that promise alive. It calls on Governments to uphold fair and accessible asylum systems\, donors to sustain life-saving support\, communities to welcome those forced to flee and each of us to defend the principle that safety must never depend on nationality\, wealth\, race\, religion\, gender\, political opinion or migration status. DESCRIPTION:Stichting Vluchteling organiseert sinds 2010\, rondom Wereldvluchtelingendag (20 juni)\, de Nacht van de Vluchteling om humanitaire crises in de wereld onder de aandacht te brengen. \nDoor middel van dit evenement laten ze zien solidair te zijn met mensen op de vlucht en halen we samen zoveel mogelijk geld op. Met deze opbrengst kan Stichting Vluchteling met haar lokale partners snel ter plekke levensreddende noodhulp bieden zoals onderdak\, medische zorg\, voedsel\, drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen. De Nacht van de Vluchteling is een wandeltocht waar bewustwording\, uitdagende kilometers en de bijzondere sfeer van saamhorigheid centraal staan. Je kan je individueel inschrijven\, maar ook samen met je familie of als organisatie een team starten. Onder de deelnemers zijn er ook mensen met een eigen vluchtverhaal en organisaties die zich dagelijks inzetten voor dit thema. Dit zorgt onderweg voor mooie ontmoetingen en gesprekken. In 2026 wordt gelopen voor noodhulp in Afghanistan\, Libanon\, Somalië\, Burkina Faso en Oekraïne. In 2026 bestaat Stichting Vluchteling 50 jaar. Dit is natuurlijk geen jubileum om te vieren\, maar een moment om samen stil te staan bij de veerkracht van mensen op de vlucht en bij waarom dit werk nog altijd nodig is. Al 50 jaar zet Stichting Vluchteling zich in voor mensen op de vlucht door noodhulp te bieden daar waar dat het hardst nodig is. En daarom komen ze ook in 2026 opnieuw samen in beweging. Speciaal vanwege dit 50-jarig bestaan wordt éénmalig een 50 km-route toegevoegd in de steden Rotterdam\, Utrecht en Nijmegen. DESCRIPTION:In July 2021\, the UN General Assembly highlighted global concerns over “the exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech” around the world and adopted a resolution on “promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech”. \nThe resolution recognizes the need to counter discrimination\, xenophobia and hate speech and calls on all relevant actors\, including States\, to increase their efforts to address this phenomenon\, in line with international human rights law. The resolution proclaimed 18 June as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech\, building on the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech launched on 18 June 2019. To observe the Day\, the United Nations invites governments\, international organizations\, civil society groups\, and individuals to hold events and initiatives promoting strategies to identify\, address and counter hate speech. This first UN system-wide initiative designed to tackle hate speech provides an essential framework for how the Organization can support and complement States’ efforts. Whether as Member States the private sector\, the media and internet corporations\, faith leaders\, educators\, actors of civil society\, those affected by hate speech\, youth\, or simply as an individual\, we all have the moral duty of speaking out firmly against instances of hate speech and play a crucial role to in countering this scourge. Since the spread of hateful rhetoric can be an early warning of violence – including atrocity crimes – limiting hate speech could contribute to mitigating its impact. Addressing hate speech remains a key priority within the United Nations system\, through the implementation of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Subsequently\, General Assembly resolution A/RES/79/316 adopted in June 2025 “encourages Member States to consider […] initiatives that identify areas for practical action in all sectors and levels of society for the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue\, tolerance\, understanding and cooperation” as a tool to counter hate speech. \nThe UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech underscores the importance of partnerships in the fight against hate speech. Indeed\, as hate speech affects the whole society\, a whole-of-society approach is necessary to address this phenomenon.  Relatedly\, the UN Strategy stresses the need to raise awareness about respect for human rights\, non-discrimination\, coexistence\, acceptance and respect for diversity and understanding of other cultures and religions\, as well as the promotion of intercultural\, interfaith and interreligious dialogue. It urges for the use of advocacy to highlight hate speech trends of concern as well as to express sympathy and support to targeted individuals or groups. This is most resonant in the current context of rising conflicts globally\, both in their frequency and intensity as well as in the ways in which hate speech is used to fuel them. To protect all those at risk of hate speech\, which can lead to incitement to violence\, there is an urgent need to further strengthen practical approaches and tools\, and scalable strategies to break the cycles of hate\, elevate  empathy\, and acceptance\, and respect for diversity as critical pillars in any society and reinforce the foundations of dialogue and understanding as instrumental to building peaceful and just societies. These practical approaches entail policies\, new technologies and innovative partnerships to advance and sustain efforts to not only address the root causes of hate speech but also mitigate its impact on societies and communities and to counter it. They consider the intersection of education\, media\, digital literacy\, monitoring\, data collection and identification of access points for interventions. In the current international landscape\, partnerships also remain essential in designing and implementing these practical tools and approaches for countering hate speech and other noxious narratives and contribute to a healthy information ecosystem. \nLinks:\nDay for Countering Hate Speech

Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory\, including East Jerusalem\, and Israel examines violations and crimes against and affecting Palestinian children\, including serious physical and psychological harm by the Israeli security forces since 7 October 2023 resulting in the death of at least 20\,179 and injury of 44\,143 children. \nThe paper ‘The essence of childhood has been destroyed: Israel’s deliberate targeting of Palestinian children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 7 October 2023‘ describes the deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian children\, including post-ceasefire since the October 2025 Gaza peace plan. The Commission also examines a sharp increase in violence perpetrated by members of Israeli settlers against Palestinian children in the West Bank\, including East Jerusalem. The Commission examines the use of torture\, inhumane and degrading treatment\, including sexual and gender-based violence\, against Palestinian children\, particularly during mass arrests and in detention. It analyses pattern of Israel’s targeting of critical infrastructure essential to children\, such as healthcare facilities and its short- to long-term consequences\, as well as the impact of reproductive violence on newborns\, resulting in poor neonatal health and birthing outcomes; attacks on orphanages and schools\, impacting the loss of care for orphans and unaccompanied children\, and inducing academic harm and learning disruptions for children\, respectively. The Commission examines the impact of the conditions of life imposed by Israel in Gaza resulting in preventable mortality of children\, exacerbating morbidity\, and serious mental trauma from the relentless and widespread attacks by Israel over two years – collectively revealing severe\, multi-layered harm to Palestinian children’s survival\, health\, and development. Further\, the Commission examines how Israeli soldiers mock and weaponize symbols of childhood in Gaza\, raising ethical\, disciplinary and legal questions about the conduct of the Israeli security forces during the ground invasion of Gaza. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nDe forten van de Hollandse Waterlinies blijken een ideaal leefgebied te zijn voor bijzondere bijen. Maar liefst een derde van alle Nederlandse bijensoorten zijn hier terug te vinden. In Middelburg leeft de grootste kolonie kwakken van Nederland. Mede doordat ze worden bijgevoerd is het aantal broedparen opgelopen tot zo’n vijfentwintig. Ondanks de stikstofcrisis groeien landbouw en natuur steeds dichter naar elkaar toe. Volgende week dinsdag viert Boerennatuur\, de koepel van agrarische collectieven\, zijn tienjarig bestaan. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world’s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nIn 2026\, Desertification and Drought Day put rangelands at the centre of global attention. Held under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”\, this year’s observance calls for greater recognition of the economic\, ecological and cultural value of rangelands\, respect for their traditional stewards and stronger investment in restoring degraded rangelands. Rangelands are among the world’s most extensive yet most overlooked ecosystems. Covering more than half of the Earth’s land surface\, they play a vital role in food security\, water cycles\, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. They support the lives of around two billion people worldwide\, including many pastoralists and Indigenous Peoples whose knowledge and stewardship have sustained these landscapes for generations. This year’s event aligns with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists\, helping to underscore the need to raise awareness\, encourage responsible investment and strengthen policies that safeguard rangelands and pastoralist livelihoods. Up to half of the world’s rangelands are degraded or at risk\, with serious consequences for food and water security\, biodiversity\, climate resilience and rural livelihoods.
