DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2025 Theme: Progress is clear\, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts! The 2025 World Day will focus on a key milestone: the release of the 2025 global estimates and trends of child labour. This joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will offer a comprehensive assessment of global progress toward the elimination of child labour. Although the detailed data are not yet available\, the estimates and trends identified will guide policy debates and calls for renewed commitment and investment. On this World Day\, ILO calls for full ratification of ILO Convention No. 138 on the Minimum Age and the implementation of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour.  Their effective ratification and implementation remain essential to achieving the goals set by the Durban Call to Action\, which urges us to aim for for strengthened prevention\, protection\, and partnerships to eliminate child labour. DESCRIPTION:The Dutch city of Amsterdam thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms\, its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair? \n\nThere’s an ongoing debate about whether algorithms can ever be fair when tasked with making decisions that shape people’s lives. Over the past several years of efforts to use artificial intelligence in this way\, examples of collateral damage have mounted: nonwhite job applicants weeded out of job application pools in the US\, families being wrongly flagged for child abuse investigations in Japan\, and low-income residents being denied food subsidies in India. Proponents of these assessment systems argue that they can create more efficient public services by doing more with less and\, in the case of welfare systems specifically\, reclaim money that is allegedly being lost from the public purse. In practice\, many were poorly designed from the start. They sometimes factor in personal characteristics in a way that leads to discrimination\, and sometimes they have been deployed without testing for bias or effectiveness. In general\, they offer few options for people to challenge—or even understand—the automated actions directly affecting how they live. \nWhen Amsterdam set out to create an AI model to detect potential welfare fraud\, officials thought it could break a decade-plus trend of discriminatory algorithms that had harmed people all over the world. City officials in the welfare department believed they could build technology that would prevent fraud while protecting citizens’ rights. They followed these emerging best practices and invested a vast amount of time and money in a project that eventually processed live welfare applications. But in their pilot\, they found that the system they’d developed was still not fair and effective. Why? Lighthouse Reports\, MIT Technology Review\, and the Dutch newspaper Trouw have gained unprecedented access to the system to try to find out. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. The theme for 2025 International Day of Play is “Choose Play – Every Day”. Het omvat een ranglijst van alle VN-lidstaten die het VN-Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het Kind hebben geratificeerd en waarvoor voldoende gegevens beschikbaar zijn\, anno 2025 maken in totaal 194 landen deel uit van de Index. De geestelijke gezondheid en het mentaal welzijn van kinderen en adolescenten bereikt wereldwijd een kritiek niveau. Het KidsRights Index 2025 rapport vraagt aandacht voor deze problematiek en voor het verontrustende verband met problematisch gebruik van sociale media. Bovendien blijkt uit het indexrapport van dit jaar dat de score van Nederland op het waarmaken van kinderrechten in het algemeen verder daalt. DESCRIPTION:Het (voormalig) kabinet geeft geen ene moer om onderwijs en wetenschap\, in de voorjaarsnota zijn zelfs extra bezuinigingen aangekondigd: Dit is geen bezuiniging meer\, dit is een regelrechte sloopoperatie. \n25.000 mensen stonden er op het Malieveld\, en tijdens de estafettestakingen kwamen nog eens 32.500 mensen in actie. Toch gaat het kabinet door met de sloop van ons onderwijs: in de voorjaarsnota zijn zelfs extra bezuinigingen van 400 miljoen aangekondigd. Daarom wordt op 10 juni 2025 opnieuw door medewerkers en studenten in het hoger onderwijs het werk neergelegd\, de locatie van de stakingsmanifestatie is (verplaatst naar) De Dam in Amsterdam. De eis blijft staan: alle bezuinigingen moeten van tafel. SUMMARY:Staking spoorwegpersoneel NS / Petitie solidariteit
DESCRIPTION:Op dinsdag 10 juni 2025 rijden er in heel Nederland geen NS-treinen als gevolg van een staking in West-Nederland georganiseerd door vakbonden. \nDe NS heeft besloten om in heel Nederland geen treinen te laten. De ontevredenheid en actiebereidheid onder het NS-personeel is groot. Dat bleek tijdens de ledenraadpleging die de FNV de afgelopen weken heeft gehouden. Ruim 90% stemde volmondig voor stakingen. De NS heeft niet gereageerd op het ultimatum van de vakbonden voor een betere cao en daarmee zijn stakingen niet meer af te wenden. Spoorwegpersoneel verdient beter: op zijn minst compensatie van de inflatie. Terwijl de leden van de Raad van Bestuur van NS er vorig jaar ruim €20.000 bijkregen\, moeten de medewerkers het doen met een loonbod dat met 2\,5% ver onder inflatieniveau ligt. Daarbij komt dat de werkgever geen duimbreed toegeeft op cruciale arbeidsvoorwaarden als de zwaarwerkregeling en onregelmatige diensten. Dit alles zorgt voor een steeds hogere werkdruk. Het is dan ook niet vreemd dat het ziekteverzuim bij de NS torenhoog is. Zonder verbeteringen in de cao zullen ook reizigers daar last van gaan krijgen\, want het ziekteverzuim heeft logischerwijs invloed op dienstverlening en dienstregeling. Staken is het laatste drukmiddel. WijReizenSamen steunt hun strijd voor betere arbeidsvoorwaarden\, waaronder een betere zwaarwerkregeling (RVU)\, gelijke arbeidsvoorwaarden voor gelijke omstandigheden en voor priodagen thuis en een vuilwerkregeling. DESCRIPTION:Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the world’s most widely used weed control agents. Public health concerns have increased since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015. \nTo further investigate the health effects of glyphosate and GBHs\, the Ramazzini Institute launched the Global Glyphosate Study (GGS)\, which is designed to test a wide range of toxicological outcomes. Reported in the research ‘Carcinogenic effects of long-term exposure from prenatal life to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides in Sprague–Dawley rats‘ are the results of the carcinogenicity arm of the GGS. Glyphosate and two GBHs\, Roundup Bioflow used in the European Union (EU) and RangerPro used in the U.S.\, were administered to male and female Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats\, beginning at gestational day 6 (via maternal exposure) through 104 weeks of age. Glyphosate was administered through drinking water at three doses: the EU acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0.5 mg/kg body weight/day\, 5 mg/kg body weight/day and the EU no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of 50 mg/kg body weight/day. The two GBH formulations were administered at the same glyphosate-equivalent doses. \nIn all 3 treatment groups\, statistically significant dose-related increased trends or increased incidences of benign and malignant tumors at multiple anatomic sites were observed compared to historical and concurrent controls. These tumors arose in haemolymphoreticular tissues (leukemia)\, skin\, liver\, thyroid\, nervous system\, ovary\, mammary gland\, adrenal glands\, kidney\, urinary bladder\, bone\, endocrine pancreas\, uterus and spleen (hemangiosarcoma). Increased incidences occurred in both sexes. Most of these involved tumors that are rare in SD rats (background incidence < 1%) with 40% of leukemias deaths in the treated groups occurring before 52 weeks of age and increased early deaths were also observed for other solid tumors. \nGlyphosate and GBHs at exposure levels corresponding to the EU ADI and the EU NOAEL caused dose-related increases in incidence of multiple benign and malignant tumors in SD rats of both sexes. Early-life onset and mortality were observed for multiple tumors. These results provide robust evidence supporting IARC’s conclusion that there is “sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity [of glyphosate] in experimental animals”. De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nTwee lammetjes worden geboren\, precies op het moment dat het Vroege Vogels-team aanwezig is. Tussen de heuvels van Zuid-Limburg grazen deze Mergellandschapen op de kalkrijke graslanden. Vroege Vogels bivakkeert in het Gerendal en verkent de omgeving. Hier is ‘Operatie Peperboompje’ actief\, een reddingsactie voor bedreigde plantensoorten als knikkend nagelkruid. In de Gulp zoeken onderzoekers naar jonge beekforellen. Geelgorzen\, zanglijsters\, zwartkoppen en graspiepers vliegen door het Limburgse landschap\, terwijl kieviten en witgatjes profiteren van het kalkmoeras. Het evenement biedt live optredens van de meest getalenteerde en populaire folkmuzikanten uit de hele wereld evenals een variatie aan andere bijzondere activiteiten zoals workshops\, boogschieten en demonstraties van traditionele ambachten. Het Rapalje Zomerfolk Festival is in 2023 bovendien verkozen tot het beste festival van Europa bij de CeltCast Fantasy Awards. Gehouden in het mooiste gedeelte van het Stadspark\, de Zonneweide\, kun je genieten van de levendige sfeer en muziek terwijl je tegelijkertijd kennis kunt maken met de cultuur en tradities van  landen waar de Keltische folk leeft. Verder is er een grote selectie aan heerlijk eten en drinken\, een gezellige markt\, kinderdorp en vele workshops\,\, volledig passend bij het thema. \nRapalje is een Nederlandse band die Ierse\, Schotse en Nederlandse folkmuziek speelt. De zang bij de muziek is zowel Engels- als Nederlandstalig. De bandleden William\, Maceál en David spelen op muziekinstrumenten zoals tinwhistle\, low whistle\, gitouki\, trekmelodica\, mondharmonica\, bodhrán\, theekistbas en doedelzak. Gekleed in kilt speelt de groep op veel verschillende gelegenheden\, zoals (folk)festivals\, (theater)concerten en (middeleeuwse) feesten. In de oorspronkelijke samenstelling bestond Rapalje uit Dieb den Boer\, William van der Laan en Marcel Meijer (Maceál). David Myles is er later bij gekomen; eerst als vaste gast en later als volwaardig bandlid. DESCRIPTION:De Roparun (“Rotterdam Parijs run”) is een non-stop estafetteloop die sinds 1992 wordt gehouden\, voorheen vond de loop plaats tussen Rotterdam en Parijs\, tegenwoordig zijn er twee routes: vanuit Frankrijk\, met Clastres als startplaats\, en Enschede naar Rotterdam. \nIn het pinksterweekeinde\, van zaterdagmiddag tot en met maandagmiddag\, moeten de deelnemers een afstand van ongeveer 500 kilometer afleggen. Tot 2004 liepen de deelnemers\, destijds nog in het Hemelvaartweekend\, van Rotterdam naar Parijs\, maar sinds 2004 start de run in Parijs en is de finish op de Coolsingel in Rotterdam. Al vanaf het eerste jaar is het ophalen van geld het hoofddoel van deze sportieve prestatie. Het geld is bedoeld om projecten te financieren die het leven van mensen met kanker\, voor zover mogelijk\, veraangenamen. “Leven toevoegen aan de dagen\, waar vaak geen dagen meer kunnen worden toegevoegd aan het leven” is het motto van de Stichting Roparun. \nLinks:\nRoparun

DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste vrijdag van juni is het DonutDag (Donut Day / Doughnut Day)\, een buurtfeest waar gratis donuts door het Leger des Heils worden weggegeven. \nDe donut werd bekend toen lang geleden\, aan het front van de Eerste Wereldoorlog\, jonge heilssoldates van het Leger des Heils verse donuts uitdeelden aan infanteriesoldaten (Engels: doughboy). De vrouwen die de donuts uitdeelden\, werden al snel ‘donutmeisjes’ (Engels: doughnut dollies’) genoemd. De donut werd een symbool van alles wat het Leger des Heils deed om de ontberingen te verlichten van de aan de frontlinie vechtende mensen. Sindsdien deelt het Leger overal ter wereld donuts uit. Bij rampen en noodsituaties\, maar ook op donutdag. Want juist in moeilijke tijden\, kan iedereen een lach op z’n gezicht gebruiken! \nLinks:\nDonutDag \nDonut Day \nHappy Donut Day
