DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and historically known as Jubilee Day\, Black Independence Day\, and Emancipation Day) is a federal holiday in the United States (US) commemorating emancipation of enslaved African Americans. \nIt is also often observed for celebrating African American culture. Originating in Galveston\, Texas\, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the US since 1866. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17\, 2021\, when President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth’s commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19\, 1865\, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Granger\, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. President Lincoln‘s Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 had outlawed slavery in Texas and the other states that had rebelled against the Union almost two and a half years earlier. Enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied on the advance of Union troops. Texas\, as the most remote of the slave states\, had seen an expansion of slavery and had a low presence of Union troops as the American Civil War ended; thus\, enforcement there had been slow and inconsistent prior to Granger’s announcement. Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared an end to slavery in the Confederate States\, slavery was still legal and practiced in two Union border states – Delaware and Kentucky – until December 6\, 1865\, when ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution abolished chattel slavery nationwide. Additionally\, Indian Territories that had sided with the Confederacy\, namely the Choctaw\, were the last to release those enslaved\, in 1866. \nCelebrations date to 1866\, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. It spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s\, often centering on a food festival. Participants in the Great Migration out of the South carried their celebrations to other parts of the country. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s\, these celebrations were eclipsed by the struggle for postwar civil rights\, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African-American freedom and African-American arts. As of 2021\, South Dakota is the only state that does not recognize Juneteenth\, according to the Congressional Research Service; North Dakota approved recognition of Juneteenth on April 13\, 2021\, with Hawaii becoming the 49th state to recognize the holiday on June 16\, 2021. Modern observance is primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation\, singing traditional songs such as “Swing Low\, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing“\, and reading of works by noted African-American writers\, such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. Celebrations include rodeos\, street fairs\, cookouts\, family reunions\, park parties\, historical reenactments\, and Miss Juneteenth contests. DESCRIPTION:Het is tijd: op 18 september 2025 loopt de deadline af die door de Verenigde Naties is gesteld voor het beëindigen van de Israëlische bezetting van Palestina. \nDie eis komt voort uit het meest recente oordeel van het Internationaal Gerechtshof in Den Haag. Een oordeel dat glashelder stelt: de bezetting is illegaal en moet stoppen. De nog altijd uitbreidende en illegale bezetting – ongehinderde roof en verwoesting van Palestijns land – is ook de grondoorzaak van de huidige situatie in Palestina-Israël\, inclusief de genocide in Gaza. Die moet dus zo snel mogelijk weggenomen worden. Toch gaat Nederland door met (wapen)handel en met diplomatieke steun aan Israël. Nederland is hiermee medeplichtig aan zeer ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen. Dat moet stoppen. Het is tijd om de bezetting zelf aan te pakken. En om de rechten van Palestijnen centraal te stellen. De uitspraak van het Internationaal Gerechtshof hebben we vertaald naar een set eisen aan de Nederlandse regering. Welke dat zijn\, lees je op onze site. Het is óók tijd om iedereen ter verantwoording te roepen die bijdraagt – of heeft bijgedragen – aan de illegale bezetting van Palestina en de genocide in Gaza. Bedrijven. The United Nations has a long history of mobilizing the world against hatred of all kinds to defend human rights and advance the rule of law. The impact of hate speech cuts across numerous UN areas of focus\, from protecting human rights and preventing atrocities to sustaining peace\, achieving gender equality and supporting children and youth. In response to the alarming trends of growing xenophobia\, racism and intolerance\, violent misogyny\, antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred around the world\, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech on 18 June 2019. The Plan of Action defines hate speech as any kind of communication in speech\, writing or behaviour that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are — in other words\, based on their religion\, ethnicity\, nationality\, race\, color\, descent\, gender or other identity factor. However\, to date there is no universal definition of hate speech under international human rights law. DESCRIPTION:Op dinsdag 17 juni 2025 rijden er in Oost en Noordwest geen NS-treinen als gevolg van een staking georganiseerd door vakbonden FNV Spoor\, CNV en VVMC. \nDe ontevredenheid en actiebereidheid onder het NS-personeel is groot. Dat bleek tijdens de ledenraadpleging die de FNV de afgelopen weken heeft gehouden. Ruim 90% stemde volmondig voor stakingen. De NS heeft niet gereageerd op het ultimatum van de vakbonden voor een betere cao en daarmee zijn stakingen niet meer af te wenden. Spoorwegpersoneel verdient beter: op zijn minst compensatie van de inflatie. Terwijl de leden van de Raad van Bestuur van NS er vorig jaar ruim €20.000 bijkregen\, moeten de medewerkers het doen met een loonbod dat met 2\,5% ver onder inflatieniveau ligt. Daarbij komt dat de werkgever geen duimbreed toegeeft op cruciale arbeidsvoorwaarden als de zwaarwerkregeling en onregelmatige diensten. Dit alles zorgt voor een steeds hogere werkdruk. Het is dan ook niet vreemd dat het ziekteverzuim bij de NS torenhoog is. Zonder verbeteringen in de cao zullen ook reizigers daar last van gaan krijgen\, want het ziekteverzuim heeft logischerwijs invloed op dienstverlening en dienstregeling. Staken is het laatste drukmiddel. WijReizenSamen steunt hun strijd voor betere arbeidsvoorwaarden\, waaronder een betere zwaarwerkregeling (RVU)\, gelijke arbeidsvoorwaarden voor gelijke omstandigheden en voor priodagen thuis en een vuilwerkregeling. Ook verdienen NS-medewerkers een fatsoenlijke beloning. En daar ben jij bij nodig: spreek je steun uit voor de medewerkers en teken de petitie! \nDe stakingen bij de NS gaan door. Er wordt in ieder geval dinsdag 17 juni 2025 gestaakt in de regio’s Oost en Noordwest. Dat laat vakbond FNV Spoor weten. Vrijdag nodigde NS de vakbonden uit voor een nieuw overleg op dinsdag 17 juni. Voorwaarde was wel dat de acties werden gestaakt. Maar het loonbod is amper verhoogd en er is nog steeds niets geregeld over zware beroepen\, koopkracht\, of gelijke rechten. FNV Spoor heeft vanochtend zelf nog geprobeerd om het gesprek met NS op gang te brengen. De bond had daar de hele dag tijd voor vrijgemaakt\, maar NS had slechts twee uurtjes gereserveerd. De aangekondigde staking op dinsdag 17 juni gaat dus door. In de regio’s Oost en Noordwest zal het werk vanaf 04:00 stilgelegd worden. De staking duurt tot woensdagochtend 18 juni 03:59. FNV Spoor benadrukt dat een goede cao niet alleen belangrijk is voor NS-personeel\, maar ook voor reizigers. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world’s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nUnder the theme “Restore the land. Unlock the оpportunities”\, the 2025 observance shines a light on how restoring nature’s foundation—land—can create jobs\, boost food and water security\, support climate action and build economic resilience. Healthy land underpins thriving economies\, with over half of global GDP dependent on nature. Yet we are depleting this natural capital at an alarming rate: every minute\, the equivalent of four football fields is lost due to land degradation. This drives biodiversity loss\, increasing drought risk and displacing communities. The ripple effects are global—from rising food prices to instability and migration. Desertification\, land degradation\, and drought are among the most pressing environmental challenges of our time\, with up to 40% of all land area worldwide already considered degraded. As the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 marks its halfway point\, we must accelerate efforts to turn the tide of land degradation into large-scale restoration. If current trends continue\, we will need to restore 1.5 billion hectares of land and jumpstart a trillion-dollar land restoration economy by 2030. DESCRIPTION:De Opstand in Soweto op 16 juni 1976 was een belangrijke gebeurtenis in de strijd tegen het Apartheidsbewind in Zuid-Afrika. \nSoweto is de afkorting voor South Western Townships\, de townships voor de zwarte bevolking ten zuidwesten van Johannesburg. Aanleiding voor de opstand waren de plannen van minister van onderwijs\, Andries Treurnicht\, om het Afrikaans als algemene onderwijstaal in te voeren. Uit protest daartegen verzamelden de scholieren zich onder leiding van de scholier Tsietsi Mashinini voor een demonstratie in Orlando\, Soweto. De politie sloeg de scholierenopstand keihard neer. Volgens de opgave van de politie kwamen bij de rellen 23 mensen om het leven; volgens de andere bronnen lag het aantal slachtoffers ruim boven de 500. Na de opstand werden talrijke jongeren bij razzia’s opgepakt. De onlusten sloegen over op andere townships en duurden tot 1978. Het bloedbad leidde tot stakingen van de zwarte bevolking en wereldwijde protesten. Het eerste slachtoffer van de opstand was de scholier Hastings Ndlovu. Veel bekender is echter de naam van Hector Pieterson. De foto waarop Hectors lichaam door zijn vriend Nbuyisa Mukhubu wordt weggedragen van het tumult\, is de wereld overgegaan en heeft de wereld gechoqueerd. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nHonderden jaren geleden liep dwars door Noord-Holland het Oer-IJ. Nu herinneren kronkelige sloten\, natte weilanden en een open duinvlakte aan deze voormalige rivier. Het Vroege Vogels-team bivakkeert in dit historische gebied waar tegenwoordig talloze grutto’s broeden en dotterbloemen bloeien. Met een kano varen ze langs kieviten\, scholeksters en kluten die druk bezig zijn met hun nestjes. Op de plek waar de rivier uitmondde in zee\, staan nu typische duinplanten zoals walstrobremraap en de gewone vleugeltjesbloem. DESCRIPTION:Op 18 mei 2025 trokken 100.000 mensen een massale Rode Lijn door Den Haag en eisten actie tegen de genocide in Gaza\, maar het kabinet Schoof heeft niet geluisterd en niet geleverd. \nDat wordt niet geaccepteerd. Volgens de coalitiepartijen lag dat aan de PVV. Die partij is nu weg. En dus niet langer een excuus. Demissionair of niet – concrete stappen zijn nú nodig. Want de situatie in Gaza is alleen maar verder verslechterd. De bevolking wordt gebombardeerd\, verdreven en welbewust uitgehongerd. Het is onmenselijk. Het is onverdraaglijk. Sluit je aan op zondag 15 juni. Gaza kan niet wachten op verkiezingen. Nederland moet nú alles doen om het geweld te stoppen. Nederland moet nu in actie komen. En dat kán: \n\nDoor een handelsverbod met Israël in te stellen.\nDoor uit het EU-Israël Associatieverdrag te stappen.\nDoor alle militaire samenwerking en wapenhandel te beëindigen.\nDoor eindelijk de staat Palestina te erkennen.\n\nSamen laten we de politiek weten dat Nederland een land is dat staat voor het internationaal recht en voor medemenselijkheid. En gaan door tot onze leiders de Rode Lijn trekken en de Nederlandse medeplichtigheid aan Israëls oorlogsmisdaden stopt. Trek samen met organisatoren Oxfam Novib\, Pax\, Amnesty International\, Save the Children en Artsen zonder Grenzen. opnieuw de Rode Lijn – meld je aan en laat zien: wij zijn met meer! Kun je er zondag niet bij zijn? Er zijn verschillende manieren waarop je nog steeds mee kan doen en kan opkomen voor de Palestijnen in Gaza. Thuis\, op je werk\, in je buurt of online: laat zien waar jij staat en dat jij weigert weg te kijken. Dat ook jij de rode lijn trekt. Want onrecht stopt niet vanzelf. Verandering komt alleen als mensen opstaan\, niet wanneer zij stil blijven en wegkijken. En samen staan we sterk\, want wij zijn met meer. \nIedere daad van verzet\, groot of superklein\, telt mee. Zo was Utrecht de eerste gemeente die de situatie in Gaza erkent als een genocide en het ook zo zal noemen. Dit besluit werd genomen nadat een BIJ1 gemeenteraadslid een motie indiende. Meer dan twintig gemeenten volgden hen. Ook jij kunt een gemeenteraadslid in je eigen gemeente benaderen voor hetzelfde. Bovendien is Den Haag misschien niet toegankelijk of goed bereikbaar voor iedereen\, dus dit is een manier om dichter bij huis in actie te komen. \nAls individu heb je ook nog twee andere manieren om macht uit te oefenen\, namelijk als burger én als consument. Als burger heb je stemrecht\, hiermee kun je zelf kiezen om op een partij of persoon te stemmen die zich inzet voor Palestina en staat voor de rechten van Palestijnen. Dit kun je doen bij de volgende landelijke en gemeenteraadsverkiezingen. \nAls consument kun je andere en bewustere keuzes maken\, want in geld zit macht. Of dat nou gaat om je bank\, zorgverzekering\, je vakantie of gewoon je dagelijkse boodschappen\, check van tevoren hoe eerlijk deze zijn. Zo investeren veel banken en verzekeringen nog flink in de wapenindustrie of bieden vakantieplatformen ook locaties aan in illegale Israëlische nederzettingen. Representatives of other states and international organizations are often invited as guests\, with Russia having been a formal member (as part of the G8) from 1997 until its expulsion in 2014. The G7 is not based on a treaty and has no permanent secretariat or office. SUMMARY:#WorldDengueDay Wereld Knokkelkoorts Dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. Additionally\, the Forum will give countries around the world a platform to share their strategies for increasing public awareness of dengue\, mobilize resources for its prevention and control\, and demonstrate their commitment to tackling dengue. \nLinks:\nWorld Dengue Day

SUMMARY:Nacht van de Vluchteling 2025
DESCRIPTION:Stichting Vluchteling organiseert sinds 2010\, rondom Wereldvluchtelingendag (20 juni)\, de Nacht van de Vluchteling om humanitaire crises in de wereld onder de aandacht te brengen. \nDoor middel van dit evenement laten ze zien solidair te zijn met mensen op de vlucht en halen we samen zoveel mogelijk geld op. Met deze opbrengst kan Stichting Vluchteling met haar lokale partners snel ter plekke levensreddende noodhulp bieden zoals onderdak\, medische zorg\, voedsel\, drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen. De Nacht van de Vluchteling is een wandeltocht waar bewustwording\, uitdagende kilometers en de bijzondere sfeer van saamhorigheid centraal staan. Je kan je individueel inschrijven\, maar ook samen met je familie of als organisatie een team starten. Onder de deelnemers zijn er ook mensen met een eigen vluchtverhaal en organisaties die zich dagelijks inzetten voor dit thema. Dit zorgt onderweg voor mooie ontmoetingen en gesprekken. In 2025 wordt gestart vanuit; Amsterdam\, Utrecht\, Rotterdam\, Nijmegen\, Tilburg én voor het eerst in Groningen! De 10 – en 20 km routes finishen op dezelfde startlocatie.
