DESCRIPTION:De Vierdaagse Nijmegen\, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen\, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli.\n\nHet is de grootste meerdaagse wandelprestatietocht ter wereld en staat inmiddels ook bekend als The Walk of the World. Elk jaar doen er deelnemers uit circa tachtig landen mee\, onder wie een groot aantal militairen. De Vierdaagse kent drie verplichte afstanden: 30\, 40 en 50 kilometer. In de week dat de Vierdaagse Nijmegen wordt gehouden worden in de binnenstad van Nijmegen ook de Vierdaagsefeesten (voorheen Nijmeegse Zomerfeesten) gehouden. In de diverse doorkomstgemeenten van de Vierdaagse Nijmegen worden ook festiviteiten georganiseerd. Vele honderdduizenden supporters van de Vierdaagse zijn de hele Vierdaagseweek in de regio aanwezig. \nGebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren\, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein. Gestart wordt in afstandsblokken ’s ochtends vanaf 04:00; de uiterlijke finishtijd is de eerste drie dagen 17:00 en op vrijdag 18:00. Militaire deelnemers starten en melden af op het militaire kamp Heumensoord. \nHet evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontvangst in Stadion De Goffert in Nijmegen gehouden. In 2011 werd de vlaggenparade voor de laatste keer gehouden vanwege de teruglopende belangstelling. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 15 July 2025\, European Union (EU) foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to decide whether to impose sanctions on Israel. \nThis is a crucial moment for the EU to draw a red line and stop pumping billions of euros into Israel’s economy\, fuelling genocide and occupation. SOMO’s analysis of trade and foreign investment into and from Israel reveals how deeply intertwined the European and Israeli economies are. Based on this analysis\, SOMO calls for the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement\, along with a full arms embargo\, extensive economic sanctions and corporate accountability. The EU is the largest investor in Israel worldwide\, nearly twice as big as the United States (US). According to the most recent IMF data on foreign investment\, EU member states held €72.1 billion in foreign investment in Israel in 2023\, compared to €39.2 billion for the US. Israel itself has invested €65.9 billion in the EU\, seven times as much as in the US (€8.8 billion). That makes the EU the main destination for Israeli investment. Despite Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and its unlawful occupation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory\, the EU increased exports to Israel by €1 billion\, standing at €25.5 billion in 2023 and €26.7 billion in 2024. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner\, and its total trade with Israel in 2024\, including imports and exports\, amounted to €42.6 billion. This is significantly more than the US\, whose trade with Israel totalled €31.6 billion in the same year. Of all EU member states\, the Netherlands is by far the largest investor in Israel and is responsible for two-thirds of EU investment in Israel. In fact\, no other country worldwide has more investments in Israel. With €50 billion in investment held by Dutch companies in 2023\, the Netherlands even tops the US. Participants have highlighted the ever-increasing significance of skills as the world is embarking on a transition towards a sustainable model of development. Education and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality. \nTechnical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability. \nTVET can equip youth with the skills required to access the world of work\, including skills for self-employment. TVET can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities\, increase productivity and increase wage levels. TVET can reduce access barriers to the world of work\, for example through work-based learning\, and ensuring that skills gained are recognised and certified. TVET can also offer skills development opportunities for low-skilled people who are under- or unemployed\, out of school youth and individuals not in education\, employment and training (NEETs). World Youth Skills Day 2021 will again take place in a challenging context due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. DESCRIPTION:In 2023 kregen bijna 300 duizend mensen ADHD-middelen verstrekt\, dat waren er bijna vier keer zo veel als de 78 duizend in 2006. \nSteeds vaker krijgen 25-plussers ADHD-medicatie. Onder de 20 jaar krijgen meer jongens dan meiden ADHD-middelen\, daarna zijn de verschillen kleiner. Dit blijkt uit cijfers van het CBS. Gegevens over verstrekkingen van ADHD-middelen zijn beschikbaar sinds de start van de Zorgverzekeringswet in 2006. ADHD staat voor Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Mensen met ADHD kunnen onder andere moeite hebben hun aandacht ergens bij te houden\, erg druk zijn en/of impulsief gedrag vertonen. In 2023 kregen 170 duizend mannen en 130 duizend vrouwen ADHD-middelen zoals methylfenidaat. In 2006 ging het om 0\,5 procent van de Nederlandse bevolking. Dat was in 2023 gestegen naar ruim 1\,5 procent\, dat is drieënhalf keer zo veel. Bij vrouwen was de toename sterker (bijna zes keer zoveel) dan bij mannen (ruim tweeënhalf keer zo veel). De verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen zijn daardoor kleiner zijn geworden. ADHD-middelen worden steeds vaker ook verstrekt aan 25-plussers. In 2023 was de helft van de mensen die de middelen kregen 25 jaar of ouder. DESCRIPTION:World Orca Day is a celebration of the species orca or killer whale (Orcinus orca)\, a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family\, of which it is the largest member. \nIt is recognizable by its black body with a white underside and patches near each eye. Killer whales have a diverse diet\, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish\, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and other species of dolphin. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves\, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators\, as they have no natural predators. A cosmopolitan species\, killer whales can be found in all of the world’s oceans in a variety of marine environments\, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas\, absent only from the Baltic and Black seas\, and some areas of the Arctic Ocean. They are highly social; some populations are composed of very stable matrilineal family groups (pods) which are the most stable of any animal species. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviours\, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations\, have been described as manifestations of animal culture. \nThe International Union for Conservation of Nature assesses the orca’s conservation status as data deficient because of the likelihood that two or more killer whale types are separate species. Some local populations are considered threatened or endangered due to prey depletion\, habitat loss\, pollution (by PCBs)\, capture for marine mammal parks\, and conflicts with human fisheries. In late 2005\, the southern resident killer whales\, which swim in British Columbia and Washington state waters\, were placed on the U.S. Endangered Species list. Wild killer whales are not considered a threat to humans and no fatal attack on humans has ever been documented\, but there have been cases of captive orcas killing or injuring their handlers at marine theme parks. DESCRIPTION:Evenement om aandacht te vragen voor de bedreigingen waar haaien mee te maken hebben. \nFeit is dat deze machtige roofdieren meer van ons te duchten hebben dan andersom. Meer dan 100 miljoen haaien leggen elk jaar het loodje en diverse soorten dreigen uit te sterven. De grootste bedreiging voor de haaien is zoals gewoonlijk de mens. Onze motorboten\, visnetten en onze angst voor haaien vormen bedreigingen voor het bestaan van de haai. Maar net als andere toppredators op het land spelen haaien een essentiële rol bij het gezond en productief houden van de zeeën. De grootste bedreiging is geld. Simpelweg omdat dode haaien nu eenmaal veel geld opleveren. Alleen al in de haaienvinnensoep verdwijnen miljoenen haaien. Ze worden ook gedood voor hun tanden (souvenir)\, kraakbeen (medicijn) en lever (vitamine A). Sinds de film Jaws vinden veel mensen het stoer om een haai te vangen. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nOp zoek naar haaien in de Noordzee\, een frisse blik op de Drentse AA en een bezoek aan een groot nest jonge ijsvogels. In 2005\, “The Sweet Adelines International” have founded this cheery holiday on their 60th anniversary. Barbershop vocal harmony\, as codified during the barbershop revival era (1930s–present)\, is a style of a cappella close harmony\, or unaccompanied vocal music\, characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a primarily homorhythmic texture. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally\, the lead sings the melody\, the tenor harmonizes above the melody\, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes\, and the baritone completes the chord\, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or baritone\, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leading\, in tags or codas\, or when some appropriate embellishment can be created. One characteristic feature of barbershop harmony is the use of what is known as “snakes” and “swipes”. This is when a chord is altered by a change in one or more non-melodic voices. Occasional passages may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. \nBarbershop music is generally performed by either a barbershop quartet\, a group of four singers with one on each vocal part\, or a barbershop chorus\, which closely resembles a choir with the notable exception of the genre of music. According to the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS)\, “Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies\, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths\, while making frequent use of other resolutions.” Slower barbershop songs\, especially ballads\, often eschew a continuous beat\, and notes are often held (or sped up) ad libitum. Except for the bass\, the voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to their classical music counterparts; the tenor range and tessitura are similar to those of the classical countertenor\, the baritone resembles the Heldentenor or lyric baritone in range and a tenor in tessitura\, and the lead generally corresponds to the tenor of classical repertoire\, with some singers possessing a tessitura more similar to that of a high baritone. DESCRIPTION:Het Kwaku Summer Festival (voorheen het Kwakoe Zomerfestival) wordt sinds 1975 bijna elk jaar tijdens een aantal weekeinden in de zomer gehouden in het Nelson Mandelapark in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. \nHet is van origine een Surinaams festival\, maar het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een multicultureel festival. Het festival is ontstaan in 1975 als voetbaltoernooi\, georganiseerd door Stichting Jongeren Centrum Kwakoe tijdens het 700-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. Het speelde zich aanvankelijk af op de sportvelden van SV Bijlmer\, op de locatie van het huidige Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Zuidoost. In 1983 verhuisde het festival naar de huidige locatie in het Nelson Mandelapark dat in die tijd Bijlmerpark heette. Eind jaren negentig dienden zowel het jongerencentrum Kwakoe als de organisatie van het festival een vergunningaanvraag in. De festivalorganisatie Stichting Kwakoe Events onder leiding van Winston Kout kreeg de vergunning toegewezen en heeft het festival sindsdien georganiseerd. Van een louter Surinaams feest\, voor arme Surinamers uit de Bijlmerhoogbouw die geen geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan\, ontwikkelde het festival zich sindsdien tot een multicultureel festival dat zich ook op Antillianen en Afrikanen richt. Dan kun je die doorgeven via een nieuwe telling. Heb je een vlinder gezien die niet in de tellijst staat? Dat kan; we tellen alleen de meest voorkomende soorten tuinvlinders. DESCRIPTION:World Population Day is an annual event\, observed on July 11 every year\, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. \nThe event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11\, 1987\, the approximate date on which the world’s population reached five billion people. World Population Day aims to increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning\, gender equality\, poverty\, maternal health and human rights. The day was suggested by Dr. K.C.Zachariah in which population reached five billion when he worked as Sr Demographer at World Bank. In November 2020\, UNFPA\, together with the governments of Kenya and Denmark\, convened a high-level conference in Nairobi to accelerate efforts to achieve these unmet goals. On World Population Day\, advocates from around the world call on leaders\, policymakers\, grassroots organizers\, institutions and others to help make reproductive health and rights a reality for all. \nWhile press interest and general awareness in the global population surges at the increments of whole billions of people\, the world population increases by 100 million approximately every 14 months. It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so\, it grew sevenfold. In 2011\, the global population reached the 7 billion mark\, it stands at almost 7.9 billion in 2021\, and it’s expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030\, 9.7 billion in 2050\, and 10.9 billion in 2100. This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of people surviving to reproductive age\, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates\, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. These trends will have far-reaching implications for generations to come. \nThe recent past has seen enormous changes in fertility rates and life expectancy. In the early 1970s\, women had on average 4.5 children each; by 2015\, total fertility for the world had fallen to below 2.5 children per woman. Meanwhile\, average global lifespans have risen\, from 64.6 years in the early 1990s to  72.6 years in 2019. In addition\, the world is seeing high levels of urbanization and accelerating migration. 2007 was the first year in which more people lived in urban areas than in rural areas\, and by 2050 about 66 per cent of the world population will be living in cities. These megatrends have far-reaching implications. They affect economic development\, employment\, income distribution\, poverty and social protections. They also affect efforts to ensure universal access to health care\, education\, housing\, sanitation\, water\, food and energy. DESCRIPTION:De Val van Srebrenica (ook bekend als het Bloedbad van Srebrenica) is de inname van de Bosnische stad Srebrenica op 11 juli 1995 en de daaropvolgende deportatie en genocide van meer dan 8.000 moslimjongens en -mannen door Bosnisch-Servische troepen\, tot juli 2012 zijn 6.838 slachtoffers geïdentificeerd. \nHet exacte aantal slachtoffers is nooit vast komen te staan. Het NIOD ging in 2002 nog van ongeveer 8.000 doden uit\, maar het Bosnische herdenkingscentrum heeft tot aan 2009\, 8.373 slachtoffers geteld. Na het uiteenvallen van Joegoslavië en de burgeroorlog die daarop volgde werd de stad\, evenals Tuzla\, Sarajevo\, Goražde en Žepa\, door de Verenigde Naties tot veilige enclave verklaard\, binnen een door Bosnische Serviërs beheerst gebied. De aanwezigheid van een internationale vredesmacht onder de vlag van de Verenigde Naties zag toe op de handhaving van Resolutie 819 Veiligheidsraad Verenigde Naties waarbij beide groepen de veiligheid van het VN-personeel moesten garanderen. In 1993 werd Srebrenica door Servische eenheden dusdanig bedreigd dat de stad door de Verenigde Naties werd uitgeroepen tot het eerste “veilig gebied” in het Bosnische conflict. Op 11 juli 1995\, toen ruim 400 Nederlandse UNPROFOR-militairen (achtereenvolgens de bataljons Dutchbat I\, II\,III en IV) in Tuzla en Srebrenica hun humanitaire werk deden\, drongen Bosnisch-Servische troepen onder bevel van generaal Ratko Mladić met hulp van tanks de stad binnen en deporteerden en vermoordden een groot deel van de daar aanwezige moslimmannen en -jongens.
