DESCRIPTION:On 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. \nChess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. Today there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nUnder initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. As an affordable and inclusive activity\, it can be exercised anywhere and played by all\, across the barriers of language\, age\, gender\, physical ability or social status. \nChess is a global game\, which promotes fairness\, inclusion and mutual respect\, and noting in this regard that it can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. Chess also offers important opportunities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals\, including strengthening education\, realizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and fostering inclusion\, tolerance\, mutual understanding and respect. \nLinks:\nWorld Chess Day

DESCRIPTION:De Kermisfestival Tilburg / Tilburgse Kermis is de grootste kermis in de Benelux en wordt gehouden in de Noord-Brabantse plaats Tilburg. \nEr staan jaarlijks tussen de 230 en 240 attracties uit binnen- en buitenland\, in een 4\,5 kilometer lang lint door het centrum van de stad. De kermis trekt jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen bezoekers en is daarmee een van de best bezochte evenementen van Nederland. Hoewel de kermis met de tijd is meegegaan en dus voor het merendeel uit moderne attracties bestaat is er ook plaats ingeruimd voor een nostalgische kermis. De Tilburgse kermis duurt tien dagen: hij eindigt op de laatste zondag van juli en start dus negen dagen eerder op vrijdag. Ieder jaar treden op de themadagen bekende artiesten uit binnen- en buitenland op. Op de eerste zondag is het tussen 11:00 en 14:00 Blauwe zondag. Dit is een speciale ‘prikkelarme’ periode: geluiden en muziek van attracties worden dan gedempt. Op maandag is het Roze Maandag\, een evenement voor homo- en biseksuelen\, lesbiennes en transgenders (LHBT‘ers)\, na een eerste nichtenavond in 1990 werd dit al snel het drukstbezochte onderdeel van de Tilburgse Kermis. Geen geld\, maar iets van hun tijd. De dag waarop Mandela 92 jaar werd\, kon er worden teruggekeken op een leven waarin hij 67 jaar heeft ingezet voor mensenrechten en gelijkheid voor iedereen. Zowel als advocaat als in de tijd dat hij als politiek gevangene 27 jaar vastzat. Op voordracht van de Zuid-Afrikaanse ambassadeur Baso Sangqu is deze dag in 2010 door de Verenigde Naties\, resolutie A/RES/64/13\, officieel uitgeroepen. Nelson (Rolihlahla) Mandela (Mvezo\, 18 juli 1918 – Johannesburg\, 5 december 2013) was advocaat en was president van Zuid-Afrika van 1994 tot 1999. Hij ontving in 1993\, samen met Frederik Willem de Klerk\, de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede. Mandela wordt alom gerespecteerd om zijn volhardende strijd tegen de apartheid\, en was de eerste zwarte president van Zuid-Afrika. DESCRIPTION:Tomorrowland is een grootschalig Belgisch outdoor dance-evenement in De Schorre in Boom\, twee weekenden na elkaar. \nHet festival bestaat uit twee delen: het campingfestival en het eigenlijke festival. Wie op de camping DreamVille verblijft\, kan naar het campingfestival The Gathering gaan\, de avond voor het eigenlijke festival. Tomorrowland wordt afgesloten met een vuurwerkshow. Tienduizenden bezoekers vanuit de hele wereld zakken af naar het festival\, er worden speciale feestvluchten ingelegd. Tomorrowland biedt Global Journey pakketten aan voor buitenlandse bezoekers met vlucht\, trein of bus\, overnachting en een weekendticket voor Tomorrowland inbegrepen. De Pearl is de officiële munteenheid van Tomorrowland. \nHet thema in 2025 is Orbyz\, een zogenaamd magisch universum gevormd uit ijs. Op 16 juli 2025\, twee dagen voor de start van Tomorrowland\, brak een grote brand uit op het hoofdpodium dat hierdoor binnen een uur volledig afbrandde. Er waren een duizendtal medewerkers op de site\, maar er vielen geen slachtoffers. De oorzaak wordt nog onderzocht door branddeskundigen. De volgende dag werd op een persconferentie aangekondigd dat het festival toch kan doorgaan\, met toestemming van de veiligheidsdiensten. De Mainstage is onbruikbaar\, maar er wordt naar oplossingen gezocht. Camping Dreamville wordt geopend. Normaal blijft het hoofdpodium\, waar twee jaar aan gewerkt werd\, geheim gehouden tot de opening. DESCRIPTION:Die Babelsberger Sternennächte finden online statt\, in der Regel gibt es immer am 3. Donnerstag im Monat einen neuen Vortrag einer Wissenschaftlerin oder eines Wissenschaftlers des AIP\, der ab 20 Uhr auf dem YouTube-Kanal von Urknall\, Weltall und das Leben ausgestrahlt wird (Playlist). \nDas Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) der ESO wird derzeit in Chile gebaut. ANDES ist der hochauflösende Spektrograph für dieses Großteleskop\, der hochpräzise und stabile Spektroskopie vom ultravioletten Licht (350 nm) bis ins nahe Infrarot (ca. 2 µm) ermöglichen wird. Das AIP in Potsdam ist für die Entwicklung und den Bau des optisch-ultravioletten Arms des ANDES-Spektrographen\, genannt ANDES-UBV\, zuständig. Dr. Michael Weber ist Leiter der Abteilung „Hochauflösende Spektroskopie und Polarimetrie“ am AIP. Er gibt in seinem Vortrag einen kurzen Abriss der Spektroskopie im Allgemeinen und der hochauflösenden Echelle-Spektroskopie im Speziellen und stellt das ANDES-Projekt vor. DESCRIPTION:Zwarte Cross is het grootste betaalde muziekfestival van Nederland en de grootste motorcross ter wereld. \nDé Achterhoekse vlag\nHet festival vindt plaats op een terrein van 160 hectare in de gemeente Oost Gelre\, vlak tegen Lichtenvoorde aan\, maar het terrein hoort voornamelijk bij Lievelde en deels bij Vragender. Er zijn tientallen podia waarop zo’n 250 bands en 1000 theaterartiesten optredens verzorgen. De organisatie ervan was lange tijd indirect in handen van rockband Jovink en de Voederbietels. \nIn mei 2025 werd bekend dat eind 2024 het bedrijf Superstruct Entertainment\, dat eigenaar is van tientallen festivals waaronder Zwarte Cross\, eind 2024 was opgekocht door het Amerikaanse bedrijf Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR). Dat is omstreden\, omdat het onder andere investeert in de wapenindustrie en Israëlische bedrijven die actief zijn op de Westelijke Jordaanoever\, specifiek het gebied dat door Israël wordt bezet alsmede fossiele brandstoffen zoals een aardgaspijplijn in Canada\, milieuclubs trokken al eerder aan de bel omtrent “vervuilende praktijken”. DESCRIPTION:De Vierdaagse Nijmegen\, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen\, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli.\n\nHet is de grootste meerdaagse wandelprestatietocht ter wereld en staat inmiddels ook bekend als The Walk of the World. Elk jaar doen er deelnemers uit circa tachtig landen mee\, onder wie een groot aantal militairen. De Vierdaagse kent drie verplichte afstanden: 30\, 40 en 50 kilometer. In de week dat de Vierdaagse Nijmegen wordt gehouden worden in de binnenstad van Nijmegen ook de Vierdaagsefeesten (voorheen Nijmeegse Zomerfeesten) gehouden. In de diverse doorkomstgemeenten van de Vierdaagse Nijmegen worden ook festiviteiten georganiseerd. Vele honderdduizenden supporters van de Vierdaagse zijn de hele Vierdaagseweek in de regio aanwezig. \nGebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren\, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein. Gestart wordt in afstandsblokken ’s ochtends vanaf 04:00; de uiterlijke finishtijd is de eerste drie dagen 17:00 en op vrijdag 18:00. Militaire deelnemers starten en melden af op het militaire kamp Heumensoord. \nHet evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontvangst in Stadion De Goffert in Nijmegen gehouden. In 2011 werd de vlaggenparade voor de laatste keer gehouden vanwege de teruglopende belangstelling. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 15 July 2025\, European Union (EU) foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to decide whether to impose sanctions on Israel. \nThis is a crucial moment for the EU to draw a red line and stop pumping billions of euros into Israel’s economy\, fuelling genocide and occupation. SOMO’s analysis of trade and foreign investment into and from Israel reveals how deeply intertwined the European and Israeli economies are. Based on this analysis\, SOMO calls for the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement\, along with a full arms embargo\, extensive economic sanctions and corporate accountability. The EU is the largest investor in Israel worldwide\, nearly twice as big as the United States (US). According to the most recent IMF data on foreign investment\, EU member states held €72.1 billion in foreign investment in Israel in 2023\, compared to €39.2 billion for the US. Israel itself has invested €65.9 billion in the EU\, seven times as much as in the US (€8.8 billion). That makes the EU the main destination for Israeli investment. Despite Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and its unlawful occupation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory\, the EU increased exports to Israel by €1 billion\, standing at €25.5 billion in 2023 and €26.7 billion in 2024. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner\, and its total trade with Israel in 2024\, including imports and exports\, amounted to €42.6 billion. This is significantly more than the US\, whose trade with Israel totalled €31.6 billion in the same year. Of all EU member states\, the Netherlands is by far the largest investor in Israel and is responsible for two-thirds of EU investment in Israel. In fact\, no other country worldwide has more investments in Israel. With €50 billion in investment held by Dutch companies in 2023\, the Netherlands even tops the US.
