DESCRIPTION:Every year\, this most intensely scrutinized of FAO’s reports presents the headline number of undernourished people around the world\, while advocating for strategies against hunger and malnutrition. \nFollowing publication of the global report ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025‘\, a wealth of statistics is disaggregated into regional reports. SOFI is jointly produced with fellow UN agencies IFAD\, UNICEF\, WFP and WHO. While some progress and recovery have been made in recent years\, the world is still above pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels and far from eradicating hunger and food insecurity by 2030 (SDG Target 2.1). Similarly\, despite some progress in the global nutrition targets\, the world is not on track to achieve SDG Target 2.2. Among other factors\, persistent food price inflation has slowed this momentum.The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 highlights how elevated inflation in many countries has undermined purchasing power and\, especially among low-income populations\, access to healthy diets. The report documents how high food price inflation is associated with increases in food insecurity and child malnutrition. \nVulnerable groups\, including low-income households\, women\, and rural communities\, can be particularly affected by food price inflation\, risking setbacks in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.In response to these challenges and to prevent future price shocks\, the report examines policy measures adopted by countries\, and outlines what is necessary going forwards. It stresses the importance of coherent implementation of fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize markets\, promote open and resilient trade\, and protect vulnerable populations. Additionally\, it calls for better data systems and sustained investment in resilient agrifood systems to build long-term food security and nutrition. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. \nSchrijver\, columnist en programmamaker Özcan Akyol (Deventer\, 1984)\, beter bekend als Eus\, is op zondag 27 juli 2025 de eerste Zomergast. Griet Op de Beeck interviewt Akyol over zijn ideale televisieavond. Akyol: ‘In mijn fragmenten toon ik de harde én zachte stemmen die mij hebben gevormd. Van mijn artistieke helden tot onbekende subculturen: ik wil laten zien dat we\, ondanks verschillen in afkomst of klasse\, meer op elkaar lijken dan we denken.’ Özcan Akyol (Deventer\, 1984) debuteert in 2012 met het veelgeprezen semi-autobiografische Eus\, over opgroeien in een arbeiderswijk in Deventer\, als kind van ongeletterde Turkse ouders. Akyol schrijft nog vijf boeken\, naast honderden columns voor onder meer het Algemeen Dagblad. Hij presenteert programma’s bij diverse omroepen en is een graag geziene gast in talkshows. In de televisieseries die hij maakt over Turkije belicht hij de culturele\, religieuze en etnische diversiteit van het land. DESCRIPTION:Hoofd- en hals kanker (HNSCC) is wereldwijd de belangrijkste oorzaak van overlijden en invaliditeit.\n\nEn het bizarre is dat de meeste mensen geholpen hadden kunnen worden wanneer zij eerder naar de huisarts waren gegaan. World Head Neck Cancer day voert campagne om deze vorm van kanker onder de aandacht van de mensen te brengen. Hoofd- en halskanker is relatief zeldzaam. In Nederland krijgen jaarlijks ongeveer 3.000 mensen de diagnose dat ze kanker in het hoofd-halsgebied hebben. Staat gelijk aan ongeveer 5% van het totale aantal mensen die jaarlijks de diagnose kanker krijgen. \nIn België zie je een soort gelijke cijfers\, ook daar gaat het om 5% van alle nieuwe gevallen van kanker. Bij elke ziekte geeft het tijdig herkennen van de klachten grotere overlevingskansen\, dat is bij hoofd-halskanker niet anders. Hoe eerder je naar de huisarts gaat\, hoe sneller je een doorverwijzing krijgt naar een hoofd-hals oncologisch centrum. DESCRIPTION:Vanaf vrijdag 25 juli 2025 organiseert Rotterdam Palestina Coalitie samen met bezorgde burgers en organisaties een doorlopende 24-uurs wake bij het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in Den Haag. \nDeze actie is een dringend moreel en politiek appel op de Nederlandse regering om per direct sancties waaronder een wapenembargo tegen Israël in te stellen\, het associatieverdrag met de zionistische entiteit per direct te verbreken en haar medeplichtigheid aan de genocide in Gaza te beëindigen. Tijdens de wake zullen onafgebroken de namen van de vermoorde Palestijnen hardop voorlezen. De wake is een directe reactie op de aanhoudende weigering van de Nederlandse regering om op te treden tegen de genocide in Gaza. Ondanks protest\, petities\, demonstraties en maatschappelijke oproepen blijft Nederland actief samenwerken met en investeren in het Israëlische apartheidsregime. Het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken is een symbool van de morele crisis waarin Nederland zich bevindt. Nederland is de grootste investeerder in Israël in de Europese Unie. Terwijl in Nederland de armoede toeneemt en er steeds meer mensen op straat leven\, er geen betaalbare woningen zijn\, het onderwijs en de zorg afbrokkelen\, gebruikt Nederland onze belastingcenten om een genocide te financieren. Er is sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog geen hongersnood zo zorgvuldig gepland als in Gaza. Dit is geen natuurverschijnsel. Dit is een bewuste\, politieke keuze. Niet alleen van het zionistische apartheidsregime\, ook van de VS en de EU en dus ook van Nederland. Daarom voelen de deelnemers zich genoodzaakt om in actie te komen en deze 24-uurs wake bij het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken te organiseren. Nederland had eigenhandig allang een halt kunnen toeroepen aan deze holocaust door een volledig economisch embargo op te leggen. Maar Nederland kiest er bewust voor om weg te kijken. DESCRIPTION:Tomorrowland is een grootschalig Belgisch outdoor dance-evenement in De Schorre in Boom\, twee weekenden na elkaar. \nHet festival bestaat uit twee delen: het campingfestival en het eigenlijke festival. Wie op de camping DreamVille verblijft\, kan naar het campingfestival The Gathering gaan\, de avond voor het eigenlijke festival. Tomorrowland wordt afgesloten met een vuurwerkshow. Tienduizenden bezoekers vanuit de hele wereld zakken af naar het festival\, er worden speciale feestvluchten ingelegd. Tomorrowland biedt Global Journey pakketten aan voor buitenlandse bezoekers met vlucht\, trein of bus\, overnachting en een weekendticket voor Tomorrowland inbegrepen. De Pearl is de officiële munteenheid van Tomorrowland. \nHet thema in 2025 is Orbyz\, een zogenaamd magisch universum gevormd uit ijs. Op 16 juli 2025\, twee dagen voor de start van Tomorrowland\, brak een grote brand uit op het hoofdpodium dat hierdoor binnen een uur volledig afbrandde. Er waren een duizendtal medewerkers op de site\, maar er vielen geen slachtoffers. De oorzaak wordt nog onderzocht door branddeskundigen. De volgende dag werd op een persconferentie aangekondigd dat het festival toch kan doorgaan\, met toestemming van de veiligheidsdiensten. De Mainstage is onbruikbaar\, maar er wordt naar oplossingen gezocht. Camping Dreamville wordt geopend. Normaal blijft het hoofdpodium\, waar twee jaar aan gewerkt werd\, geheim gehouden tot de opening. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. It covers the five detection types\, their parameters and statistics\, and the algorithm for finding them.\nSETI@home: Data Analysis and Findings describes the back end (Nebula) and its results: RFI removal\, candidate finding and ranking. It explains how artificial signals\, or ‘birdies’\, were used to optimize algorithms and estimate overall sensitivity.\n\nSETI@home (“SETI at home”) is a project of the Berkeley SETI Research Center to analyze radio signals with the aim of searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Until March 2020\, it was run as an Internet-based public volunteer computing project that employed the BOINC software platform. It is hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of the worldwide SETI effort. SETI@home software was released to the public on May 17\, 1999\, making it the third large-scale use of volunteer computing over the Internet for research purposes\, after Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was launched in 1996 and distributed.net in 1997. Along with MilkyWay@home and Einstein@home\, it has the investigation of phenomena in interstellar space as its primary purpose. In March 2020\, the project stopped sending out new work to SETI@home users\, bringing the crowdsourced computing aspect of the project to a stop. At the time\, the team intended to shift focus onto the analysis and interpretation of the 20 years’ worth of accumulated data. However\, the team left open the possibility of eventually resuming volunteer computing using data from other radio telescopes\, such as MeerKAT and FAST. As of November 2021\, the science team has analysed the data and removed noisy signals (Radio Frequency Interference) using the Nebula tool they developed and will choose the top-scoring 100 or so multiplets to be observed using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope\, to which they have been granted 24 hours of observation time. On March 31\, 2020\, UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process\, ending the effort for the time being. The program stated they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results. Until 2020\, SETI@home procured its data from the Arecibo Observatory facility that was operated by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center and administered by SRI International. The decreasing operating budget for the observatory has created a shortfall of funds which has not been made up from other sources such as private donors\, NASA\, other foreign research institutions\, nor private non-profit organizations such as SETI@home. However\, in the overall long-term views held by many involved with the SETI project\, any usable radio telescope could take over from Arecibo (which completely collapsed in December 2020)\, as all the SETI systems are portable and relocatable. \nLinks:\nSETI@home

DESCRIPTION:Amelia Earhart (Atchison\, 24 juli 1897 – Grote Oceaan?\, vermist sinds 2 juli 1937\, doodverklaard op 5 januari 1939) was een beroemde Amerikaanse vliegenierster. \nIn januari 1935 werd ze de eerste persoon die solo de Grote Oceaan overvloog\, maar ze werd vooral bekend doordat ze als eerste vrouw in 1932 als piloot de Atlantische Oceaan overstak. Die tocht legde ze eveneens solo af. In 1928 was ze die oceaan al als passagier overgestoken. Ook daarin was ze de eerste vrouw. Begin juli 1937 begon ze samen met navigator Fred Noonan aan wat de langste vlucht ter wereld moest worden. De eindbestemming van de 47.000 kilometer lange vlucht werd echter nooit bereikt. DESCRIPTION:July 24th marks Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) in 2025\, the date when humanity’s demand on nature surpasses Earth’s capacity to replenish nature during the entire year. \nCalculated by Global Footprint Network\, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint\, this date is based on the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts maintained by York University. Why it is earlier than last year is explained here. Earth Overshoot Day falling on July 24th means that humanity is currently using nature 1.8 times faster than Earths ecosystems can regenerate. This overshoot occurs because people emit more CO₂ than the biosphere can absorb\, use more freshwater than is replenished\, harvest more trees than can regrow\, fish quicker than stocks replenish\, etc. This overuse beyond what nature can renew inevitably depletes Earth’s natural capital. It compromises long-term resource security\, especially for those who already struggle to access the resources needed to operate. EOD is the calculated illustrative calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term “overshoot” represents the level by which human population’s demand overshoots the sustainable amount of biological resources regenerated on Earth. When viewed through an economic perspective\, the annual Earth Overshoot Day represents the day by which the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent\, and humanity enters environmental deficit spending. DESCRIPTION:Het Internationaal Gerechtshof\, het hoogste juridische orgaan van de Verenigde Naties (VN)\, uitspraak over de verantwoordelijkheid van staten voor klimaatverandering. \n\n\nHet initiatief van Vanuatu\, een eilandstaat in de Stille Oceaan\, om het hoogste rechtsorgaan ter wereld om advies te vragen\, is baanbrekend. Nooit eerder sprak het hof zich uit over klimaatverandering. Hoewel het dus alleen gaat om een advies en de uitspraak niet bindend is\, moet het duidelijkheid geven over de toepassing van het internationaal recht als het gaat om de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Volgens kwetsbare landen zoals Vanuatu gaat het over hun voortbestaan.
