DESCRIPTION:Kappen met Kolen en Extinction Rebellion voeren elke vrijdag actie tegen het gebruik van kolen in Nederland. \nOmdat kolen de klimaatopwarming versnellen en we juist zouden moeten stoppen met kolen. Desondanks kiest de overheid ervoor kolencentrales langer open te houden. Extinction Rebellion eist van de Nederlandse overheid dat zo snel mogelijk wordt gestopt met het winnen\, transporteren en  verstoken van steenkool\, de meest schadelijke fossiele brandstof voor het klimaat\, het milieu en de gezondheid. De dag begint ’s ochtends om 08:00 een Zoom-meeting om te kijken wat men die dag gaan doen en waar ze naar toe gaan. ‘Kappen met kolen’ is een campagne die zich richt op het beëindigen van het gebruik van steenkool\, de meest schadelijke fossiele brandstof voor milieu (bij de winning)\, klimaat (CO2-uitstoot) en gezondheid (bij verbranding komen PAK’s en fijnstof vrij). Hoewel Nederland nog maar vier kolencentrales heeft\, spelen we een grote rol in de doorvoer van steenkool richting Duitsland en Midden-Europa: zo worden via de havens van Rotterdam en Amsterdam megatonnen steenkool – deels bloedkolen afkomstig uit o.a. Colombia – overgeslagen. Regelmatig blokkeert Kappen met kolen daarom kolentreinen richting Duitsland. Daarnaast richten ze zich op Tata Steel IJmuiden\, een grootverbruiker van steenkool – waarmee ijzer uit ijzererts wordt gewonnen – en de grootste vervuiler en uitstoter van Nederland. Er wordt samen opgetrokken met activisten en actiegroepen uit onder meer Colombia en Duitsland. Kolen hebben in Nederland het kleinste aandeel in de fossiele energiemix maar veroorzaken de grootste schade. DESCRIPTION:Storm Floris was named on 1 August 2025 by the Met Office\, it was also named Ning by Free University of Berlin. \nThis system was expected deliver strong winds and heavy rainfall across the northern half of the country on Monday and early Tuesday the 4 & 5 August. A Yellow wind warning\, issued by the Met Office on Friday\, 1 August\, covered a significant swath of the northern UK. This included Northern Ireland\, north Wales\, northern England\, and the entire expanse of Scotland\, where the most intense winds were anticipated to be recorded. The warning was in effect from 06:00 local time on Monday\, 4 August until 06:00 on Tuesday\, 5 August\, 2025. Many inland areas within this warning zone could experience gusts of 65-80 km/h\, while exposed coastal areas and higher ground in Scotland may see winds reaching 100-120 km/h\, with a small chance of isolated gusts up to 85mph. These conditions\, combined with heavy rain\, could lead to travel disruption\, power cuts\, and potential damage to buildings and trees. In Met Éireann issued yellow wind warnings for north-western counties. \nA day later the Met Office issued an amber wind warning for much of mainland Scotland where gusts were likely to reach 135 to 144 km/h on some exposed coasts\, hills and bridges. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued a yellow wind warning for large parts of Västra Götaland County and southern Värmland County. During Tuesday windy with strong to very strong gusty winds\, locally storm gusts. Flights from Glasgow Airport to the Scottish islands were cancelled on Monday as the west of the country was battered by strong winds. In all\, Aviation analytics company Cirium said 68 flights from UK airports have been cancelled. In Northern Ireland\, several flights have been cancelled and thousands of homes are without power across the rest of the country after Storm Floris arrived overnight. Wachten op de uitslag zorgt ervoor dat de patiënt\, samen met de arts\, de juiste behandeling kan kiezen voor de specifieke vorm van longkanker. Minister Veldkamp heeft inmiddels enkele maatregelen aangekondigd – kleine stapjes vooruit\, zonder twijfel mede zijn ingegeven door de druk van de protesten. Maar: deze maatregelen zijn vooral symbolisch en lang niet voldoende. Terwijl kinderen in Gaza sterven van honger en geweld\, kiest Nederland nog altijd voor kruimels en woorden in plaats van echte\, daadkrachtige actie. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. Ze raken gewond of worden gedood tijdens bijvoorbeeld brandbestrijding\, een auto ongeluk\, verdrinkingsdood\, ongevallen tijdens patrouille. Dat zijn niet de enige risico’s van het mooie beroep Ranger. Sommige slachtoffers zijn onthoofd door stropers of aangevallen door militanten. Steevast blijven de families van de gevallenen met niks achter. The Thin Green Line Foundation is vaak dan hun enige hoop. Deze organisatie biedt financiële hulp aan de families van Rangers die tijdens hun werk werden gedood of gewond raakte. Het uiteindelijke doel is om alle families van de gesneuvelden financieel te kunnen ondersteunen. Want uiteindelijk zijn Rangers de poortwachters van onze natuur en cultuur schatten. The Thin Green Line Foundation biedt spoedeisende financiële hulp\, verzorgt opleidingen en steunt in derde Wereld landen en conflictgebieden Rangers en hun gezinnen financieel. The Green Line Foundation is ook bedoeld om Rangers een betere uitrusting te geven zodat ze meer kans maken om zichzelf te beschermen tegen alle gevaren waar zij mee te maken krijgen. Rangers werken vaak voor een laag loon of krijgen amper erkenning. DESCRIPTION:De aardbeving bij schiereiland Kamtsjatka op 30 juli 2025 om 11:24 (lokale tijd) was een beving met een magnitude 8\,8 op de schaal van Richter\, op 19 kilometer diepte. \nHet epicentrum van de beving lag in open zee op zo’n 130 kilometer van de Russische kust. De aardbeving heeft tot tsunamiwaarschuwingen geleid in onder meer Rusland\, Japan\, de Verenigde Staten\, China\, Hawaï en Ecuador. De hoge golven hebben ook Japan bereikt en in Hawaï waren evacuaties. Er zijn geen slachtoffers gemeld\, wel was er een tsunami die de Russische havenplaats Severo-Koerilsk onder water zette. Er volgden naschokken met een magnitude tot 6\,9. De Kljoetsjevskaja Sopka\, een vulkaan op het schiereiland Kamtsjatka en een van de hoogste vulkanen ter wereld\, barstte uit als gevolg van de beving. Ook de Krasjeninnikov vulkaan op het schiereiland barstte enkele dagen later op 3 augustus 2025 voor het eerst in 475 jaar weer uit. DESCRIPTION:The Scientific Opinion (SO) ‘Welfare of American mink\, red and Arctic foxes\, raccoon dog and chinchilla kept for fur production‘ addresses a mandate from the EC regarding welfare of animals when farmed for their fur. \nThe request was to identify the most relevant welfare consequences (WCs) for each species and to determine whether these could be prevented or substantially mitigated in the current husbandry systems. ‘Current system’ refers strictly to the cage systems and cage dimensions as described in the EFSA Technical report produced under this mandate\, as there was no or very limited information available on animals kept in alternative farming systems. Using information obtained from a review of literature\, consultations with stakeholders and consideration by EFSA experts\, the SO addresses for each species these WCs along with their underlying hazards and potential preventive or mitigating measures. In all species\, Restriction of movement\, Inability to perform exploratory or foraging behaviour\, and Sensorial under- and overstimulation were selected as the most relevant WCs\, sharing common hazards linked to current cage size and barrenness. Species-specific WCs include: soft tissue lesions and integument damage (mink)\, and handling stress (mink and foxes); locomotory disorders (Arctic fox); group stress (red fox)\, locomotory disorders and isolation stress (raccoon dog); and inability to perform comfort behaviour\, resting problems and predation stress (chinchilla). In the majority of cases\, it is concluded that neither prevention nor substantial mitigation of the identified WCs is possible in the current system. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm δ-Cassiopeiïden (naar de ster Delta Cassiopeiae) bereikt op dinsdag 29 juli 2025\, rond 22:00\, zijn maximum. \nWanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 10 meteoren per uur vallen. Rond 06:00 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 79°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om δ-Cassiopeiïden waar te nemen is op 30 juli rond 03:00. De radiant van de zwerm staat dan ongeveer 64° boven de noordoostelijke horizon. Door de matige omstandigheden zijn er in onze streken dan vermoedelijk maar circa 3–7 meteoren per uur van deze zwerm te zien. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 11–18 “vallende sterren” per uur te zien. Op een donkere locatie zijn ongeveer vijf keer zoveel meteoren te zien als in dichtbevolkt gebied. De Maan stoort niet. Rond 05:15 gaat het schemeren en om 05:58 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 5 dagen rondom het maximum meer dan 50% van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur van de δ-Cassiopeiïden te zien. Tot 6 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Er zijn dus nog meer kansen\, voor het geval het in de nacht van het maximum niet helder is. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 20% kleiner. DESCRIPTION:Every year\, this most intensely scrutinized of FAO’s reports presents the headline number of undernourished people around the world\, while advocating for strategies against hunger and malnutrition. \nFollowing publication of the global report ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025‘\, a wealth of statistics is disaggregated into regional reports. SOFI is jointly produced with fellow UN agencies IFAD\, UNICEF\, WFP and WHO. While some progress and recovery have been made in recent years\, the world is still above pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels and far from eradicating hunger and food insecurity by 2030 (SDG Target 2.1). Similarly\, despite some progress in the global nutrition targets\, the world is not on track to achieve SDG Target 2.2. Among other factors\, persistent food price inflation has slowed this momentum.The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 highlights how elevated inflation in many countries has undermined purchasing power and\, especially among low-income populations\, access to healthy diets. The report documents how high food price inflation is associated with increases in food insecurity and child malnutrition. \nVulnerable groups\, including low-income households\, women\, and rural communities\, can be particularly affected by food price inflation\, risking setbacks in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.In response to these challenges and to prevent future price shocks\, the report examines policy measures adopted by countries\, and outlines what is necessary going forwards. It stresses the importance of coherent implementation of fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize markets\, promote open and resilient trade\, and protect vulnerable populations. Additionally\, it calls for better data systems and sustained investment in resilient agrifood systems to build long-term food security and nutrition. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations (UN) High-level conference on two-State solution for Israel and Palestine is a three-day conference\, mandated by the General Assembly through resolutions ES-10/24 and 79/81 and co-organized by France and Saudi Arabia\, brings together Member States\, observers and regional stakeholders. \nThe UN has scheduled a high-level conference on the two-state solution in New York\, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. The conference was originally set to take place on June 17-20\, 2025\, but rescheduled to July 28-29\, 2025. As detailed below\, the original aim of the conference was to obtain recognition of a Palestinian state from UN member states. On July 25\, 2025\, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would recognize a Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly in September. It features plenary discussions and thematic roundtables on issues ranging from security arrangements and humanitarian response to reconstruction and economic viability. This ministerial high-level session brings together the outcomes of the thematic roundtables and working groups convened under the auspices of the High-Level Conference on the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. It provides a platform to consolidate key insights\, highlight consensus across political\, legal\, economic\, and humanitarian tracks\, and articulate concrete next steps.
