DESCRIPTION:The report ‘Pushbacks Report 2025‘ documents pushbacks from EU Member States to third countries in 2025\, highlighting ongoing violations of international and EU law. \nIt draws from NGO reports\, research groups\, human rights organizations\, UN agencies\, government services and interviews with organizations active in Hungary\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Greece\, Poland\, Croatia\, Bulgaria and Romania. In total\, 80\,865 pushbacks were recorded. Overall\, the normalization of pushbacks persists\, requiring stronger enforcement and greater accountability from both Member States and EU institutions. At the same time\, 2025 has witnessed a trend towards externalization of border management. The EU finances third countries to prevent people seeking protection to reach EU borders\, resulting in offshoring human rights violations. The result is an increase in pullbacks and a decrease in pushbacks on certain routes. In 2025\, the Libyan coast guard\, financially and logistically supported by the EU\, prevented 27\,116 people from reaching EU borders. Poland pushed back 14\,754 asylum seekers\, followed by Bulgaria whose authorities have executed 13\,568 pushbacks. DESCRIPTION:At a time when armed conflict has reached historic levels around the world\, journalist killings also reached an all-time high primarily due to the actions of one government: Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025\, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129 — the highest ever number documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) since the organization started keeping records more than three decades ago.\, according to the report ‘Record 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths‘. \nThis marks back-to-back record years for press fatalities due to Israel’s continued and unprecedented targeting of journalists and media workers. More than 60% of the 86 members of the press killed by Israeli fire in 2025 were Palestinians reporting from Gaza\, where human rights groups and U.N. experts agree a genocide is taking place. Over three-quarters of all press deaths in 2025 were in conflict settings. While the number of journalists and media workers killed in Ukraine and Sudan increased slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year\, to four and nine deaths in each country respectively\, the numbers were still very low compared to Israel\, which remains a significant exception. The rising number of journalist deaths globally is fueled by a persistent culture of impunity for attacks on the press: Very few transparent investigations have been conducted into the 47 cases* of targeted killings (classified as “Murder” in CPJ’s longstanding methodology) documented by CPJ in 2025 — the highest number of journalists deliberately killed for their work in the past decade — and no one has been held accountable in any of the cases. These killings of journalists violate international humanitarian law\, which stipulates that journalists are civilians and should never be deliberately targeted. \nThe continued failure of government leaders to protect the press or hold their attackers to account also lays the groundwork for more killings\, including in countries not at war. Journalists were killed in Mexico\, India\, and the Philippines in 2025\, all countries that have persistently failed to secure justice for journalists’ murders. DESCRIPTION:The Gulf stream is moving north – and it could be an early warning sign; while this isn’t “The Day After Tomorrow\,” it’s still cause for concern. \nThe Gulf Stream\, that vital ribbon of warmth surging across the North Atlantic\, appears to be drifting northward. If this trend continues\, it could provide further evidence that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is losing strength and nearing collapse as global temperatures rise. The Gulf Stream is just one piece of the AMOC\, although the two terms are often used interchangeably in casual conversation. The latter is the mother of ocean current systems in the Atlantic\, sometimes known as the “conveyor belt of the ocean\,” that transports warm\, salty water from the tropics northward towards Europe. Meanwhile\, the Gulf Stream is a western boundary current system that’s part of the upper and northward-flowing branch of this oceanic engine. Scientists are becoming increasingly concerned that warming ocean temperatures and melting ice from Greenland could be pushing the AMOC toward a catastrophic standstill. Evidence already indicates a 15 percent reduction in the circulation’s strength since the 1950s\, fueling fears of a total collapse. While this collapse wouldn’t instantly trigger the frozen apocalypse depicted in The Day After Tomorrow\, it would starve Europe of heat\, leading to plummeting temperatures and shifted weather patterns across the hemisphere. However\, researchers have not been certain how the Gulf Stream\, one arm of this beast\, might play a role in the AMOC collapse. \nTo find out\, climatologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands used computer modeling and real-world data to study how two ocean current systems interact. The findings indicate that the movement of the Gulf Stream could be a “canary in the coal mine” for the AMOC’s collapse. According to their analysis of satellite data\, the Gulf Stream has already been nudged northwards from the coast near Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina\, since the early 1990s. This is likely to be the result of the AMOC dwindling and losing its grip. Looking ahead\, the models forecast that further weakening of the AMOC will shift the Gulf Stream even further. At one key longitude (71.5°W)\, the current slowly drifts north by about 133 kilometers over several centuries\, followed by a sudden jump northward of about 219 kilometers within just two years in the model. This abrupt change is much larger than the normal year-to-year variation in the current’s position. In a punchline: the study ‘Abrupt Gulf Stream path changes are a precursor to a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation‘ concludes that a noticeable shift in the Gulf Stream’s position could signal that the AMOC is approaching a tipping point. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de IJsbeer wordt sinds 2011 jaarlijks gehouden op 27 februari om aandacht te vragen voor het leefgebied van de ijsbeer. \nDeze dag wordt georganiseerd door “Polar Bears International” voor de bewustwording van de impact die de wereldwijde opwarming van de Aarde en het zee-ijs heeft op ijsberen. Hieruit volgt dat er aandacht wordt gevraagd om manieren te vinden die de CO2-uitstoot zou kunnen verminderen. Dierentuinen gebruiken deze dag om de bezoeker te informeren over de instandhouding van de ijsbeer-populaties. Men hoopt ook politieke invloed te kunnen uitoefenen. Door klimaatverandering hebben ijsberen het zwaar\, het zee-ijs smelt waardoor hun jacht- en leefgebied langzaam verdwijnt. Maar daar blijft het niet bij. De plekken om jongen te werpen worden dus ook steeds slechter bereikbaar\, ergo minder jonge ijsbeertjes. En als er al jonkies zijn dan zijn overlevingskansen slecht. \nDoordat er minder ijsschotsen zijn worden ijsberen gedwongen om steeds grotere afstanden te zwemmen. Voor volwassen ijsberen geen probleem maar de jonkies houden het vaak niet vol en verdrinken onderweg. De initiator van Dag van de IJsbeer\, Polar Bears International\, vraagt met deze dag om extra aandacht voor de impact van de wereldwijde opwarming van de aarde. Zonder te overdrijven maar zonder zee-ijs zullen er steeds minder ijsberen overblijven\, en dat maakt ze kwetsbaar worden voor uitsterving. De mens is de veroorzaker maar ook de oplosser. \nDoor het verbranden van fossiele brandstoffen brengen koolstofemissies de kwetsbare ecosystemen van de aarde in gevaar\, inclusief die van het Noordpoolgebied. Als we minder fossiele brandstoffen gebruiken als energiebron dan vermindert onze koolstofemissies. Hierdoor kan het broeikaseffect worden vertraagd en zelfs worden gestopt. Het smelten van het zee-ijs behoort dan ook tot het verleden en dat is de redding van de ijsbeer. Ze hebben weer plek om te jongen en kunnen weer efficiënt op zeehonden jagen. Maar het gaat niet alleen om ijsberen. Het VN-rapport over klimaatverandering van 2023 laat verwoestende gevolgen voor mensen zien. Van droogte tot overstromingen tot massale stormen\, tenzij we de koolstofemissies aanzienlijk verminderen. \nLinks:\nPolar Bear Day is February 27!

DESCRIPTION:On 28 February 2026\, Israel and the United States launched a coordinated joint attack on various sites in Iran\, codenamed Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Epic Fury by the US Department of Defense\, targeting military and government sites\, assassinating Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other Iranian officials\, and inflicting civilian casualties. \nThe surprise attacks were launched during negotiations between Iran and the US. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel\, US bases\, and US allies in the Middle East\, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz\, disrupting global trade. After the Middle Eastern crisis began in 2023\, Iran and Israel exchanged missile strikes in 2024\, and again during the Twelve-Day War in June 2025\, which resulted in a US airstrike on Iranian nuclear sites. In January 2026\, Iranian security forces massacred thousands of civilians in their crackdown on the largest Iranian protests since 1979. US president Donald Trump responded by threatening military action and starting the largest US military buildup in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Israeli–US airstrikes damaged military bases\, government buildings\, schools\, hospitals\, and heritage sites. In retaliation\, Iran launched hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel and at US military bases in neighbouring Arab countries including Bahrain\, Jordan\, Kuwait\, Qatar\, Saudi Arabia\, and the United Arab Emirates. Iran and its proxies launched strikes on Iraq’s Kurdistan. A drone struck Britain’s Akrotiri military base on Cyprus\, and missiles were shot down over Turkey. Civilian infrastructure was struck\, including in Oman and Azerbaijan. Iran denied attacking Azerbaijan\, Oman\, and Turkey\, saying they were false-flag attacks. The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel escalated into the 2026 Lebanon war\, killing more than 2\,000 civilians and militants. The Trump administration gave diverse and changing explanations for starting the war: to forestall Iranian retaliation after an expected Israeli attack\, to stop an imminent Iranian threat\, to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities\, to prevent Iran building a nuclear weapon\, to seize Iran’s oil resources\, and to achieve regime change by bringing the Iranian opposition to power. Iranian and some US officials rejected claims that Iran had been preparing an attack. \nThe International Atomic Energy Agency said that while Iran has an “ambitious” nuclear program and refused to allow inspections of its damaged sites after the 2025 war\, there was no evidence of an ongoing nuclear weapons program. United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres and several uninvolved countries condemned the US–Israeli strikes; the UN Security Council passed a resolution condemning Iran’s retaliatory strikes on the Gulf states. Critics of the war\, including legal and international relations experts\, described the US attacks as illegal under US law and a violation of Iran’s sovereignty under international law. The war’s economic impact includes the world’s biggest oil supply disruption since the 1970s energy crisis\, surges in oil and gas prices\, disruptions in aviation and tourism\, and volatility in financial markets. Oil and gas shipments were disrupted by Iran’s closure of the Hormuz Strait and Israeli and Iranian attacks on energy facilities. On 19 March\, the cost of the war to the US military was estimated at US$18 billion\, and the Pentagon requested a further US$200 billion. By 31 March\, the cost to Arab countries was estimated at over US$120 billion. Covering only 0.1% of the ocean floor\, these seagrass meadows provide food and shelter to thousands of species of fish\, seahorses\, turtles\, etc. and sustain some of the world’s largest fisheries. They improve water quality by filtering\, cycling and storing nutrients and pollutants\, reducing contamination in seafood. Highly efficient carbon sinks\, they can store up to 18% of the world’s oceanic carbon\, making them a powerful nature-based solutions to tackle climate change impacts. Because they buffer ocean acidification\, they contribute to the resilience of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species\, such as coral reefs. And to the coastal populations\, they act as the first line of defense along coasts by reducing wave energy\, protecting people from the increasing risk of floods and storms. Despite its important contribution to sustainable development and climate change mitigation and adaptation\, this core component of marine biodiversity is in danger and only about a quarter of all meadows fall within marine protected areas. \nSeagrasses have been declining globally since the 1930s\, with the most recent census estimating that 7% of this key marine habitat is being lost worldwide per year. It was recently noted that 21% of seagrass species are categorized as Near Threatened\, Vulnerable and Endangered Species under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The combined pressures of coastal development\, pollution\, including land-based run-off\, climate change\, dredging and unregulated fishing and boating activities are key drivers of the degradation of seagrasses and their associated ecosystems. Despite a general global trend of seagrass loss\, some areas have shown abating declines or substantial recovery of seagrasses. These recoveries can often be attributed to human interventions reducing the effect of human-caused stressors. Seagrasses are critical for life underwater\, but also provide wide-ranging benefits to people on land. Raising awareness about their importance for community well-being\, whether through food security from fish production\, improved quality of water filtered by seagrasses\, protection of coasts from erosion\, storms and floods\, or carbon sequestration and storage will drive efforts around the world to conserve\, better manage and restore these ecosystems. Ultimately\, the protection and restoration of seagrass meadows will help countries achieve multiple economic\, societal and nutritional objectives\, aligning with and supported by policies implemented at the national\, regional or global levels. For example: \n\nThe benefits from conserving and restoring seagrass meadows can also help countries achieve 26 targets and indicators associated with ten Sustainable Development Goals.\nGiven the carbon storage and sequestration capacity of seagrass ecosystems\, including them in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) can help nations achieve their targets under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).\nInclusion of seagrass ecosystems in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)  is also critical for protecting the integrity of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.\nRestoration of seagrasses also provides countries with opportunities to achieve commitments to be made to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration .\n\nInclusion of seagrass management\, conservation and restoration should be a critical component of sustainable blue economy strategies in the future. Projects are already underway in various countries\, and a few have even been selected as World Restoration Flagships initiatives. Chosen as best examples of large-scale and long-term ecosystem restoration\, these projects embody the 10 restoration principles  of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

DESCRIPTION:Self-injury Awareness Day (SIAD) (also known as Self-Harm Awareness Day) is a grassroots annual global awareness event / campaign on March 1\, where on this day\, and in the weeks leading up to it and after\, some people choose to be more open about their own self-harm\, and awareness organizations make special efforts to raise awareness about self-harm and self-injury. \nSome people wear an orange awareness ribbon\, write “LOVE” on their arms\, draw a butterfly on their wrists in awareness of “the Butterfly Project” wristband or beaded bracelet to encourage awareness of self-harm. The goal of the people who observe SIAD is to break down the common stereotypes surrounding self-harm and to educate medical professionals about the condition. \nLinks:\nSelf Harm Awareness Day

DESCRIPTION:Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations\, the day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. \nThe day was first celebrated on March 1\, 2014\, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing. In February 2017\, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination\, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions\, goals and dreams.” The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”\, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor\, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination. Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely\, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code\, s377) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country\, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018. In 2015\, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. \nIn 2026 is the theme ‘People first‘. \nLinks:\nZero Discrimination Day
