The General Assembly resolution affirms that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels to all learners\, especially those in vulnerable situations. It further emphasizes the need to intensify efforts and increase funding to promote safe and protective school environments in humanitarian emergencies by taking all feasible measures to protect schools\, learners and educational personnel from attack\, refrain from actions that impede children’s access to education\, and facilitate access to education in situations of armed conflict. UNESCO and UNICEF will facilitate the annual observance of the Day in close collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system. DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. Beginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nThe team explores one of the greatest discoveries of modern astronomy – that our universe is expanding – and the new questions it raises about how the cosmos works. \nIn the 1920s\, astronomers studying galaxies realised they were moving away from us\, with the most distant ones receding the fastest. The\nconclusion was revolutionary: space itself was stretching\, and the universe was expanding in every direction. But once this discovery was made\, a new challenge emerged – how fast is the universe expanding\, and what could that tell us about its age\, size and ultimate fate? \nChris Lintott travels to the University of Oxford to explore one of the most extraordinary tools astronomers use to answer these questions – the cosmic microwave background (CMB)\, the faint afterglow of the Big Bang. Working with Professor David Alonso\, Chris learns how scientists use the CMB as a starting point for measuring cosmic expansion. He discovers how the Simons Observatory\, a network of telescopes in Chile\, is creating the sharpest map yet of this ancient light. The Vera Rubin Observatory\, with its enormous mirror and world-record-breaking camera\, is about to survey the southern skies\, capturing supernovae in unprecedented numbers. With its data\, astronomers hope to refine how fast the universe’s expansion has accelerated over billions of years. \nGeorge Dransfield takes on the most mysterious part of the story – dark energy. Coined to explain the force driving the acceleration\, dark energy remains entirely unknown. At the University of Portsmouth\, George meets Dr Seshadri Nadathur\, who is part of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. By mapping tens of millions of galaxies across 11 billion years of cosmic history\, DESI is building the largest 3D map of the universe ever made. This map is revealing subtle patterns in how galaxies are distributed\, providing new insights into how fast the universe has expanded over time – and whether dark energy itself has changed throughout cosmic history. Together\, these projects reveal both the power and the limits of our current models of cosmology. Vele partners\, bedrijven\, gemeenten en organisaties organiseren activiteiten tijdens de Week van lezen en schrijven. Van theatervoorstellingen tot open inloopdagen. En van puzzeltochten tot het uitdelen van letterkoekjes. En ook lokale radiostations zetten zich ervoor in. Dit jaar doen veel lokale radiostations mee met de Week van lezen en schrijven. Ervaringsdeskundigen van Stichting ABC en adviseurs van Stichting Lezen en Schrijven worden in het hele land bevraagd door plaatselijke programmamakers. We zijn blij met die betrokkenheid\, want uit onderzoek blijkt dat mensen die moeite hebben met lezen graag naar lokale radio luisteren om op de hoogte te blijven van wat er in hun regio speelt. In Nederland hebben 3 miljoen mensen van 16 tot en met 75 jaar moeite met lezen\, schrijven en/of rekenen. In Nederland overlijden gemiddeld 5 mensen per dag door suïcide. Dit cijfer krijgen we alleen samen omlaag. Praten over zelfdoding en het vinden van woorden is niet altijd even makkelijk\, maar kan het verschil maken voor iemand die kampt met suïcidale gedachten. Hoe start je zo’n gesprek? Welke woorden gebruik je? Dat is best even zoeken. Daarom roept 113 iedereen deze week op: ga op zoek naar woorden en start het gesprek over zelfdoding. Meer dan 500 organisaties omarmen het thema ‘Op zoek naar woorden’ en maken deze week suïcidepreventie zichtbaar. At the same time\, 4 in 10 children are not reaching minimum proficiency in reading\, and 272 million children and adolescents were out of school in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nHet seizoen najaar 2025 opent op 7 september met een bezoek aan het Zuidlaardermeer in Groningen\, waar zeldzame witwangsterns en steltkluten gefilmd worden. Het team reist af naar het noorden van het land voor een bezoek aan het Zuidlaardermeer\, een prachtig landschap waar water de hoofdrol speelt. Tussen steltkluten\, grutto’s en andere vogels bevindt zich een broedkolonie witwangsterns\, een zeldzaamheid in Nederland. Gekleed in waadpakken onderzoekt het team het verborgen leven in het water. Ook zien ze wat rietherstel doet voor de roerdomp en bezoeken ze de Harener Wildernis\, waar bijzondere planten floreren. DESCRIPTION:In de avond van zondag 7 september 2025 vindt een totale maansverduistering plaats\, de Maan beweegt zich door de schaduw van de Aarde\, zodat er geen direct zonlicht meer op het maanoppervlak valt en de hele Maan veel donkerder is dan normaal. \nVanuit Nederland en België is het grootste gedeelte van de eclips zichtbaar\, maar het begin moeten wij missen. De verduistering heeft een grootte van maar liefst 1.37 in de kernschaduw\, wat betekent dat de Maan zich dicht bij het centrum van de aardschaduw bevindt en sterk verduisterd wordt. De eclips begint om 17:28 en staat bij het maximum\, om 20:12\, op een hoogte van circa 0° (in Utrecht). De eclips eindigt om 22:57. Een totale maansverduistering kan erg indrukwekkend zijn. Tijdens de totaliteit\, die duurt van 19:31 tot 20:54\, bevindt de Maan zich volledig in de kernschaduw van de Aarde en valt er geen direct zonlicht meer op de Maan. Echter\, een beetje zonlicht valt door de aardatmosfeer en wordt gebroken\, waardoor dit het maanoppervlak alsnog kan bereiken. Dit is met name rood licht\, waardoor er een rode gloed over de Maan komt. Deze fase wordt in de volksmond ook wel Bloedmaan genoemd\, en duurt bij deze eclips circa 83 minuten. We worden alleen geboren\, we sterven alleen\, en daartussenin proberen we te begrijpen wat het betekent om er überhaupt te zijn. In een werkplaats\, half sterrenwacht\, half sciencefiction-decor\, bouwt sterrenkundige Casper Farret Jentink met Zwitserse precisie instrumenten die het licht van verre sterren tot op vijf siliciumatomen nauwkeurig kunnen meten\, op zoek naar een tweede aarde. Exoplaneten\, planeten die draaien om een andere ster dan de zon\, zijn onzichtbaar voor het oog\, maar traceerbaar via de dure speeltjes van onder andere Jentink. Er werden er al duizenden gevonden\, maar geen enkele zoals onze eigen aarde. Jentink is vastbesloten daar verandering in te brengen\, via zelfgebouwde instrumenten met namen als Ristretto en Espresso. Want als we leven vinden\, of juist niet\, zegt dat iets over onszelf. Zijn we een uniek en kwetsbaar kosmisch toeval? Of zijn we een van de velen\, omdat het leven ondanks alle uitdagingen taai en volhardend is. Every year\, air pollution kills 8.1 million people. From the moment we’re born\, we are in a race for clean air — but right now\, we’re falling behind. 93% of the world’s children breathe air that harms their development. Harm starts before birth\, and it never really stops. We’re all in this race. And the clock is ticking. This Clean Air Day\, join the call for change. Clean air is not a privilege\, it’s a human right. Our first contact with the world. What we inhale 12 times a minute. It keeps us alive or poisons us. 99% of us breathe polluted air. We can’t take it anymore. Air pollution is the biggest environmental health risk of our time. It also exacerbates climate change\, causes economic losses\, and reduces agricultural productivity. It knows no borders – everyone has a responsibility to protect our atmosphere and ensure healthy air for all. By collaborating across borders\, sectors\, and silos\, we can reduce air pollution through collective investments of time\, resources\, and efforts. \nParticularly in developing countries\, air pollution disproportionately affects women\, children and the elderly\, especially in low-income populations as they are often exposed to high levels of ambient air pollution and indoor air pollution from cooking and heating with wood fuel and kerosene. Аir pollution is a global problem with far-reaching impacts owing to its transport over long distances. In the absence of aggressive intervention\, the number of premature deaths resulting from ambient air pollution is estimated to be on track to increase by more than 50 per cent by 2050. Society bears a high cost of air pollution due to the negative impacts on the economy\, work productivity\, healthcare costs and tourism\, among others. Hence\, the economic benefits of investing in air pollution control cannot be overestimated\, and it must be understood that there is also an economic rationale to act and that cost-effective solutions exist to address air pollution. \nPoor air quality is a challenge in the context of sustainable development for all countries\, in particular in cities and urban areas in developing countries\, with levels of air pollution that are higher than the limits set out in the World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Some air pollutants\, such as black carbon\, methane and ground-level ozone\, are also short-lived climate pollutants and are responsible for a significant portion of air pollution-related deaths\, as well as impacts on crops and hence food security\, so their reduction has co-benefits for the climate. UN Member States recognize the need to substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air\, water and soil pollution and contamination by 2030\, as well as to reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities\, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management by 2030. \nClean air is important for the health and day-to-day lives of people\, while air pollution is the single greatest environmental risk to human health and one of the main avoidable causes of death and disease globally. Air pollution disproportionately affects women\, children and older persons\, and also has a negative impact on ecosystems. Today\, the international community acknowledges that improving air quality can enhance climate change mitigation and that climate change mitigation efforts can improve air quality. Encouraged by the increasing interest of the international community in clean air\, and emphasizing the need to make further efforts to improve air quality\, including reducing air pollution\, to protect human health\, the General Assembly decided to designate 7 September as the Day of Clean Air for blue skies. \nLinks:\nDay of Clean Air for blue skies

DESCRIPTION:Meer Democratie\, Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten en de Nederlandse Democratie Coalitie organiseren de eerste landelijke conferentie over het lokale referendum. \nRaadsleden\, wethouders\, initiatiefnemers\, referendumcommissies en wetenschappers komen samen om ervaringen die in de laatste tien jaar zijn opgedaan uit te wisselen\, op een rij te zetten\, er lessen uit trekken en te komen tot nieuwe aanbevelingen voor een goed lokaal referendum op zoveel mogelijk plaatsen in Nederland. De conferentie wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de gemeente Amsterdam. Te vaak haken burgers af door een gevoel van machteloosheid over ons democratisch systeem. Veel inwoners ervaren weinig invloed op het beleid. Dit wordt al langere tijd gezien als problematisch voor de legitimatie van het lokale bestuur. Een van de strategieën om burgers meer zeggenschap te geven en het lokaal bestuur meer legitimiteit te verschaffen\, is het inzetten van het referendum. Immers\, via een referendum kunnen kiezers direct stemmen over onderwerpen die zij belangrijk vinden. Een ruime meerderheid van de Nederlanders is voorstander van het lokale referendum (71% volgens I&O research). Toch heeft nog maar een beperkt aantal gemeenten een referendumverordening of ontstaat er onvrede over hoe de uitslag wordt nageleefd. Uit tal van onderzoeken blijkt dat het referendum\, mits goed uitgevoerd\, het gevoel van machteloosheid en vervreemding vermindert.
