DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. No one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. Of we nu wit\, zwart\, nieuwkomer of hier geboren zijn\, de meesten van ons willen hetzelfde: een betaalbaar huis\, goede zorg en een mooie toekomst voor onze kinderen. Maar politici zoals Wilders en Yesilgöz\, gesteund door rijke donateurs\, brengen dat in gevaar. Ze maken betaalbaar bouwen onmogelijk en breken onze zorg af. Grote bedrijven kiezen winst boven ons klimaat en vervuilen onze lucht en water. Boodschappen worden elke dag duurder\, terwijl de allerrijksten van ons land weigeren om eerlijk bij te dragen aan onze belastingen. De schuld van deze problemen schuiven ze af op minderheden\, migranten en mensen zonder papieren. Deze haatzaaiers maken onze democratie zwakker en proberen ons te verdelen\, omdat ze weten: samen zijn wij sterker dan zij. Want als we onze verschillen overbruggen\, kunnen we een Nederland bouwen waar iedereen meetelt. Betaalbare huizen\, eerlijke lonen\, een gezonde leefomgeving: het ligt binnen handbereik. Kom in actie. Word #Hoopzaaier. \nVorige generaties hebben samen gestreden voor onze verzorgingsstaat\, voor een inperking van de werkweek\, tegen kinderarbeid en voor het kiesrecht voor vrouwen\, om maar eens wat te noemen. Nu is het onze beurt om samen vooruit te gaan en ons niet langer te laten verdelen. DESCRIPTION:De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon. \nZonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie\, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties\, Vaticaanstad\, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn. DESCRIPTION:The International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) is an opportunity for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) students to showcase their research to the rest of the community. \nProjects are judged by prestigious scientists and Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Mathematics (STEM) professionals across dozens of GLOBE nations. Students are eligible for GLOBE badges. Students may submit a project on any topic\, but they are encouraged to align their research with the year’s theme\, in 2025 “30 Years of GLOBE: Understanding the Past\, Present\, and Future.” Students from across all 127 member countries take up the challenge of doing their own research using GLOBE Protocols and accessing and analyzing data from the NASA GLOBE Database as part of their IVSS project. DESCRIPTION:Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the mouth\, nose\, throat\, larynx\, sinuses\, or salivary glands. \nSymptoms for head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal\, a sore throat that does not go away\, trouble swallowing\, or a change in the voice; there may also be unusual bleeding\, facial swelling\, or trouble breathing. About 75% of head and neck cancer is caused by the use of alcohol or tobacco. Other risk factors include betel quid\, certain types of human papillomavirus\, radiation exposure\, certain workplace exposures\, and Epstein-Barr virus. Head and neck cancers are most commonly of the squamous cell carcinoma type. The diagnosis is confirmed by tissue biopsy. The degree of spread may be determined by medical imaging and blood tests. Not using tobacco or alcohol can reduce the risk for head and neck cancer. While screening in the general population does not appear to be useful\, screening high risk groups by examination of the throat might be useful. \nHead and neck cancer often is curable if it is diagnosed early; however\, outcomes are typically poor if it is diagnosed late. Treatment may include a combination of surgery\, radiation therapy\, chemotherapy\, and targeted therapy. Following treatment of one head and neck cancer\, people are at higher risk of having a second cancer. In 2015\, head and neck cancers globally affected more than 5.5 million people (2.4 million mouth\, 1.7 million throat\, and 1.4 million larynx cancer)\, and it has caused over 379\,000 deaths (146\,000 mouth\, 127\,400 throat\, 105\,900 larynx cancer). Together\, they are the seventh most-frequent cancer and the ninth most-frequent cause of death from cancer. In the United States\, about 1% of people are affected at some point in their life\, and males are affected twice as often as females. The usual age at diagnosis is between 55 and 65 years old. De mensen van 25 jaar en ouder zullen dit\, en de gevolgen hiervan\, zich nog zeer levendig kunnen herinneren. Als je meedoet aan deze werelddag dan is het de bedoeling dat jij aan een wildvreemde 2 munten of biljetten geeft en hen vraagt om de helft door te geven aan iemand anders. Free Money Day kun je zien als een sociaal experiment; wat gebeurt er als je geld aanbiedt aan mensen die je niet kent. In de vroege ochtend zien ze reeën die aan het grazen zijn langs de bosranden\, terwijl de hazen voorbij schieten. Dit voormalige vliegveld heeft dankzij de rust en heischrale graslanden een enorme rijkdom aan insecten en zeldzame planten. Naast de voormalige munitiebunkers liggen blusvijvers\, waar talloze libellen vliegen\, groene kikkers kwaken en ringslangen zwemmen. Nieuwe\, torenhoge importtarieven zouden vanaf dat moment gelden voor staal\, halfgeleiders\, elektrische auto’s en een reeks consumentengoederen uit China en Europa. “From now on\,” riep hij\, “we build\, we buy\, we win at home.” De reacties waren onmiddellijk en wereldwijd voelbaar. In Beijing sprak de regering van een “economische oorlogsverklaring.” Europese leiders riepen spoedoverleggen bijeen om een gezamenlijk antwoord te formuleren\, terwijl beursvloeren van Frankfurt tot Seoul rood kleurden. De afgelopen maanden is duidelijk geworden dat de globalisering die onze wereld decennialang heeft vormgegeven\, scheuren vertoont. Trump heeft de tarieven opnieuw fors verhoogd: staal\, halfgeleiders\, elektrische auto’s – niets ontsnapt aan zijn handelsoorlog. DESCRIPTION:Open Monumentendagen worden in Europese landen jaarlijks georganiseerd in de maand september\, gewoonlijk niet vrij toegankelijke monumenten worden dan gedurende een of meer dagen opengesteld voor publiek. \nDe Europese Open Monumentendagen vonden voor het eerst plaats in 1991. Daarvoor waren er al lokale initiatieven: in 1984 vond in Frankrijk de eerste Journée Portes Ouvertes plaats\, en in Nederland was de eerste Open Monumentendag in 1987. Vlaanderen volgde in 1989. Naar aanleiding van het succes van de Franse en Nederlandse dagen\, organiseerde het Comité voor Cultureel Erfgoed van de Raad van Europa in 1989 een internationale bijeenkomst\, waarbij overleg plaatsvond over eventuele Europese Open Monumentendagen. De plannen die tijdens deze bijeenkomst bedacht zijn\, werden door de Raad van Europa en de Nederlandse Stichting Open Monumentendag verder uitgewerkt. Dit leidde tot de eerste European Heritage Days in 1991. In dat jaar deden er elf landen mee\, in 2005 waren het er 47. In 2017 waren er vijftig staten die de Europese Culturele Conventie ondertekenden aangesloten bij European Heritage Days en er werden 70.000 georganiseerd. Naast het openstellen van gebouwen worden er activiteiten georganiseerd voor jong en oud\, zoals wandelingen\, fietstochten\, boottochten en lezingen. \nHet thema voor 2025 is “Erfgoed & Architectuur – Gebouw(d) om te blijven”. In 1975 riep de Raad van Europa het jaar uit tot het “Europese Jaar van het Architectonisch Erfgoed”. Dit initiatief hielp om architectuur te erkennen als een belangrijk onderdeel van onze leefomgeving. Het stimuleerde de zorg voor historische gebouwen in heel Europa\, waardoor de basis werd gelegd voor de monumentenzorg zoals we die nu kennen. Precies vijftig jaar later\, tijdens Open Monumentendag 2025\, wordt stilgestaan bij dit bijzondere jubileum en wordt het architectonische erfgoed van Nederland in de schijnwerpers gezet. De slogan ‘Gebouw(d) om te blijven’ benadrukt de waarde van de verscheidenheid aan historische gebouwen die ons land verrijken en nodigt uit om na te denken over de toekomst van dit erfgoed. Architectuur is meer dan bakstenen en beton. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP or DOTROIP) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday\, September 13\, 2007\, by a majority of 144 states in favour\, 4 votes against\, and 11 abstentions. \nThe groundwork toward this declaration began in 1923 and 1925 with the works of Haudenosaunee Chief Deskaheh and Māori T.W. Ratana\, who attempted to bring issues of Canada and New Zealand’s failure to uphold treaties to the League of Nations\, United Nations’ precursor. In May 2016\, Canada officially removed its objector status to UNDRIP\, almost a decade after it was adopted by the General Assembly. By now the other three objectors have\, to varying degrees\, also turned their votes. As a General Assembly Declaration\, UNDRIP is not a legally binding instrument under international law. According to a UN press release it does “represent the dynamic development of international legal norms and it reflects the commitment of the UN’s member states to move in certain directions”; the UN describes it as setting “an important standard for the treatment of indigenous peoples that will undoubtedly be a significant tool toward eliminating human rights violations against the planet’s 370 million indigenous people\, and assisting them in combating discrimination and marginalisation.” UNDRIP codifies “Indigenous historical grievances\, contemporary challenges and socio-economic\, political and cultural aspirations” and is the “culmination of generations-long efforts by Indigenous organizations to get international attention\, to secure recognition for their aspirations\, and to generate support for their political agendas.” Canada Research Chair and faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan Ken Coates argues that UNDRIP resonates powerfully with Indigenous peoples\, while national governments have not yet fully understood its impact. \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
