Dit gebeurt door eenzaamheid te agenderen\, bespreekbaar te maken en mensen meer bewust te maken van het thema. Zodat meer mensen in actie komen om eenzaamheid te voorkomen en verminderen\, voor zichzelf of een ander. Verbinding staat centraal. Iedereen kan deelnemen aan de Week tegen Eenzaamheid door het organiseren of bezoeken van een activiteit. Of door gewoon iets met iemand in je omgeving te doen. Eenzaamheid is het gevoel alleen te zijn\, van geïsoleerd te zijn van ‘de anderen’. Onderzoekers omschrijven eenzaamheid als het ervaren verschil tussen gewenste en aanwezige contacten. Op deze definitie van socioloog Jenny de Jong Gierveld is veel onderzoek naar het vóórkomen van eenzaamheid gebaseerd. In Nederland wordt deze definitie al jarenlang als grondslag gebruikt voor het meten van de mate van eenzaamheid in de bevolking\, de zg. prevalentie. Er zijn veel verschillende definities van eenzaamheid in omloop. DESCRIPTION:De gemeente Amsterdam gaat de organisatie de komende jaren veranderen\, dat is nodig om beter aan te sluiten bij de uitdagingen van de stad en de behoeften van Amsterdammers. \nHet college van burgemeester en wethouders (B&W) schrijft dit in een brief aan de gemeenteraad. De kern van de brief van het college: er gaat eenvoudiger gewerkt worden\, met meer ruimte voor de uitvoering\, duidelijke prioriteiten\, haalbare doelen en een veilige werkplek. Amsterdam groeit en staat voor grote opgaven\, zoals: \n\nhet tegengaan van armoede\nhet aanpakken van woningnood\nhet verbeteren van de openbare ruimte\n\nTegelijk krijgt de gemeente meer taken van het Rijk\, vaak zonder extra middelen. Dat zet de uitvoering onder druk. Haar medewerkers zetten zich elke dag in voor de stad. Toch voelen veel Amsterdammers zich te weinig geholpen\, gezien of gehoord. Ook ziet B&W dat de organisatie te ingewikkeld is geworden\, het ziekteverzuim te hoog en te veel medewerkers ervaren onveiligheid en discriminatie. Daarom is een fundamentele verandering nodig. De komende maanden nemen we onder andere meer maatregelen om het ziekteverzuim terug te dringen en leiderschap te versterken. Tegelijk wordt gewerkt aan plannen voor de veranderingen en worden voorstellen voorbereid waar de nieuwe gemeenteraad en het nieuwe college van B&W na de verkiezingen in maart besluiten over kunnen nemen. Dit proces wordt begeleid door Tijs van Lieshout\, commandant van de brandweer en directeur van de Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland. Hij kent de gemeente goed\, maar is ook voldoende onafhankelijk om moeilijke maatregelen voor te stellen. De inspecties vinden dat stevig leiderschap nodig is van bestuurders\, gemeenten en Rijksoverheid. Met twee minuten stilte herdenking de slachtoffers aan beide kanten. Luisteren naar een update over de stand van zaken aan het front. Na afloop samen “Dona Nobis Pacem – Geef Ons Vrede” zingen. Guido van Leemput – schrijver van ‘De gelaagde oorlog’ en medeoprichter van Stop de Oorlog Amsterdam – geeft zijn maandelijkse analyse van de situatie aan het front én de onderhandelingstafels. Nog niet eerder was een einde van het massale bloedvergieten zo dichtbij. Komt er een vrede in het belang van de Oekraïense en Russische bevolking? Of kijken we naar oligarchen en kapitalisten die op een nietsontziende manier de wereld opnieuw aan het verdelen zijn? De bijeenkomsten op het Spui worden live uitgezonden door Radio Patapoe. DESCRIPTION:De Kinderombudsman presenteert het rapport “Opgroeien in onzekerheid. Wat kinderen in armoede ons in de afgelopen 10 jaar hebben verteld over hun leven en welzijn”\, de conclusie is onmiskenbaar: ondanks talloze initiatieven als schoolontbijten\, laptops en sportabonnementen\, blijft het welzijn en de ontwikkeling van kinderen die in armoede opgroeien\, ernstig onder druk staan. \nHet rapport is gebaseerd op data uit het onderzoek ‘Als je het ons vraagt’\, dat tussen 2016 en 2024 vijf keer is uitgevoerd. In totaal deden 9.809 kinderen van 8 tot 18 jaar mee\, van wie 628 kinderen aangaven dat er te weinig geld thuis is. Het onderzoek brengt de kwaliteit van leven in kaart aan de hand van veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden binnen en buiten het gezin\, aangevuld met een rapportcijfer dat kinderen hun eigen leven gaven. In Nederland leeft één op de 28 kinderen in armoede. Dat betekent dat gemiddeld één kind per klas zich zorgen maakt over de (geld)stress van hun ouders\, schooluitjes\, sport\, eten of zelfs de huur. Deze kinderen starten hun leven met een achterstand. Hun ontwikkeling komt onder grote druk te staan door voortdurende stress\, te weinig aandacht thuis en een gebrek aan kansen. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat kinderen die hun leven een rapportcijfer van vijf of lager geven\, ongekend laag scoren op een aantal van de veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden die voor hun ontwikkeling van cruciaal belang zijn. Dit betekent dat hun kwaliteit van leven zo laag is dat hun welzijn en toekomstkansen ernstig in gevaar komen. \nHet rapport laat daarmee zien dat kinderrechten voor deze kinderen in armoede zwaar onder druk staan. De Kinderombudsman roept de demissionair staatssecretaris van Sociale Zaken én de politiek als geheel dringend op om armoede onder kinderen voortvarender aan te pakken. Het Rijk moet gemeenten duidelijke en inhoudelijke richting geven hierover. Dat kan door het Kinderrechtenverdrag als basis te nemen en dit te vertalen naar beleid dat alle levensgebieden van kinderen omvat volgens de veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden. Alleen zo voorkomen we dat gemeenten ieder hun eigen aanpak en prioriteiten kiezen\, met als risico dat kinderen in de ene gemeente wél kansen krijgen\, en in de andere niet. Pas dan pak je kinderarmoede écht aan. Het is tijd dus om de echte opgave onder ogen te zien: losse voorzieningen zijn waardevol\, maar lossen de kern van het probleem niet op. Alleen met de combinatie van lange termijnoplossingen en losse voorzieningen\, kan worden voorkomen dat duizenden kinderen in Nederland hun jeugd doorbrengen in voortdurende onzekerheid. \nLinks:\nKinderen in armoede zien hun toekomst somber in

Established by Dian Fossey\, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation\, protection\, and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. There are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival\, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas. World Gorilla Day strives to be a rallying point for bolstering appreciation and action for these great apes. On the 8th anniversary of World Gorilla Day\, there is much to celebrate as a community and thank the good work of partner organizations and individuals working around the world to make a difference for gorillas. SUMMARY:Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1
DESCRIPTION:Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) is a spacecraft mission planned to monitor signs of solar storms\, which may pose harm to Earth’s telecommunication network. \nThe spacecraft will be operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, with launch scheduled for no earlier than September 23\, 2025. It is planned to be placed at the Sun–Earth L1 Lagrange point\, a location between the Earth and the Sun. This will allow SWFO-L1 to continuously watch the solar wind and energetic particles heading for Earth. SWFO-L1 is an ESPA Class Spacecraft\, sized for launch on an Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) Grande ring in addition to the rocket’s primary payload. The spacecraft’s Solar Wind Instrument Suite (SWIS) which includes three instruments will monitor solar wind\, and the Compact Coronagraph (CCOR) will monitor the Sun’s surroundings to image coronal mass ejection (CME). A CME is a large outburst of plasma sent from the Sun towards interplanetary space. Together with space weather observation capabilities on the Earth-orbiting GOES-U satellite\, SWFO-L1 constitutes the space segment of NOAA’s Space Weather Follow On (SWFO) program. The aim of the SWFO program is to ensure the robust continuity of space-based measurement of the critical space weather environment. All of the spacecraft located in L1 which are currently monitoring CMEs and the solar wind have operated beyond their design lifetime. SWFO-L1‘s SWIS instruments will replace ACE’s and DSCOVR’s monitoring of solar wind\, energetic particles and the interplanetary magnetic field while CCOR will replace SOHO’s LASCO (Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph) imaging of CMEs. \nLinks:\nSpace Weather Follow On L1 Mission

DESCRIPTION:The Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September to recognise that deaf people have our own communities\, our own cultures\, our own languages\, sign languages\, which unite them all. \nThe United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution A/RES/72/161 establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language\, including quality education available in sign language\, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities. In 2018\, it was celebrated together with the official International Day of Sign Languages\, declared by the United Nations (UN)\, for the first time. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)\, its national associations\, and their affiliates all over the world observe International Week of the Deaf from Monday through Sunday\, culminating in International Day of the Deaf on the final Sunday of the week. In order to commemorate International Week of the Deaf\, the WFD invites its national associations and their affiliates to center their celebrations on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages. With this emphasis\, deaf culture and the accomplishments of deaf people are highlighted more and are positively portrayed. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nHet Vroege Vogels team bezoekt natuurgebied de Lemelerberg waar koninginnenpages op zoek gaan naar hun partners. Deze grote vlinders zoeken tijdens hun voortplanting graag de hoogte op. In de zinderende hitte ziet het team hoe de bijenwolf en zijn grote vijand de goudwesp gebruik maken van de steile zandranden. Als de avond valt jaagt de nachtzwaluw over de heide. Ook komt de grote wolfsklauw in beeld\, een prehistorisch plantje dat onlangs in dit gebied is herontdekt. Door de uitbreiding en het herstel van de heide hebben deze bijzondere soorten de afgelopen jaren meer ruimte gekregen om te groeien. Onder aan de hoge droge Lemelerberg ligt het natte dal van de Beneden Regge. Net als op de berg is in dit gebied\, de Archemermaten\, de afgelopen jaren de natuur hersteld. DESCRIPTION:Tolkien Week is observed as the calendar week\, starting on Sunday\, containing September 22\, which is always observed as Hobbit Day. \nBoth celebrations began in 1978. Hobbit Day in particular\, and Tolkien Week as well\, have gained some measure of legal dignity through a variety of proclamations\, declarations\, tributes and similar governmental documents prepared by elected officials who support the Society\, its goals and the observance of these holidays. Both events have attracted bipartisan support\, from the county courthouse to the White House and U.S. Capitol. Tolkien Week honors J. R. R. Tolkien and his son and editor\, Christopher J.R. Tolkien\, and celebrates the Middle-earth cycle: The Silmarillion\, The Hobbit\, The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring\, The Two Towers\, The Return of the King)\, Unfinished Tales\, and The History of Middle-earth. \nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week fall during the “Back to School” season and can create a bright new interest for students in literature classes and libraries. A number of schools and libraries host seminars and art shows during the week. Those with the facilities and budget sometimes arrange for a showing of one or more of the motion pictures based on the works. A few have even presented marathon showings of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films! \nThe most popular method of observing Tolkien Week is the library\, bookstore or school display.  Most libraries have bulletin boards or cases\, and some have enclosed display tables and other facilities up to and including display windows of considerable size. Many librarians among our members and friends create displays; other members contact their libraries and assist in preparing displays. The same is certainly true of schools. Tolkien Week displays and seminars have been held in places ranging from distinguished universities to libraries located in prisons\, mental institutions\, and army bases.  If your activities include presentation of research papers or other materials suitable for publication\, please consider submitting the available works to the Society for possible publication in Minas Tirith Evening-Star: Journal of the American Tolkien Society. \nHobbit Day\, on the other hand\, is scheduled to fall on the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings –  mutual birthday\, the date of the Long Awaited Party (translated in text by Tolkien as September 22).  This is perhaps the oldest festal observance associated with Tolkien fandom.  Celebration actually predates the formal designation of the holiday. A variety of names have been applied to the date and the celebrations. In large part\, Hobbit Day is usually taken up with the fun activities – the feasts\, games\, costume events\, fireworks and the like. Hobbit Day is a virtually ideal holiday\, incorporating attractive elements of several others: the masquerade fun of Halloween\, the feast of Thanksgiving\, the exchange of greeting cards and gifts associated with Christmas and birthdays\, the picnic atmosphere of Labor Day and Memorial Day\, the fireworks of Independence Day (or Guy Fawkes Day)… and the study and reflection associated with many commemorative days throughout the year. \nAccording to the fictional setting\, Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.) Tolkien Week is the week containing Hobbit Day. The Fellowship of the Ring opened with a celebration of Bilbo’s birthday. It was a large party with food\, fireworks\, dancing and much merriment. Some Tolkien fans celebrate by emulating the hobbits’ parties. Other simply go barefoot in honour of the hobbits\, who don’t wear shoes. Some schools and libraries use this as an opportunity to pique interest in Tolkien’s work by putting up displays and hosting events. The Lord of the Rings: “There is no record of the Shire-folk commemorating either March 25 or September 22; but in the Westfarthing\, especially in the country round Hobbiton Hill\, there grew a custom of making holiday and dancing in the Party Field\, when weather permitted\, on April 6.” In Gondor\, however\, “in honour of Frodo Yavannie 30\, which corresponded to the former September 22\, his birthday\, was made a festival\, and the leap-year was provided for by doubling this feast\, called Cormare or Ringday.” \nLinks:\nHobbit Day and Tolkien Week

DESCRIPTION:From 21 to 24 September 2025\, representatives of more than 35 European seas\, lakes\, rivers\, wetlands\, lagoons\, and glaciers will confluence in the Netherlands. \nWhen two or more rivers meet in a landscape\, they flow together and continue as one body of water: they ‘confluence’. The Confluence 2025 is a growing interdisciplinary community of water representatives that strives for new dialogues and relationships with Europe’s water bodies. The network was founded by the Embassy of the North Sea\, TBA21–Academy\, and ILP Mar Menor. The first edition of the Confluence took place in 2023 at the Mar Menor in Spain – the first European ecosystem to be granted the status of a legal entity. In 2024\, this ever-growing community of water bodies gathered at the Venice lagoon. The Confluence of European Water Bodies 2025 will open in Amsterdam on 21 September 2025\, inaugurated by the British writer Robert Macfarlane\, followed by a three-day programme organised by the Embassy of the North Sea. During the Confluence we will be exploring new ways to represent water in the cultural\, political and legal domain. Het programma stelt zich ten doel inzicht in de werking van de samenleving te verschaffen. \nGoed nieuws: voor een duurzame en sociale samenleving hoeven we niet te wachten op Den Haag. De transitie van Nederland is al lang bezig en eigenlijk ook niet meer te stoppen. Dat concludeert journalist en geograaf Floor Milikowski\, die voor haar boek Contouren van een nieuw land kriskras door Nederland reisde op zoek naar verfrissende ideeën en nieuwe manieren van leven. In het spoor van pioniers en vooruitgangdenkers ziet ze hoe geleidelijk aan een meer duurzame\, sociale en verbonden samenleving ontstaat. Zo dwingt het veranderende klimaat ons vanzelf om ons aan te passen aan het landschap. ‘We zijn gaan wonen in beekdalen en rivierdalen\, en zijn vervolgens heel gepikeerd dat daar af en toe water doorheen stroomt\,’ zo haalt Milikowski landschapsarchitect Harro de Jong aan. We dachten dat we het landschap hadden opgelost. Dat water geen factor meer was\, omdat we het hadden afgedamd\, omgeleid of weggepompt. Maar met een veranderend klimaat keert de natuur terug in haar oude ritme. Nederland is zo dicht bebouwd\, ontgonnen en georganiseerd dat we nauwelijks nog ruimte over hebben gelaten voor natuurlijke processen. \nEn nu wreekt zich dat. Elke centimeter grond is benut – voor wonen\, landbouw of infrastructuur – en dus botst het als rivieren weer buiten hun oevers treden of de bodem zakt in veengebieden. Het tijd is om opnieuw te kijken naar wat een landschap ons eigenlijk vertelt: wat kan er op een plek wél\, en wat niet? Terug naar de kaart\, niet met de pen van de planoloog\, maar met het oog van de ecoloog. Het mooie is: veel verandert al. Gemeenschappen\, ondernemers en ontwerpers nemen het voortouw. Ze passen hun omgeving aan\, geven water weer ruimte\, kiezen voor ander landgebruik of bouwen klimaatadaptief. Vaak kleinschalig\, maar wel effectief. Durven we te erkennen dat we niet overal de baas zijn over het landschap? In de Tegenlicht zomerpodcast-aflevering ‘Nieuw Nederland’ laat Milikowski zien dat hoop en verbeeldingskracht essentieel zijn. Wie alleen maar kijkt naar wat er misgaat\, ziet vooral beperkingen. Maar wie durft te dromen\, ziet een land dat opnieuw kan worden ingericht – samen met de natuur\, en niet ertegenin.
