DESCRIPTION:Het bloed van tienduizenden mensen kleeft aan de handen van Netanyahu\, maar wereldleiders schudden zijn hand nog steeds met plezier: teken nu de internationale burgeroproep voor gerechtigheid! \nZonder gerechtigheid kan er geen echte vrede zijn tussen Palestina en Israël. Burgeracties hebben bijgedragen aan het staakt-het-vuren\, maar de vrede blijft ongelooflijk fragiel. In het weekend van 18 – 19 oktober 2025 heeft Israël tientallen slachtoffers gemaakt met dodelijke luchtaanvallen en levensreddende hulp stopgezet. Beide kanten beschuldigen elkaar ervan het bestand geschonden te hebben. Laten we onze stemmen blijven verheffen voor vrede en verantwoording\, en aan de wereld laten zien dat onze leiders moeten luisteren. We zullen niet rusten totdat Netanyahu en zijn overheid verantwoordelijk worden gesteld. Sluit je nu aan — op naar een miljoen handtekeningen! Netanyahu wil niet dat je dit leest. Hij wil dat we zijn misdaden vergeten terwijl hij zich voorbereidt op de volgende verkiezingen in Israël. Maar wij weten wel beter: hij zou voor het Internationaal Strafhof in Den Haag terecht moeten staan\, zodat gerechtigheid kan geschieden. Teken en deel deze open brief zodat onze leiders niet vergeten hem ter verantwoording te roepen: \nAan alle wereldleiders: \nVrede zonder gerechtigheid is een illusie. \nZe staan in ons geheugen gegrift: de gezichten van de kinderen in Gaza\, begraven onder het puin van Netanyahu’s bombardementen. \nHet Internationaal Strafhof heeft een arrestatiebevel voor Netanyahu uitgevaardigd wegens zijn oorlogsmisdaden en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid. Het internationaal recht is glashelder: als hij een ander land bezoekt\, moet hij worden opgepakt. \nHij heeft Gaza omgetoverd tot een kerkhof. C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is a non-periodic comet discovered by the Mount Lemmon Survey in images obtained on 3 January 2025. It has an inbound orbital period of about 1\,350 years and will pass perihelion on 8 November 2025 when it will be 0.53 AU (79 million km) from the Sun. This perihelion passage will reduce the orbital period to about 1\,150 years. It makes its closest approach to Earth on 21 October 2025 and may be visible to the naked eye 42 degrees from the Sun after sunset. DESCRIPTION:Met het Continu Onderzoek Burgerperspectieven (COB) onderzoekt het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP) sinds 2008 de stemming van Nederlanders over de maatschappij en de politiek\, de derde editie van 2025 bestaat uit twee delen. \nHet eerste deel gaat in op de stemming over het land. Hierin besteden we aandacht aan wat mensen verwachten van een nieuw kabinet en hun houdingen over politiek en democratie. Hiervoor is kwantitatief en kwalitatief opinieonderzoek uitgevoerd. Aan het kwantitatieve onderzoek deden 2.289 respondenten mee. \nIn het tweede deel gaan we dieper in op de achtergronden van maatschappelijk onbehagen. Op basis van open antwoorden in de periode 2008-2025\, focusgroepen en een enquête hebben we gekeken waarom mensen het de verkeerde kant op vinden gaan en wat dit met hen doet. Een deel van dit onderzoek is uitgevoerd in samenwerking met onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. \nEen meerderheid van de Nederlanders (59%) vindt dat het de verkeerde kant opgaat met ons land. Veel mensen voelen machteloosheid en zijn gefrustreerd over de samenleving en de politiek. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP) naar de stemming in Nederland. Mensen denken dat ze zelf weinig kunnen doen aan de maatschappelijke problemen in ons land. Zij vinden dat de politiek met oplossingen moeten komen\, maar in hun ogen gebeurt dat niet of wordt niet het goede gedaan. Er staan zoveel huizen\, kantoren en winkels in Nederland leeg dat alle inwoners van de stad Utrecht erin zouden kunnen wonen. Dit blijkt uit een berekening van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek en het journalistieke platform Pointer (KRO-NCRV). De leegstand komt neer op 200.000 nieuwbouwappartementen. In totaal staat er 17\,8 miljoen vierkante meter aan panden structureel leeg\, aldus het CBS. Er zit al zeker een jaar geen bewoner of huurder in. Ook wordt er geen of nauwelijks energie afgenomen in deze gebouwen. Al die leegstand bij elkaar\, is evenveel oppervlak als 200.000 standaard nieuwbouwappartementen. Dat zou genoeg plek bieden voor alle inwoners van Utrecht (377.000). DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nDe spanning loopt op in Artillerie Schietkamp ’t Harde. We mogen bij hoge uitzondering filmen op dit militaire oefenterrein. Vlak voor de mortieren inslaan staat het team oog in oog met maar liefst vijf wolven. Op dit grootste aaneengesloten heideterrein van Nederland mogen normaal alleen militairen komen. Van die rust profiteert de visarend\, die dit droge gebied heeft ontdekt als broedgebied\, een unicum. We gaan op zoek naar de kleine wrattenbijter\, een sprinkhaan die in ons land alleen hier nog voorkomt. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm ε-Geminiden bereikt op zondag 19 oktober 2025 rond 14:00 zijn maximum\, zelfs wanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld slechts zo’n 3 meteoren per uur vallen. \nRond 06:30 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 64°) aan de hemel. In onze streken zijn naar schatting circa 2 meteoren per uur te zien van deze zwerm. In totaal zijn er\, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren\, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 15–24 “vallende sterren” per uur te zien. Op een donkere plek zijn circa 90% meer meteoren te zien dan in een grote stad. De Maan komt om 05:51 op\, is voor ongeveer 5% verlicht en stoort niet erg. Rond 07:30 gaat het schemeren en om 08:12 komt de Zon op. De meteoren van de meeste zwermen verschijnen niet allemaal op de dag van het maximum. Zo is gedurende circa 15 dagen rondom het maximum ruim 50% van het maximale aantal meteoren (1 per uur) van de ε-Geminiden te zien. De zwerm heeft daarmee een vrij lange piek. Er zijn dus nog meer kansen\, voor het geval het in de nacht van het maximum niet helder is. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 10% kleiner. DESCRIPTION:During the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW)\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are together calling for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. \nThe aim of the week is to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance. It also wants to promote the correct usage of antibiotics across all fields in order to prevent further instances of antibiotic resistance. World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been held every November since 2015.  Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present\, Secure Our Future.” This theme underscores the urgent need to take bold\, united action to address AMR. AMR is already harming our health\, food systems\, environment and economies. It’s not a future challenge. It is happening now. Drug-resistant infections are increasing\, yet awareness\, investment and action are still falling short. Building on the momentum of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on AMR\, this call to action urges all stakeholders\, including governments\, civil society\, health-care providers\, veterinarians\, farmers\, environmental actors and the public to translate the political commitments into tangible\, accountable\, life-saving interventions. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report “Overlapping Hardships: Poverty and Climate Hazards”\, released ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil\, presents new evidence that the climate crisis is reshaping global poverty. \nBy overlaying climate hazard data with multidimensional poverty data for the first time\, the findings reveal a world where poverty is not just a standalone socio-economic issue but one that is deeply interlinked with planetary pressures and instability. The 2025 MPI report\, for the first time\, overlays data on climate hazards and multidimensional poverty to assess how exposed poor people are to environmental shocks. The report highlights that most people in poverty are exposed to at least one climate hazard; many confront several at the same time. By the end of this century\, the countries projected to face the steepest temperature increases are those already burdened with higher levels of multidimensional poverty. This year’s update of the global MPI database includes new data from 13 countries. It presents MPI data from 109 countries\, along with subnational estimates covering 1\,359 regions across 101 countries. The results show that 1.1 billion of 6.3 billion people live in acute multidimensional poverty\, over half of them children. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. DESCRIPTION:Orkaan Melissa (Hurricane Melissa) was een actieve\, langzaam voortbewegende en extreem krachtige tropische cycloon in de Caribische Zee\, die eind oktober 2025 over Jamaica en het oosten van Cuba richting Atlantische Oceaan trok. \nMelissa is de dertiende storm met een naam\, de vijfde orkaan en de derde orkaan van categorie 5 van het Atlantische orkaanseizoen van 2025. Het is de sterkste orkaan van het seizoen (dat op zijn einde loopt) en was de sterkste tropische cycloon van 2025 wereldwijd tot dan toe. Het was ook de achtste meest intense Atlantische orkaan geregistreerd. Melissa is ontstaan uit een tropische golf waarvan de ontwikkeling voor het eerst werd gemonitord op 16 oktober 2025. De golf ontstond in West-Afrika\, reisde van de centrale Atlantische Oceaan naar de Bovenwindse Eilanden en bewoog zich vervolgens snel westwaarts naar de Caribische Zee\, waar hij vertraagde en zich op 16 oktober ontwikkelde tot de tropische storm Melissa. Zwakke stuurstromen en matige windschering zorgden ervoor dat Melissa de volgende dagen slingerend en ongeorganiseerd bleef\, terwijl ze langzaam naar het noordwesten trok. Uiteindelijk raakt Melissa beter georganiseerd\, en van 25 tot 27 oktober intensiveerde ze snel tot een orkaan van categorie 5. Op 29 oktober kwam de orkaan aan land op de zuidkust van Jamaica. Melissa was de zwaarste orkaan ooit op het eiland gemeten. De orkaan richtte grote schade aan\, waarbij 19 mensen om het leven kwamen. De havenstad Black River is voor 90% verwoest en veel wegen op het eiland zijn onbegaanbaar geworden. Haïti lag niet in het pad van de orkaan\, maar werd wel dagenlang geteisterd door regenbuien. Hier vielen circa 25 slachtoffers\, vooral door overstromingen. Na Jamaica trok de orkaan over het oosten van Cuba. Melissa was ondertussen afgezwakt tot een categorie 3 orkaan. Op Cuba werden ruim 700.000 inwoners geevacueerd. Op 30 oktober trok de tot categorie 1 afgezwakte orkaan over de Bahamas. DESCRIPTION:Politieke Persvrijheidmeter laat zien: Persvrijheid in Nederland niet vanzelfsprekend. \nFree Press Unlimited publiceert de Politieke Persvrijheidmeter 2025\, de resultaten laten zien dat Volt\, D66 en de Partij voor de Dieren zich het meest inzetten voor persvrijheid. Tegelijkertijd blijkt dat persvrijheid in Nederland niet zo vanzelfsprekend is als we denken. Niet alle partijen – ook de grootste in de huidige peilingen – erkennen of verdedigen het belang van vrije media. Een ontwikkeling die volgens Free Press Unlimited reden is tot zorg. In aanloop naar de Tweede Kamerverkiezing van 29 oktober 2025 onderzocht Free Press Unlimited wat politieke partijen zeggen én doen voor persvrijheid. De Politieke Persvrijheidmeter brengt in kaart aan de hand van de partijprogramma’s en stemgedrag op moties in de Tweede Kamer. De uitkomsten zijn duidelijk: sommige partijen beschermen persvrijheid actief\, anderen kiezen juist voor inperkend beleid – dat is reden tot zorg. Als een democratie onder druk staat\, dan is persvrijheid vaak als eerste de klos. Vrije pers vormt de garantie dat machthebbers verantwoordelijk gehouden kunnen worden voor hun acties. Door deze vrijheid in te perken\, krijgen machthebbers vrij spel om twijfel te zaaien en desinformatie te verspreiden. Partijen die onafhankelijke media of journalisten aanvallen\, staan daarmee haaks op de basis van onze democratie.
