DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn 2015\, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Following extensive consultations\, a proposal was submitted to the attention of the thirty-second session of FAO Committee on Fisheries. The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date reflects the day when the Port State Measures Agreement officially entered into force as an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event\, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the FAO Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) recent report\, “Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources – 2025\,” over a third of fish stocks are being overexploited. IUU fishing catches millions of tonnes of fish every year. To curtail this\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urged the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. Meeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. \nLinks:\nDay for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

DESCRIPTION:Wereldmilieudag (Engels: World Environment Day) wordt sinds 1974 jaarlijks door de Verenigde Naties georganiseerd\, de inzet is om overheden en bevolking stil te laten staan bij ons milieu. \nDeze speciale dag moet het bewustzijn hierover verbeteren. Er is voor 5 juni gekozen omdat op die dag in 1972 de internationale milieuconferentie begon die ook bekendstaat als het United Nations Environment Programme. Elk jaar organiseert een bepaalde gaststad in steeds weer een ander land de vergadering. Deze dag heeft verwantschap met de Dag van de Aarde. Op Wereldmilieudag worden meerdere acties gehouden en projecten uitgevoerd. In de Braziliaanse stad Goiânia staat een zeven meter hoog ampulvormig sculptuur als monument voor wereldvrede. Deze is gevuld met bodemmonsters/aarde – ofwel grond – uit vele landen\, dat symboliseert om tot een eenheid van de mensheid te komen. DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste vrijdag van juni is het DonutDag (Donut Day / Doughnut Day)\, een buurtfeest waar gratis donuts door het Leger des Heils worden weggegeven. \nDe donut werd bekend toen lang geleden\, aan het front van de Eerste Wereldoorlog\, jonge heilssoldates van het Leger des Heils verse donuts uitdeelden aan infanteriesoldaten (Engels: doughboy). De vrouwen die de donuts uitdeelden\, werden al snel ‘donutmeisjes’ (Engels: doughnut dollies’) genoemd. De donut werd een symbool van alles wat het Leger des Heils deed om de ontberingen te verlichten van de aan de frontlinie vechtende mensen. Sindsdien deelt het Leger overal ter wereld donuts uit. DESCRIPTION:Pinkpop is een jaarlijks\, driedaags popfestival in de Nederlands-Limburgse gemeente Landgraaf\, dat sinds 1970 normaal gesproken in het weekeinde van Pinksteren plaatsvindt. \nHet festival duurt sinds 1996 drie dagen en trekt per dag tienduizenden bezoekers. Pinkpop is het langstlopende jaarlijkse popfestival ter wereld. Het festival is een aantal keren van locatie gewisseld. In principe wordt het evenement sinds 2008 in elk jaar waarin Pinksteren vroeg valt\, niet met Pinksteren gehouden\, maar in een ander weekend\, dat in of dichter bij de maand juni ligt. De reden hiervoor is dat Pinksteren anders te ver van andere Europese festivals zou liggen en er dan niet veel bands op tournee zijn in Europa. Vogelonderzoeker Tim Langerak van adviesbureau Ecoresult doet onderzoek naar deze zeldzame mezensoort. De eikelmuis verdwijnt in een alarmerend tempo uit Europa. Zuid-Limburg geeft de strijd niet op en werkt sinds 2018 hard om het leefgebied te herstellen. Natuurfilmers Arthur de Bruin en Dick Harrewijn legden het onderwaterleven anno nu in bewegend beeld vast. DESCRIPTION:The World Swift Day (WSD) was created in January 2019 by Swifts Without Frontiers. \nEvery year since then\, it has been celebrated around the globe\, on June 7. Since day 1\, Dr. Jane Goodall has been an enthusiatic Patron\, each and every year. Swifts Without Frontiers invites all NGO’s\, municipalities\, individuals\, companies\, schools and any collectivity caring for Swifts to celebrate that day by communicating about Swifts (whichever species) and by organizing events. WSD was initially inspired by other World Days like the World Sparrow Day\, then by the World Chimpanzee Day. The date of June 7 was chozen as the best “compromise date” between both hemispheres and all the different Swift species of the world. DESCRIPTION:Food safety is the absence — or safe\, acceptable levels — of hazards in food that may harm the health of consumers. \nFood-borne hazards can be microbiological\, chemical or physical in nature and are often invisible to the plain eye: bacteria\, viruses\, or pesticide residues are some examples. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain – from production to harvest\, processing\, storage\, distribution\, all the way to preparation and consumption. With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually\, unsafe food is a threat to human health and economies\, disproportionally affecting vulnerable and marginalized people\, especially women and children\, populations affected by conflict\, and migrants. An estimated three million people around the world — in developed and developing countries — die every year from food and waterborne disease. Food is the starting point for our energy\, our health and our well-being. We often take for granted that it is safe\, but in an increasingly complex and interconnected world where food value chains are growing longer\, standards and regulations are that much more important in keeping us safe. Food safety is key to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals and World Food Safety Day brings it into the spotlight\, to help prevent\, detect and manage foodborne risks. Safe food contributes to economic prosperity\, boosting agriculture\, market access\, tourism and sustainable development. \n\nGoal 2 — There is no food security without food safety. Ending hunger is about all people having access to safe\, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.\nGoal 3 — Food safety has a direct impact on people’s health and nutritional intake. Maar ook voor Nederlandse natuur haalt hij zijn neus niet op. Schrijver en historicus Eva Vriend schreef vorig jaar het essay ‘De Waterzoon’\, over vader Jac. P. en zoon Jo Thijsse. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nVanuit het stadscentrum van ’s-Hertogenbosch vaart de filmploeg een indrukwekkend moeras in: De Overlaat. Historisch gezien was het gebied van groot belang als waterberging en als militair verdedigingswerk voor de stad\, die niet voor niets bekend staat als de Moerasdraak. Maar ook de natuur profiteert! Met de Sint Jan op de achtergrond monitort Menno Bentveld grote modderkruipers die door het plantenrijke water zwemmen. Lepelaars en roerdompen vliegen over een oude spoorbrug. Aan de randen van het moeras\, richting de hogere zandgronden\, groeit blauwgrasland. Daar fladderen tal van dagvlinders en groeit een wel heel bijzondere orchidee. De Overlaat bestaat uit een aantal deelgebieden. Het Bossche Broek Noord en de Moerputten zijn van Staatsbosbeheer. It focuses each year on one contemporary and innovative public health topic\, such as Burden of Disease (2019)\, Public Health Surveillance (2021)\, Climate Change and Public Health (2022)\, Social Inequities in Health (2023)\, Mobility and Public Health (2024) and Public Health Data (2025). \nEach year\, the Robert Koch Institute invites leading international experts to present and discuss their area of work at the Robert Koch Colloquium. This year’s colloquium topic was “Navigating Public Health in times of Global uncertainties”. Over two days\, a series of interactive lectures addressed topics related to the impact of conflicts on Public Health systems\, global sharing of health data in times of uncertainty\, the current shifts in health governance at local\, national and international level as well as the citizens’ trust in Public Health science. The lectures were  complemented by a panel discussion. \nThe Robert Koch Colloquium 2026 addressed an urgent challenge of today’s public health landscape: how to adapt to global uncertainties and political fragmentation. Armed conflicts\, political and economic instability\, climate-related pressures\, and fluctuating public trust increasingly shape the contexts in which public health systems operate\, challenging established modes-of-action and international cooperation. In response to these dynamics\, the RKC 2026 brought together leading international experts to reflect on how public health can respond and evolve under conditions of crisis and transformation. Over two days\, the programme examined public health action in times of crisis. We explored\n1) the health impacts of armed conflict on population health including mental health and non-communicable diseases.\n2) widening inequalities in times of global polycrisis.\n3) the need for a resilient global health architecture during geopolitical shifts in power and interests. The colloquium also shed light on advancing health data justice and the development of resilient cross-border data-sharing frameworks that can withstand political and financial pressures. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nLife on Earth depends on the sun for its light and its warmth. En welke factoren beïnvloeden hoe mensen oordelen over de betrouwbaarheid en geloofwaardigheid van wetenschappelijke (mis)informatie op sociale media? Dat zijn de twee deelvragen die het rapport ‘Wikken en weten‘ behandelt. Voor het onderzoek analyseerde het Rathenau Instituut circa 8.500 vragenlijsten die werden ingevuld door een representatieve steekproef van de Nederlandse samenleving. Ook organiseerde het instituut zeven focusgroepen\, waarin deelnemers verschillende socialemediaberichten kregen voorgelegd. Of mensen misinformatie op sociale media geloven\, hangt voor een belangrijk deel samen met hun ervaringen in de offline wereld.
