DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. Janine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. Van 26 juli tot en met 30 augustus is VPRO Zomergasten elke zondagavond live te zien op NPO 2 en NPO Start. \n\n\nInternationaal onderhandelaar en oud-politicus Sigrid Kaag (Rijswijk\, 1961) is op zondag 23 augustus de vijfde gast in VPRO Zomergasten. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nBosbranden\, droogte en extreem lage rivierwaterstanden: Klimaatverandering is een bloedserieus thema. Dat ziet ook minister van Klimaat en Groene Groei Stientje van Veldhoven\, maar worden de klimaatdoelen wel gehaald? Achter namen als vuurwants\, groene stinkwants en bedwants schuilt een verrassend rijke en kleurrijke wereld. We spreken we met entomoloog Berend Aukema over zijn nieuwe Veldgids Wantsen. In 2009 woedde in de Schoorlse duinen een grote brand. Om te zien hoe dit duingebied zich na deze ramp heeft herstelt gaan we op pad met boswachter Jeroen Pater van Staatsbosbeheer. DESCRIPTION:In de nacht van 22 op 23 augustus 1791 begon in Saint Domingue (nu Haiti) de opstand die een cruciale rol zou gaan spelen bij de afschaffing van de transatlantische slavenhandel\, daarom wordt de wereldwijde dag ter herinnering aan de slavenhandel en de afschaffing ervan jaarlijks gevierd op 23 augustus. \nTen tijde van het Romeinse Rijk was er een levendige handel van slaven uit van het hele rijk en de omringende gebieden. Het woord “slaven” is dan ook afgeleid van de Slavische volkeren\, vanuit de Romeinse optiek “‘barbaarse” volkeren waarvan de Romeinen slaven kochten. Na opkomst van het Christendom verdween de slavernij en de slavenhandel uit West-Europa. Met het ontstaan van de wereldhandel en de behoefte aan goedkope arbeidskrachten in de Koloniën gingen West-Europeanen zich echter wel met slavernij en slavenhandel inlaten. Slavenhandelaars kochten slaven bij lokale heersers\, die vaak krijgsgevangenen\, maar vaak ook hun eigen burgers aan de handelaars verkochten; of ze vingen zelf mensen. Officieel komt slavernij\, en dus ook slavenhandel\, tegenwoordig nergens meer voor. Toch komen ook tegenwoordig nog op slavernij gelijkende situaties voor. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. \nThe General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/73/296\, designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief recognizing the importance of providing victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief and members of their families with appropriate support and assistance in accordance with applicable law. It strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief\, as well as any such acts directed against their homes\, businesses\, properties\, schools\, cultural centres or places of worship\, as well as all attacks on and in religious places\, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law. A previous resolution establishing the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (A/RES/72/165) also recognized that working together to enhance the implementation of existing legal regimes that protect individuals against discrimination and hate crimes\, increasing interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural efforts and expanding human rights education are important first steps in combating incidents of intolerance\, discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of religion or belief. \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. Freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent\, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18\, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open\, constructive and respectful debate of ideas\, as well as interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural dialogue\, at the local\, national\, regional and international levels\, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred\, incitement and violence. Furthermore\, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek\, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. \nLinks:\nDay Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief

DESCRIPTION:The Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. \nIn its resolution 72/165 (2017)\, the General Assembly\, established the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism to be commemorated annually on 21 August\, in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In April 2020\, mandated by General Assembly resolution 73/305\, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres published his report on the ‘Progress of the UN system to support Member States in assisting victims of terrorism’ (A/74/790)\, which calls for the ‘enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism’. Member States\, through the biennial review resolutions of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy have emphasized the important role of victims of terrorism in countering terrorism\, promoting international solidarity\, preventing violent extremism\, and helping Member States recognize and uphold their human rights\, and support their distinct needs. \nSince the sixth review of the Strategy (2018)\, developments at the international\, regional\, and national levels have increasingly demonstrated that support to victims has moved beyond symbolic solidarity towards a more robust engagement to advance their rights and needs. This is reflected in the establishment in 2019 of a Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism\, and the adoption of General Assembly resolution A/RES/73/305 on the enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism. The eighth review resolution\, adopted on 22 June 2023 (A/RES/77/298) notes the importance of upholding the rights and supporting the needs of victims of terrorism\, in particular of women\, children and those affected by sexual and gender-based violence committed by terrorists. It encourages all Member States to develop national comprehensive assistance plans for victims of terrorism and their families to address the immediate-\, short- and long-term needs of victims of terrorism. The resolution welcomed the first United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism\, held in September 2022 at UN Headquarters\, encourages the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism\, through the Global Victims of Terrorism Support Programme and the United Nations Victims of Terrorism Support Portal\, to continue to raise awareness on victims of terrorism and the promotion and protection of their rights. DESCRIPTION:2026 is going to be renowned for the development of the largest El Niño in living memory and what is probably the largest such event since the 19th century. \nAnalysis of historical data and computer simulations highlight the anomalous global rainfall patterns from El Niño\, these are also well documented in a variety of impacts and humanitarian studies which detail the more sector-specific impacts. The Indian summer monsoon is one of the regional weather patterns affected as El Niño grows and it is already running well below normal rainfall. Other regions at risk of low rainfall include Central America\, west Pacific nations and tropical South America. El Niño also affects tropical cyclones and suppresses Atlantic hurricanes by increasing wind shear in the tropical Atlantic. Consistent with this\, there have only been three storms so far this season\, but it only takes one large hurricane to lead to devastating impacts. The El Niño is now growing towards its peak in winter\, and the impacts will affect not only the tropics but also the mid latitudes and so southern Africa and north-east Australia are expected to be at heightened risk of drought. DESCRIPTION:Ieder jaar op 20 augustus wordt een event georganiseerd om stil te staan bij de dood van Kerwin Lucas Duinmeijer en om een stem te laten horen tegen racisme\, fascisme en oorlog. \n \nIn de nacht van 20 op 21 augustus 1983 vond in de Damstraat in Amsterdam een steekpartij plaats\, waarbij de 15-jarige Antilliaan Kerwin Duinmeijer (officiële naam: Kerwin Urleson Lucas) ernstig gewond raakte\, hij overleed enkele uren later in een ziekenhuis aan bloedverlies. De dader was de 16-jarige skinhead Nico Bodemeijer. In de media en in de publieke opinie werd kort na de gebeurtenis algemeen aangenomen dat racisme een belangrijke rol had gespeeld in de toedracht omdat tijdens het incident door Bodemeijer racistische taal werd geuit. De dood van Duinmeijer werd bestempeld als eerste racistische moord in Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Niettemin stelde de rechter in haar vonnis dat het niet aannemelijk is geworden dat racisme het wezenlijk motief voor de daad is geweest. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. SUMMARY:World Mosquito Day / Wereld Muggen Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Mosquito Day\, observed annually on 20 August\, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans\, thus confirming the mosquito-malaria theory\, an idea that had been building in recent years through the work of various contributors such as Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran and Patrick Manson. \nPrior to the discovery of the transmitting organism\, vector\, there were few means for controlling the spread of the disease although the discovery of quinine in treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment. According to one survey\, nearly half the world population was at significant risk from malaria in the 19th century with a 10% mortality among those infected. Ross had already conducted experiments with Culex (possibly C. fatigans) fed on birds infected with bird malaria Protesoma relictum (now Plasmodium relictum) in 1894 and noted that they developed in mosquito gut and had surmised that the same may happen in malaria. The discovery was made in a small laboratory in Begumpet area of Secunderabad\, Hyderabad. Today the laboratory is known as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology and houses a small museum on Ross and his malaria research. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year\, including events such as parties and exhibitions. Hoe ga je verder met je dagelijks leven\, als je weet dat elders op de wereld verschrikkelijke bosbranden gaande zijn? Bosbranden gaande zijn? Kan dat eigenlijk? Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt. \nHet programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nHittegolven\, langdurige droogte en harde wind zorgden deze zomer op veel plaatsen voor extreme omstandigheden. We spreken Wageningse onderzoeker Cathelijne Stoof\, gespecialiseerd in natuurbranden en Frans Schepers van Rewilding Europe. De blauwe kiekendief staat in Nederland als broedvogel op uitsterven. De laatste paartjes broeden vrijwel altijd op de Waddeneilanden\, maar dit jaar werden onderzoekers verrast door een succesvol broedgeval in een graanveld op het vasteland. Gepensioneerd docent Jan Katsman heeft een nieuwe libellengids geschreven over soorten van de Benelux. Hij loopt wekelijks een traject door het Leersumse veld waar bijzondere libellen voorkomen. Verder in de uitzending: de wateratlas van Noord-Holland\, veldgids van kustvissen\, de wespentelling\, lachen om het klimaat\, natuur in het theater en de soundscape van Europa.
