DESCRIPTION:Op 29 april 1951\, in 2026 75 jaar geleden\, legde in Amsterdam het schip de “New Australia” aan met aan boord een groep Molukse militairen van het Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (KNIL) de Molukse mannen met hun gezinnen zouden hier eigenlijk maar een paar maanden blijven\, terwijl Nederland zich zou inzetten voor een onafhankelijke Molukse staat. \nDe Molukkers zijn een Melanesische–Austronesische bevolkingsgroep die de oorspronkelijke bevolking uitmaken van de eilandenreeks de Molukken\, die sinds 1950 onderdeel is van Indonesië. Na de beëindiging van het Nederlandse bestuur over Nederlands-Indië zijn veel Zuid-Molukkers die beroepssoldaat waren in het KNIL door de Nederlandse overheid naar Nederland gebracht. Een deel van hen woont bij elkaar in Molukse wijken. Na de Japanse bezetting van Nederlands-Indië tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wilde het koloniale Nederland de oude koloniale situatie herstellen. De inheemse Indonesiërs kwamen daartegen echter in opstand en onder leiding van Soekarno brak tussen 1945 en 1949 een onafhankelijkheidsstrijd uit. Het heropgerichte KNIL kreeg van de Nederlandse overheid de opdracht de orde te handhaven en de vrijheidsstrijders te ontwapenen. Molukse beroepsmilitairen vormden een belangrijk deel van dit leger. Hierdoor werd de Molukse bevolkingsgroep door de Nederlanders beschouwd als bondgenoten en vice versa. Nadat de regering van Nederland internationaal\, met name van de Verenigde Staten\, geen steun kreeg bij haar pogingen de kolonie te behouden\, moest zij in december 1949 de soevereiniteit aan Indonesië overdragen. Dat was aan de Verenigde Staten van Indonesië\, zoals tijdens de rondetafelconferentie van de dekolonisatieonderhandelingen was afgesproken. Toen al in januari 1950 de federatieve structuur van Indonesië werd ontmanteld\, werd op de Molukken de onafhankelijke Republiek der Zuid-Molukken (Republik Maluku Selatan ofwel RMS) uitgeroepen. \nEen groep Molukse KNIL-militairen die\, buiten de Molukken\, in afwachting waren van hun afvloeiing steunde de RMS-proclamatie. Nederland erkende de RMS niet en wilde de Molukse militairen daar ook niet naartoe brengen. Omdat een patstelling ontstond in de demobilisatie van deze groep Molukkers\, werd zij in 1951 naar Nederland overgebracht. Op dwingend advies van de RMS-delegatie in Nederland kozen de soldaten zelf vrijwillig voor de\, in hun ogen enige reële mogelijkheid van een tijdelijke overkomst naar Nederland. In tegenstelling met wat vaak wordt beweerd\, was van een dienstbevel om in te schepen dus geen sprake. De Molukse militairen en hun gezinnen\, in totaal ongeveer 12.500 personen\, zouden slechts tijdelijk blijven. De Molukkers werden lange tijd gehuisvest in kampen in Nederland\, waaronder het voormalig kamp Westerbork. De in Nederland verblijvende Molukkers vroegen herhaaldelijk aandacht voor hun claim op een vrije republiek. In de jaren zeventig escaleerde dit steeds meer. The adoption of new EU rules\, including the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and the Anti-SLAPP Directive\, promised improvement; however\, slow and often superficial implementation rendered their impact negligible. The overarching trends of previous years\, including rising media ownership concentration\, opaque ownership structures\, the politicisation of state advertising and political interference in public service media and regulators\, remained pervasive issues throughout the Union\, with certain areas even declining. This Report is the fifth annual report on media freedom in the EU produced by the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties). It is based on data and input from nearly 40 member and partner organisations from 22 EU Member States. IWMD is an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace incidents and ill health and to promote campaigns and union organization in the fight for improvements in workplace safety. As large herbivores\, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment into their territory\, and amongst the last to return to regrowth forest. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs inhabit jungles\, grasslands\, swamps and cloud forests\, yet each is threatened by human activity – be that mining\, palm oil plantations\, roads or settlements. They form an important part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers\, and form one of the oldest surviving genera in the animal kingdom. Despite their size\, history and ecological importance\, tapirs remain one of the least recognised species of animals. In comparison with other animals\, tapirs feature little in the collective consciousness and are frequently misidentified by zoo visitors. Even in their home ranges\, tapirs receive little attention\, with exotic species featuring more prominently in zoos\, children’s books and the media. The plight of tapirs is symbolic for the wider threat to their habitats specifically\, and the world’s ecology in general. The decline of tapir populations is indicative of the general health of their ranges; their disappearance from their home ranges often marks a point of ‘no return’ for the natural environment. The destruction of forests into small\, isolated enclaves and the encroachment of human activity into pristine forests affects all native species. However\, as the largest – yet perhaps the quietest – of animals in their ranges\, tapirs disappear without trace with countless other species. All tapirs are endangered species. Saving tapirs helps to save the rainforest. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nHonderden grote zilverreigers strijken neer in de Lettelberterpetten om te slapen\, terwijl aan de overkant van het Leekstermeer blauwe kiekendieven de nacht ingaan. In dit natte grensgebied tussen Drenthe en Groningen wemelt het van soorten die afhankelijk zijn van water. We zien rietgorzen op zoek naar eten en waterroofkevers tussen de krabbenscheer. De filmploeg loopt mee met jonge natuurliefhebbers die de muizenpopulatie in de gaten houdt. Ze ontdekken niet alleen de kritische waterspitsmuis\, die hier juist talrijk is. DESCRIPTION:Koningsdag (sinds 2014)\, eerder Prinsessedag (1885-1890) en Koninginnedag (1891-2013)\, is een nationale feestdag in Nederland ter ere van de verjaardag van het staatshoofd. \nIn alle delen van het koninkrijk geldt dit voor de meeste werknemers als vrije dag en wordt het gevierd met verschillende festiviteiten\, waaronder vrijmarkten\, muziekfestivals en het dragen van oranje kleding. Vanaf 1981 brengen de koning en/of koningin op deze dag een ceremonieel bezoek aan een of meer gemeenten van het land. Sinds 2014 heet de dag Koningsdag en wordt deze gevierd op 27 april\, als die datum op zondag valt\, wordt de dag verplaatst naar de zaterdag ervoor. Op de laatste vrijdag voor Koningsdag vinden de Koningsspelen plaats. Dit is een sportdag op scholen\, waarbij elke school zelf mag bepalen hoe deze ingevuld wordt. Het koningspaar viert de Koningsspelen ergens in het land mee. Aan de vooravond van Koningsdag worden de koninklijke onderscheidingen uitgereikt (officieel Algemene Gelegenheid voor het uitreiken van Koninklijke onderscheidingen en minder formeel de “Lintjesregen” genoemd). Is de dag voor Koningsdag een zondag\, dan gebeurt dat op de laatste vrijdag voor Koningsdag\, dus op de dag van de Koningsspelen. Voorheen gebeurde dat dan op de zaterdag ervoor\, dus op 28 april. Ook als Koningsdag zelf op zaterdag valt\, vindt de “Lintjesregen” op deze dag plaats. Het Koningsdagconcert is een concert ter gelegenheid van de verjaardag van de koning en vindt plaats voorafgaand aan Koningsdag in dezelfde gemeente. DESCRIPTION:The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) annual dinner\, begun in 1921\, traditionally held on the evening of the last Saturday in April at the Washington Hilton\, has become a Washington\, D.C. tradition\, and is attended by the president and vice president. \nUntil 1962\, the dinner was open only to men\, even though WHCA’s membership included women. At the urging of Helen Thomas\, President John F. Kennedy refused to attend the dinner unless the ban on women was dropped. Prior to World War II\, the annual dinner featured singing between courses\, a homemade movie\, and an hour-long\, post-dinner show with big-name performers. Since 1983\, the featured speaker has usually been a comedian\, with the dinner taking on the form of a comedy roast of the president and his administration. The dinner also funds scholarships for gifted students in college journalism programs. Many annual dinners have been cancelled or downsized due to deaths or political crises. The dinner was cancelled in 1930 due to the death of former president William Howard Taft; in 1942\, following the United States’ entry into World War II; and in 1951\, over what President Harry S. Truman called the “uncertainty of the world situation.” In 1981\, Ronald Reagan did not attend because he was recuperating after the attempted assassination the previous month\, but he did phone in and told a joke about the shooting. During his first presidency\, Donald Trump did not attend the dinners in 2017\, 2018\, and 2019. Trump indicated that he might attend in 2019 since this dinner did not feature a comedian as the featured speaker. However\, on April 5\, 2019\, he announced that he again would not attend\, calling the dinner “so boring\, and so negative\,” instead hosting a political rally that evening in Wisconsin. \nOn April 22\, Trump ordered a boycott of the dinner\, with White House Cabinet Secretary Bill McGinley assembling the agencies’ chiefs of staff to issue a directive that members of the administration not attend. However\, some members of the administration attended pre- and post-dinner parties. After the April 30\, 2022 dinner\, several attendees\, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken\, tested positive for COVID-19. However\, no cases of serious illness were reported as a result of the dinner. At the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner\, pro-Palestinian protesters shouted “Shame on you!” at arriving attendees. Trump also declined to attend the dinner in 2025\, the first year of his second presidency. Some members of his administration were also absent from the dinner and instead attended the launch party for Executive Branch\, a new private club in Georgetown that is owned by Donald Trump Jr. and others with ties to the administration. He attended the dinner in 2026 before evacuating after gunshots were heard. After officers secured the Washington Hilton hotel building\, the guests at the dinner departed the hotel. De 24e april is de geboortedag van Lord Dowding (overleden in 1970)\, die in zijn leven fel van leer trok tegen het proefdiergebruik. Zijn vrouw\, Lady Dowding (Muriel Albino Whiting)\, nam later een groot deel van zijn werk over. DESCRIPTION:Colombia and the Netherlands will host the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels. \nAn International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels is one of a series of international conferences for planning a phase-out of fossil fuels (oil\, natural gas\, and coal) in an effort to reduce climate change\, and to avoid the high prices\, insecurity\, volatility\, conflict and instability associated with fossil fuels. These fossil fuel-related conferences complement the annual United Nations COP conferences that focus on climate change. The conferences were born of frustration with the yearly United Nations climate conferences (COP\, Conference of the Parties) that began in 1995. At COP conferences\, all countries must agree on the language of any agreement\, so fossil fuel producing countries can oppose given language in the text and energy-rich nations can derail efforts to slow fossil fuel use. COP conferences traditionally focus on cutting greenhouse gas emissions\, rather than directly addressing fossil fuel production. Greenhouse gas emissions from military operations\, such as those in Ukraine (2022–) and Iran (2026)\, are not accurately accounted for under the 2015 Paris Agreement that was negotiated at COP 21. At COP28 (2023)\, countries agreed to transition away from fossil fuels\, but did not agree on how. At COP 30 (2025)\, 80 countries supported phasing out fossil fuels but the conference ended without a plan. The conference’s organizer\, Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative\, describes itself as “alliance of nation-states and civil society working to secure a global just transition from coal\, oil and gas”. The conferences’ focus on fossil fuels complements\, but does not replace\, the work of COP climate change conferences. \nThe First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels—also called The Santa Marta Conference—was held from 24–29 April 2026 in Santa Marta\, Colombia. The conference was co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands\, with 57 countries participating. Participating countries generate about one-third of global economic activity\, with almost all participating nations being democracies. Representatives from indigenous groups\, civil society\, youth\, and subnational authorities such as California also participated. The United States (the largest oil and gas producer and largest consumer of oil) and China (the largest consumer of coal) did not participate. Colombian environment minister Irene Vélez Torres said that\, to avoid rehashing COP 30 debates\, countries including China\, Russia and the US were not invited. A “science pre-conference” attended by 400 global academics from 24–25 April conceived a scientific panel designed to quickly provide country-specific analyses to nations wanting to accelerate their transition. The scientific panel was seen as necessary to combat the climate and energy disinformation populating the media. The next day involved a meeting for subnational governments\, parliamentarians and other stakeholders. Finally\, a high-level segment for ministers and climate envoys was held on 28–29 April. The conference’s format was less formal than that of COP conferences. DESCRIPTION:Artist Pavel Krisevich was held in Russia’s prison system for 3\,5 years after staging performance art in support of political prisoners in Russia. Last year\, Krisevich was released and will now speak at De Balie. \nThe performance art of Pavel Krisevich is as spectacular as it is fearless. He tied himself to a large cross like a Jesus figure in front of the headquarters of the FSB\, Russia’s secret service\, with a burning bonfire of files of political prisoners beneath him. In 2021\, Krisevich staged a suicide on Red Square in Moscow to draw attention to the abominable situation of political prisoners in Russia. It earned him a five-year prison sentence. From his cell\, Krisevich bravely continued making art; using his own blood as material\, he portrayed the bleak life in prison. Work from this series was previously shown at De Balie during the exhibition Artists Against the Kremlin. At De Balie\, Krisevich will speak about the power of art as resistance against an all-dominating system. DESCRIPTION:What might a working class anti-militarism might look like? How might we build such a movement of anti-capitalist war resistance? \nCapitalism means war\, war for the expansion of economic zones of influence and markets. Historically\, anarchist communists have argued that war is the health of the state and that the enemy in any war is primarily at home – that is\, the ruling class of the state in which the anarchist communist resides. They have tended not to take sides when nation states and imperialist powers have clashed in defence of their own national and imperial interests and have called upon the working class of all lands to fight in no war but the class war. Anti-militarism\, therefore\, has long been a focus of revolutionary activity for anarchists. This public meeting\, featuring speakers from the Anarchist Communist Group (ACG) and beyond\, will look at what a working class anti-militarism might look like and how we might build such a movement of anti-capitalist war resistance. As at all ACG public meetings\, participants are encouraged to bring their ideas and contribute to the discussion. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Wereldboekendag (ook bekend als Internationale dag van het boek en de auteursrechten\, en alternatief geschreven als Wereld Boeken Dag) is een evenement dat jaarlijks op 23 april wordt gehouden door UNESCO ter promotie van lezen\, publicatie en auteursrechten. De dag werd voor het eerst gehouden in 1995. \nDe datum 23 april werd gekozen omdat deze dag in Spanje al sinds 1923 in het teken stond van boeken. Op die dag werd de schrijver Miguel de Cervantes geëerd. Dit werd later ook opgenomen in de Spaanse viering van Sint Jorisdag (eveneens op 23 april). In Catalonie wordt deze dag sinds 1456 gevierd als Diada de Sant Jordi en schenkt men traditiegetrouw aan goede vrienden en geliefden een boek en een roos. Een andere reden om 23 april als datum te kiezen was omdat dit de sterfdag was van William Shakespeare\, Garcilaso de la Vega en Josep Pla. Alleen het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Ierland hanteren een andere datum voor wereldboekendag\, namelijk de eerste donderdag in maart. Dit omdat 23 april nog weleens wil samenvallen met Pasen en de bijbehorende schoolvakanties. Wereldboekendag wordt inmiddels in meer dan 100 landen gevierd\, waarbij elk land zijn eigen activiteiten organiseert.
