DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Youth & Food in Transition: Exploring adolescents’ dietary behaviours for a healthy and sustainable future. \nHealthy and sustainable dietary behaviours are of high importance for individual and planetary health; as eating behaviours are largely shaped at a young age\, youth are considered a key target group to stimulate such dietary behaviours. There is growing attention worldwide for school food and nutrition programmes\, as schools provide a setting to reach a diverse and large number of adolescents. Nevertheless\, there is limited knowledge on effective school-based food and nutrition interventions. Hence\, this thesis explored how we can better support and empower adolescents to adopt healthy and sustainable diets\, within the Dutch secondary school context. \nThe first objective was to identify factors influencing healthy and sustainable diets among adolescents. First\, experts in health\, sustainability\, and education participated in focus groups and a questionnaire to map and prioritise key factors on a socioecological model. They emphasized the importance of peers\, the school food environment\, social influences\, food availability and autonomy. Next\, 305 students from four secondary schools in rural and urban areas were consulted through questionnaires\, a food environment mapping assignment\, and focus groups. Adolescents described their homes as places where healthy and sustainable eating is easier\, but perceived more freedom to make less healthy choices outside the home. They identified 18 factors influencing their food choices\, including autonomy\, the social function of food among peers\, the influence of caregivers\, and the offer and price of food. Together\, these findings highlight the need for more supportive social and physical environments that promote healthy and sustainable options\, while recognizing adolescents’ need to express autonomy. \nThe second objective was to analyse existing Dutch school food and nutrition programmes. First\, interviews with programme representatives showed that many programmes focus on health\, with some links to sustainability. Moreover\, programmes were mostly designed for the classroom\, with only some including other elements of whole school approaches (e.g.\, the school canteen). Secondly\, the interviews revealed that many programmes focus on improving knowledge\, skills and awareness. Besides\, representatives emphasized the importance of using experiential and activating learning methods\, and adjusting to adolescents’ realities. These findings suggest that programmes could be strengthened by integrating health and sustainability\, moving beyond knowledge and skills\, and using interactive learning methods that fit to adolescents’ realities. \nThe third objective explored adolescents’ own understanding and perceived importance of healthy and sustainable food\, as well as their ideas to facilitate healthy and sustainable eating. Most students understood the concept of healthy eating and perceived it as important\, while fewer students valued sustainability. Nonetheless\, adolescents proposed many ideas for future interventions\, mostly relating to changes in the food environment (e.g.\, offer\, price) and the food system (e.g.\, more sustainable production\, governmental subsidies). \nIn sum\, this this thesis underscores that initiatives aiming to stimulate healthy and sustainable diets among adolescents should prioritise adolescents’ need for autonomy\, social interactions\, and an appealing and affordable food offer. Redeveloping school food programmes together with adolescents holds particular promise\, to ensure engagement\, motivation and relevance. DESCRIPTION:World Pneumonia Day (12 November) provides an annual forum for the world in the fight against pneumonia\, more than 100 organizations representing the interests of children joined forces as the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia to hold the first World Pneumonia Day on 12 November 2009. \nThe fight to reduce deaths from the single\, biggest infectious killer of adults and children has never been more urgent. In 2023\, pneumonia claimed the lives of 2.5 million\, including 610\,000 children under five\, according to the Global Burden of Disease. With aging populations\, urbanization\, and air pollution increasing the burden of respiratory infections\, and the risk of another COVID-like pandemic high\, there is a pneumonia crisis across the life course killing millions now and placing many more at risk of death when the next pandemic strikes. Tragically\, it is the very young and the very old who are at greatest risk. Children living in areas with low vaccination rates and malnutrition\, and in homes that use polluting fuels for cooking and heating\, are particularly vulnerable. Sixty percent of all child pneumonia deaths are attributable to malnutrition. Older adults exposed to outdoor air pollution – most significantly from burning fossil fuels – and smoking are also at risk. More than one in four pneumonia deaths among adults aged over 70 are attributable to air pollution and smoking. To focus the world’s attention on vital issues\, each year Every Breath Counts Coalition members vote on a theme. Child Survival is the theme for World Pneumonia Day 2025 in recognition that pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of child death. Geomagnetic storms are dangerous for astronauts\, but not harmful to humans as Earth’s atmosphere protects us from the radiation\, but can sometimes disrupt satellites and also different forms of electronic devices\, such as phones. DESCRIPTION:Two observances named World Orphans Day have been established to raise awareness of their plight; the first is observed on April 20 and the second on the second Monday of November. \nLosing both parents is one of the worst things that can happen to a child. There are hundreds of millions of orphans in the world who need someone to take care of them. In common usage\, an orphan is a child who has lost both parents. However\, some organizations\, including UNICEF and UNAIDS\, label children who have lost one parents as orphans\, too. The number of double orphans\, i.e. those who have lost both parents\, is relatively low in developed countries; the highest numbers of orphans exist in countries affected by extreme poverty\, wars\, and epidemics. Regions with the highest percentage of orphans are Africa (almost 12% of all children)\, Latin America & the Caribbean (about 7.5% of all children)\, and Asia (6.5% of all children). \nAccording to statistics\, every 19 seconds somewhere in the world\, a child is orphaned\, and 99% of orphans are never adopted. Most countries with high numbers of orphans usually don’t have a good system in place to support all orphaned children. Thousands of orphans across the globe live as street children devoid of parental care and vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Orphans raised in orphanages often struggle to adjust to adult life once released from the orphanage because they lack education\, resources\, and skills to support themselves. As a result\, many of them become homeless and commit crimes to survive\, or even end up committing suicide. \nSince governments of poor countries devastated by wars and epidemics are unable to provide orphans with proper care\, international organizations have to step in. There are a lot of organizations and programs supporting orphans worldwide. Two of them have established a World Orphans Day. World Orphans Day celebrated on April 20 was founded by Worldwide Organization for Charity (WOC)\, previously known as World Orphan Center. The organization is working to support orphans\, underprivileged children and widows with the ultimate goal of making them self-reliant through various support schemes\, ranging from coverage of living expenses to adoption. \nWorld Orphans Day celebrated on the second Monday of November was launched in 2006 by the Stars Foundation\, a Nashville-based organization comprised of the entertainment industry\, dignitaries\, and media and sports personalities that seeks to raise money to help orphans\, children in foster care\, street children\, and other vulnerable children. Both World Orphans Days aim to raise awareness about orphans worldwide and encourage people to support orphans any way they can. Of course\, giving an orphan a new loving family is the best way to change their life for the better\, but we realize that adoption isn’t for everyone. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Ogoni Nine were a group of nine activists from the Ogoni region of Nigeria who opposed the operating practices of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation. \nTheir members included outspoken author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa\, Saturday Dobee\, Nordu Eawo\, Daniel Gbooko\, Paul Levera\, Felix Nuate\, Baribor Bera\, Barinem Kiobel\, and John Kpuine (Tripathi\, p.189)\, who were executed by hanging in 1995 by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha and buried in Port Harcourt Cemetery. The executions provoked international condemnation and led to the increasing treatment of Nigeria as a pariah state until General Abacha’s mysterious death in 1998. Saro-Wiwa had previously been a critic of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation\, and had been imprisoned for a year prior to the executions in November 1995. The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. Oude boerenvelden met heggetjes en fruitbomen vormen het natuurgebied. Hier houdt de verborgen wilde kat zich op en zoeken dassen naar eten. Natuurfilmer Stijn ziet hoe de zeldzame hazelmuis als een soort aapje door deze heggen klautert. Langs een goed verstopte beek stuiten we op een steenvlieg die uitgestorven werd gewaand. Verderop kijken we hoe de zalm en forel de snelstromende Geul gebruiken. DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. Sagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. SUMMARY:Stop de uitbuiting! - Landelijke blokkade zuivelfabrieken FrieslandCampina
DESCRIPTION:Op 8 november 2025 voeren Extinction Rebellion Landbouw en XR Animal Justice Front acties bij vestigingen van FrieslandCampina in Noord-Brabant (Veghel)\, Friesland (Leeuwarden) en Zuid-Holland (Maasdam) met als slogan ‘Stop de uitbuiting!’. \nFrieslandCampina heeft onlangs een (vernieuwd) ‘Klimaatplan 2025’ opgesteld. In dit plan ontbreekt iedere urgentie. De plannen voor het terugdringen van de CO₂-uitstoot zijn volstrekt onvoldoende en er zijn geen concrete doelen voor natuurbehoud\, waterkwaliteit en dierenwelzijn. De wereldwijde  landbouw is goed voor 30 procent van de wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen. In Nederland veroorzaakt de zuivelsector daarnaast tal van ernstige milieuproblemen\, waaronder de stikstofcrisis en grove vervuiling van het grondwater. Om rond te komen worden boeren gedwongen om hun dieren krachtvoer te geven\, en op het land kunstmest en bestrijdingsmiddelen te gebruiken. Die hebben een desastreuze impact op mens\, dier en natuur. Om ons vee met soja te voeden worden bovendien massaal oerwouden gekapt. Voor de broodnodige verandering van dit destructieve systeem wordt de boer aangekeken\, maar die zit ook helemaal klem. Boeren worden steeds afhankelijker van grote bedrijven zoals FrieslandCampina die daardoor steeds meer macht krijgen. Linksom of rechtsom: de productie van zuivel moet drastisch omlaag. FrieslandCampina kan daarbij een voorbeeld nemen aan zuivelproducenten die volledig op de productie van plantaardige zuivel zijn overgestapt. Extinction Rebellion is het zat dat bedrijven uit de agro-industrie (“Big Agro”) zoals FrieslandCampina ongezien mens\, dier en natuur uitbuiten voor hun eigen winst en eist: \n\nStop de uitbuiting van miljoenen dieren\nStop de uitbuiting van natuur en milieu\nStop de uitbuiting van boeren\, in Nederland en daarbuiten\n\nDeze actie maakt deel uit van de lopende ‘Melk Moordt’-campagne van XR Animal Justice Front en is de aftrap van de nieuwe ‘Stop de uitbuiting’-campagne van XR Landbouw\, in samenwerking met lokale afdelingen van XR. Zolang de agro-industrie de macht houdt over onze voedselproductie\, zijn mens\, dier en natuur de dupe. SUMMARY:Bomen voor Amsterdam 2025 : Een boom voor jou\, een bos voor de stad
DESCRIPTION:De 7500 bomen die tijdens het Op de Ring festival 21 juni 2025 in het het Verjaardagbos op de A10 stonden\, gaan naar hun definitieve locatie. \nWeet je nog hoe heet het toen was? Deze groene rakkers zorgden voor de broodnodige verkoeling op het asfalt. Ze mochten na het feest even bijkomen bij de Riekerhaven in Zuid\, omgedoopt tot een tijdelijke bomencamping. Nu zoeken ze een blijvend thuis bij jou! Help ons bouwen aan een stad waar insecten\, vogels én mensen gelukkig van worden. Meer bomen in de stad zijn hard nodig want de hoeveelheid groen per Amsterdammer neemt nog steeds af. In totaal staan er 750 grote bomen\, die uiteindelijk in de stad geplant gaan worden. In de bakken waarin deze bomen staan\, groeien ook 10 kleinere boompjes per bak. Daarmee zijn er 7.500 boompjes beschikbaar\, en daar zijn inmiddels nog eens 2.500 extra bijgekomen. De in totaal 10.000 bomen\, die samen zorgen voor koelte\, schone lucht en een gezonder Amsterdam\, worden verdeeld tussen twee stichtingen: Trees For All en De Gezonde Stad\, die elk hun eigen aanpak hebben. \nLinks:\nDuizenden bomen van het Ringfeest worden uitgedeeld en geplant: “Het is hard werken”
