DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:The International Energy Agency (IEA) set out a range of demand-side actions that governments\, businesses and households can take to alleviate the economic impacts on consumers of the disruptions to oil markets stemming from the war in the Middle East. \nThe conflict has triggered the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market\, with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz\, which normally carries around 20% of global oil consumption\, reduced to a trickle. Around 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products typically transit the Strait. The loss of these flows has tightened markets significantly\, pushing crude oil prices above $100 per barrel and driving even sharper increases in refined products such as diesel\, jet fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Restoring transit through the Strait of Hormuz remains essential to stabilise global energy markets. In the meantime\, countries are acting on both supply and demand. On 11 March\, IEA Member countries agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves – the largest stock draw in the Agency’s history. However\, supply-side measures alone cannot fully offset the scale of the disruption. Addressing demand is a critical and immediate tool to reduce pressure consumers by improving affordability and supporting energy security. The IEA report ‘Sheltering from Oil Shocks‘ identifies ten measures that can be implemented quickly by governments\, businesses and households. These actions focus primarily on road transport\, which accounts for around 45% of global oil demand\, but also cover aviation\, cooking and industry. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Kikkerdag (World Frog Day) is een dag om bewustzijn de kweken voor kikkers (Anura) en andere amfibieën\, kikkerpopulaties worden bedreigd\, veel soorten dreigen te verdwijnen of zijn zelfs al uitgestorven. \nKikkers zijn een van de drie groepen van amfibieën\, naast de salamanders (Caudata) en de wormsalamanders (Gymnophiona). Kikkers zijn hiervan verreweg de grootste groep; van de ongeveer 8270 soorten amfibieën behoort grofweg 88% tot de kikkers. Er zijn tegenwoordig ruim 7300 verschillende soorten kikkers beschreven. Kikkers hebben een vrijwel wereldwijde verspreiding en leven in sterk uiteenlopende habitats. Kikkers behoren tot de gewervelde dieren\, ze hebben vier poten maar geen staart en verschillen hiermee van de meeste andere amfibieën. Alle kikkers hebben een afgeplat\, peervormig lichaam en uitpuilende ogen. De kop en bek zijn breed\, de lange achterpoten zijn sterk gespierd en goed ontwikkeld. Kikkers zijn de enige dieren die een kwaakblaas hebben en hiermee soortspecifieke geluiden maken om elkaar te lokken. Net als andere amfibieën zijn kikkers koudbloedig\, hierop is zowel de bloedsomloop als de ademhaling aangepast. \nEen aantal soorten houdt een zomerrust of winterslaap om erg warme respectievelijk koude jaargetijden te doorstaan. De ontwikkeling van de larve tot volwassen kikker is uniek binnen de gewervelden. Kikkers doorlopen een volledige metamorfose waarbij de larve er totaal anders uitziet dan de volwassen kikker. Kikkers eten een breed scala aan prooien\, meestal kleine dieren als insecten en andere ongewervelden. De grotere soorten eten soms kleine gewervelden. Kikkers hebben daarnaast vele natuurlijke vijanden zoals vissen\, vogels\, zoogdieren en reptielen. Veel soorten worden direct of indirect bedreigd door de mens\, een aantal soorten is hierdoor sterk bedreigd of uitgestorven. Sinds 1985 is het aantal beschreven amfibieën met meer dan een derde toegenomen\, dit geldt met name voor de kikkers. De indeling van de kikkers is door deze constante aanvoer van nieuwe inzichten sterk aan verandering onderhevig. DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C

Extinction Rebellion eist dat het kabinet zorgt voor een snelle en ruimhartige schadeafhandeling\, alle gasvelden direct permanent sluit\, geen nieuwe meer opent en verdere klimaatschade een halt toeroept. De meeste mensen denken dat er geen gas meer gewonnen wordt in Groningen\, maar niets is minder waar: van de 84 actieve gasvelden liggen er maar liefst 17 in Groningen en in de rest van het land dus ook nog 67. Gasboringen veroorzaken niet alleen scheuren in huizen\, cultureel erfgoed en bodemverzakkingen\, ze veroorzaken ook scheuren in de hoofden\, harten en lichamen van vele Groningers. In Groningen overlijden op basis van onderzoek van Gronings Perspectief jaarlijks naar schatting 16 mensen voortijdig als gevolg van ernstige gezondheidsklachten door de gaswinning.
