SUMMARY:Viking@50: 50 Years on Mars
DESCRIPTION:The Viking program consisted of a pair of identical American space probes\, Viking 1 and Viking 2 both launched in 1975\, and landed on Mars in 1976. \nThe mission effort began in 1968 and was managed by the NASA Langley Research Center. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter spacecraft which photographed the surface of Mars from orbit\, and a lander which studied the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. The Viking program grew from NASA’s earlier\, even more ambitious\, Voyager Mars program\, which was not related to the successful Voyager deep space probes of the late 1970s. Viking 1 was launched on August 20\, 1975\, and the second craft\, Viking 2\, was launched on September 9\, 1975\, both riding atop Titan IIIE rockets with Centaur upper stages. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19\, 1976\, with Viking 2 following on August 7. After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection\, the orbiters and landers detached; the landers then entered the Martian atmosphere and soft-landed at the sites that had been chosen. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20\, 1976\, more than two weeks before Viking 2‘s arrival in orbit. Viking 2 then successfully soft-landed on September 3. The orbiters continued imaging and performing other scientific operations from orbit while the landers deployed instruments on the surface. DESCRIPTION:On 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. \nChess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. Today there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nUnder initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. As an affordable and inclusive activity\, it can be exercised anywhere and played by all\, across the barriers of language\, age\, gender\, physical ability or social status. \nChess is a global game\, which promotes fairness\, inclusion and mutual respect\, and noting in this regard that it can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. Chess also offers important opportunities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals\, including strengthening education\, realizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and fostering inclusion\, tolerance\, mutual understanding and respect. \nLinks:\nWorld Chess Day

DESCRIPTION:The World Heritage Committee meets once a year for an ordinary session to discuss the management of existing World Heritage Sites\, and accept nominations by countries. \nExtraordinary meetings can be convened at the request of two-thirds of the state members. Meetings are held within the territory of state members of the World Heritage Committee at their invitation. Rotation between regions and cultures is a consideration for selection and the location for the next session is chosen by the committee at the end of each session. The World Heritage Committee is a committee of the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization that selects the sites to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites\, including the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger\, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It comprises representatives from 21 state parties that are elected by the General Assembly of States Parties for a four-year term. These parties vote on decisions and proposals related to the World Heritage Convention and World Heritage List. According to the World Heritage Convention\, a committee member’s term of office is six years. Geen geld\, maar iets van hun tijd. De dag waarop Mandela 92 jaar werd\, kon er worden teruggekeken op een leven waarin hij 67 jaar heeft ingezet voor mensenrechten en gelijkheid voor iedereen. Zowel als advocaat als in de tijd dat hij als politiek gevangene 27 jaar vastzat. Op voordracht van de Zuid-Afrikaanse ambassadeur Baso Sangqu is deze dag in 2010 door de Verenigde Naties\, resolutie A/RES/64/13\, officieel uitgeroepen. Nelson (Rolihlahla) Mandela (Mvezo\, 18 juli 1918 – Johannesburg\, 5 december 2013) was advocaat en was president van Zuid-Afrika van 1994 tot 1999. Hij ontving in 1993\, samen met Frederik Willem de Klerk\, de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede. Mandela wordt alom gerespecteerd om zijn volhardende strijd tegen de apartheid\, en was de eerste zwarte president van Zuid-Afrika. DESCRIPTION:De Kermisfestival Tilburg / Tilburgse Kermis is de grootste kermis in de Benelux en wordt gehouden in de Noord-Brabantse plaats Tilburg. \nEr staan jaarlijks tussen de 230 en 240 attracties uit binnen- en buitenland\, in een 4\,5 kilometer lang lint door het centrum van de stad. De kermis trekt jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen bezoekers en is daarmee een van de best bezochte evenementen van Nederland. Hoewel de kermis met de tijd is meegegaan en dus voor het merendeel uit moderne attracties bestaat is er ook plaats ingeruimd voor een nostalgische kermis. De Tilburgse kermis duurt tien dagen: hij eindigt op de laatste zondag van juli en start dus negen dagen eerder op vrijdag. Ieder jaar treden op de themadagen bekende artiesten uit binnen- en buitenland op. Op de eerste zondag is het tussen 11:00 en 14:00 Blauwe zondag. Dit is een speciale ‘prikkelarme’ periode: geluiden en muziek van attracties worden dan gedempt. Op maandag is het Roze Maandag\, een evenement voor homo- en biseksuelen\, lesbiennes en transgenders (LHBT‘ers)\, na een eerste nichtenavond in 1990 werd dit al snel het drukstbezochte onderdeel van de Tilburgse Kermis. Dit is een wetenschappelijk kader ontwikkeld door onderzoekers van de Radboud Universiteit. Zij onderzochten meer dan 400 ‘autocratische acties’ in landen waar de democratie afkalfde. De onderzoekers onderscheiden zeven strategieën waarmee democratisch gekozen leiders\, eenmaal aan de macht\, de democratie van binnenuit uithollen: ontwijking\, manipulatie\, infiltratie\, duplicatie\, restrictie\, verbod en delegitimering. Bij elke strategie volgt de aspirant-autocraat de letter van de wet\, maar niet de geest ervan. Dat maakt deze acties moeilijk te herkennen; de onderzoekers noemen dit ’tergende ambiguïteit’. De Democratie Monitor legde deze zeven strategieën naast nieuwsgebeurtenissen die we uit meer dan 1100 nieuwsbronnen verzamelden. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. Dit zure mengsel tast beton aan en de waterstofperoxide zorgt ervoor dat staal sneller roest. Met de actie sluit XR zich aan bij de Geef Tegengas-campagne tegen de bouw van het datacenter. Artificial intelligence\, the green transition and growing social complexity are transforming how we learn\, work and participate in society. To thrive in this changing landscape\, young people need more than technical skills alone. They need a balanced set of competencies that combines technical\, digital\, AI\, green\, social-emotional and civic skills with the human qualities that technology cannot replace. Under the theme “Skills for a shared future”\,  this year’s World Youth Skills Day activities will spotlight the urgent need for innovative youth skills programmes—initiatives that empower young people not only to adapt\, but to lead with empathy\, bridge cultural divides\, build resilience\, and actively shape a more sustainable and inclusive tomorrow. Youth unemployment remains a major economic and social challenge worldwide. According to the ILO’s Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024\, the global youth unemployment rate fell to 13% in 2023 – a 15-year low and below the pre-pandemic level of 13.8%. However\, recovery has been uneven: in the Arab States\, East Asia\, and South-East Asia\, rates were higher in 2023 than in 2019. Meanwhile\, one in five young people globally – and over a quarter of young women – were NEET (not in employment\, education\, or training)\, with young women’s NEET rate (28.1%) more than double that of young men (13.1%). Even for those who work\, decent jobs remain scarce. Over half of young workers are in informal employment\, and in low-income countries\, three in four hold only self-employment or temporary jobs. Investment in green and blue sectors could create 8.4 million youth jobs by 2030\, but these must come with decent working conditions – including fundamental rights like equal pay\, collective bargaining\, and protection from harassment. \nEducation and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability. TVET can equip youth with the skills required to access the world of work\, including skills for self-employment. TVET can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities\, increase productivity and increase wage levels. DESCRIPTION:World Orca Day is a celebration of the species orca (Orcinus orca)\, or killer whale\, is a toothed whale and the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. \nThe only extant species in the genus Orcinus\, it is recognizable by its distinct pigmentation; being mostly black on top\, white on the bottom and having recognizable white eye patches. A cosmopolitan species\, it inhabits a wide range of marine environments\, from Arctic to Antarctic regions to tropical seas\, but is more commonly documented in temperate or cooler coastal waters. Scientists have proposed dividing the global population into races\, subspecies\, or possibly even species. Orcas are apex predators with a diverse diet. Individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey\, including bony fish\, sharks\, rays\, and marine mammals such as seals\, dolphins\, and whales. They are highly social\, with some populations forming stable matrilineal family groups (pods). Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors\, often unique to specific groups and passed down from generation to generation\, are considered to be manifestations of animal culture. The most studied populations are off the west coast of North America\, which include fish-eating “residents”\, mammal-eating “transients”\, and offshores. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the orca’s conservation status as data deficient as multiple orca types may represent distinct species. Some local populations are threatened or endangered due to prey depletion\, habitat loss\, pollution (by PCBs)\, captures for marine parks\, and conflicts with fisheries. In late 2005\, the southern resident orcas were added to the U.S. Endangered Species list. Orcas have been revered by indigenous peoples from regions including the Pacific Northwest\, Australia and Peru\, while Western cultures have historically feared them. They have been taken by whalers when stocks of larger species have declined. The orca’s image took a positive turn in the 1960s\, due to greater public and scientific awareness and their display in captivity. Since then\, orcas have been trained to perform in marine parks\, a practice that has been criticized as unethical.
