Met gevaar voor eigen leven protesteren ze\, voor mensenrechten\, waardigheid\, en vrijheid. De Iraanse autoriteiten reageren meedogenloos. Ze spelen met mensenlevens alsof het niets is. Meer dan 2000 demonstranten zijn doodgeschoten. En wie opgepakt wordt\, kan mogelijk de doodstraf krijgen. Ook sloten de autoriteiten het internet af. Het is een wanhopige poging om de demonstranten af te sluiten van elkaar en hun eigen misdaden voor de buitenwereld te verbergen. Ondanks dit alles houden de demonstraties aan. Maar de situatie is kritiek. Voer de druk op bij de Iraanse autoriteiten. DESCRIPTION:Almost eight years of observations using the Hubble Space Telescope\, the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Arizona\, and Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands\, Spain\, provided sufficient evidence of a second star’s ‘wake’ in the guise of a high-density trail of gas in Betelgeuse’s bloated atmosphere. \nA small companion star has been confirmed\, revealed by the wake it leaves as it plows through the red giant’s atmosphere. Ignoring interference from the occasional dusty sneeze\, Betelgeuse’s light seems to vary according to two distinct cycles. One lasts about 400 days and has been linked to internal pulsations. The second\, however\, lasts around 2\,100 days\, and has been much harder to account for. The leading hypothesis suggests a small\, dim companion star on a tight orbit around the red giant\, with observations culminating in a likely detection last July. Now\, Betelgeuse’s buddy has finally been confirmed\, several months after its proposed name\, Siwarha\, was accepted. DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. \nGlobal health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. In the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services\, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise\, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health\, animal health and plant health\, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. \nWe need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual\, community and State\, and regional and international organizations\, in all stages of epidemic management\, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. The United Nations system\, in particular the World Health Organization\, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics\, in accordance with its mandate\, and in supporting national\, regional and international efforts to prevent\, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda. We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges\, especially women\, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers. UN member states commit to ensure inclusive\, equal and non-discriminatory participation\, with special attention to those\, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection. The UN General Assembly invites all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other global\, regional and subregional organizations\, the private sector and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities\, through education and awareness-raising activities\, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of\, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics. \nLinks:\nDay of Epidemic Preparedness

DESCRIPTION:We weten maar weinig van planten die midden in de winter bloeien\, daarom brengt Tuintelling ze samen met jou in kaart tijdens de Eindejaars plantenjacht. Jaag je mee? \nMidden in de winter zijn er verrassend veel bloeiende plantensoorten te vinden. Sommige kunnen het hele jaar door bloeien\, andere weten hun najaarsbloei te rekken wanneer er geen serieuze nachtvorst is. En als het weer meezit dan komen de voorjaarsbloeiers al uit op zonnige en beschutte plekken. Kies een moment in de telperiode. Noteer gedurende één uur alle wilde en verwilderde planten die in je tuin in bloei staan (Tuinplanten tellen niet mee). De bloemen kunnen trouwens heel klein zijn\, dus het is soms echt even zoeken. Mocht het in deze periode tijdelijk heel koud zijn\, waardoor er geen planten bloeien\, kijk dan nog een keer als het minder koud is. Planten kunnen soms heel snel weer in bloei staan. Geef alleen bloeiende planten door. Je hoeft geen aantallen te noteren. Deel je vondsten op de Facebook-pagina van FLORON of van jezelf. DESCRIPTION:Op de 24e van elke maand samenkomst om 18:00 samen op het Spui tegenover het Lieverdje voor een einde aan oorlog en herdenking slachtoffers. \nMet sprekers\, dichters en muziek wordt iedere maand geprotesteerd tegen het voortduren van de bloedige oorlog in Oekraïne – en Gaza – en gepleit voor een wapenstilstand\, diplomatie en onderhandelingen. Met twee minuten stilte herdenking de slachtoffers aan beide kanten. Luisteren naar een update over de stand van zaken aan het front. Na afloop samen “Dona Nobis Pacem – Geef Ons Vrede” zingen. Guido van Leemput – schrijver van ‘De gelaagde oorlog’ en medeoprichter van Stop de Oorlog Amsterdam – geeft zijn maandelijkse analyse van de situatie aan het front én de onderhandelingstafels. Nog niet eerder was een einde van het massale bloedvergieten zo dichtbij. Komt er een vrede in het belang van de Oekraïense en Russische bevolking? Of kijken we naar oligarchen en kapitalisten die op een nietsontziende manier de wereld opnieuw aan het verdelen zijn? De bijeenkomsten op het Spui worden live uitgezonden door Radio Patapoe. DESCRIPTION:More than two-thirds of the world’s population accessed the Internet in 2023\, connectivity has changed lives and brought countless benefits\, but the digital world also brings significant risks. \nCybercriminals exploit online systems through malware\, ransomware and hacking to steal money\, data\, and other valuable information\, and they use information and communication technology to facilitate other crimes\, recruit victims\, perpetrate scams and launder money. The threat is only growing.  Transnational organized criminal groups have set up scam farms\, running billion-dollar criminal enterprises and defrauding victims from around the world through online romance schemes\, investment fraud and other scams. At the same time\, these criminal groups are luring people through online platforms and trafficking them to work in the scam centres. Prevention is the best defence against online threats\, and the international community needs urgently to raise greater awareness of the dangers of online fraud\, recruitment and trafficking. International cooperation must also be strengthened as cybercrime and online scams are cross-border threats\, exploiting scam victims in the most developed countries and trafficking victims in the most impoverished\, and Member States must work together in order to effectively prevent and address such crimes\, and protect people. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the UN response to cybercrime with training and support to countries across the world. Drawing upon the Office’s specialized expertise on fighting transnational organized crime and corruption and supporting criminal justice systems\, UNODC provides technical assistance to strengthen prevention\, reform legislative reform\, build and upskill law enforcement capabilities and improve international cooperation. \nLinks:\nDay against Cybercrime

DESCRIPTION:The festivus pole\nFestivus (/ˈfɛstɪvəs/) is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23 as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. Originally created by author Daniel O’Keefe\, Festivus entered popular culture after it was made the focus of the 1997 Seinfeld episode “The Strike“\, which O’Keefe’s son\, Dan O’Keefe\, co-wrote. \nThe non-commercial holiday’s celebration\, as depicted on Seinfeld\, occurs on December 23 and includes a Festivus dinner\, an unadorned aluminum Festivus pole\, practices such as the “airing of grievances” and “feats of strength”\, and the labeling of easily explainable events as “Festivus miracles”. The episode refers to it as “a Festivus for the rest of us”. It has been described both as a parody holiday festival and as a form of playful consumer resistance. Journalist Allen Salkin describes it as “the perfect secular theme for an all-inclusive December gathering”. \nLinks:\nHappy Festivus… for the Rest of Us!

SUMMARY:Meteorenzwerm Ursiden in december 2025
DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm Ursiden bereikt op dinsdag 23 december 2025\, rond 00:00\, zijn maximum. De meteoren van de Ursiden zijn niet erg opvallend\, wanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 12 meteoren per uur vallen. \nDe radiant van de zwerm staat rond 09:00 in het hoogste punt aan de hemel\, op 67° boven de horizon. Het beste moment om Ursiden waar te nemen is op 23 december rond 04:30. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 55° boven de horizon\, in het noordnoordoosten. Door de matige omstandigheden zijn er in onze streken dan vermoedelijk maar circa 2–6 meteoren per uur van deze zwerm te zien. In totaal zijn er\, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren\, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 11–19 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. Op een donkere locatie zijn ongeveer vijf keer zoveel meteoren te zien als in dichtbevolkt gebied. De Maan stoort niet. Rond 08:00 gaat het schemeren en om 08:47 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar\, maar de Ursiden zijn bijzonder scherp gepiekt\, en de zwerm duurt niet veel langer dan 16 uur. Een dag voor of na het maximum is nog slechts 14% van het piekaantal meteoren per uur te zien. De snelheden van de meteoren van de Ursiden zijn gemiddeld: zo’n 35 km/s\, dat is circa 126.000 km/uur. \nLinks:\nMeteorenzwerm Ursiden in december

DESCRIPTION:De winter is een van de vier seizoenen in de gematigde en polaire streken. \nHet afwisselen van de winter met de andere seizoenen wordt veroorzaakt door de schuine stand van de aardas. In de winter staat op het noordelijk halfrond de aardas van de zon af en in de zomer juist naar de zon toe. Op het zuidelijk halfrond is dit omgekeerd\, zodat de winter zich daar juist afspeelt tijdens de zomer van het noordelijk halfrond. Het meest kenmerkend aan de winter is hierdoor\, behalve de in vergelijking met andere seizoenen lage temperaturen\, de korte dagduur. Een bepaalde winter kan worden aangeduid met twee opeenvolgende jaartallen\, zoals ‘winter 2024/2025’. Als er maar één jaartal staat dan is het het jaar waarin de winter begint. Zoals ook met de andere seizoenen\, wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen de meteorologische en de astronomische winter. \nDe astronomische winter begint op het noordelijk halfrond rond 21 december. De zon staat dan ’s middags aan de Steenbokskeerkring loodrecht aan de hemel. De naam is afgeleid van het sterrenbeeld Steenbok dat rond midden december begint. Deze dag valt daarom ook samen met de kortste dag op het noordelijk halfrond. De astronomische winter eindigt meestal op 20 maart\, soms op 21 maart\, wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de evenaar loodrecht aan de hemel staat (equinox). Hierna begint de lente. Op het zuidelijk halfrond begint de astronomische winter rond 21 juni\, wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de Kreeftskeerkring loodrecht aan de hemel staat. De naam is afgeleid van het sterrenbeeld Kreeft die rond midden juni begint op het zuidelijk halfrond en eindigt meestal op 23 september\, soms op 22 september wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de evenaar loodrecht aan de hemel staat. Omdat de Aarde op 3 januari het perihelium bereikt en het dichtst bij de zon staat (ongeveer 147\,1 miljoen km ofwel 0\,983 AE) en op 5 juli het verst van de zon staat (ongeveer 152\,1 miljoen km ofwel 1\,017 AE is de noordelijke winter minder koud en korter dan de zuidelijke winter. \nLinks:\nUitleg over Winter

DESCRIPTION:Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma\, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu. \nIn het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). \nAl zeventig jaar klinkt de natuur op de zondagse radio. In 1955 startte de VARA met het programma ‘Weer of geen weer’ dat later werd opgevolgd door ‘Vroege Vogels’. We blikken terug met mediahistoricus Bert Wijfjes en verslaggever Henny Radstaak. Onbekende uitgestorven soort spitssnuitdolfijn ontdekt in de Westerschelde. Op de Wadden gaat het aantal pups van grijze zeehonden op Griend iedere winter omhoog\, kauwen op het dak van Arnhemse Gelredome\, kwelwater\, Mirasaurus en natuurlijk de fenolijn. DESCRIPTION:Dalek remembrance is on the 21 December every year\, this date was chosen because on the 21 December 1963\, the Daleks (/ˈdɑːlɪks/ (listen) DAH-leks) first made their appearence on screen and into history. \nThe Daleks are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The Daleks were conceived by science-fiction writer Terry Nation and first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks\, in shells designed by Raymond Cusick. Drawing inspiration from the Nazis\, Nation portrayed the Daleks as violent\, merciless and pitiless cyborg aliens\, who demand total conformity to their will and are bent on the conquest of the universe and the extermination of what they see as inferior races. Collectively they are the greatest enemies of Doctor Who’s protagonist\, the Time Lord known as “the Doctor.” During the second year of the original Doctor Who programme (1963-1989)\, the Daleks developed their own form of time travel. In the beginning of the second Doctor Who TV series that debuted in 2005\, it was established that the Daleks had engaged in a Time War against the Time Lords that affected much of the universe and altered parts of history. \nIn the programme’s narrative\, the planet Skaro suffered a thousand-year war between two societies: the Kaleds and the Thals. During this time-period\, many natives of Skaro became badly mutated by fallout from nuclear weapons and chemical warfare. The Kaled government believed in genetic purity and swore to “exterminate the Thals” for being inferior. Believing his own society was becoming weak and that it was his duty to create a new master race from the ashes of his people\, the Kaled scientist Davros genetically modified several Kaleds into squid-like life-forms he called Daleks\, removing “weaknesses” such as mercy and sympathy while increasing aggression and survival-instinct. He then integrated them with tank-like robotic shells equipped with advanced technology based on the same life-support system he himself used since being burned and blinded by a nuclear attack. His creations became intent on dominating the universe by enslaving or purging all “inferior” non-Dalek life. The Daleks are the show’s most popular and famous villains and their returns to the series over the decades have often gained media attention. Their frequent declaration “Exterminate!” has become common usage.
