DESCRIPTION:De totale zonsverduistering van 12 augustus 2026 zal voornamelijk over het noordpoolgebied en de Atlantische Oceaan trekken\, maar ook over Rusland\, Groenland\, het westen van IJsland\, het noorden van Spanje en het noordoosten van Portugal. \nDe Maan schuift dan vanaf de Aarde gezien precies voor de Zon langs. Het punt met maximale totaliteit ligt op zee vlak voor de westkust van IJsland dicht bij het plaatsje Patreksfjörður en duurt 2 minuten en 18 seconden. Bij helder weer zal vanuit Nederland en België de hele gedeeltelijke zonsverduistering zichtbaar zijn. Daar zien we de eclips als een hap die in eerste instantie uit de rechterkant van de Zon wordt genomen en steeds groter wordt. Halverwege de verduistering bevindt die hap zich aan de onderkant\, en tegen het einde van de eclips verdwijnt deze aan de linkerkant van de Zon\, de verduistering duurt 1\,8 uur. Tijdens het maximum van de eclips\, om 20:11 uur\, zal 90% van de diameter van de Zon\, ofwel 88% van haar oppervlakte\, bedekt zijn. De Zon staat op dat moment 8° boven de westnoordwestelijke horizon en het maximum van de eclips is in onze streken redelijk goed zichtbaar. Aangezien de Maan ten zuiden langs de Zon trekt\, wordt de verduistering groter naarmate je je zuidelijker bevindt. Zie de lokale gegevens voor een aantal plaatsen in de Benelux. Een bedekking van 88% is niet voldoende om het donker te maken in onze streken\, maar meer dan genoeg om te worden opgemerkt met het blote oog (zonder vergroting\, maar met bescherming). Daarnaast heeft de reductie aan zonlicht invloed op bijvoorbeeld de energieopwekking door zonnepanelen. Elders is deze eclips te zien als een totale zonsverduistering. De verduistering maakt deel uit van de Saros 126 zonsverduisteringserie. The administration has justified the order by contending that any effort by the ICC to investigate nationals of the United States or of certain allied countries constitutes a “national emergency” and specifically references the court’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The result is an attack against independent international judicial actors and mechanisms. DESCRIPTION:The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. \nThe show had the same permanent presenter\, Patrick Moore\, from its first broadcast on 24 April 1957 until 7 January 2013. The latter date was a posthumous broadcast\, which followed Moore’s death on 9 December 2012. This made it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history. Many early episodes are missing\, either because the tapes were wiped\, thrown out\, or because the episode was broadcast live and never recorded in the first place. Beginning with the 3 February 2013 edition\, the show was co-presented by Lucie Green and Chris Lintott. Since December 2013 Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been a presenter. The programme’s opening and closing theme music is “At the Castle Gate”\, from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande\, written in 1905 by Jean Sibelius\, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. \nThis episode:\nProfessor Brian Cox joins the team to explore one the greatest current mysteries in astronomy – little red dots. Discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)\, they have upended everything we thought we knew about black holes and the evolution of the universe itself. \nAstronomical monsters\, with the power to devour stars and even to stop time itself\, black holes have both fascinated and troubled physicists for decades. Their study has led to breakthroughs in our understanding of gravity\, quantum mechanics and even precision manufacturing. \nThe journey begins with black holes 101\, as Chris Lintott and Brian Cox discuss what they are. And as it turns out\, that is a harder question to answer than you might think. Distortions in space-time. Regions of infinite density. Gateways to other universes. The end of time. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm η-Eridaniden bereikt op maandag 10 augustus 2026\, rond 14:00\, zijn maximum. \nWanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 5 meteoren per uur vallen. Rond 07:30 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 25°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om η-Eridaniden waar te nemen is op 11 augustus rond 04:00. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 12° boven de zuidoostelijke horizon; niet erg gunstig. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 21–32 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. Op een goed donkere locatie zijn ongeveer 20% meer meteoren te zien dan in een grote stad. De Maan komt om 03:58 op\, is voor ongeveer 4% verlicht en stoort niet. Rond 05:45 gaat het schemeren en om 06:17 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 4 dagen rondom het maximum ruim de helft van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur van de η-Eridaniden te zien. Tot 3 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Probeer dus ook enkele nachten voor en na het maximum meteoren waar te nemen. Wel is iedere dag die je eerder voor het maximum\, of later na het maximum waarneemt het aantal meteoren dat zichtbaar is circa 30% kleiner. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. Janine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:DEF CON (also written as DEFCON\, Defcon\, or DC) is a hacker convention held annually in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nThe first DEF CON took place in June 1993 and today many attendees at DEF CON include computer security professionals\, journalists\, lawyers\, federal government employees\, security researchers\, students\, and hackers with a general interest in software\, computer architecture\, hardware modification\, conference badges\, and anything else that can be “hacked”. The event consists of several tracks of speakers about computer and hacking-related subjects\, as well as cyber-security challenges and competitions (known as hacking wargames). Contests held during the event are extremely varied and can range from creating the longest Wi-Fi connection to finding the most effective way to cool a beer in the Nevada heat. Other contests\, past and present\, include lockpicking\, robotics-related contests\, art\, slogan\, coffee wars\, scavenger hunt\, and Capture the Flag. Capture the Flag (CTF) is perhaps the best known of these contests and is a hacking competition where teams of hackers attempt to attack and defend computers and networks using software and network structures. DESCRIPTION:In 1945 voerden de Verenigde Staten in Japan twee aanvallen met een kernbom uit. \nOp 6 augustus werd de bom “Little Boy” boven de Japanse havenstad Hiroshima tot ontploffing gebracht. Drie dagen later werd een tweede bombardement uitgevoerd\, nu met de bom “Fat Man” boven de stad Nagasaki. Drie dagen later besloot de hoogste Japanse leider\, keizer Hirohito\, tot de onvoorwaardelijke overgave van Japan. Ook al heeft de keizer er nooit met een woord over gesproken\, werd aangenomen dat de twee atoombommen de reden waren voor de capitulatie van het Japanse Keizerrijk. Nog steeds wordt geregeld beweerd en door menigeen geloofd dat de dood van meer dan 210.000 anderen (waaronder 38.000 kinderen)\, grotendeels burgers – noodzakelijk en gerechtvaardigd was. Om de Tweede Wereldoorlog (WOII) te beëindigen en daarmee juist veel leed te besparen\, onder andere vanwege de voor november 1945 geplande Amerikaanse invasie. Dit frame berust grotendeels op mythes. Natuurlijk droegen de bombardementen van de VS bij aan de uiteindelijke overgave van Japan\, op 15 augustus 1945. Maar historici zien de deelname van de Sovjet-Unie aan de strijd tegen Japan vanaf 9 augustus dat jaar doorgaans als een (veel) belangrijker motief. Met name door de oorlogsverklaring van de Sovjet-Unie zag de politieke en militaire leiding in Tokio geen heil meer in voorzetting van de strijd. Dit gaf keizer Hirohito toentertijd zelf ook aan. Tot dan hoopte zijn kabinet dat de Sovjet-Unie diplomatiek nog een rol kon spelen om de oorlog te beëindigen. Op 2 september 1945 gaven de Japanners zich formeel over door aan boord van het Amerikaanse slagschip USS Missouri\, gelegen in de baai van Tokio\, de capitulatie-overeenkomst te ondertekenen. Hiermee kwam er officieel een einde aan WOII. Op een open veld dat is ontstaan ​door de explosie van de atoombom werd het Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park gebouwd. Elk jaar wordt daar op 6 augustus (Atomic Bomb Day) de Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony gehouden. Aanwezige zijn overlevenden\, nabestaanden\, familieleden en vertegenwoordigers van verschillende landen. De herdenkingsceremonie begint om 08:00 (lokale tijd)\, tijdens de ceremonie wordt er onder andere een gezamenlijk gebed voor wereldvrede gehouden. When a transit country is itself a developing economy—often the case—intraregional trade remains modest. We are at a pivotal moment for the 32 LLDCs across Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and South America. Home to over 600 million people\, LLDCs face steep development hurdles due to lack of sea access\, geographical isolation\, and trade costs that are 30% higher than those of coastal countries. To spotlight these challenges\, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming August 6 as the International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries.
