DESCRIPTION:In de nacht van 9 op 10 augustus 2024 hebben 7 actievoerders van Extinction Rebellion (XR) de sluizen bij IJmuiden geblokkeerd en protesteren daarmee tegen de aankomst van cruiseschip Jewel of the Seas en tegen de enorme impact op het klimaat van deze mega vervuiler. \nDeze actie is een directe aanklacht tegen de schandalige vervuiling veroorzaakt door de cruisevaart. Ze hebben de aankomst van het gigantische cruiseschip\, de Jewel of the Seas\, doelbewust tegengehouden. XR eist\, te midden van de verwoestende klimaat- en ecologische crisis\, een onmiddellijke en totale stopzetting van de destructieve cruise-industrie. De enorme passagiersschepen die soms bekendstaan als “cruisezillas” worden groter dan ooit. Volgens nieuw onderzoek is gebleken dat ’s werelds grootste cruiseschepen sinds 2000 in omvang zijn verdubbeld. Cruiseschepen hebben in 2022 17% meer koolstofdioxide uitgepompt dan in 2019\, zo blijkt uit het rapport en de methaanuitstoot steeg in dezelfde periode met 500%. Stefan Gössling\, een professor aan de Linnaeus University in Zweden die toerisme en de klimaatcrisis bestudeert\, zei dat cruiseschepen een ondergeschikte rol speelden in het wereldwijde toerisme\, maar dat “bijna geen enkele vorm van toerisme energie-intensiever is dan cruises.” Het cruiseschip Jewel of the Seas die geblokkeerd wordt\, is met 12 passagiersdekken\, een lengte van 293\,2 meter\, een breedte van 39\,8 meter\, 2110 passagiers en 858 crewleden\, geen uitzondering op de regel. We weten al lang dat cruiseschepen schade toebrengen aan het milieu\, maar het is ook belangrijk om ook de impact op de menselijke gezondheid in dat plaatje te verwerken. DESCRIPTION:On 1 November 2022\, amendments to the MARPOL regulation Annex I (addition of a new regulation 43A) entered into force\, introducing a prohibition on the use and carriage for use as fuel of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by ships in Arctic waters on and after 1 July 2024. \nThe prohibition covers the use and carriage for use as fuel of oils having a density at 15°C higher than 900 kg/m3 or a kinematic viscosity at 50°C higher than 180 mm2/s. Ships engaged in securing the safety of ships\, or in search and rescue operations\, and ships dedicated to oil spill preparedness and response are exempted. Ships which meet certain construction standards with regard to oil fuel tank protection need to comply on and after 1 July 2029. A Party to MARPOL with a coastline bordering Arctic waters may temporarily waive the requirements for ships flying its flag while operating in waters subject to that Party’s sovereignty or jurisdiction\, up to 1 July 2029. The MEPC has adopted a resolution which urges Member States and ship operators to voluntarily use distillate or other cleaner alternative fuels or methods of propulsion that are safe for ships and could contribute to the reduction of Black Carbon emissions from ships when operating in or near the Arctic. Zo promoot de EU groei van de lucht- en scheepvaart\, terwijl dat juist een leefbare toekomst om zeep helpt. Als het aan de Europese Unie ligt\, komen de nieuwste vliegtuigen en schepen op hun groene lijst. Zo moedigen ze pensioenfondsen en banken aan om ons geld in een vervuilende\, fossiele vloot te stoppen. Dit is greenwashing op het hoogste niveau. Een coalitie van klimaat- en juridische organisaties en mensen door heel Europa komt in actie en starten een procedure om de Europese Commissie te dwingen opnieuw naar hun besluit te kijken.
