SUMMARY:Walvisteldag 2024
\nLinks:\nWalvisteldag

SUMMARY:Formation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation lower limb is critically dependent on Atlantic-Arctic mixing - publication
DESCRIPTION:Deep-water formation in the eastern Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (eSPNA) and Nordic Seas is crucial for maintaining the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)\, of consequence for global climate. \nHowever\, it is still uncertain which processes determine the deep-water formation and how much Atlantic and Arctic waters respectively contribute to the lower limb. To address this\, the reseachers used Lagrangian trajectories to diagnose a global eddy-resolving ocean model that agrees well with recent observations highlighting the eSPNA as a primary source of the AMOC lower limb. Comprised of 72% Atlantic waters and 28% Arctic waters\, the density and depth of the AMOC lower limb is critically dependent on Atlantic-Arctic mixing\, primarily in the vicinity of Denmark Strait. In contrast\, Atlantic waters gaining density through air-sea interaction along the eastern periphery of Nordic Seas and not entering the Arctic Ocean make a negligible contribution to the lower limb. \nLinks:\nFormation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation lower limb is critically dependent on Atlantic-Arctic mixing \nPredicting the contribution of climate change on North Atlantic underwater sound propagation – publication

SUMMARY:Dwellers in the Deep: Biological Consequences of Dark Oxygen - publication
DESCRIPTION:Scientists have discovered “dark oxygen” being produced in the deep ocean\, apparently by lumps of metal on the seafloor. \nAbout half the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. But\, before this discovery\, it was understood that it was made by marine plants photosynthesising – something that requires sunlight. Here\, at depths of 5km\, where no sunlight can penetrate\, the oxygen appears to be produced by naturally occurring metallic “nodules” which split seawater – H2O – into hydrogen and oxygen. Several mining companies have plans to collect these nodules\, which marine scientists fear could disrupt the newly discovered process – and damage any marine life that depends on the oxygen they make. \nLinks:\nEvidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor – publication \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \nOxygen discovery defies knowledge of the deep ocean

SUMMARY:Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor - publication
DESCRIPTION:Deep-seafloor organisms consume oxygen\, which can be measured by in situ benthic chamber experiments. \nThe writers of the article “Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor” report such experiments at the polymetallic nodule-covered abyssal seafloor in the Pacific Ocean in which oxygen increased over two days to more than three times the background concentration\, which from ex situ incubations we attribute to the polymetallic nodules. Given high voltage potentials (up to 0.95 V) on nodule surfaces\, the writers hypothesize that seawater electrolysis may contribute to this dark oxygen production. \nLinks:\nManganknollen : Sauerstoff aus der Tiefsee \nAgenda – Dwellers in the Deep: Biological Consequences of Dark Oxygen – publication \nAgenda – 29th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part II (TV ISA Web TV) \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities

SUMMARY:Protection of the Arctic from heavy grade oils / MARPOL regulation 43A - coming into effect
DESCRIPTION:On 1 November 2022\, amendments to the MARPOL regulation Annex I (addition of a new regulation 43A) entered into force\, introducing a prohibition on the use and carriage for use as fuel of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by ships in Arctic waters on and after 1 July 2024. \nThe prohibition covers the use and carriage for use as fuel of oils having a density at 15°C higher than 900 kg/m3 or a kinematic viscosity at 50°C higher than 180 mm2/s. Ships engaged in securing the safety of ships\, or in search and rescue operations\, and ships dedicated to oil spill preparedness and response are exempted. Ships which meet certain construction standards with regard to oil fuel tank protection need to comply on and after 1 July 2029. A Party to MARPOL with a coastline bordering Arctic waters may temporarily waive the requirements for ships flying its flag while operating in waters subject to that Party’s sovereignty or jurisdiction\, up to 1 July 2029. The MEPC has adopted a resolution which urges Member States and ship operators to voluntarily use distillate or other cleaner alternative fuels or methods of propulsion that are safe for ships and could contribute to the reduction of Black Carbon emissions from ships when operating in or near the Arctic. The resolution encourages Member States to commence addressing the threat to the Arctic from Black Carbon emissions\, and report on measures and best practices to reduce Black Carbon emissions from shipping. \nLinks:\nShipping in polar waters \nHFO ban in Arctic waters effective from 2024 \nVerbod op stookolie rond de Noordpool is een historisch besluit

SUMMARY:#SaveOurOcean #WorldOceansDay / Wereld Oceanen Dag 2024
DESCRIPTION:World Ocean Day is an international day that takes place annually on 8 June. \nThe concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. World Oceans Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, and fosters public interest in the management of the ocean and its resources. The day is marked in a variety of ways\, including launching new campaigns and initiatives\, special events at aquariums and zoos\, outdoor explorations\, aquatic and beach cleanups\, educational and conservation action programs\, art contests\, film festivals\, and sustainable seafood events. Youth have been playing an increasingly important role since 2015. The World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council has been helping lead conservation awareness and action efforts globally since 2016. \nLinks:\nWorld Oceans Day \nWorld Oceans Day 8 June \nWorld Oceans Day 2020 – YouTube afspeellijst \nWorld Whale Day / Wereld Walvisdag \nWorld Oceans Day / Wereld Oceanen Dag \n7 ocean mysteries scientists haven’t solved yet \n2022 UN Ocean Conference \n5 Actions You can Take to #SaveOurOcean \nSeascape: the state of our oceans

SUMMARY:World Aquatic Animal Day / Wereld Waterdierendag 2024
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nWorld Aquatic Animal Day is an annual day dedicated to aquatic animals. The event—launched for the first time on April 3\, 2020—is a project of the Aquatic Animal Law Initiative and the Animal Law Clinic at the Center for Animal Law Studies. \nEach year\, students take the lead at raising global awareness about these often forgotten nonhuman animals. Aquatic animals play a critical role in our societies and ecosystems. They are important not only as a group\, but also as valuable and exciting individuals with intrinsic worth. By “aquatic animals”\, we mean not only fish\, but also a myriad of other animals that live in water for most of their life: amphibians\, marine mammals\, crustaceans\, reptiles\, molluscs\, aquatic birds\, aquatic insects and even animals such as starfish and corals. Despite this\, aquatic animals are widely used and abused around the world and they face a multitude of different threats. There is an urgent need to give aquatic animals the proper consideration they deserve. Through law\, policy\, education\, advocacy and good stewardship of the earth\, our efforts to raise awareness of the plight of aquatic animals must rise to meet the immense challenges they now face. We must also consider our interactions with aquatic animals\, our treatment of them\, and the often-devastating impacts we are having on them and their habitats. On April 3rd each year\, please join us in celebrating these creatures and calling for action to protect aquatic animals through education\, law\, policy\, outreach and other avenues. With a different focus each year\, we will\, together\, highlight these issues and elevate their status. \nLinks:\nWorld Aquatic Animal Day \nKeeping aquatic animals off your plate is a great step in supporting sealife

SUMMARY:Predicting the contribution of climate change on North Atlantic underwater sound propagation - publication
DESCRIPTION:Since the industrial revolution\, oceans have become substantially noisier\, according to research by the sea research institute NIOZ\, University of Utrecht\, TNO and IMAU. \nThe noise increase is mainly caused by increased shipping\, resource exploration\, and infrastructure development affecting marine life at multiple levels\, including behavior and physiology. Together with increasing anthropogenic noise\, climate change is altering the thermal structure of the oceans\, which in turn might affect noise propagation. During this century\, we are witnessing an increase in seawater temperature and a decrease in ocean pH. Ocean acidification will decrease sound absorption at low frequencies (<10 kHz)\, enhancing long-range sound propagation. At the same time\, temperature changes can modify the sound speed profile\, leading to the creation or disappearance of sound ducts in which sound can propagate over large distances. The worldwide effect of climate change was explored for the winter and summer seasons using the (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098\, projected) atmospheric and seawater temperature\, salinity\, pH and wind speed as input. Using numerical modelling\, we here explore the impact of climate change on underwater sound propagation. \n \nThe future climate variables were taken from a Community Earth System Model v2 (CESM2) simulations forced under the concentration-driven SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. The sound modeling results show\, for future climate change scenarios\, a global increase of sound speed at different depths (5\, 125\, 300\, and 640 m) except for the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea\, where in the upper 125 m sound speed will decrease by as much as 40 m s−1. This decrease in sound speed results in a new sub-surface duct in the upper 200 m of the water column allowing ship noise to propagate over large distances (>500 km). In the case of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean\, this sub-surface duct will only be present during winter\, leading to similar total mean square pressure level (SPLtot) values in the summer for both (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098). We observed a strong and similar correlation for the two climate change scenarios\, with an increase of the top 200 m SPLtot and a slowdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) leading to an increase of SPLtot at the end of the century by 7 dB. \nLinks:\nMeer CO2 in de lucht zorgt voor meer lawaai onder water
