SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Abrupt Gulf Stream path changes are a precursor to a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation - publication
DESCRIPTION:The Gulf stream is moving north – and it could be an early warning sign; while this isn’t “The Day After Tomorrow\,” it’s still cause for concern. \nThe Gulf Stream\, that vital ribbon of warmth surging across the North Atlantic\, appears to be drifting northward. If this trend continues\, it could provide further evidence that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is losing strength and nearing collapse as global temperatures rise. The Gulf Stream is just one piece of the AMOC\, although the two terms are often used interchangeably in casual conversation. The latter is the mother of ocean current systems in the Atlantic\, sometimes known as the “conveyor belt of the ocean\,” that transports warm\, salty water from the tropics northward towards Europe. Meanwhile\, the Gulf Stream is a western boundary current system that’s part of the upper and northward-flowing branch of this oceanic engine. Scientists are becoming increasingly concerned that warming ocean temperatures and melting ice from Greenland could be pushing the AMOC toward a catastrophic standstill. Evidence already indicates a 15 percent reduction in the circulation’s strength since the 1950s\, fueling fears of a total collapse. While this collapse wouldn’t instantly trigger the frozen apocalypse depicted in The Day After Tomorrow\, it would starve Europe of heat\, leading to plummeting temperatures and shifted weather patterns across the hemisphere. However\, researchers have not been certain how the Gulf Stream\, one arm of this beast\, might play a role in the AMOC collapse. \nTo find out\, climatologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands used computer modeling and real-world data to study how two ocean current systems interact. The findings indicate that the movement of the Gulf Stream could be a “canary in the coal mine” for the AMOC’s collapse. According to their analysis of satellite data\, the Gulf Stream has already been nudged northwards from the coast near Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina\, since the early 1990s. This is likely to be the result of the AMOC dwindling and losing its grip. Looking ahead\, the models forecast that further weakening of the AMOC will shift the Gulf Stream even further. At one key longitude (71.5°W)\, the current slowly drifts north by about 133 kilometers over several centuries\, followed by a sudden jump northward of about 219 kilometers within just two years in the model. This abrupt change is much larger than the normal year-to-year variation in the current’s position. In a punchline: the study ‘Abrupt Gulf Stream path changes are a precursor to a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation‘ concludes that a noticeable shift in the Gulf Stream’s position could signal that the AMOC is approaching a tipping point. While the scientific community remains divided on whether a total collapse is imminent\, monitoring the movement of the Gulf Stream could be an invaluable way to predict a terminal decline in the AMOC and our planet’s climate. \nLinks:\nThe Gulf stream is moving north – and it could be an early warning sign

SUMMARY:World Seagrass Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:In May 2022\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted A/RES/76/265 proclaiming 1 March as World Seagrass Day. \nThe resolution highlights the urgent need to raise awareness at all levels and to promote and facilitate actions for the conservation of seagrasses in order to contribute to their health and development\, bearing in mind that enhancing ecosystem services and functions is important for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that are found in shallow waters in many parts of the world\, from the tropics to the Arctic circle. They form extensive underwater meadows\, creating complex\, highly productive and biologically rich habitats. Covering only 0.1% of the ocean floor\, these seagrass meadows provide food and shelter to thousands of species of fish\, seahorses\, turtles\, etc. and sustain some of the world’s largest fisheries. They improve water quality by filtering\, cycling and storing nutrients and pollutants\, reducing contamination in seafood. Highly efficient carbon sinks\, they can store up to 18% of the world’s oceanic carbon\, making them a powerful nature-based solutions to tackle climate change impacts. Because they buffer ocean acidification\, they contribute to the resilience of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species\, such as coral reefs. And to the coastal populations\, they act as the first line of defense along coasts by reducing wave energy\, protecting people from the increasing risk of floods and storms. Despite its important contribution to sustainable development and climate change mitigation and adaptation\, this core component of marine biodiversity is in danger and only about a quarter of all meadows fall within marine protected areas. \nSeagrasses have been declining globally since the 1930s\, with the most recent census estimating that 7% of this key marine habitat is being lost worldwide per year. It was recently noted that 21% of seagrass species are categorized as Near Threatened\, Vulnerable and Endangered Species under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The combined pressures of coastal development\, pollution\, including land-based run-off\, climate change\, dredging and unregulated fishing and boating activities are key drivers of the degradation of seagrasses and their associated ecosystems. Despite a general global trend of seagrass loss\, some areas have shown abating declines or substantial recovery of seagrasses. These recoveries can often be attributed to human interventions reducing the effect of human-caused stressors. Seagrasses are critical for life underwater\, but also provide wide-ranging benefits to people on land. Raising awareness about their importance for community well-being\, whether through food security from fish production\, improved quality of water filtered by seagrasses\, protection of coasts from erosion\, storms and floods\, or carbon sequestration and storage will drive efforts around the world to conserve\, better manage and restore these ecosystems. Ultimately\, the protection and restoration of seagrass meadows will help countries achieve multiple economic\, societal and nutritional objectives\, aligning with and supported by policies implemented at the national\, regional or global levels. For example: \n\nThe benefits from conserving and restoring seagrass meadows can also help countries achieve 26 targets and indicators associated with ten Sustainable Development Goals.\nGiven the carbon storage and sequestration capacity of seagrass ecosystems\, including them in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) can help nations achieve their targets under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).\nInclusion of seagrass ecosystems in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)  is also critical for protecting the integrity of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.\nRestoration of seagrasses also provides countries with opportunities to achieve commitments to be made to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration .\n\nInclusion of seagrass management\, conservation and restoration should be a critical component of sustainable blue economy strategies in the future. Projects are already underway in various countries\, and a few have even been selected as World Restoration Flagships initiatives. Chosen as best examples of large-scale and long-term ecosystem restoration\, these projects embody the 10 restoration principles  of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

SUMMARY:Staat van de Waddenzee 2025 - publicatie

SUMMARY:Ecologische onderbouwing Beleidskader Natuur Waddenzee - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Snel handelen in Waddenzee nodig\, voldoende motivatie voor Beleidskader Natuur Waddenzee.

SUMMARY:Dynamic and steric sea-level changes due to a collapsing AMOC in the Community Earth System Model - publicatie / publication
🌊 \nOur ocean is warming\, and we’ve seen the proof \nKlimaat (verandering): AMOC : AMOC verzwakt

SUMMARY:15th Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea
DESCRIPTION:The 15th Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea marks the handover of the presidency from Denmark to the Netherlands\, representing an important step in the shared management of this single World Heritage Site. \nThe event brings together partners\, experts\, and decision-makers from across the Wadden Sea region for three days of programme sessions\, events\, and opportunities for professional exchange. Under the theme “Protection through Recognition\,” the conference emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wadden Sea and the collective responsibility of the three cooperating countries. A key outcome will be the adoption of a new declaration guiding the future direction and ambitions of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken tidal flats system in the world\, where natural processes proceed largely undisturbed. It extends along the coasts of Denmark\, Germany and the Netherlands. For its globally unique geological and ecological values the Wadden Sea is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. Nowhere else in the world is there such a dynamic landscape with a multitude of habitats\, shaped by wind and tides. Global biodiversity is reliant on the Wadden Sea. In the framework of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation\, Denmark\, Germany and the Netherlands take on the responsibility of preserving this irreplaceable ecosystem for the benefit of present and future generations. \nLinks:\n15th Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea \nDenmark\, Germany\, and the Netherlands reaffirm their commitment to protecting the Wadden Sea \nEr komt een gedragscode voor alle bezoekers aan het Wad \nNederland\, Duitsland en Denemarken werken al 48 jaar samen aan de bescherming van de Waddenzee

SUMMARY:#SaveOurOcean #WorldOceansDay / Wereld Oceanen Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Ocean Day (WOD) is an international day that takes place annually on June 8\, the concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. \n“World Oceans Day” was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states.World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean\, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean\, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations\, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global\, this year’s annual program will celebrate the wonders of the ocean as a source of life that supports humanity and all other organisms on Earth. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source\, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen\, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity\, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention\, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Even though all its benefits\, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted\, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed\, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. “Reimagine”\, the theme of World Oceans Day 2026\, invites us to change the way we see and care for the ocean. For too long\, we have viewed it as something distant\, when in fact it is part of our daily lives: the air we breathe\, the food we eat\, and the climate balance that makes our existence possible. Let’s stop being mere beneficiaries of its resources and let’s become true guardians of its future. \nLinks:\nWorld Oceans Day \nWorld Oceans Day 8 June \nWereldoceaandagen \nWorld Oceans Day 2020 – YouTube afspeellijst \nWorld Whale Day / Wereld Walvisdag \nWorld Oceans Day / Wereld Oceanen Dag \n7 ocean mysteries scientists haven’t solved yet \n2022 UN Ocean Conference \n5 Actions You can Take to #SaveOurOcean \nSeascape: the state of our oceans \nZo ziet de industriële visserij eruit

SUMMARY:World Conference on Marine Biodiversity 2026
DESCRIPTION:The 7th edition of the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity will be organized in Bruges between November 17th and 20th 2026. \nThe WCMB 2026 will fly the UN Ocean Decade flag\, as it has been endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Event. The overall theme of the Conference is “The marine biodiversity insights we need\, for the ocean we want”. As the Conference will take place a little over halfway through the UN Ocean Decade\, it will provide an excellent opportunity to take stock of ongoing actions and initiatives\, but also evaluate what still needs to be tackled by the end of the Decade. \nLinks:\nWorld Conference on Marine Biodiversity 2026
