SUMMARY:Predicting the contribution of climate change on North Atlantic underwater sound propagation - publication
DESCRIPTION:Since the industrial revolution\, oceans have become substantially noisier\, according to research by the sea research institute NIOZ\, University of Utrecht\, TNO and IMAU. \nThe noise increase is mainly caused by increased shipping\, resource exploration\, and infrastructure development affecting marine life at multiple levels\, including behavior and physiology. Together with increasing anthropogenic noise\, climate change is altering the thermal structure of the oceans\, which in turn might affect noise propagation. During this century\, we are witnessing an increase in seawater temperature and a decrease in ocean pH. Ocean acidification will decrease sound absorption at low frequencies (<10 kHz)\, enhancing long-range sound propagation. At the same time\, temperature changes can modify the sound speed profile\, leading to the creation or disappearance of sound ducts in which sound can propagate over large distances. The worldwide effect of climate change was explored for the winter and summer seasons using the (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098\, projected) atmospheric and seawater temperature\, salinity\, pH and wind speed as input. Using numerical modelling\, we here explore the impact of climate change on underwater sound propagation. \n \nThe future climate variables were taken from a Community Earth System Model v2 (CESM2) simulations forced under the concentration-driven SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. The sound modeling results show\, for future climate change scenarios\, a global increase of sound speed at different depths (5\, 125\, 300\, and 640 m) except for the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea\, where in the upper 125 m sound speed will decrease by as much as 40 m s−1. This decrease in sound speed results in a new sub-surface duct in the upper 200 m of the water column allowing ship noise to propagate over large distances (>500 km). In the case of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean\, this sub-surface duct will only be present during winter\, leading to similar total mean square pressure level (SPLtot) values in the summer for both (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098). We observed a strong and similar correlation for the two climate change scenarios\, with an increase of the top 200 m SPLtot and a slowdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) leading to an increase of SPLtot at the end of the century by 7 dB. \nLinks:\nMeer CO2 in de lucht zorgt voor meer lawaai onder water

Zo blijkt dat de eeuwenoude wodanseiken in Wolfheze bijzonder populair waren bij de 19e-eeuwse schilders. Kunstwerken zijn nog steeds terug te vinden in het museum. DESCRIPTION:The Republic of Congo\, as the initiator of the alliance between the Three Great Basins\, will host the Founding Summit of the Amazon – Congo – Borneo – Mekong – Southeast Asia\, Summit of the Three Basins\, Biodiversity Ecosystems\, and Tropical Forests (S3B EBFT)\, in October 2023 in Brazzaville. \nThe Summit will bring together Heads of State\, Official Delegations\, Government Representatives\, International Institutions\, Donors\, Financing Organizations\, and Experts\, with the aim of strengthening South-South governance for the three regulatory ecosystems\, Amazon – Congo – Borneo-Mekong – Southeast Asia. These regions alone account for 80% of the world’s tropical forests and two-thirds of terrestrial biodiversity\, playing an essential role in regulating the carbon balance. The purpose of the Summit is to implement\, within the framework of the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration\, the first global coalition to restore 350 million hectares of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The 2021-2030 Decade\, proclaimed by the United Nations for ecosystem restoration\, calls for global mobilization in the face of the environmental and climate emergency that threatens our precious planet. In these critical times\, all must act together and with determination to preserve the 350 million hectares of tropical forests\, which represent a colossal investment of 1 trillion dollars according to United Nations experts’ estimates. DESCRIPTION:The International Seabed Authority (ISA) (French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is a Kingston\, Jamaica-based intergovernmental body of 167 member states and the European Union established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its 1994 Agreement on Implementation. \nThe ISA’s dual mission is to authorize and control development of mineral related operations in the international seabed considered the “common heritage of all mankind” and also protect the ecosystem of the seabed\, ocean floor and subsoil in “The Area” beyond national jurisdiction. The ISA is to safeguard the international deep sea\, the waters below 200 meters\, where photosynthesis is hampered by inadequate light. Governing approximately half of the total area of the world’s oceans\, the ISA is to exercise oversight of activities that might threaten biological diversity and harm the marine environment. The Authority operates as an autonomous international organization with its own Assembly\, Council and Secretariat. \nSince the ISA’s inception in 1994\, the Authority has approved over two dozen ocean floor mining exploration contracts in the Atlantic\, Pacific and Indian Oceans\, with the majority of contracts for exploration in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone between Hawaii and Mexico\, where polymetallic nodules contain copper\, cobalt and other minerals used to power electric batteries. To date\, the Authority has not authorized any commercial mining contracts as it deliberates over regulations amid global calls for a moratorium on deep sea mining. DESCRIPTION:On 5 November 2001\, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the World Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict (A/RES/56/4). \nThough humanity has always counted its war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians\, destroyed cities and livelihoods\, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war. Water wells have been polluted\, crops torched\, forests cut down\, soils poisoned\, and animals killed to gain military advantage. Furthermore\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has found that over the last 60 years\, at least 40 percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources\, whether high-value resources such as timber\, diamonds\, gold and oil\, or scarce resources such as fertile land and water. Conflicts involving natural resources have also been found to be twice as likely to relapse. The United Nations attaches great importance to ensuring that action on the environment is part of conflict prevention\, peacekeeping and peacebuilding strategies\, because there can be no durable peace if the natural resources that sustain livelihoods and ecosystems are destroyed. On 27 May 2016\, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted resolution UNEP/EA.2/Res.15\, which recognized the role of healthy ecosystems and sustainably managed resources in reducing the risk of armed conflict\, and reaffirmed its strong commitment to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals listed in General Assembly resolution 70/1\, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. \nLinks:\nDay for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

Het doel van de wet is om aangetaste natuur in de Europese Unie te herstellen. Ook staan er voorstellen in om de biodiversiteit op landbouwgrond te verbeteren. De wet is hard nodig\, stelt de Europese Commissie\, die becijferde dat 81 procent van de natuurgebieden in slechte staat is. De Europese Commissie wil nu dat de lidstaten in 2030 aan de slag zijn met het herstel van 30 procent van de natuur die in slechte staat verkeert. Natura2000-gebieden krijgen hierbij prioriteit. Maar het is niet genoeg… De natuur verdroogt\, verarmt en verdwijnt door klimaatverandering\, stikstof\, droogte en vervuiling van water. Veel planten en dieren zijn al verdwenen. Het tij kan nog worden gekeerd. Als er nu maatregelen genomen worden\, kan ervoor worden gezorgd dat er niet nog meer planten en dieren verloren gaan. Dan kunnen we overstromingen en droogte beter aan. Dan verbetert ons water\, onze lucht en daarmee onze gezondheid. Voor de natuur\, voor ons\, maar ook voor onze kinderen en kleinkinderen. Daarom moeten we onze Nederlandse natuur beter beschermen. Sluit je aan bij de boswachters. Wens de natuur beterschap en roep de politiek op de natuur beter te beschermen. \nManifest\nNatuurmonumenten heeft direct na de val van het kabinet besloten om de Boswachtersmars te organiseren\, boswachters uit het hele land trekken vrijdag 24 november 2023 in groten getale naar Den Haag\, waar de lijsttrekkers terugblikken op de verkiezingsuitslag. Terwijl binnen vergaderd wordt\, klinkt buiten de Tweede Kamer een dringende oproep van boswachters van Natuurmonumenten. Zij vragen de politiek leiders van alle partijen de natuur beter te beschermen in het volgende coalitieakkoord. Een oproep die door 86% van alle mensen in Nederland gesteund wordt. Het is de eerste keer dat boswachters in ons land massaal de straat op gaan om de stem van de natuur\, die zwaar onder druk staat\, luid en duidelijk te laten horen. DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is of ever-growing concern\, it is a well-known fact that plastic litter is omnipresent in our environment and the eventual sink for plastic waste is the world oceans. \nEven in the Arctic region plastic pollution is widespread. There is now a great urgency for actions to stem the plastic tide. Recently\, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted a broad negotiating mandate for a new legally binding international agreement to end plastic pollution. The new agreement is expected to include provisions to promote national and international cooperative measures to reduce plastic pollution in the marine environment. Scientific research and studies into plastic pollution have been growing quite fast over the last couple of decades. It is essential that we take full advantage of the best available knowledge when we look for solutions to tackle this global problem. In March 2021\, Iceland and the Nordic Council of Ministers hosted a successful First symposium on Plastics in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic Region with participants calling for a follow up in the near future. For these reasons\, the Government of Iceland\, with the support of the Nordic Council of Ministers\, will host a Second International Symposium on Plastics in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic Region. Conserving and cultivating the olive tree is a growing imperative as the world combats and adapts to climate change. The protection of cultural and natural heritage\, including landscapes\, is at the heart of UNESCO’s mission and marking World Olive Tree Day reinforces environmental sustainability efforts. The olive tree\, specifically the olive branch\, holds an important place in the minds of men and women.
