Er zijn wel duizenden verschillende soorten kevertjes\, spinachtigen\, slakken enzovoort. En dat alleen al in Nederland. Door anders te maaien is de oude dijk nu een prachtplek voor graslandvlinders. De oude achterliggende polder is een walhalla voor brakke flora én talloze steltlopers en kustvogels. Tot voor kort broedden op de eilandjes achter de duinen nog duizenden grote sterns. DESCRIPTION:World Gorilla Day creates the opportunity for people all over the world to come together in celebrating the gorilla\, and more importantly\, taking action to protect gorillas in the wild. \n2017 was the inaugural year for World Gorilla Day and it also marked the fiftieth anniversary of Karisoke Research Center\, operated by The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). Established by Dian Fossey\, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation\, protection\, and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. There are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival\, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas. World Gorilla Day strives to be a rallying point for bolstering appreciation and action for these great apes. \nThe global mobile phone recycling challenge\, “Gorillas on the Line…Answer the Call” came to a close on April 30\, 2019. Twenty-two zoo and aquarium partners collectively hosted the challenge\, recruiting schools and organizations within their local region to join the campaign. In total\, the message reached more than 260\,000 people\, 56 groups across the country participated and collected 12\,486 old mobile phones\, and raised $6\,055 to save gorillas in the wild! The 2019 challenge far surpassed the goals of engaging 10\,000 people in collecting 10\,000 cell phones. \nThis community engagement initiative was created by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Gorilla Species Survival Plan education advisory team to raise awareness about cell phone recycling and its benefits to gorilla conservation. The challenge\, which kicked off in February took place over the span of three months and involved students\, teachers\, parents\, zoo staff\, and many others in collecting old handheld electronics to be recycled in the name of gorilla conservation. On World Gorilla Day 2019\, everyone was invited to answer the call for gorillas and participate in the 2020 mobile phone recycling challenge. \nZoos\, conservation stakeholders\, and other interested organizations are invited to join the celebration on September 24 and help give a voice to one of our closest relatives.\n\nLinks:\nWorld Gorilla Day

In Breeveen is een bos volledig omvergeblazen door een valwind. Dit zorgt voor een bijzonder landschap met heel veel verschillende soorten mieren. Die mieren trekken weer spechten aan. Het team loopt mee met een herder en zijn schaapskudde\, die moeten voorkomen dat er nieuw bos ontstaat. Menno ziet boomklevers en boompiepers. Hij hoopt de das te zien\, die zich diep in het bos verschuilt. Bijna elke stukje grond in Nederland heeft een eigenaar. Maar op de Utrechtse Heuvelrug is er nu een initiatief om een natuurgebied terug te geven aan zichzelf. Het betreft ‘Het bos dat van zichzelf is‘ bij het Landgoed Zonheuvel in Doorn. DESCRIPTION:Dagblad Trouw en Pakhuis de Zwijger organiseren samen de vijftiende editie van de Trouw Duurzame 100\, een moment om terug te blikken en vooruit te kijken met de meest duurzame pioniers van het land. \nIn het programma wordt de top 25 bekendgemaakt\, gesproken met inspirerende sprekers en is er ruimte voor muziek en poëzie. Bij De Trouw Duurzame 100 staat de duurzame burgerbeweging centraal. Gewone mensen dus\, die zich inspannen om Nederland groener\, gezonder en biodiverser te maken. Vaak samen\, soms individueel. Door insecten te helpen\, een voedselbos te planten\, afval op te ruimen\, te protesteren voor het klimaat\, te recyclen of spullen te delen. En ga zo maar even door. De groene beweging ‘van onderop’ is springlevend! Tijdens deze avond krijgt deze groene burgerbeweging de aandacht die het verdient en is er vooral ruimte voor de verhalen achter alle mooie initiatieven die onderdeel zijn van de Trouw Duurzame 100. Daarnaast wordt gesproken met experts\, 15 jaar teruggeblikt en vooruit gekeken. DESCRIPTION:Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament taking place every October\, it pits bears in Katmai National Park\, Alaska against each other in a week-long bracket style competition\, evaluating a bear’s “success in preparation for winter hibernation”. \nThe competition is intended to raise awareness and help generate interest in conservation. Participants vote to decide who they deem is the “fattest” bear. The event is organized by the National Park Service and Explore.org\, and anyone can participate by voting online for their preferred bear. In order to qualify for Fat Bear Week\, brown bears of the Katmai National Park must have been spotted catching sockeye salmon at the Brooks River. The subjective contest is a single-elimination tournament. Each day\, two bears are presented in a match-up\, identified by numbers. The bear with the most votes advances to the next round. In order to evaluate which bears have gained the most weight in preparation for hibernation\, the public is able to view before and after photos of specific bears\, watch them on livestream feeds\, and read their biographies. Tussen de uitgestrekte landbouwgronden op de Dollardpolders liggen verschillende natuurgebieden. In die natte graslanden springen greppelsprinkhanen en zit de bijzondere wespspin te wachten op haar prooi. SUMMARY:Predicting the contribution of climate change on North Atlantic underwater sound propagation - publication
DESCRIPTION:Since the industrial revolution\, oceans have become substantially noisier\, according to research by the sea research institute NIOZ\, University of Utrecht\, TNO and IMAU. \nThe noise increase is mainly caused by increased shipping\, resource exploration\, and infrastructure development affecting marine life at multiple levels\, including behavior and physiology. Together with increasing anthropogenic noise\, climate change is altering the thermal structure of the oceans\, which in turn might affect noise propagation. During this century\, we are witnessing an increase in seawater temperature and a decrease in ocean pH. Ocean acidification will decrease sound absorption at low frequencies (<10 kHz)\, enhancing long-range sound propagation. At the same time\, temperature changes can modify the sound speed profile\, leading to the creation or disappearance of sound ducts in which sound can propagate over large distances. The worldwide effect of climate change was explored for the winter and summer seasons using the (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098\, projected) atmospheric and seawater temperature\, salinity\, pH and wind speed as input. Using numerical modelling\, we here explore the impact of climate change on underwater sound propagation. \n \nThe future climate variables were taken from a Community Earth System Model v2 (CESM2) simulations forced under the concentration-driven SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. The sound modeling results show\, for future climate change scenarios\, a global increase of sound speed at different depths (5\, 125\, 300\, and 640 m) except for the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea\, where in the upper 125 m sound speed will decrease by as much as 40 m s−1. This decrease in sound speed results in a new sub-surface duct in the upper 200 m of the water column allowing ship noise to propagate over large distances (>500 km). In the case of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean\, this sub-surface duct will only be present during winter\, leading to similar total mean square pressure level (SPLtot) values in the summer for both (2018 to 2022) and (2094 to 2098). We observed a strong and similar correlation for the two climate change scenarios\, with an increase of the top 200 m SPLtot and a slowdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) leading to an increase of SPLtot at the end of the century by 7 dB. \nLinks:\nMeer CO2 in de lucht zorgt voor meer lawaai onder water

Zo blijkt dat de eeuwenoude wodanseiken in Wolfheze bijzonder populair waren bij de 19e-eeuwse schilders. Kunstwerken zijn nog steeds terug te vinden in het museum. These regions alone account for 80% of the world’s tropical forests and two-thirds of terrestrial biodiversity\, playing an essential role in regulating the carbon balance. The purpose of the Summit is to implement\, within the framework of the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration\, the first global coalition to restore 350 million hectares of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The 2021-2030 Decade\, proclaimed by the United Nations for ecosystem restoration\, calls for global mobilization in the face of the environmental and climate emergency that threatens our precious planet. In these critical times\, all must act together and with determination to preserve the 350 million hectares of tropical forests\, which represent a colossal investment of 1 trillion dollars according to United Nations experts’ estimates. DESCRIPTION:The International Seabed Authority (ISA) (French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is a Kingston\, Jamaica-based intergovernmental body of 167 member states and the European Union established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its 1994 Agreement on Implementation. \nThe ISA’s dual mission is to authorize and control development of mineral related operations in the international seabed considered the “common heritage of all mankind” and also protect the ecosystem of the seabed\, ocean floor and subsoil in “The Area” beyond national jurisdiction. The ISA is to safeguard the international deep sea\, the waters below 200 meters\, where photosynthesis is hampered by inadequate light. Governing approximately half of the total area of the world’s oceans\, the ISA is to exercise oversight of activities that might threaten biological diversity and harm the marine environment. The Authority operates as an autonomous international organization with its own Assembly\, Council and Secretariat. \nSince the ISA’s inception in 1994\, the Authority has approved over two dozen ocean floor mining exploration contracts in the Atlantic\, Pacific and Indian Oceans\, with the majority of contracts for exploration in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone between Hawaii and Mexico\, where polymetallic nodules contain copper\, cobalt and other minerals used to power electric batteries. To date\, the Authority has not authorized any commercial mining contracts as it deliberates over regulations amid global calls for a moratorium on deep sea mining.
