SUMMARY:#WorldRainforestDay / Wereld Regenwoud dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative effort to raise awareness and encourage action to save one of Earth’s most precious resources\, the rainforests. \nRainforests are vital for the survival of life on Earth. We depend on the Amazon rainforest alone for 20% of the oxygen we breathe and the freshwater we drink. They absorb our carbon dioxide\, stabilize climate patterns\, and are home to half the world’s plant and animal species. Yet every minute\, we lose 40 football fields of rainforests\, which threatens our biodiversity and imperils our planet’s health. Deforestation causes 15% of global carbon dioxide emissions that accelerate climate change—more than from all cars in the U.S. and China combined. Natural climate solutions like protecting and restoring forests\, however\, could reverse global emissions by a third. \nLinks:\nWorld Rainforest Day \nWorld Rainforest Day newsletter

SUMMARY:#ForestDay #IntlForestDay Day of Forests / Dag van het Bos 2026
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/67/200 on 21 December 2012\, which declared that 21 March of each year is to be observed as the Day of Forests. \nThe Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests\, countries are encouraged to undertake local\, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees\, such as tree planting campaigns.  The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests. \n2026 Theme is ‘Celebrating forests and economies’. Forests and economies is the theme of the 2026 International Day of Forests\, celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity. These roles go well beyond income and jobs from forest production and the trade of renewable raw materials and foods: forests also sustain family and community agriculture\, enhance agricultural productivity\, and safeguard healthy watersheds. With many countries seeking to move toward a sustainable bioeconomy\, forest products offer nature-based solutions as replacements for carbon-intensive materials while generating new economic opportunities. Forests are indispensable for healthy economies – today and for future generations. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Forests \nInternational Day of Forests 21 March

SUMMARY:Amazon River & Forest Day / Rise for the Amazon Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Every year on 5 September\, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) marks Amazon Day\, and wants to use this moment to remind you of the magnificence of the Amazon rainforest. \nThe Amazon contains 10 per cent of our entire planet’s wildlife. But there are many other reasons why the rainforest is so important\, including: \n\n    Roughly 100 billion tonnes of carbon are locked up in its plants and trees\, making it vitally important in our global efforts to tackle climate change.\n    The Amazon is home to more than 30 million people living across a vast region\, many of whom rely on the forest for their livelihoods.\n    The Amazon River flows for more than 6\,600 km\, and contains the largest number of freshwater fish species in the world.\n\nThe Amazon is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Its forests breathe life into the world\, its rivers flow like veins carrying water and energy\, and its people and wildlife embody a resilience that inspires us all. But the Amazon is at a crossroads. Rising pressures from deforestation\, fires\, and climate change are threatening to push this vital ecosystem toward an irreversible tipping point. At the same time\, communities across the region are leading powerful efforts to protect their home. What they need is for all of us to rise with them. That’s why on September 5\, Rise for the Amazon Day is celebrated as a day for people everywhere to come together in solidarity with the Amazon. Rise for the Amazon Day is about more than giving. It’s about standing shoulder to shoulder with Indigenous peoples protecting their lands\, with scientists tracking the forest’s health\, with farmers choosing sustainable paths\, and with wildlife whose future depends on the choices we make today. It’s a reminder that the Amazon belongs to all of us\, and protecting it is one of the most powerful gifts we can offer future generations. \nLinks:\nRise for the Amazon Day. SUMMARY:Brazilië: stop de ‘verwoestingswet’ - petitie
\nLinks:\nBrazilië: stop de ‘verwoestingswet’ \nTijd voor Brazilië om het voortouw te nemen in bosbehoud (Project Syndicate) \nBrazil activists decry green rollbacks as senate passes ‘devastation bill’ (The Guardian) \nBrazil’s Senate approves environmental devastation – a threat to biodiversity (World Animal Protection) \nThe Devastation Bill: proposal restricts the need for licensing process for non-titled or non-ratified areas (Brasil de fato)

SUMMARY:Fires Drove Record-breaking Tropical Forest Loss in 2024 - publication
DESCRIPTION:The Forest Pulse draws on the most recent data and analysis to reveal the latest trends in global forest loss and deforestation. \nThe Forest Pulse is updated annually using annual tree cover loss data\, updates are released each year and cover the previous year’s trends. The tropics lost a record-shattering 6.7 million hectares of primary rainforest in 2024\, an area nearly the size of Panama. Driven largely by massive fires\, that’s more than any other year in at least the last two decades. According to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD lab and available on WRI’s Global Forest Watch platform\, tropical primary forest disappeared at a rate of 18 football (soccer) fields per minute in 2024 — nearly double that of 2023. These are some of the most important forest ecosystems\, critical for livelihoods\, carbon storage\, water provision\, biodiversity and more. Their loss in 2024 alone caused 3.1 gigatonnes (Gt) of greenhouse gas emissions\, equivalent to slightly more than the annual CO2 emissions from India’s fossil fuel use. \nLinks:\nFires Drove Record-breaking Tropical Forest Loss in 2024 \nVorig jaar ging tropisch regenwoud ter grootte van Ierland verloren \nRELEASE: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024\, Fueled by Massive Fires \nMeer tropisch oerbos verloren gegaan in 2024 dan ooit eerder gemeten\, branden grootste oorzaak

SUMMARY:2024 Forest Declaration Assessment: Forests under fire - publication
DESCRIPTION:Forests are indispensable: they are central for addressing the interlinked climate\, biodiversity\, and nature crises\, yet they continue to be destroyed at alarming rates – threatening planetary health and the well-being of future generations. \nInternational forest pledges have committed their signatories to halting and reversing global deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. But the world is not on track to meet those 2030 forest goals. On the contrary\, the annual assessment report reveals a sobering trajectory of ongoing or increasing global deforestation and degradation in 2023. \nLinks:\n2024 Forest Declaration Assessment: Forests under fire

SUMMARY:Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem / Dag voor het Behoud van het Mangrovebos 2024
DESCRIPTION:Mangroves are rare\, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. \nThese extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing\, food security\, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges\, tsunamis\, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks\, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses\, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two since the 1980’s. UNESCO is engaged deeply in supporting the conservation of mangroves\, while advancing the sustainable development of their local communities. The inclusion of mangroves in Biosphere Reserves\, World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks contributes to improving the knowledge\, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems throughout the world. The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem\, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015 and celebrated each year on 26 July\, aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique\, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management\, conservation and uses. \nLinks:\nDay for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem \nMessage from Ms Audrey Azoulay\, Director-General of UNESCO\, on the occasion of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem\, 26 July 2024

SUMMARY:#WorldRainforestDay / Wereld Regenwoud dag 2024

SUMMARY:Stop the anti-forest law! - petition
DESCRIPTION:Peru’s lawmakers have pushed through Law No. 31973 (known as the ‘anti-forest law’) that legalizes the destruction of the Amazon and threatens the survival of Indigenous peoples. \nThis ‘anti-forest’ law gives agribusiness land-grabbers legal ownership of precious rainforest lands\, even if they are taken from Indigenous peoples ancestral territory – and Peruvians have taken to the streets by the thousands to demand a repeal. Now\, forest defenders are taking the fight all the way to Peru’s highest court\, and they need a global spotlight on the case to make sure it isn’t derailed by powerful agribusiness lobbies desperate to keep the law in place by any means. Add your name now to stand with Peruvian forest defenders and support the repeal of the anti-forest law. \nLinks:\nStop the anti-forest law! \nPeru’s congress just passed a law giving agribusiness a LICENCE TO KILL the Amazon

SUMMARY:Amazon River & Forest Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Every year on 5 September\, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) marks Amazon Day\, and wants to use this moment to remind you of the magnificence of the Amazon rainforest. \nThe Amazon contains 10 per cent of our entire planet’s wildlife. But there are many other reasons why the rainforest is so important\, including: \n\n    Roughly 100 billion tonnes of carbon are locked up in its plants and trees\, making it vitally important in our global efforts to tackle climate change.\n    The Amazon is home to more than 30 million people living across a vast region\, many of whom rely on the forest for their livelihoods.\n    The Amazon River flows for more than 6\,600 km\, and contains the largest number of freshwater fish species in the world.\n\nLinks:\nSeptember 5: Amazon Day \nThe Amazon is burning \nAmazon forest fires / WWF actie Amazone branden
