SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. The satellite will measure 10 x 12 x 20m\, weigh around 1.2 tonnes and it is set to orbit the Earth at an altitude of 666 km. All devices for assembly of the satellite structure\, including vertical transport equipment\, assembly and disassembly of satellite panels\, assembly and disassembly of the Synthetic Aperture Radar are done by the Spanish company SENER. \nLinks:\nBiomass – ESA \n#ForestDay #IntlForestDay Day of Forests / Dag van het Bos 2025 (TV FAO webcast)

DESCRIPTION:The Forest Pulse draws on the most recent data and analysis to reveal the latest trends in global forest loss and deforestation. \nThe Forest Pulse is updated annually using annual tree cover loss data\, updates are released each year and cover the previous year’s trends. The tropics lost a record-shattering 6.7 million hectares of primary rainforest in 2024\, an area nearly the size of Panama. Driven largely by massive fires\, that’s more than any other year in at least the last two decades. According to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD lab and available on WRI’s Global Forest Watch platform\, tropical primary forest disappeared at a rate of 18 football (soccer) fields per minute in 2024 — nearly double that of 2023. These are some of the most important forest ecosystems\, critical for livelihoods\, carbon storage\, water provision\, biodiversity and more. DESCRIPTION:Het Braziliaanse Congres heeft op 21 mei 2025 het meest milieuonvriendelijke en verwoestende wetsvoorstel Bill 2159/2021 uit hun geschiedenis goedgekeurd. \n3.000 stukken land\, waaronder ruim een derde van alle Inheemse grondgebieden\, raken de wettelijke bescherming kwijt die al tientallen grootschalige exploitatie tegenhoudt. De jacht op het Amazonewoud is geopend\, en de minister van Milieu heeft gezegd dat dit een ‘doodslag’ is voor de klimaatambities van Brazilië.
