SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. The satellite will measure 10 x 12 x 20m\, weigh around 1.2 tonnes and it is set to orbit the Earth at an altitude of 666 km. All devices for assembly of the satellite structure\, including vertical transport equipment\, assembly and disassembly of satellite panels\, assembly and disassembly of the Synthetic Aperture Radar are done by the Spanish company SENER. \nLinks:\nBiomass – ESA \n#ForestDay #IntlForestDay Day of Forests / Dag van het Bos 2025 (TV FAO webcast)

DESCRIPTION:Every year on 5 September\, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) marks Amazon Day\, and wants to use this moment to remind you of the magnificence of the Amazon rainforest. \nThe Amazon contains 10 per cent of our entire planet’s wildlife. But there are many other reasons why the rainforest is so important\, including: \n\n    Roughly 100 billion tonnes of carbon are locked up in its plants and trees\, making it vitally important in our global efforts to tackle climate change.\n    The Amazon is home to more than 30 million people living across a vast region\, many of whom rely on the forest for their livelihoods.\n    The Amazon River flows for more than 6\,600 km\, and contains the largest number of freshwater fish species in the world.\n\nThe Amazon is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Its forests breathe life into the world\, its rivers flow like veins carrying water and energy\, and its people and wildlife embody a resilience that inspires us all. But the Amazon is at a crossroads. Rising pressures from deforestation\, fires\, and climate change are threatening to push this vital ecosystem toward an irreversible tipping point. At the same time\, communities across the region are leading powerful efforts to protect their home. What they need is for all of us to rise with them. That’s why on September 5\, Rise for the Amazon Day is celebrated as a day for people everywhere to come together in solidarity with the Amazon. Rise for the Amazon Day is about more than giving.
