SUMMARY:Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen
DESCRIPTION:Iedere Tuin telt in het nieuwe\, allergrootste natuurpark van Nederland: het ‘Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen’. \nIn Nederland zijn 4\,5 miljoen tuinen waarvan de gezamenlijke oppervlakte meer dan tien keer zo groot is als Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe. Samen vormen onze tuinen het grootste natuurgebied van Nederland: Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen! En dat maakt iedere tuinbezitter tot natuurbeheerder. Hoe staat het met de soortenrijkdom in onze eigen achtertuinen? Samen met het publiek wordt op onderzoek uit gegaan in dit gloednieuwe Nationaal Park: Lukt het om 5.000 verschillende soorten wilde planten en dieren te tellen in de maand juli? In samenwerking met het Kadaster en de gratis app ObsIdentify van Waarneming.nl wordt deze uitdaging aangegaan met een BioBlitz\, een officiële telling. Aanleiding voor het project is de documentaire My Garden of a Thousand Bees van Martin Dohrn\, een wildlife filmmaker uit Bristol. Dohrn besloot tijdens de lockdown in coronatijd zijn apparatuur te gebruiken om het leven van de bijen in zijn achtertuin vast te leggen. Nu had hij eindelijk de tijd om in te zoomen op het insectenleven in eigen tuin. Hij nadert de bijen zo dichtbij en grondig dat hij meer dan dan zestig soorten kan vastleggen en zelfs individuen kan onderscheiden. Hij documenteert hun leven op een niveau zoals nog niet eerder te zien was. Het resultaat\, de bijzondere documentaire ‘My garden of a Thousand Bees’ werd op het wetenschapsfilmfestival InScience 2023 onderscheiden met de NTR Audience Award. \nLinks:\nIedere Tuin telt \nTrailer: Iedere tuin telt!

DESCRIPTION:The late-Quaternary megafauna extinctions: Patterns\, causes\, ecological consequences and implications for ecosystem management in the Anthropocene. \nAcross the last ~50\,000 years (the late Quaternary) terrestrial vertebrate faunas have experienced severe losses of large species (megafauna)\, with most extinctions occurring in the Late Pleistocene and Early to Middle Holocene. Debate on the causes has been ongoing for over 200 years\, intensifying from the 1960s onward. In the article “The late-Quaternary megafauna extinctions: Patterns\, causes\, ecological consequences and implications for ecosystem management in the Anthropocene“\, the scientist outline criteria that any causal hypothesis needs to account for. Importantly\, this extinction event is unique relative to other Cenozoic (the last 66 million years) extinctions in its strong size bias. For example\, only 11 out of 57 species of megaherbivores (body mass ≥1\,000 kg) survived to the present. In addition to mammalian megafauna\, certain other groups also experienced substantial extinctions\, mainly large non-mammalian vertebrates and smaller but megafauna-associated taxa. Further\, extinction severity and dates varied among continents\, but severely affected all biomes\, from the Arctic to the tropics. \nThe writers of the article synthesise the evidence for and against climatic or modern human (Homo sapiens) causation\, the only existing tenable hypotheses. Their review shows that there is little support for any major influence of climate\, neither in global extinction patterns nor in fine-scale spatiotemporal and mechanistic evidence. Conversely\, there is strong and increasing support for human pressures as the key driver of these extinctions\, with emerging evidence for an initial onset linked to pre-sapiens hominins prior to the Late Pleistocene. Subsequently\, they synthesize the evidence for ecosystem consequences of megafauna extinctions and discuss the implications for conservation and restoration. A broad range of evidence indicates that the megafauna extinctions have elicited profound changes to ecosystem structure and functioning. The late-Quaternary megafauna extinctions thereby represent an early\, large-scale human-driven environmental transformation\, constituting a progenitor of the Anthropocene\, where humans are now a major player in planetary functioning. SUMMARY:Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem / Dag voor het Behoud van het Mangrovebos 2024
DESCRIPTION:Mangroves are rare\, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. \nThese extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing\, food security\, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges\, tsunamis\, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks\, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses\, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two since the 1980’s. UNESCO is engaged deeply in supporting the conservation of mangroves\, while advancing the sustainable development of their local communities. The inclusion of mangroves in Biosphere Reserves\, World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks contributes to improving the knowledge\, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems throughout the world.
