SUMMARY:#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar 2021-... Myanmar coup d'état / 2021-... Myanmar protests
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Myanmar coup d’état began on the morning of 1 February 2021\, when democratically elected members of the country’s ruling party\, the National League for Democracy (NLD)\, were deposed by the Tatmadaw—Myanmar’s military—which then vested power in a stratocracy. \nThe Tatmadaw proclaimed a year-long state of emergency and declared power had been transferred to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing. It declared the results of the November 2020 general election invalid and stated its intent to hold a new election at the end of the state of emergency even though most of Myanmar’s people are satisfied with the results of the election. The coup d’état occurred the day before the Parliament of Myanmar was due to swear in the members elected at the 2020 election\, thereby preventing this from occurring. President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained\, along with ministers\, their deputies and members of Parliament. \nProtests in Myanmar\, known locally as the Spring Revolution\, began in early 2021 in opposition to the coup. As of 16 April 2021\, at least 728 protesters and bystanders\, of which at least 44 were children\, have been killed by military or police forces and at least 3\,141 people detained. Protesters have employed peaceful and nonviolent forms of protest\, which include acts of civil disobedience\, labour strikes\, a military boycott campaign\, a pot-banging movement\, a red ribbon campaign\, public protests\, and formal recognition of the election results by elected representatives. The colour red\, which is associated with the National League for Democracy (NLD)\, has been donned by many protesters. \n“Kabar Ma Kyay Bu“\, a song that was first popularised as the anthem of the 8888 Uprising\, has been revitalised by the civil disobedience movement as a protest song. The three-finger salute has been widely adopted by protesters as a protest symbol. In response to the growing protest movement\, the military leaders of the coup enacted a number of countermeasures. These include internet and social media blackouts\, a media blackout\, pursuit of arrests and criminal sentences against protesters\, the spread of disinformation\, political overtures to competing political parties to participate in the self-appointed State Administration Council (to replace the elected government body)\, deployment of pro-military protesters and instigators\, and the violent use of force to suppress protests. \nLinks:\nAgenda – #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar 2021 Myanmar coup d’état / 2021–2022 Myanmar protests \n#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar 2021 Myanmar coup d’état / 2021–2022 Myanmar protests \nMyanmar coup latest: Protest expected to be largest since coup \nMyanmar coup: Huge crowds mourn woman killed in protests \nStop murdering and jailing protestors\, UN human rights chief tells Myanmar military \nRohingya refugee crisis \nDays of Killings and Defiance in Myanmar\, With Neither Side Relenting \nMore than 100 killed as Myanmar junta unleashes worst day of terror / Zeker 114 doden door protesten in Myanmar \nAmbassade Myanmar in VK weert ambassadeur omdat hij legercoup niet steunt \nOn 1 February\, Myanmar’s military launched a coup that halted abruptly the country’s democratic transition \nAung San Suu Kyi faces fresh corruption charges in Myanmar as trial nears \nSAC soldiers pretended as Covid-19 patients to lure the CDM doctors and arrested them. SUMMARY:‘On this journey\, no one cares if you live or die’ Abuse\, protection\, and justice along routes between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean coast - publication
DESCRIPTION:Abuse\, protection\, and justice along routes between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean coast. \nAt the end of May 2020\, 30 people were murdered in the town of Mizdah\, south of Tripoli\, allegedly by traffickers. These were among the latest in a long series of deaths along the route from West Africa or the East and Horn of Africa to Libya. At least 68 refugees or migrants are known to have died along the route this year alone. As refugees and migrants travel along the Central Mediterranean route to Libya\, many continue to be subjected to horrific violence at multiple points along the way\, as the testimonies in this report show\, even before any attempt to cross the sea to Europe. It remains one of the deadliest land crossings in the world. This report draws on data collected by the Mixed Migration Centre’s 4Mi monitors along the route to map the places where refugees interviewed in 2018 and 2019 most frequently reported deaths\, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)\, physical violence\, and kidnappings occurred. \nAt the end of 2017\, UNHCR shared recommendations related to trafficking with several key States and agencies to encourage further actions to protect refugees and migrants from abuses along the Central Mediterranean route. In follow up to those recommendations\, UNHCR\, together with the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC)\, seeks to draw further attention to the human rights abuses that take place along multiple sections of the Central Mediterranean land route. In doing so\, and through the recommendations included in the report “‘On this journey\, no one cares if you live or die’ Abuse\, protection\, and justice along routes between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean coast“\, UNHCR and MMC call for measures to hold perpetrators of crimes and human rights violations along the route accountable; for more measures to assist and protect victims; and for greater cooperation between States to increase protection and access to solutions\, and enhance access to justice. \nLinks:\n‘On this journey\, no one cares if you live or die’ Abuse\, protection\, and justice along routes between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean coast
