SUMMARY:YouTube Quietly Erased More Than 700 Videos Documenting Israeli Human Rights Violations - publication
DESCRIPTION:The tech giant YouTube deleted the accounts of three prominent Palestinian human rights groups — a capitulation to Trump sanctions. \nYouTube surreptitiously deleted all these videos in early October by wiping the accounts that posted them from its website\, along with their channels’ archives. The accounts belonged to three prominent Palestinian human rights groups: Al-Haq\, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights\, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. The three human rights groups’ account terminations cumulatively amount to the erasure of more than 700 videos\, according to an Intercept tally. The deleted videos range in scope from investigations\, such as an analysis of the Israeli killing of American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh\, to testimonies of Palestinians tortured by Israeli forces and documentaries like “The Beach\,” about children playing on a beach who were killed by an Israeli strike. Some videos are still available through copies saved on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or on alternate platforms\, such as Facebook and Vimeo. The wiping only affected the group’s official channels; videos which were produced by the nonprofits but hosted on alternate YouTube channels remain active. No cumulative index of videos deleted by YouTube is available\, however\, and many appear to not be available elsewhere online. \nLinks:\nYouTube Quietly Erased More Than 700 Videos Documenting Israeli Human Rights Violations \nYouTube verwijdert 700 video’s met documentatie van Israëlische misdaden

SUMMARY:Politieke Persvrijheidmeter 2025 - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Politieke Persvrijheidmeter laat zien: Persvrijheid in Nederland niet vanzelfsprekend. \nLinks:\nPolitieke Persvrijheidmeter 2025

SUMMARY:NOS\, Wees Eerlijk! - Bezetting Mediapark
DESCRIPTION:NOS\, Wees Eerlijk!

SUMMARY:At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army\, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed - RSF and Avaaz launch international media operation
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of media outlets\, brought together by the campaigning platform Avaaz and Reporters Without Borders (RSF)\, are waging a campaign calling for the protection of Palestinian journalists in Gaza\, the emergency evacuation of reporters seeking to leave the Strip\, an end to impunity for Israeli crimes against Gaza’s reporters and that foreign press be granted independent access to the territory. \nAccording to RSF data\, 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip in less than 23 months. On the night of 10 August alone\, the Israeli army killed six journalists in a targeted strike against Al-Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif. Less than a week ago\, on Monday\, 25 August\, the Israeli army killed five journalists in two consecutive strikes. Today\, hundreds of media outlets in over 50 countries are mobilising in solidarity with Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip\, alongside RSF and Avaaz. This international operation consists of an entire or partial blackout of the front pages of print media\, banners on online news sites\, and audio or video messages broadcast by radio and television stations. In line with the call launched by RSF and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in June\, the media outlets involved in this campaign are making three demands: \n\nthe protection of Palestinian journalists and an end to the impunity for crimes perpetrated by the Israeli army against them in the Gaza Strip.\nthe foreign press be granted independent access to the Gaza Strip.\nthat governments across the world host Palestinian journalists seeking evacuation from Gaza.\n\nWith the opening of the 80th United Nations General Assembly\, they demand strong action from the international community and call on the United Nations Security Council to stop the Israeli army’s crimes against Palestinian journalists.\nLinks:\nAt the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army\, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed \nMeerdere media op zwart om dood journalisten in Gaza \nWaarschuwingsstelsel sirene en NL-alert test \nWijWerkenHierNietAanMee \nRecord 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths – publication

DESCRIPTION:The report\, “Disrupted\, Throttled\, and Blocked: State Censorship\, Control\, and Increasing Isolation of Internet Users in Russia”\, documents the impact of the government’s increasing technological capacities and control over the country’s internet infrastructure. \nHuman Rights Watch (HRW) found that this allows the authorities to carry out more widespread and nontransparent blocking and throttling of unwanted websites and censorship circumvention tools\, as well as internet disruptions and shutdowns under the pretext of ensuring public safety and national security. \nLinks:\nRussia: Internet Blocking\, Disruptions and Increasing Isolation

SUMMARY:#RSFIndex2025 World Press Freedom Index 2025 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom\, economic pressure is also a major\, more insidious problem. \nThe economic indicator on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index now stands at an unprecedented\, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result\, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. At a time when press freedom is experiencing a worrying decline in many parts of the world\, a major — yet often underestimated — factor is seriously weakening the media: economic pressure. Much of this is due to ownership concentration\, pressure from advertisers and financial backers\, and public aid that is restricted\, absent or allocated in an opaque manner. The data measured by the RSF Index’s economic indicator clearly shows that today’s news media are caught between preserving their editorial independence and ensuring their economic survival. \nLinks:\nRSF World Press Freedom Index 2025 \nDag van de Persvrijheid / World Press Freedom Day 2025

SUMMARY:Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025: Deepening Crisis In Media Freedom Across the EU Puts Democracy At Risk -publication
DESCRIPTION:Media freedom is crumbling across the EU\, according to Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025\, a collaboration of more than 40 human rights organisations from across the EU. \nIn 2024\, many governments influenced the media by allocating state funding to government-friendly outlets and using public service media for their communication tools; journalists faced widespread threats and violence\, with female journalists targeted the most\, and were denied requests for information by public officials; and weak media ownership transparency resulted in concentrated media ownership\, Liberties Media Freedom Report 2025 (Report) finds. This Report is the fourth annual report on media freedom in the European Union (EU) produced by the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties). It is based on data and input from 43 member and partner organisations from 21 EU Member States. As in previous editions\, this Report covers four primary areas: media freedom and pluralism\, safety and protection of journalists\, freedom of expression and access to information\, and European legislation related to media freedom and pluralism. \nLinks:\nLiberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025: Deepening Crisis In Media Freedom Across the EU Puts Democracy At Risk

SUMMARY:2024 is deadliest year for journalists in CPJ history; almost 70% killed by Israel - publication
DESCRIPTION:More journalists were killed in 2024 than in any other year since the Committee to Protect Journalists began collecting data more than three decades ago\, at least 124 journalists and media workers were killed last year\, nearly two-thirds of them Palestinians killed by Israel. \nThe number of conflicts globally – whether political\, criminal\, or military in nature – has doubled in the past five years\, and this is reflected in the high number of deaths of journalists in nations such as Sudan\, Pakistan\, and Myanmar. But the toll of conflict on the press is most glaring in the unprecedented number of journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza war\, 85 in 2024\, and 78 in 2023. All of the 2024 killings point to the increased dangers facing reporters and media workers – and the threat that poses to the flow of information worldwide. The global total of 124 deaths exceeds the record high of 113 killed in 2007\, when the Iraq war accounted for almost half of journalist casualties. Outside of Gaza (82) and Lebanon (3)\, CPJ documented the killing of 39 other journalists and media workers in 16 nations\, with the deadliest being Sudan (6)\, Pakistan (6)\, Mexico (5)\, Syria (4)\, Myanmar (3)\, Iraq (3)\, and Haiti (2) during 2024. CPJ records a journalist’s killing in its database if it has reasonable grounds to believe they may have been killed in relation to their work: either killed accidentally in a conflict zone or on a dangerous assignment\, or killed deliberately because of their journalism. \nLinks:\n2024 is deadliest year for journalists in CPJ history; almost 70% killed by Israel

SUMMARY:#TruthNeverDies Day to #EndImpunity for Crimes against Journalists / Dag tegen Straffeloosheid voor Misdaden tegen Journalisten 2024
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, IFEX launched the International Day to End Impunity campaign and in 2013\, the United Nations designated 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ in General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163\, the date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. \nThe Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. This landmark resolution condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers. It also urges Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers\, to ensure accountability\, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers\, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies. It further calls upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference. \nBetween 2006 and 2020\, over 1\,200 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public. In nine out of ten cases the killers go unpunished. Impunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. These figures do not include the many more journalists\, who on a daily basis suffer from non-fatal attacks\, including torture\, enforced disappearances\, arbitrary detention\, intimidation and harassment in both conflict and non-conflict situations. Furthermore\, there are specific risks faced by women journalists\, including sexual attacks. \nWorryingly\, only one in ten cases committed against media workers over the past decade has led to a conviction. This impunity emboldens the perpetrators of the crimes and at the same time has a chilling effect on society including journalists themselves. Impunity breeds impunity and feeds into a vicious cycle. When attacks on journalists remain unpunished\, a very negative message is sent that reporting the “embarrassing truth” or “unwanted opinions” will get ordinary people in trouble. Furthermore\, society loses confidence in its own judiciary system which is meant to protect everyone from attacks on their rights. Perpetrators of crimes against journalists are thus emboldened when they realize they can attack their targets without ever facing justice. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Read and share the stories of killed journalists #TruthNeverDies. In 2024\, the global commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists will take place on 6-7 November 2024 at at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia under the theme of Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies. \nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

SUMMARY:Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists 2024
DESCRIPTION:Between 2006 and 2024\, over 1\,700 journalists have been killed around the world\, with close to 9 out of 10 cases of these killings remaining judicially unresolved\, according to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists. \nImpunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Governments\, civil society\, the media\, and everyone concerned to uphold the rule of law are being asked to join in the global efforts to end impunity. It is in recognition of the far-reaching consequences of impunity\, especially of crimes against journalists\, that the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session in 2013 which proclaimed 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ (IDEI). The Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. The date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. Every two years\, the awareness raising campaign for the commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists coincides with the findings of the UNESCO Director-General’s Report outlining the current state of global and regional impunity. \nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists \n2024 Global Commemoration and Day of Action: Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies

SUMMARY:#AccessToInfoDay Day for Universal Access to Information / #RightToKnow Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Day for Universal Access to Information:\nThe Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016. The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society advocates beginning in 2012. The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union member states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. In 2016\, MISA Zimbabwe used Access to Information Day to criticise Zimbabwe’s poor information transparency provisions\, noting that\, “While Zimbabwe was one of the first African countries to adopt an access to information law in the form of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA)\, the law in question is a far cry from its purported import and impact.” \nRight To Know Day:\nThe decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nRepresentatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. \nFOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. Conferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. In some countries\, the Right to Know Day elaborated in Right to Know Weeks. Music has been composed especially for the occasion. \nLinks:\nDay for Universal Access to Information \nRight To Know Day \nThe Celebration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2024

SUMMARY:Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2024: Freedom of the Press Reaching Breaking Point - publication
DESCRIPTION:Media freedom and pluralism is flailing across Europe\, and in some countries\, are on its last legs. \nThe European Media Freedom Act will bring some improvements\, but on its own is not enough to rescue a struggling media landscape. Liberties Media Freedom Report 2024 reveals that media freedom and media pluralism are close to breaking point in many EU countries\, while in others\, a near-total overhaul is required to address chronic\, systemic issues with only a limited number of exceptions. The continued erosion of media freedom is evidenced by widespread harassment of journalists and governments restricting access to information. Meanwhile\, heavy media ownership concentration and threats to the independence and finances of public service media contribute to a shrinking media plurality. A diverse and free media environment is crucial for democracy because we rely on independent news outlets to hold our politicians accountable and keep us informed. The pattern of declining media freedom – which shows the overarching trends documented in last year’s report remain unaddressed – goes hand-in-hand with Europe’s democratic backsliding. Based on findings from over two dozen civil liberties organisations from 19 countries across the EU\, the report covers media freedom and pluralism\, safety and protection of journalists\, and freedom of expression and access to information in 2023\, a year when the media landscape was shaped not only by new legislation (Anti-SLAPP Directive\, Digital Services Act\, European Media Freedom Act)\, but also elections (Poland\, the Netherlands\, Slovakia) and regional conflicts (Russia-Ukraine\, Middle East). Additionally\, this year’s report features a new chapter dedicated to the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) – a landmark piece of legislation that has myriad implications for media freedom and pluralism in the EU. \nLinks:\nLiberties’ Media Freedom Report 2024: Freedom of the Press Reaching Breaking Point

\nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists \nVolkstribunaal voor moorden op journalisten begint met eerste hoorzitting
