SUMMARY:De Week van het Nieuws 2026

DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Persvrijheid (Engels: World Press Freedom Day) is jaarlijks ingesteld op 3 mei.

SUMMARY:#RSFIndex2026 World Press Freedom Index 2026 – publication
DESCRIPTION:2026 RSF Index: press freedom at a 25-year low\, for the first time in the history of the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index\, over half of the world’s countries now fall into the “difficult” or “very serious” categories for press freedom. \nIn 25 years\, the average score of all 180 countries and territories surveyed in the Index has never been so low. Since 2001\, the expansion of increasingly restrictive legal arsenals — particularly those linked to national security policies — has been steadily eroding the right to information\, even in democratic countries. The Index’s legal indicator has declined the most over the past year\, a clear sign that journalism is increasingly criminalised worldwide. In the Americas\, the situation has evolved significantly\, with the United States dropping seven places and several Latin American countries sliding deeper into a spiral of violence and repression. \nLinks:\nWorld Press Freedom Index 2026 \nDag van de Persvrijheid / World Press Freedom Day 2026

SUMMARY:Liberties’ #MediaFreedomReport2026: EU Media Freedom Worsens Amid Political Inertia to Implement New Rules - publication
DESCRIPTION:Media freedom worsened in 2025 despite new legislation\, as journalists attacks rose\, public broadcasters faced political pressure\, and governments dragged their feet on enforcement. \nMedia freedom and pluralism in the European Union (EU) in 2025 continued to be plagued by longstanding concerns\, finds the Liberties Media Freedom Report 2026. The adoption of new EU rules\, including the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and the Anti-SLAPP Directive\, promised improvement; however\, slow and often superficial implementation rendered their impact negligible. The overarching trends of previous years\, including rising media ownership concentration\, opaque ownership structures\, the politicisation of state advertising and political interference in public service media and regulators\, remained pervasive issues throughout the Union\, with certain areas even declining. This Report is the fifth annual report on media freedom in the EU produced by the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties). It is based on data and input from nearly 40 member and partner organisations from 22 EU Member States. As in previous editions\, this Report covers three primary areas: media freedom and pluralism\, safety and protection of journalists\, freedom of expression and access to information\, as well as an additional section on European legislation related to media freedom and pluralism. \nLinks:\nEU Media Freedom Worsens Amid Political Inertia to Implement New Rules

SUMMARY:Record 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths - publication
DESCRIPTION:At a time when armed conflict has reached historic levels around the world\, journalist killings also reached an all-time high primarily due to the actions of one government: Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025\, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129 — the highest ever number documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) since the organization started keeping records more than three decades ago.\, according to the report ‘Record 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths‘. \nThis marks back-to-back record years for press fatalities due to Israel’s continued and unprecedented targeting of journalists and media workers. More than 60% of the 86 members of the press killed by Israeli fire in 2025 were Palestinians reporting from Gaza\, where human rights groups and U.N. experts agree a genocide is taking place. Over three-quarters of all press deaths in 2025 were in conflict settings. While the number of journalists and media workers killed in Ukraine and Sudan increased slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year\, to four and nine deaths in each country respectively\, the numbers were still very low compared to Israel\, which remains a significant exception. The rising number of journalist deaths globally is fueled by a persistent culture of impunity for attacks on the press: Very few transparent investigations have been conducted into the 47 cases* of targeted killings (classified as “Murder” in CPJ’s longstanding methodology) documented by CPJ in 2025 — the highest number of journalists deliberately killed for their work in the past decade — and no one has been held accountable in any of the cases. These killings of journalists violate international humanitarian law\, which stipulates that journalists are civilians and should never be deliberately targeted. \nThe continued failure of government leaders to protect the press or hold their attackers to account also lays the groundwork for more killings\, including in countries not at war. Journalists were killed in Mexico\, India\, and the Philippines in 2025\, all countries that have persistently failed to secure justice for journalists’ murders. CPJ has called for radical reform of the ways governments investigate journalist killings in order to bring perpetrators to justice\, including establishing an international investigative task force and imposing targeted sanctions. The uptick in journalist killings is symptomatic of a wider decline in press freedom and journalist safety globally: A near-record number of journalists were jailed in 2025 amid smear campaigns and legal abuse that sought to criminalize the act of reporting the facts. Online harassment and physical attacks against journalists continued to rise amid increasingly hostile rhetoric towards reporters and media organizations\, even in supposedly democratic countries. \nLinks:\nRecord 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths \nAt the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army\, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed – RSF and Avaaz launch international media operation

SUMMARY:Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty in the Russian Federation 2025
DESCRIPTION:Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty (Russian: День памяти журналистов\, погибших при исполнении обязанностей) is a remembrance day\, observed on December 15 in Russia in memory of journalists who died while performing their professional duties. \nThe day was established by the Union of Journalists of Russia (RUJ) in 1991\, following the deaths of journalist Viktor Nogin and cameraman Gennadi Kurennoy in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in September that year. In Moscow the day is observed at Nikitsky Boulevard. According to representatives of the Union of Journalists of Russia\, between 10 and 20 journalists are killed each year in Russia under various circumstances. According to the OSCE representative for the freedom of the press (RFoM) Dunja Mijatović\, “journalists in Russia are far too often subject to acts of intimidation\, threats and attacks”. Mijatović reminded people that “all attacks against journalists should be vigorously investigated by the state authorities\, and the perpetrators and the masterminds prosecuted. \nLinks:\nDecember 15 is the Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed on the Line of Duty in the Russian Federation

SUMMARY:RSF 40th anniversary Festival / Press freedom RSF Awards 2025
DESCRIPTION:The thirty-third edition of the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Press Freedom Awards will be a special edition\, held as part of the RSF Festival marking the NGO’s 40th anniversary at the Gaîté Lyrique cultural centre in Paris on 15 November 2025. \nTwenty-nine journalists\, photojournalists and media outlets from around the world will be honoured across five categories: the Courage Prize\, the Impact Prize\, the Independence Prize\, the Mohamed Maïga Prize for African Investigative Journalism and the Lucas Dolega-SAIF Photo Prize. The Press Freedom Awards will take place alongside films\, debates\, workshops\, exhibitions\, and performances as the RSF Festival celebrates four decades of defending press freedom\, access to reliable information and the protection of those who make it possible. The ceremony will be hosted by RSF Editorial Director Anne Bocandé and pay tribute to these “information heroes\,” spotlighting their courageous\, essential work. This year’s shortlist comprises 15 journalists\, nine media outlets and five photojournalists from 18 countries. All have made significant contributions to the defence and promotion of press freedom worldwide. Acclaimed actor and director Aïssa Maïga will present the Mohamed Maïga Prize for African Investigative Journalism. The prize\, added in 2024\, is overseen by RSF and the Mohamed Maïga Association and rewards the exemplary work of an African journalist on topics such as human rights\, the environment\, education and the right to information — issues dear to Aïssa Maïga’s father\, Malian investigative journalist Mohamed Maïga\, who died in unclear circumstances in 1984. \nLinks:\n2025 RSF Prize laureates to be announced at RSF Festival in Paris on 15 November \nRSF Press Freedom Awards: the 2025 laureates

SUMMARY:YouTube Quietly Erased More Than 700 Videos Documenting Israeli Human Rights Violations - publication
DESCRIPTION:The tech giant YouTube deleted the accounts of three prominent Palestinian human rights groups — a capitulation to Trump sanctions. \nYouTube surreptitiously deleted all these videos in early October by wiping the accounts that posted them from its website\, along with their channels’ archives. The accounts belonged to three prominent Palestinian human rights groups: Al-Haq\, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights\, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. The three human rights groups’ account terminations cumulatively amount to the erasure of more than 700 videos\, according to an Intercept tally. The deleted videos range in scope from investigations\, such as an analysis of the Israeli killing of American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh\, to testimonies of Palestinians tortured by Israeli forces and documentaries like “The Beach\,” about children playing on a beach who were killed by an Israeli strike. Some videos are still available through copies saved on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or on alternate platforms\, such as Facebook and Vimeo. The wiping only affected the group’s official channels; videos which were produced by the nonprofits but hosted on alternate YouTube channels remain active. No cumulative index of videos deleted by YouTube is available\, however\, and many appear to not be available elsewhere online. \nLinks:\nYouTube Quietly Erased More Than 700 Videos Documenting Israeli Human Rights Violations \nYouTube verwijdert 700 video’s met documentatie van Israëlische misdaden

SUMMARY:Politieke Persvrijheidmeter 2025 - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Politieke Persvrijheidmeter laat zien: Persvrijheid in Nederland niet vanzelfsprekend. \nLinks:\nPolitieke Persvrijheidmeter 2025

SUMMARY:NOS\, Wees Eerlijk! - Bezetting Mediapark
DESCRIPTION:NOS\, Wees Eerlijk!

SUMMARY:At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army\, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed - RSF and Avaaz launch international media operation
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of media outlets\, brought together by the campaigning platform Avaaz and Reporters Without Borders (RSF)\, are waging a campaign calling for the protection of Palestinian journalists in Gaza\, the emergency evacuation of reporters seeking to leave the Strip\, an end to impunity for Israeli crimes against Gaza’s reporters and that foreign press be granted independent access to the territory. \nAccording to RSF data\, 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip in less than 23 months. On the night of 10 August alone\, the Israeli army killed six journalists in a targeted strike against Al-Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif. Less than a week ago\, on Monday\, 25 August\, the Israeli army killed five journalists in two consecutive strikes. Today\, hundreds of media outlets in over 50 countries are mobilising in solidarity with Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip\, alongside RSF and Avaaz. This international operation consists of an entire or partial blackout of the front pages of print media\, banners on online news sites\, and audio or video messages broadcast by radio and television stations. In line with the call launched by RSF and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in June\, the media outlets involved in this campaign are making three demands: \n\nthe protection of Palestinian journalists and an end to the impunity for crimes perpetrated by the Israeli army against them in the Gaza Strip.\nthe foreign press be granted independent access to the Gaza Strip.\nthat governments across the world host Palestinian journalists seeking evacuation from Gaza.\n\nWith the opening of the 80th United Nations General Assembly\, they demand strong action from the international community and call on the United Nations Security Council to stop the Israeli army’s crimes against Palestinian journalists.\nLinks:\nAt the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army\, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed \nMeerdere media op zwart om dood journalisten in Gaza \nWaarschuwingsstelsel sirene en NL-alert test \nWijWerkenHierNietAanMee \nRecord 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths – publication

SUMMARY:#RSFIndex2025 World Press Freedom Index 2025 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom\, economic pressure is also a major\, more insidious problem. \nThe economic indicator on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index now stands at an unprecedented\, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result\, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. At a time when press freedom is experiencing a worrying decline in many parts of the world\, a major — yet often underestimated — factor is seriously weakening the media: economic pressure. Much of this is due to ownership concentration\, pressure from advertisers and financial backers\, and public aid that is restricted\, absent or allocated in an opaque manner. The data measured by the RSF Index’s economic indicator clearly shows that today’s news media are caught between preserving their editorial independence and ensuring their economic survival. \nLinks:\nRSF World Press Freedom Index 2025 \nDag van de Persvrijheid / World Press Freedom Day 2025

SUMMARY:Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025: Deepening Crisis In Media Freedom Across the EU Puts Democracy At Risk -publication
DESCRIPTION:Media freedom is crumbling across the EU\, according to Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025\, a collaboration of more than 40 human rights organisations from across the EU. \nIn 2024\, many governments influenced the media by allocating state funding to government-friendly outlets and using public service media for their communication tools; journalists faced widespread threats and violence\, with female journalists targeted the most\, and were denied requests for information by public officials; and weak media ownership transparency resulted in concentrated media ownership\, Liberties Media Freedom Report 2025 (Report) finds. This Report is the fourth annual report on media freedom in the European Union (EU) produced by the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties). It is based on data and input from 43 member and partner organisations from 21 EU Member States. As in previous editions\, this Report covers four primary areas: media freedom and pluralism\, safety and protection of journalists\, freedom of expression and access to information\, and European legislation related to media freedom and pluralism. \nLinks:\nLiberties’ Media Freedom Report 2025: Deepening Crisis In Media Freedom Across the EU Puts Democracy At Risk

SUMMARY:2024 is deadliest year for journalists in CPJ history; almost 70% killed by Israel - publication
DESCRIPTION:More journalists were killed in 2024 than in any other year since the Committee to Protect Journalists began collecting data more than three decades ago\, at least 124 journalists and media workers were killed last year\, nearly two-thirds of them Palestinians killed by Israel. \nThe number of conflicts globally – whether political\, criminal\, or military in nature – has doubled in the past five years\, and this is reflected in the high number of deaths of journalists in nations such as Sudan\, Pakistan\, and Myanmar. But the toll of conflict on the press is most glaring in the unprecedented number of journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza war\, 85 in 2024\, and 78 in 2023. All of the 2024 killings point to the increased dangers facing reporters and media workers – and the threat that poses to the flow of information worldwide. The global total of 124 deaths exceeds the record high of 113 killed in 2007\, when the Iraq war accounted for almost half of journalist casualties. Outside of Gaza (82) and Lebanon (3)\, CPJ documented the killing of 39 other journalists and media workers in 16 nations\, with the deadliest being Sudan (6)\, Pakistan (6)\, Mexico (5)\, Syria (4)\, Myanmar (3)\, Iraq (3)\, and Haiti (2) during 2024. CPJ records a journalist’s killing in its database if it has reasonable grounds to believe they may have been killed in relation to their work: either killed accidentally in a conflict zone or on a dangerous assignment\, or killed deliberately because of their journalism. \nLinks:\n2024 is deadliest year for journalists in CPJ history; almost 70% killed by Israel

SUMMARY:#TruthNeverDies Day to #EndImpunity for Crimes against Journalists / Dag tegen Straffeloosheid voor Misdaden tegen Journalisten 2024
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, IFEX launched the International Day to End Impunity campaign and in 2013\, the United Nations designated 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ in General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163\, the date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. \nThe Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. This landmark resolution condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers. It also urges Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers\, to ensure accountability\, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers\, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies. It further calls upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference. \nBetween 2006 and 2020\, over 1\,200 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public. In nine out of ten cases the killers go unpunished. Impunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. These figures do not include the many more journalists\, who on a daily basis suffer from non-fatal attacks\, including torture\, enforced disappearances\, arbitrary detention\, intimidation and harassment in both conflict and non-conflict situations. Furthermore\, there are specific risks faced by women journalists\, including sexual attacks. \nWorryingly\, only one in ten cases committed against media workers over the past decade has led to a conviction. This impunity emboldens the perpetrators of the crimes and at the same time has a chilling effect on society including journalists themselves. Impunity breeds impunity and feeds into a vicious cycle. When attacks on journalists remain unpunished\, a very negative message is sent that reporting the “embarrassing truth” or “unwanted opinions” will get ordinary people in trouble. Furthermore\, society loses confidence in its own judiciary system which is meant to protect everyone from attacks on their rights. Perpetrators of crimes against journalists are thus emboldened when they realize they can attack their targets without ever facing justice. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Read and share the stories of killed journalists #TruthNeverDies. In 2024\, the global commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists will take place on 6-7 November 2024 at at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia under the theme of Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies. \nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

SUMMARY:Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists 2024
DESCRIPTION:Between 2006 and 2024\, over 1\,700 journalists have been killed around the world\, with close to 9 out of 10 cases of these killings remaining judicially unresolved\, according to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists. \nImpunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Governments\, civil society\, the media\, and everyone concerned to uphold the rule of law are being asked to join in the global efforts to end impunity. It is in recognition of the far-reaching consequences of impunity\, especially of crimes against journalists\, that the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session in 2013 which proclaimed 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ (IDEI). The Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. The date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. Every two years\, the awareness raising campaign for the commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists coincides with the findings of the UNESCO Director-General’s Report outlining the current state of global and regional impunity. \nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists \n2024 Global Commemoration and Day of Action: Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies

SUMMARY:Klassenjustitie in Nederland
DESCRIPTION:Investico onderzoekt ongelijkheid in de rechtsstaat.
